Interracial, Yet Intrafaith: Does A Common Religion Predict Higher Relationship Quality In Interracial Romantic Relationships?, Danielle Fenn Jun 2012

Interracial, Yet Intrafaith: Does A Common Religion Predict Higher Relationship Quality In Interracial Romantic Relationships?, Danielle Fenn

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to analyze the association between relationship quality and religious discrepancy of interracial couples who are either married or cohabiting. Two variables of religious discrepancy (religious affiliation discrepancy and religiosity discrepancy) were studied. The sample included three groups of interracial couples: Hispanic-white, Asian-white, and Black-white. The data were analyzed using a structural equation model and regression estimates of the three groups were compared. Results showed a significant relationship in only three of the 12 relationships between the two variables of religious discrepancy and relationship quality. Significant negative relationships were found between religious denomination discrepancy and …

Elucidating Genetic And Environmental Influences On Alcohol-Related Phenotypes, Jacquelyn Meyers Jun 2012

Elucidating Genetic And Environmental Influences On Alcohol-Related Phenotypes, Jacquelyn Meyers

Theses and Dissertations

Decades of work has led researchers to believe that risk for complex behavioral phenotypes, such as alcohol use disorders, is likely influenced by multiple genes of small effect acting in conjunction with each other and the environment. Currently, the field of psychiatric genetics is developing methodologies for the identification of genetic risk variants that predispose individuals to the development of complex behavioral disorders. Several challenges related to the complex and polygenic nature of these phenotypes, must be considered. This dissertation study attempts to address these important challenges in the context of alcohol use disorders and related phenotypes. A rich twin …

A Study In Computerized Translation Testing (Ctt) For The Arabic Language, Amanda J. Kuhn Jun 2012

A Study In Computerized Translation Testing (Ctt) For The Arabic Language, Amanda J. Kuhn

Theses and Dissertations

Translation quality assessment remains pertinent in both translation theory and in the industry. Specifically, the process of assessing a target document's quality or a person's translation competence involves a lot of time and money on the part of various governments, organizations and individuals. In response to this issue, this project builds on the ongoing research of Hague et al. (2012), who seek to determine the capabilities of a computerized translation test for the French-to-English and Spanish-to-English language pairs. Specifically, Hague et al. (2012) question whether a good score on a detect-and-correct style computerized translation test that is calculated by a …

Open (Adoption) For Business: Opposing Movements And Environmental Opportunity Structures In The Adoption Organizational Field, 1972-2000, Krista Marie Frederico Jun 2012

Open (Adoption) For Business: Opposing Movements And Environmental Opportunity Structures In The Adoption Organizational Field, 1972-2000, Krista Marie Frederico

Theses and Dissertations

Recent directions in organizational studies have demonstrated progressive social movements' ability to generate rewarding enterprises or environmental opportunity structures (EOS) in receptive markets. However, more nuanced opposing movements (Meyer and Staggenborg 1996), such as the pro-choice and pro-life movements, receive far less attention, leaving scholars to postulate that there is much yet to know about the impact of movements other than those with strict progressive orientations (Zald, Morrill, and Rao 2005). To better understand how opposing movements contribute to environmental opportunity structures, this thesis examines dramatic growth in the number of adoption agencies advertising services in the Yellow Pages during …

Unique Features And Neuronal Properties In A Multisensory Cortex, W. Alex Foxworthy Jun 2012

Unique Features And Neuronal Properties In A Multisensory Cortex, W. Alex Foxworthy

Theses and Dissertations

UNIQUE FEAUTRES OF ORGANIZATION AND NEURONAL PROPERTIES IN A MULTISENSORY CORTEX Multisensory processing is a ubiquitous sensory effect that underlies a wide variety of behaviors, such as detection and orientation, as well as perceptual phenomena from speech comprehension to binding. Such multisensory perceptual effects are presumed to be based in cortex, especially within areas known to contain multisensory neurons. However, unlike their lower-level/primary sensory cortical counterparts, little is known about the connectional, functional and laminar organization of higher-level multisensory cortex. Therefore, to examine the fundamental features of neuronal processing and organization in the multisensory cortical area of the posterior parietal …

Rembrandt Van Rijn's Jewish Bride: Depicting Female Power In The Dutch Republic Through The Notion Of Nation Building, Nan T. Atwood Jun 2012

Rembrandt Van Rijn's Jewish Bride: Depicting Female Power In The Dutch Republic Through The Notion Of Nation Building, Nan T. Atwood

Theses and Dissertations

Many art historians have debated the identity of the couple in Rembrandt's the Jewish Bride (1667). The painting is most often identified as an Old Testament theme. This is due to the seventeenth-century Dutch practice of using biblical "types" as ideal models for the structuring of the new republic founded on the Israelite ideology of nation building. Three of these biblical female types that have been separately associated with the female figure in the Jewish Bride are, Rebecca, Ruth, and Esther. As these biblical women represented different notions of power through their respective narratives, this thesis argues that Rembrandt deliberately …

Exposure To Dietary Selenium And Soy Isoflavones In Utero Provides Greater Protection Against Prostate Cancer Risk Factors In Tramp Mice Than Exposure Beginning At 6 Weeks, Heather Schofield Lindsay Jun 2012

Exposure To Dietary Selenium And Soy Isoflavones In Utero Provides Greater Protection Against Prostate Cancer Risk Factors In Tramp Mice Than Exposure Beginning At 6 Weeks, Heather Schofield Lindsay

Theses and Dissertations

Prostate cancer is the second most commonly occurring cancer in men in the United States. Generally, an extended period of time is needed for a mutation to develop into a full scale tumor. Because of this long latency period, lifestyle and environmental factors, such as diet, may play an important role in the development and progression of the disease. Diet is one factor that has been implicated in the risk for developing prostate cancer. We previously showed that diets high in soy isoflavones and selenium (Se) decreased androgen receptor expression and expression of androgen regulated genes in healthy rat prostates. …

Between Family And Market: The Decline Of Professional Employment Among Egyptian Female University Graduates, Magda Aboul Ela Jun 2012

Between Family And Market: The Decline Of Professional Employment Among Egyptian Female University Graduates, Magda Aboul Ela

Theses and Dissertations

It is noticeable that the female professional employment is declining among graduate students in Egypt. The patriarchal gendered attitudes permeate family, labor market and state to form a powerful obstacle to women's equal participation in the labor market. The young women struggle to position themselves in the labor market without institutional or structural coverage. On one hand the patriarchal family reinforces the gender norms that dictate the secondary status of women whether at the household or in the labor market and moreover, preaches the male dominance ideology. On the other hand the state's legislation deepens this secondary status of women …

Exploring The Biodiversity Of Anammox In Atlantis Ii And Kebrit Brine Pools' Interfaces, Ibrahim Farag Jun 2012

Exploring The Biodiversity Of Anammox In Atlantis Ii And Kebrit Brine Pools' Interfaces, Ibrahim Farag

Theses and Dissertations

The Red Sea brine pools are unique environments to assess the biochemical adaptation of marine bacteria. The role of nitrogen in marine biogeochemistry is central and greatly influences the diverse elements including carbon and phosphorus. Anammox communities play a significant role in the total nitrogen loss especially in deep sea and deep ocean ecosystems. Despite this, the biodiversity of Anammox bacteria have not been previously investigated in any brine pool ecosystems. With the advances of the metagenomics based approaches, the exploration of the yet uncultured microbial communities including the Anammox bacteria has taken different perspectives. Anammox communities are currently analyzed …

Gendered Infidelity In Comparative Literary Context, Magda Elsehrawi

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores and explains the recurring presence of the adulterous female character in narratives from the medieval period to the modern, with reference to four narratives: The Arabian Nights and The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer from the medieval period, where there is a plentiful reservoir of tales about adulterous wives, as well as in the more recent novels of Lady Chatterley's Lover (1929) by the British novelist D. H. Lawrence, and A Certain Woman (2001) by the Egyptian novelist Hala El Badry, where the innate stream of thoughts of the contemporary adulterous wife and her struggles from a …

Investigating The Translation Of Cobra1: Canonical Expression Is Alternatively Initiated From A Non-Aug Codon, Mohamed Abouelsoud Jun 2012

Investigating The Translation Of Cobra1: Canonical Expression Is Alternatively Initiated From A Non-Aug Codon, Mohamed Abouelsoud

Theses and Dissertations

COBRA1, co-factor of BRCA1, is a transcriptional regulator and a subunit of the Negative elongation complex also known as NELF-B. Although this protein was first designated as a cofactor of BRCA1 and hence acts accordingly, it was found later that it elicits a battery of response genes overlapping those regulated by BRCA1 in absence of BRCA1 itself. Cobra1 deletion is embryonic lethal and results in embryonic stem cells (ESC) differentiation independent of the typical pluripotency machinery. Moreover, it was found that it has a role in suppression of tumors' growth and patients with poor prognosis of breast cancer had decreased …

The chick chorio-allantoic membrane (CAM) contains a complex vascular network commonly used to study angiogenesis. The application of chemical factors and oxygen barrier films onto this tissue can easily influence the process of angiogenesis. In this study, oxygen barrier film patches (Krehalon, polyvinylidene chloride, 12 μm thick, O2 transmission rate = 2.19 cm3•ml/100 in2•day•atm) were applied to areas of the CAM. Holes were made in the film and alginate beads incubated in various chemical factors were placed in the holes. After 24 and 48 hours of exposure to the alginate beads, images were taken of the tissue using a stereomicroscope …

Otx But Not Mitf Transcription Factors Are Required For Zebrafish Rpe Development, Brandon Lane May 2012

Otx But Not Mitf Transcription Factors Are Required For Zebrafish Rpe Development, Brandon Lane

Theses and Dissertations

Mitf and Otx transcription factors have been identified as essential to the development of the retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE), but the relationship between these factors and their specific role in the RPE developmental pathway have not been clearly defined. The role of the two Mitf transcription factors (Mitfa and Mitfb) and two Otx transcription factors (Otx1a and Otx2) in zebrafish RPE development was explored in these experiments. The loss of Mitf activity in mitfa, mitfb, or double mitf null mutant fish lines had no effect on RPE pigmentation or development. The loss of Otx2 activity through morpholino knockdown produced a …

An Agent Based Model Of Tumor Growth And Response To Radiotherapy, Nicole O'Neil May 2012

An Agent Based Model Of Tumor Growth And Response To Radiotherapy, Nicole O'Neil

Theses and Dissertations

An agent based model was developed to examine the growth of a tumor in a healthy cell population. Response to radiation and impact of mutation and bystander effects were studied. In the growth model, the cancer cells proliferated outward becoming invasive. The mass of cancer cells developed a necrotic core. Various treatment protocols of radiation were compared. Timing of treatments was critical to the success of therapy. The event of mutation was rare. When mutation occurred, either unsuccessful treatment or re-growth could result. Multiple rounds of radiation potentially led to increased mutation. Low levels of the bystander effect had little …

The Antinociceptive Effects Of Alpha 7 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Positive Allosteric Modulators In Different Animal Pain Models, Kelen Freitas May 2012

The Antinociceptive Effects Of Alpha 7 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Positive Allosteric Modulators In Different Animal Pain Models, Kelen Freitas

Theses and Dissertations

The α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) subtype is abundantly expressed in the central nervous system (CNS) and in the periphery. Positive allosteric modulators (PAMs) of the α7 increase the response to an agonist and are divided into two types depending on whether they also decrease desensitization of the receptor (type II) or not (type I). Therefore, this study aims to investigate whether the enhancement of endogenous α7 nAChR function will result in a beneficial effect in nociceptive, inflammatory and chronic neuropathic pain models. While NS1738 and PNU-120596 were not active to reduce acute thermal pain, measured by hot-plate and tail-flick …

I Just Can't Do It! The Effects Of Social Withdrawal On Prosocial Behavior, Ashley Michelle Fraser May 2012

I Just Can't Do It! The Effects Of Social Withdrawal On Prosocial Behavior, Ashley Michelle Fraser

Theses and Dissertations

While there has been research published on social withdrawal during childhood, little work has been done on the effects of social withdrawal during emerging adulthood. Since emerging adulthood is a time of transition and initiation to new environments and social contexts, it would be expected to be a time of great anxiety for individuals predisposed to social withdrawal (shyness). Shyer emerging adults are at risk for internalizing behaviors, lowered self-concept, and delayed entry into romantic relationships, therefore, they may also be more challenged when it comes to enacting prosocial behaviors. In addition, the inability to self-regulate emotions may mediate this …

T-Bet-Dependent Regulation Of T Cell Responses During Trypanosoma Cruzi Infection, Dustin Cobb May 2012

T-Bet-Dependent Regulation Of T Cell Responses During Trypanosoma Cruzi Infection, Dustin Cobb

Theses and Dissertations

The human pathogen Trypanosoma cruzi is an intracellular parasite and the etiological agent of Chagas disease. Protective immune responses to T. cruzi are highly dependent on T helper 1 and CD8+ T cells which produce interferon-gamma. A deficiency in these responses has severe consequences on the ability to control infection. Our investigation into the role of the Th1 transcription factor, T-bet, during murine T. cruzi infection revealed that T-bet is required for resistance. Contrary to our expectations, T-bet was not required for the development of Th1 immunity during infection, as T-bet-deficient mice still developed interferon-gamma-producing T cells. However, T-bet was …

Relationship Between Observed Parental Optimism And Adolescent Optimism With Parental Involvement As A Mediating Variable: Two Wave Panel Study, Allison Ellsworth May 2012

Relationship Between Observed Parental Optimism And Adolescent Optimism With Parental Involvement As A Mediating Variable: Two Wave Panel Study, Allison Ellsworth

Theses and Dissertations

Using coded data from parent-child interaction tasks and questionnaires, this longitudinal study examined the relationship between observed mother and father optimism and self-reported and observed optimism of their adolescent child one year later with mother and father involvement as mediators. Results from structural equation modeling indicated that while there was not a direct association between maternal optimism and child optimism, that father involvement mediated that relationship, and that father involvement further mediated the relationship between father involvement and child optimism.

Characterization Of Altered Epithelial Cell Turnover And Differentiation In Embryonic Murine Lungs That Over-Express Receptors For Advanced Glycation End-Products (Rage), Jeffrey Alan Stogsdill May 2012

Characterization Of Altered Epithelial Cell Turnover And Differentiation In Embryonic Murine Lungs That Over-Express Receptors For Advanced Glycation End-Products (Rage), Jeffrey Alan Stogsdill

Theses and Dissertations

Receptors for advanced glycation end-products (RAGE) are multi-ligand cell surface receptors highly expressed in the lung that modulate pulmonary inflammation during disease. However, the contributions of RAGE signaling are unknown during pulmonary organogenesis. In order to test the hypothesis that RAGE misexpression adversely affects lung morphogenesis, conditional transgenic mice were generated that over-express RAGE in alveolar type II cells of the lung. When RAGE is over-expressed throughout embryogenesis, severe lung hypoplasia ensues, culminating in perinatal lethality. Flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry employing cell-specific markers for various distal cell types demonstrated anomalies in key epithelial cell populations resulting from RAGE up-regulation through …

Validation Of 3'-Deoxy-3'-[18f]-Fluorothymidine Positron Emission Tomography For Image-Guidance In Biologically Adaptive Radiotherapy, Marian Axente May 2012

Validation Of 3'-Deoxy-3'-[18f]-Fluorothymidine Positron Emission Tomography For Image-Guidance In Biologically Adaptive Radiotherapy, Marian Axente

Theses and Dissertations

Accelerated tumor cell repopulation during radiation therapy is one of the leading causes for low survival rates of head-and-neck cancer patients. The therapeutic effectiveness of radiotherapy could be improved by selectively targeting proliferating tumor subvolumes with higher doses of radiation. Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging with 3´-deoxy-3´-[18F]-fluorothymidine (FLT) has shown great potential as a non-invasive approach to characterizing the proliferation status of tumors. This thesis focuses on histopathological validation of FLT PET imaging specifically for image-guidance applications in biologically adaptive radiotherapy. The lack of experimental data supporting the use of FLT PET imaging for radiotherapy guidance is addressed by developing …

Reflections Of Self, Melissa Athey May 2012

Reflections Of Self, Melissa Athey

Theses and Dissertations

I vacillate between all extremes, beauty vs. ugly, internal vs. external, micro vs. macro. It is these disparate notions that inspire what I make. We cannot ever see ourselves objectively, but does that mean we shouldn’t try? This thesis is my attempt to dissect what I created in my 2 years at Virginia Commonwealth University, my exploration of the illness within and the psychological nature of how we go about hiding our insecurities.

Testing Crayfish Evolutionary Hypotheses With Phylogenetic Methods, Jesse W. Breinholt May 2012

Testing Crayfish Evolutionary Hypotheses With Phylogenetic Methods, Jesse W. Breinholt

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on increasing the understanding of the evolution processes that have contributed to the diversification of freshwater crayfish. Chapter one estimates the divergence time of the three crayfish families and tests the hypothesis that diversification is tied to the break-up of Pangaea, Gondwanna, and Laurasia. I find that the families of crayfish diverged prior to or in association with the break-up of the three super continents. Chapter two addresses the evolutionary history of the genus Cambarus, using molecular data to test hypotheses of relationships based on chela and carapace morphology. The results provide evidence that the morphology used …
