A Study Of African American Student Retention And Persistence At Los Angeles City College In Extended Opportunity Program And Services (Eops), Kalynda Webber Mclean Jan 2010

A Study Of African American Student Retention And Persistence At Los Angeles City College In Extended Opportunity Program And Services (Eops), Kalynda Webber Mclean

Theses and Dissertations

As the community college student population becomes more diverse, the traditional student support program activities are limited in their effectiveness (Crawford, 1999). Rodriguez (1992) reports that although community colleges are often the first entry point into higher education for African American students, there does not seem to be equal success in the retention and persistence of this group. As officials in higher education seek to assess the success or failure of the community college in serving its diverse population, many questions may arise concerning the success of special programs in retaining minority students. Some researchers have wondered whether these special …

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to provide a systematic and comprehensive review of the psychoanalytic literature as it pertains to prenatal psychic experience. The emotional life of the fetus has become an increasingly important topic in psychoanalysis, particularly within object relations theory and theoretical and clinical exploration of primitive mental states. Contemporary psychoanalysts, following the ideas of Freud, Bion, Ploye, Mancia, Grotstein, and Paul have begun to gather research from the fields of infant mental health, developmental psychology, and medicine, among others, to show that not only does the newborn infant have an inherent capacity to communicate with the …

Gender Role Expectations In The Financial Services Industry, Carla Rocha Jan 2010

Gender Role Expectations In The Financial Services Industry, Carla Rocha

Theses and Dissertations

In light of the recent economic crisis, much of the government/media focus on the financial services industry has focused on regulatory issues (Obama, 2009). However, many individuals who are currently employed in the industry are concerned not only with the regulatory environment, but also with the slow progression towards greater gender equality (Bennhold, 2009; The National Council for Research on Women, 2009). The purpose of this study was to compare and contrast gender role expectations of men and women directors in the financial services industry. The researcher investigated the perceived effects of social role theory as it relates to socialization …

The Role Of Methyl Cpg Binding Domain Protein 2 (Mbd2) In The Regulation Of Embryonic And Fetal Β-Type Globin Genes, Merlin Nithya Gnanapragasam Jan 2010

The Role Of Methyl Cpg Binding Domain Protein 2 (Mbd2) In The Regulation Of Embryonic And Fetal Β-Type Globin Genes, Merlin Nithya Gnanapragasam

Theses and Dissertations

The reexpression of the fetal γ-globin gene in adult erythrocytes is of therapeutic interest due to its ameliorating effects in β-hemoglobinopathies. We recently showed that Methyl CpG Binding Domain Protein2 (MBD2) contributes to the silencing of the chicken embryonic ρ-globin and human fetal γ-globin genes. We further biochemically characterized an erythroid MeCP1 complex that is recruited by MBD2 to mediate the silencing of these genes. These observations suggest that the disruption of the MeCP1 complex could augment the expression of the fetal/embryonic globin genes. In the studies presented in chapter 2, we have pursued a structural and biophysical analysis of …

Xenophobia: The Consequences Of Being A Zimbabwean In South Africa, Philip Edward Culbertson Jan 2010

Xenophobia: The Consequences Of Being A Zimbabwean In South Africa, Philip Edward Culbertson

Theses and Dissertations

This paper seeks to explain and describe the xenophobia and xenophobic attacks of Zimbabwean refugees and migrants in South Africa. The political and social instability in Zimbabwe has led to mass exodus of Zimbabweans in search of stability and a means to survive. Many of these Zimbabweans have sought opportunity and refuge in South Africa only to be met with hurdles that metastasized into xenophobia. Research was done on the target population of Zimbabweans in Central Methodist Church in Johannesburg, along with interviews conducted through Medicines Sans Frontiers, and active players in the civil society in Cape Town.

The Role Of The Methyl Dna Binding Domain Protein 2 (Mbd2) In Breast Cancer, Omar Mian Jan 2010

The Role Of The Methyl Dna Binding Domain Protein 2 (Mbd2) In Breast Cancer, Omar Mian

Theses and Dissertations

Methyl-CpG Binding Proteins (MCBPs) are thought to function as the interpreters of epigenetic information encoded in cytosine methylation. Their ability to translate DNA methylation into local transcriptional repression has sparked interest in the role of Methyl-Binding Domain Proteins (MBDs) in cancer, where repatterning of CpG methylation is common. In this dissertation I summarize and discuss observations made in the Ginder Lab linking MCBPs to the progression of neoplastic disease. It is clear from our work that the Methyl Binding Domain Protein 2 (MBD2) is necessary for the persistent repression of critical tumor suppressor genes in breast cancer. We show that …

Interplay Between Keratin And Vimentin Expression In Oral Cancer, Mary Catherine Mcginn Jan 2010

Interplay Between Keratin And Vimentin Expression In Oral Cancer, Mary Catherine Mcginn

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research in our laboratory found that inhibiting expression of vimentin, a marker of epithelial-to mesenchymal transition, inhibited cell growth and motility in vitro and in vivo. Tumors derived from vimentin knockdown cells showed features of epithelial redifferentiation and increased expression of differentiation-specific keratins. It is unknown what causes re-expression of keratins when vimentin is inhibited. Although, canonical Wnt signaling may activate NF-κB and repress of keratin and/or induce vimentin expression through β-catenin. We hypothesize that downregulation of differentiation-specific keratins contributes to tumor progression, mediated directly or indirectly by expression of vimentin. Vimentin-negative HN4 cells were transfected with plasmids encoding …

Periodontal Bacterial-Dna Initiated Immuno-Inflammatory Responses In Human Osteoblastic Cells, Chebel Najib Bou Jan 2010

Periodontal Bacterial-Dna Initiated Immuno-Inflammatory Responses In Human Osteoblastic Cells, Chebel Najib Bou

Theses and Dissertations

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease initiated by gram negative anaerobic bacteria. These bacteria possess pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) that interact with various receptors including Toll like receptors (TLRs). Bacterial DNA (bDNA) is one of the PAMPs mainly recognized by TLR9. Interaction of bDNA and its receptors leads to activation of inflammatory signaling pathways potentially resulting in periodontal bone destruction. The aim of this study was to determine the production of IL- 6 and IL-8 in response to periodontal bDNA from human osteoblastic cells (MG-63). MG- 63 cells were stimulated in duplicate for 20 hours with 100ng/μl of bDNA from …

Ipla2Β, Alternative Splicing And Apoptosis Of Pancreatic Islets, Bhargavi Emani Jan 2010

Ipla2Β, Alternative Splicing And Apoptosis Of Pancreatic Islets, Bhargavi Emani

Theses and Dissertations

Ceramides are bioactive lipids that can promote splicing of apoptosis-related genes, including caspase 9 and BCL-x. A recent study demonstrated that expression of neutral sphingomyelinase (NSMase), an enzyme that hydrolyzes sphingomyelins to generate ceramide, is regulated by Group VIA phospholipase A2 (iPLA2β)-dependent mechanism during β-cell apoptosis. This prompted us to hypothesize that iPLA2 is upstream of ceramide generation in the process regulating splicing of apoptotic genes. To test this, Jurkat T cells were treated with the selective inhibitor of iPLA2β, bromoenol lactone (BEL), RNA was isolated and converted to cDNA, and caspase 9 and BCL-x mRNA viii species were amplified …

Alternative Regulation Of The Alginate Algd Operon By An Activated Algb In Nonmucoid Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Is Dependent On Sigma 54, Jean Kim Jan 2010

Alternative Regulation Of The Alginate Algd Operon By An Activated Algb In Nonmucoid Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Is Dependent On Sigma 54, Jean Kim

Theses and Dissertations

Alginate overproduction by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which causes a mucoid phenotype, is a major virulence factor associated with chronic pulmonary infections in cystic fibrosis patients. Expression of the algD operon for alginate biosynthesis requires three major regulators in association with the ECF sigma factor, σ22, in mucoid strains that are typically defective in anti-sigma factor, MucA. One such algD regulator is AlgB, a member of the NtrC family of two-component systems, which typically utilize σ54. However, neither σ54 nor the cognate sensor kinase (KinB) of AlgB are required for algD expression in such mucoid strains. I hypothesized that KinB-phosphorylated AlgB must …

Influence Of Retinal States On The Development And Maintenance Of Retinofugal Projections, Duncan Morhardt Jan 2010

Influence Of Retinal States On The Development And Maintenance Of Retinofugal Projections, Duncan Morhardt

Theses and Dissertations

Vision provides a critical interface with the physical world. This work examines visual development and vision loss in mice to glean the influence of the retinal state on visual connections. I first assessed the impact of retinal activity on the eye-specific segregation of retinal afferents in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of young Gβ5 -/- mice. Gβ5 is the fifth member of the β subfamily of heterotrimeric G proteins. Gβ5 binds and stabilizes the R7 family of regulators of G-protein signaling (RGS), which accelerate Gi/o GTP hydrolysis. Gβ5 -/- mice, which lack R7RGS activity, have malformed synapses in the outer …

Novel Cinnamic Acid-Based Dehydropolymers For Emphysema: In Vitro And In Vivo Assessment Of Their Activities, Bhawana Saluja Jan 2010

Novel Cinnamic Acid-Based Dehydropolymers For Emphysema: In Vitro And In Vivo Assessment Of Their Activities, Bhawana Saluja

Theses and Dissertations

Pulmonary emphysema is a serious worldwide illness, causing progressive and irreversible alveolar wall loss and difficulty in breathing. It is caused mostly by cigarette smoking. However, its unresolved complex and multiple pathogenic mechanisms have left this disease without effective pharmacotherapy. This project hypothesized that cinnamic acid-based dehydropolymers (DHPs), originally discovered as novel anti-coagulants, protect against emphysema through their potent triple inhibitory actions against oxidative stress, inflammation and elastase, some of the pathogenic mechanisms associated with this disease. Three in vitro inhibitory activity assays for oxidative stress, lung inflammation and neutrophil elastase (NE) were developed and used to identify the most …

Cell-Cell Junction Signaling Regulating Dna Double-Strand Break Repair In Breast Cells, Sinduja Ethiraj Jan 2010

Cell-Cell Junction Signaling Regulating Dna Double-Strand Break Repair In Breast Cells, Sinduja Ethiraj

Theses and Dissertations

Genomic instability and acquisition of invasiveness through the basement membrane extracellular matrix (ECM) are two major processes for epithelial cell malignancy in breast cancer. DNA double-strand break repair (DSBR) is one of the processes that get misregulated during breast cancer progression. In addition, radiation induced breaks such as those induced during radiation therapy to treat breast cancer patients are repaired by DSBR, rendering this pathway relevant for therapy as well. DSBR can occur either by homologous recombination (HR) or non-homologous end-joining (NHEJ). HR is accepted as the more error-free pathway. HR is regulated by the cell cycle status such that …

Modeling Hydrophobic Effects At Different Lengthscales, Jihang Wang Jan 2010

Modeling Hydrophobic Effects At Different Lengthscales, Jihang Wang

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding hydrophobic effects at different length scales is relevant to many complex and poorly understood everyday phenomena in materials science and biology. In this thesis, a variety of theory/computational methods in statistical physics and statistical mechanics are used to address three separated, but interconnected problems: (1) How solvation free energy scales with a partical size that is charged? This problem has never been attempted to solve before despite its immense importance in colloidal and protein solutions (J. Wang, D. Bratko, K. Leung and A. Luzar, Hydrophobic hydration at different length-scales: manipulating the crossover by charges, to be submitted to J. …

Patient Ventilator Dyssynchrony: Types, Frequency And Patterns In Critically Ill Adults, Karen Mellott

Theses and Dissertations

Patient ventilator dyssynchrony (PVD) occurs frequently, but little is known about the types, frequency and patterns of PVD for longer than 30 minutes. Deeper levels of sedation are associated with PVD. Evaluation of ventilator graphics and the ability to identify PVD should assist clinicians to optimize patient ventilator interactions and promote earlier interventions. The purpose of this study was to identify the different types, frequency and patterns of PVD in critically ill adults and determine the effect of sedation level on PVD. Thirty medical and surgical ICU adult patients were enrolled; 27 were used for analysis. Pressure/time and flow/ time …

Contributions Of Neglect Subtypes And Family History In Dsm-Iv Disorders: Findings From The Ncs-R, Leanne Heaton Jan 2010

Contributions Of Neglect Subtypes And Family History In Dsm-Iv Disorders: Findings From The Ncs-R, Leanne Heaton

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the prevalence of neglect in the child welfare system, understanding of the etiology of neglect remains limited in scope. Limitations are driven by the frequent reliance on child protective services (CPS) data which consists of identified cases and consequently, the most serious of all cases, or through a few population based studies that operationalize neglect as a homogenous phenomenon rather than as distinct subtypes. Furthermore, most studies of neglect focus on maternal deficiencies while paternal factors are largely ignored. This study is meant to address these considerations by utilizing the National Comorbidity Survey Replication (NCS-R), a broad population based …
