Cliffdwellers: A Study In Wildness, Stoney Larkin Sasser Jan 2015

Cliffdwellers: A Study In Wildness, Stoney Larkin Sasser

Theses and Dissertations

How do I find wildness? This question is a central tenant of my work and manifests psychologically and physically in my installation, video and performance work. As the diversity of non-human ecosystems wanes and wildness along with it, I am overwhelmed by idea that the human generated debris might eventually cover the earth and become our new landscape, our new wilderness. I wonder "what do we do with all of this stuff'? In my installations, I play with the materials I gather and accumulate. I construct `ecosystems' often using pedestrian materials such as nylons, fabric, lint and glitter to explore …

Aggregation And Satiation: Finding Meaning In Repetition, Samantha Buchanan Jan 2015

Aggregation And Satiation: Finding Meaning In Repetition, Samantha Buchanan

Theses and Dissertations

In my work, I see repetition, but also complexity and variation. This supportive

statement examines my interest in the aggregate, in forms composed of multiples, as well as the repetitive processes required in their construction. I look at the ways in which predictability, recursion, and rhythm function in my repetitive practice, as well as how the energy expended throughout the process manifests in the matter of the work. What I intend for the viewer is the perception of a holistic and simultaneous sensory experience.

The Association Between Perceived Parenting Styles And Aggression In Mexican American Young Adults, Maria R. Medrano Jan 2015

The Association Between Perceived Parenting Styles And Aggression In Mexican American Young Adults, Maria R. Medrano

Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between parenting styles and aggression in children has recently received ample attention throughout the psychological literature, with some aspects of this relationship yielding consistent results while others involve more complex dynamics that require further exploration. One factor that may influence both parenting styles and aggression is culture. While many researchers have investigated the relationship between culture and parenting styles, as well as the relationship between culture and aggression, there appears to be a lack of research investigating the relationship and interactions among these three constructs. It is important to further explore the relationship between perceived parenting styles and …

Using Machine Learning To Class Potential Hazard Of Environmental Chemicals Iin Rodents, Jie Liu Jan 2015

Using Machine Learning To Class Potential Hazard Of Environmental Chemicals Iin Rodents, Jie Liu

Theses and Dissertations

Over 10,000 chemicals are currently in commercial use, and hundreds of more chemicals are introduced each year. And humans are exposed to over 6,000 environmental chemicals. But only a small fraction of these chemicals have been adequately assessed for potential hazard, leading to the need to prioritize the chemicals for targeted toxicity testing. It is time-consuming and resource intensive to determine a single chemical’s potential for toxicity using animal testing. This approach is impractical for evaluating tens of thousands of chemicals. Hence, there is an urgent need to find alternatives to animal testing and a number of international efforts are …

Effects Of Foster Care Placements On The Mental Health Of Abused Children In Florida, Sarah M. Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

INTRODUCTION: As evidenced in the literature, when maltreated children are admitted into state care, they are frequently not afforded sufficient mental health treatment. Concomitantly, foster parents are often not given proper training in providing complex care for these children. As such, the current study aimed to examine the role that foster care has in the development of psychopathology in maltreated children and their caregivers. METHODS: Participants included 234 maltreated youths (ages 7 to 17) presenting for treatment at a community mental health center specializing in childhood trauma. Children and adolescents currently residing in foster care as well as in their …

Cardiovascular Reactivity In Posttraumatic Stress Disorder And Depression, Lydia R. Malcolm Jan 2015

Cardiovascular Reactivity In Posttraumatic Stress Disorder And Depression, Lydia R. Malcolm

Theses and Dissertations

Exaggerated cardiovascular reactivity (CVR) to stress has been implicated in the increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet mixed results have been reported. The CVR research may have been confounded by underrepresentation of women, few studies using sophisticated cardiovascular measurement, and a lack of analyses of PTSD symptom clusters. The purpose of the present study was to examine if young civilian women (M ± SD = 29.89±7.33) with PTSD (n=17) demonstrate greater CVR than women with depression (n=12) or no mental illness controls (n=18), and to explore the relationships between CVR and PTSD …

Factors Predicting Return To Play In Sports-Related Concussion: An Empirical Evaluation, Douglas R. Polster Jan 2015

Factors Predicting Return To Play In Sports-Related Concussion: An Empirical Evaluation, Douglas R. Polster

Theses and Dissertations

Sports-related concussion and its subsequent management have become a top priority within the sports medicine research spectrum. In order to properly understand the complex nature of concussion management, multiple aspects of the injury were explored including the psychobiological nature of the injury, risk for further injury, diagnostic concerns, and return to play decision making. While much research has been dedicated to these areas, one in particular, return to play, is the focus of this current research study. To date, there has not been a method for accurately predicting return to play time after an athlete has sustained sports-related concussion. In …

Let's Talk Tobacco: African American Parent-Adolescent Communication About Tobacco Use Within The Context Of Parental Smoking, Michell Pope Jan 2015

Let's Talk Tobacco: African American Parent-Adolescent Communication About Tobacco Use Within The Context Of Parental Smoking, Michell Pope

Theses and Dissertations

Tobacco use and the associated health risks are a major public health concern. Research suggests that parents’ own tobacco use, caregiver-adolescent antismoking communication, and parenting practices (e.g., prompting, parental monitoring) may work to influence adolescents’ tobacco-related attitudes and behavioral outcomes (e.g., refusal efficacy, intentions to use and actual use). Although historically African American adolescents have exhibited lower rates of tobacco use than their racial/ethnic counterparts, there is growing evidence to suggest that this may be changing because of increased use of tobacco products and/or underreporting of the use of alternative tobacco products or ATPs (e.g., cigars, cigarillos), among this population. …

Proof-Of-Concept Of Environmental Dna Tools For Atlantic Sturgeon Management, Jameson Hinkle Jan 2015

Proof-Of-Concept Of Environmental Dna Tools For Atlantic Sturgeon Management, Jameson Hinkle

Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

The Atlantic Sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus, Mitchell) is an anadromous species that spawns in tidal freshwater rivers from Canada to Florida. Overfishing, river sedimentation and alteration of the river bottom have decreased Atlantic Sturgeon populations, and NOAA lists the species as endangered. Ecologists sometimes find it difficult to locate individuals of a species that is rare, endangered or invasive. The need for methods less invasive that can create more resolution of cryptic species presence is necessary. Environmental DNA (eDNA) is a non-invasive means of detecting rare, endangered, or invasive species by isolating nuclear or mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from the …

The Influence Of Executive Functions And Emotion Regulation On Teacher-Rated Social Behaviors In Middle Childhood, Tennisha N. Riley Jan 2015

The Influence Of Executive Functions And Emotion Regulation On Teacher-Rated Social Behaviors In Middle Childhood, Tennisha N. Riley

Theses and Dissertations

Early social interactions are important to developing and maintaining positive social relationships in childhood. It is well understood that the social development is dependent on a number of developmental changes in both cognition and emotion. While most research has focused on cognitive and emotional models of social behaviors separately, a consideration for research investigating social behaviors is to examine cognitive processing and emotional processing concurrently. The current work focuses on the relationship between the executive processes involved in cognition and emotion regulation, and the influence on adaptive (social skills) and maladaptive (aggressive behavior) social behaviors. Specifically, the reformulated social behavioral …

Examining The Sensitivity Of Surface Chlorophyll To Upwelling Events Of Variable Frequency In The California Current System, John Thomas Bartlett Jan 2015

Examining The Sensitivity Of Surface Chlorophyll To Upwelling Events Of Variable Frequency In The California Current System, John Thomas Bartlett

Theses and Dissertations

Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems (EBUS) spatially encompass approximately 1% of the ocean surface area, but are responsible for nearly 20% of global fisheries production. This significant biological production is primarily attributed to the nutrient-rich waters brought to the euphotic zone through a physical process called upwelling. In an attempt to understand the various physical and biological processes occurring on a wide range of temporal and spatial scales, the California Current System (CCS), one of the major EBUS, has been subject to a multitude of scientific studies over the past several decades. Recent modeling enhancements have enabled researchers to investigate mesoscale …

A Convergent Approach To The Continuous Synthesis Of Telmisartan Via A Suzuki Reaction Between Two Functionalized Benzimidazoles, Alex D. Martin Jan 2015

A Convergent Approach To The Continuous Synthesis Of Telmisartan Via A Suzuki Reaction Between Two Functionalized Benzimidazoles, Alex D. Martin

Theses and Dissertations

A direct and highly efficient synthesis has been developed for telmisartan, the active ingredient in the widely prescribed antihypertensive drug Micardis®. This approach brings together two functionalized benzimidazoles using a high-yielding Suzuki reaction that can be catalyzed by a homogeneous palladium source or palladium on a solid support.

The ability to perform the cross-coupling reaction was facilitated by the regio-controlled preparation of a 2-bromo-1-methylbenzimidazole precursor. The method developed is the first reported selective bromination at the 2-position of a benzimidazole and produces the first major precursor in high yield (93%). The second precursor, potassium (4-methyl-2-propylbenzimidazol-6-yl) trifluoroborate, was prepared from commercially …

Elucidation Of A Novel Pathway In Staphylococcus Aureus: The Essential Site-Specific Processing Of Ribosomal Protein L27, Erin A. Wall Jan 2015

Elucidation Of A Novel Pathway In Staphylococcus Aureus: The Essential Site-Specific Processing Of Ribosomal Protein L27, Erin A. Wall

Theses and Dissertations

Ribosomal protein L27 is a component of the eubacterial large ribosomal subunit that has been shown to play a critical role in substrate stabilization during protein synthesis. This function is mediated by the L27 N-terminus, which protrudes into the peptidyl transferase center where it interacts with both A-site and P-site tRNAs as well as with 23S rRNA. We observed that L27 in S. aureus and other Firmicutes is encoded with a short N-terminal extension that is not present in most Gram-negative organisms, and is absent from mature ribosomes. The extension contains a conserved cleavage motif; nine N-terminal amino acids are …

Speaking For The Picture: Memory, Image, And Identity In The Works Of W.G. Sebald And Chris Marker, Connor Mccormick Jan 2015

Speaking For The Picture: Memory, Image, And Identity In The Works Of W.G. Sebald And Chris Marker, Connor Mccormick

Theses and Dissertations

The nineteenth and twentieth centuries saw the development of technologies for externalizing human memory beyond writing, painting, and sculpting. These modes of visual representation, namely photography and cinema carried with them a purported objective representation of reality, which has been used to create classifications, divide people groups, and construct grand historical narratives used to marginalize those that do not fit within the hegemonic center. Looking to the works of writer W.G. Sebald, and filmmaker Chris Marker, we see a complication of the divide between visual and verbal texts, as each artist deconstructs their own medium’s conventions. Using theories of ekphrasis …

Analytical Method Development For The Detection And Analysis Of Protein Carbonyls, Chelsea M. Coffey Jan 2015

Analytical Method Development For The Detection And Analysis Of Protein Carbonyls, Chelsea M. Coffey

Theses and Dissertations

Oxidative stress can result in changes to many biomolecules and also affect their activities. We are interested in protein carbonylation, a type of unnatural oxidation which has been associated with numerous degenerative disease states and is also a consequence of the natural aging process. Protein carbonyls are stable species, but countless analytical barriers exist in terms of their identification. Thus, the main goal of this work was to develop and optimize analytical methods that could be used to help us better understand which, where, and how proteins are being carbonylated.

Initial studies involved method validation for carbonylating, tagging, and enriching …

Instream fish collections from 1958, 1990, and 2014 were utilized to assess a variety of fish assemblage metrics for each of the five catchments, and analyses were performed to assess …

Investigation Of Gain-Of-Function Induced By Mutant P53, Catherine Vaughan Jan 2015

Investigation Of Gain-Of-Function Induced By Mutant P53, Catherine Vaughan

Theses and Dissertations

p53 is mutated in 50% of all human cancers, and up to 70% of lung cancer. Mutant p53 is usually expressed at elevated levels in cancer cells and has been correlated with a poor prognosis. Cancer cells that express mutant p53 show an increase in oncogenic phenotypes including an increase in growth rate, resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs, and an increase in motility and tumorigenicity to name a few. We have identified several genes involved in cell growth and survival that are upregulated by expression of common p53 mutants: NFκB2, Axl, and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). The aim of this …

The Effect Of Optogenetic Manipulation Of Ss Interneurons Within Malformed, Epileptogenic Cortex, Nicole Ekanem Jan 2015

The Effect Of Optogenetic Manipulation Of Ss Interneurons Within Malformed, Epileptogenic Cortex, Nicole Ekanem

Theses and Dissertations

A large percentage of individuals with intractable epilepsies have an accompanying cortical malformation, the underlying cellular mechanisms of which are poorly understood. It is known however that in an animal model for one such malformation, polymicrogyria, epileptogenesis occurs most easily from an adjacent area termed the paramicrogyral region (PMR). Previous studies implicate SS interneurons as a potential contributor to this pathology, which lead to our hypothesis: in PMR, SS interneurons exert a higher modulatory influence on excitatory pyramidal cells, as compared to the same by SS interneurons within homologous control cortex.

Using a freeze-lesion model for polymicrogyria in transgenic mice …

Axon Initial Segment Stability In Multiple Sclerosis, Suneel K. Thummala Jan 2015

Axon Initial Segment Stability In Multiple Sclerosis, Suneel K. Thummala

Theses and Dissertations

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system characterized by inflammation and demyelination. In addition to these hallmark features, MS also presents with axonal pathology, which is likely responsible for the signs and symptoms of the disease. Although prominent in MS, axonal pathology is frequently considered a consequence of demyelination and not a primary event. This conclusion is consistent with demyelination inducing the loss of specific axonal domains, known as the nodes of Ranvier that are responsible for the propagation of action potentials along the axon. In contrast, we propose that axonal pathology associated with MS …

Theses and Dissertations

The trypanosomatid protists belonging to Order Kinetoplastida are some of the most successful parasites ever known to mankind. Their extreme physiological diversity and adaptability to different environmental conditions and host systems make them some of the most widespread parasites, causing deadly diseases in humans and other vertebrates.

This project focuses on their unique mitochondrion, called the kinetoplast, and more specifically involves the characterization of a part of their mitochondrial DNA (also called kinetoplast DNA or kDNA), the maxicircles, which are functional homologs of eukaryotic mitochondrial DNA in the kinetoplastid protists. We have sequenced and characterized the maxicircle genomes of 20 …

Role Of Extracytoplasmic Rna Polymerase Sigma 70 Factor, Pg0214, In The Survival Of Porphyromonas Gingivalis And In Adaptation To Environmental Stress., David M. Smith Jan 2015

Role Of Extracytoplasmic Rna Polymerase Sigma 70 Factor, Pg0214, In The Survival Of Porphyromonas Gingivalis And In Adaptation To Environmental Stress., David M. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Porphyromonas gingivalis, a gram-negative anaerobic, pathogenic bacterium is a major etiological agent in the initiation and progression of periodontal disease. Due to the ever-changing environment of the oral cavity, inhabitants like Porphyromonas gingivalis must possess the ability to adapt to changes in environmental conditions like pH, temperature, oxygen tension, and metal concentration. P. gingivalis should therefore have an efficient regulatory system in order to adapt and survive in the oral cavity. This response adaptation occurs at the transcriptional level, which involves alternative sigma factors. Extracytoplasmic function sigma (ECF-s) factors are the largest group of alternative sigma factors that play …

The Effects Of Hydropeaking On Lotic Benthic Macroinvertebrate Assemblages, Andrew L. Garey Jan 2015

The Effects Of Hydropeaking On Lotic Benthic Macroinvertebrate Assemblages, Andrew L. Garey

Theses and Dissertations

The term hydropeaking refers to anthropogenically induced, short-duration, high-magnitude discharge pulses that are generated in lotic systems for electricity production. The practice of hydropeaking produces the largest source of renewable energy worldwide, and its use is projected to increase through the year 2040. The primary objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of hydropeaking on benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages, which are important components of lotic ecosystems. Results of this work show that, across a wide range of impacted systems worldwide, the consistently observed patterns of elevated benthic macroinvertebrate drift in response to hydropeaking pulses are primarily related to the …

Working Together: Using Protein Networks Of Bacterial Species To Compare Essentiality, Centrality, And Conservation In Escherichia Coli., Christopher Wimble

Theses and Dissertations

Proteins in Escherichia coli were compared in terms of essentiality, centrality, and conservation. The hypotheses of this study are: for proteins in Escherichia coli, (1) there is a positive, measureable correlation between protein conservation and essentiality, (2) there is a positive relationship between conservation and degree centrality, and (3) essentiality and centrality also have a positive correlation. The third hypothesis was supported by a moderate correlation, the first with a weak correlation, and the second hypotheis was not supported. When proteins that did not map to orthologous groups and proteins that had no interactions were removed, the relationship between essentality …
