High-Resolution Mri For 3d Biomechanical Modeling: Signal Optimization Through Rf Coil Design And Mr Relaxometry, James A. Badal Feb 2014

High-Resolution Mri For 3d Biomechanical Modeling: Signal Optimization Through Rf Coil Design And Mr Relaxometry, James A. Badal

Theses and Dissertations

Computed Tomography (CT) is often used for building 3D biomechanical models of human anatomy. This method exposes the subject to a significant x-ray dose and provides limited soft-tissue contrast. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a potential alternative to CT for this application, as MRI offers significantly better soft-tissue contrast and does not expose the subject to ionizing radiation. However, MRI requires long scan times to achieve 3D images at sufficient resolution, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). These long scan times can make subject motion a problem. This thesis describes my work to reduce scan time while achieving sufficient …

A Systematic Study Of The Optical And Electrical Properties Of Ge1-YSnY And Ge1-X-YSiXSnY Semiconductor Alloys, Thomas R. Harris Feb 2014

A Systematic Study Of The Optical And Electrical Properties Of Ge1-YSnY And Ge1-X-YSiXSnY Semiconductor Alloys, Thomas R. Harris

Theses and Dissertations

In order to fully utilize newly developed Ge1-ySny and Ge1-x-ySixSny materials for new novel optoelectronic devices, the optical and electrical properties of these alloys were investigated using photoluminescence (PL) and Hall-effect measurements. Direct bandgap PL emission was observed from almost all the samples, making them very promising candidates for Si-based light emitting devices. T-dependent PL studies also indicate that the indirect-to-direct bandgap transition of Ge1-ySny alloys might take place at a much lower Sn content than the theory predicts. T-dependent Hall-effect measurements showed both degenerate parallel conducting layers as …

Hydroxocobalamin Treatment For Carbon Monoxide Exposures: Characterizing Hemoglobin Changes And Testing For Neurological Sequelae, Leonardo Somera

Theses and Dissertations

Prior work in our lab has indicated that reduced Hydroxocobalamin (B12r) can be added to human blood and is able to convert carbon monoxide (CO) into carbon dioxide. This has great potential as a direct antidote to mitigate the toxic effects of CO poisoning which is a public health risk. In the first part of our work, we use highly specific wavelengths of light and Raman spectroscopy to study changes in Carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) between blood treated with oxygen and blood treated with oxygen and B12r in a flowing circuit of blood. Using Raman spectroscopy, we found that the addition of …

On Chip Preconcentration And Labeling Of Protein Biomarkers Using Monolithic Columns, Device Fabrication, Optimization, And Automation, Rui Yang

Theses and Dissertations

Detection of disease specific biomarkers is of great importance in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Modern bioanalytical techniques, such as liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (LC-MS), have the ability to identify biomarkers, but their cost and scalability are two main drawbacks. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is another potential tool, but it works best for proteins, rather than peptide biomarkers. Recently, microfluidics has emerged as a promising technique due to its small fluid volume consumption, rapidness, low fabrication cost, portability and versatility. Therefore, it shows prominent potential in the analysis of disease specific biomarkers. In this thesis, microfluidic systems that integrate …

Architecture Analyses Of Le Corbusier’S Villa Savoye, Labinot Mehmeti Feb 2014

Architecture Analyses Of Le Corbusier’S Villa Savoye, Labinot Mehmeti

Theses and Dissertations

Le Corbusier remains a very challenging and elusive subject in architectural scholarship today due to the complexity and depth of his work. Critical analyses on his work generally stress one particular design theme or interpretive concept, such as the classical tradition, universalization, machine aesthetics, synthesis of the arts, or mysticism and ambiguity; they never fully explain the depth of his art. He is one of the most significant contributions to modern architecture in the 20th century, Villa Savoye by Le Corbusier. Completed in 1929, Villa Savoye is a modern take on a French country house that celebrates and …

Cloning, Expression And Preliminary Characterization Of A Novel Nitrilase From The Red Sea, Atlantis Ii Deep Brine Pool Using A Metagenomic Approach, Sarah Ali Sonbol

Theses and Dissertations

With the abundance of hazardous nitrile compounds in nature and with the extensive use of them in industries of fine chemicals, the attention towards nitrilases has profoundly increased as biocatalysts in different industries and in bioremediation. The use of nitrilases, which hydrolyze nitriles into carboxylic acids and ammonia, was introduced as a biological method superior to conventional chemical means. In contrast to conventional microbiological techniques using cultured microorganisms, and with the loads of genomic sequences available in the databases, identification of novel nitrilases using metagenomic approaches seems more promising. In this study, a nitrilase was isolated from the microbial metagenomic …

Investigation Of Reinforced Foam Waste With Natural Or Synthetic Fibers, Riham Abdel Mohsen

Theses and Dissertations

The production of plastics has reached about 300 million tons globally each year. The use of energy resources, the health problem and the impacts on the environment from its disposal phase trigger overriding concerns on plastic recycling which can both save energy consumption in production phase and achieve green end-of-life approach for plastics. Polystyrene is hardly biodegradable. It takes at least 500 years to decompose. It is estimated that by volume, it takes as much as thirty percent of landfills worldwide. It is also flammable subject to risk of accidental ignition and cause of huge fires. Polystyrene is not recycled …

Modulators Of Mrp1 Promoter In Neuroblastoma Cell Lines, Myret Said Ghabriel Feb 2014

Modulators Of Mrp1 Promoter In Neuroblastoma Cell Lines, Myret Said Ghabriel

Theses and Dissertations

The long term goal of this research proposal is to further understand the transcriptional regulation of the MRP1 promoter in neuroblastoma cells. We are primarily focused on two possible mechanisms that might lead to the regulation of MRP1 expression: epigenetic modifications, in particular, gene promoter methylation and transcription factors namely the regulation by the methyl binding protein (MeCP2). Within the 5’ untranslated region of the MRP1 promoter is a CpG island that has the potential to be methylated, thus contributing to down regulation of MRP1 expression in drug sensitive neuroblastoma cells. Our goal is to determine if methylation status of …

Beyond Aristotelianism: Al-Farabi On Revelation, Humans And Animals In His On The Perfect State, Michael William Stark Feb 2014

Beyond Aristotelianism: Al-Farabi On Revelation, Humans And Animals In His On The Perfect State, Michael William Stark

Theses and Dissertations

In modern times, Aristotelian influence on Islamicate philosophical writing is exaggerated. Al-Fārābī did more than just copy Aristotle, he was an original thinker, and he may have sourced aspects of his thought and writing style from the Qurʾān. Consideration of al-Fārābī’s biography, works and historical context demonstrates his disinclination to base his writings on those of Aristotle. Al-Fārābī’s thoughts in the key area of revelation in al-Madīna al-fāḍila demonstrate his departure from ancient Greek belief in this area, although his use of individual reasoning also shows clearly his occasional disagreement with Islamic doctrine. Differences and commonalities between animals and humans …

Theses and Dissertations

Problems facing Black American students in underfunded urban schools continue to threaten the viability of public education for this and other nontraditional student populations. These problems, along with the growing diversity of American children, prompt a reexamination of extant data on the practices associated with the effective teaching of Black American students. This meta-ethnography illuminates the findings of four case studies and then explores their implications for teaching. By looking through the lens of critical race theory, this study explores how effective teachers use culture-based instruction to better engage Black American students in the process of learning. Findings identify core …

Regulation Of Growth And Stress Tolerance In Tomato Plants By Expression Of A Dominant-Negative Version Of Erecta Gene From Arabidopsis Thaliana, Hector Ernesto Villagarcia Jan 2014

Regulation Of Growth And Stress Tolerance In Tomato Plants By Expression Of A Dominant-Negative Version Of Erecta Gene From Arabidopsis Thaliana, Hector Ernesto Villagarcia

Theses and Dissertations

Receptor kinases are the main group of signal recognition structures in plants. The large number and diversity of these receptors suggest that they perform major roles in a complex regulatory network of growth, development, and physiological responses. The ERECTA gene is a leucine-rich, receptor-like kinase that affects plant growth rates, stomatal patterning, transpiration efficiency, bacterial pathogen resistance, inflorescence and floral organ morphology, and leaf polarity. The ability to manipulate the ERECTA pathway in members of the Solanaceae family can reveal fundamental mechanisms including regulation of fruit and tuber development. This knowledge may enable changes in plant architecture and growth rates …

Studies On Theraputic Potential Of Dichloroacetic Acid And Hene Laser In Cancer Treatment: Understanding The Mechanism Of Action, Zeiyad Nassaif Al-Karakooly Jan 2014

Studies On Theraputic Potential Of Dichloroacetic Acid And Hene Laser In Cancer Treatment: Understanding The Mechanism Of Action, Zeiyad Nassaif Al-Karakooly

Theses and Dissertations

Cancer cells are often characterized by anaerobic glycolysis due to dysfunctional mitochondria that limits pyruvate uptake for aerobic respiration. Dichloroacetic acid (DCA), used in this study as a potential cancer treatment agent, targets mitochondria in cancer cells and is likely to correct mitochondrial dysfunction by resuming pyruvate uptake and therefore normal aerobic respiration. Our results suggest that DCA causes a significantly higher cytotoxicity in aggressive MCF-7 breast cancer cells than in non-aggressive MC3T3 osteoblastic cells. Apparently lower doses of DCA induce apoptosis whereas higher doses lead to non-specific cytotoxicity or necrosis. Increased cytotoxicity might be related to oxidative stress due …

Combined Antiproliferative Effects Of The Aminoalkylindole Win55,212-2 And Radiation In Breast Cancer Cells, Sean Emery

Theses and Dissertations

The potential antitumor activity of mixed CB1/CB2 cannabinoid receptor agonists, such as the aminoalkylindole WIN55,212-2 (WIN2), has been extensively studied, but little information is available as to their potential interaction with conventional cancer therapies, such as ionizing radiation (IR). In the present work, we investigated the effects of WIN2 on the antiproliferative effects of radiation in human (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231) and murine (4T1) breast cancer cells, as well as an immortalized human breast epithelial cell line (MCF-10A). WIN2 or radiation alone inhibited breast tumor growth, while the combination of WIN2 and radiation was more effective than either agent alone in …

The Effect Of Retinoic Acid On Rai1 And Identification Of Retinoic Acid Receptor Binding Site In Human Rai1, Bingjie Xue Jan 2014

The Effect Of Retinoic Acid On Rai1 And Identification Of Retinoic Acid Receptor Binding Site In Human Rai1, Bingjie Xue

Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies showed haploinsufficiency of RAI1 is the main cause of Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS). SMS is a developmental neurobehavioral syndrome characterized by intellectual disability, congenital anomalies, obesity, neurobehavioral abnormalities, and disrupted circadian sleep-wake pattern. SMS is caused by deletion or mutation of chromosomal region 17p11.2 that includes RAI1. Studies in the Elsea lab have shown that RAI1 is a dosage-sensitive gene. Haploinsufficiency of RAI1 leads to dysregulation of CLOCK, NR1D2, POMC, and BDNF, which are responsible for circadian rhythm, metabolism, and cognitive development. Based on the data from Elsea’s recent study on zebrafish, rai1 gene expression in zebrafish is regulated …

Collisional Dynamic Elements Of The Pyrazine - N2o System:Middle And Low J States, La Moyne Tyler Mix Jan 2014

Collisional Dynamic Elements Of The Pyrazine - N2o System:Middle And Low J States, La Moyne Tyler Mix

Theses and Dissertations

Unimolecular reactions based on the Lindemann - Hinchelwood mechanism are important to understanding combustion and atmospheric processes. The main feature of this mechanism is the energy transfer probability distribution function, P(E',E). We have chosen to study P(E',E) through gas phase collisional dynamics probed with IR transient absorption spectroscopy. Post-collision absorption line widths for the pyrazine-N2O system are used to calculate lab frame translational temperatures. The translational temperatures reveal that collisions with large rotational energy transfer also transfer large amounts of translational energy. For J states >47 the relationship is linear indicating a constant impact parameter. Line widths for J=47 through …

Although 12-step groups are considered evidence-based practices for substance use problems, an understanding of the underlying mechanisms by which they facilitate recovery practices remains in its infancy. The purpose of the current study was to explore whether attachment could be considered a possible mediator of the effects of recovery practices on positive psychosocial outcomes. Participants (N = 112) were self-identified NA members from 26 U.S. states who completed an online survey assessing attachment style, psychosocial sense of community, psychological well-being, and various other recovery …

Voltage Sensing Mechanism In The Voltage-Gated And Proton (H+)-Selective Ion Channel Hv1, Aaron L. Randolph Jan 2014

Voltage Sensing Mechanism In The Voltage-Gated And Proton (H+)-Selective Ion Channel Hv1, Aaron L. Randolph

Theses and Dissertations

Activation of the intrinsic aqueous water-wire proton conductance (GAQ) in Hv1 channels is controlled by changes in membrane potential and the transmembrane pH gradient (ΔpH). The mechanism by which changes in ΔpH affect the apparent voltage dependence of GAQ activation is not understood. In order to measure voltage sensor (VS) activation in Hv1, we mutated a conserved Arg residue in the fourth helical segment (S4) to His and measured H+ currents under whole-cell voltage clamp in transfected HEK-293 cells. Consistent with previous studies in VS domain containing proteins, we find that Hv1 R205H mediates a robust resting-state H+ ‘shuttle’ conductance …
