Bio-Inspired Design Of Mechanical Band Pass Sensor With The Ability To Scavenge Energy, Md Riaz Uddin Ahmed
Bio-Inspired Design Of Mechanical Band Pass Sensor With The Ability To Scavenge Energy, Md Riaz Uddin Ahmed
Theses and Dissertations
Primary objective of this work is to introduce the multi-scale computational model for the bio-inspired acousto-ultrasonic band pass sensor that are capable of mechanically sense and/or filter wide range user defined frequencies. Selecting a particular and/or a distinct band of frequencies is essential for many applications in science engineering and technologies. For example design of sensors in chemical, biomedical and biological applications; device application for acoustic modulation by breaking the acoustic reciprocity and the sensors used in precision manufacturing applications requires sensing and/or filtering of wide range of acousto-ultrasonic frequencies. Presently, electronic devices are widely employed in commercial applications for …
Community-Level Factors Associated With Health-Related Quality Of Life Among Older Adults, Yu-Hsiu Lin
Community-Level Factors Associated With Health-Related Quality Of Life Among Older Adults, Yu-Hsiu Lin
Theses and Dissertations
Objective: Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and well-being is a new topic area for Healthy People 2020 in the U.S. In a broad-based literature review, more research explored individual level factors of HRQOL, and few focused on older adults. Multilevel analysis was seldom adopted to investigate the relationship between area-level socioeconomic or social environment factors and HRQOL. In lieu of the traditional Chapter 4 (Results) and Chapter 5 (Conclusion), two manuscripts representing the two specific research aims are included. The main aim of first manuscript was to explore the association between area deprivation, area health resources and older adults’ HRQOL. …

A Survey Of The Kinetic Monte Carlo Algorithm As Applied To A Multicellular System, Michael Richard Laughlin
Theses and Dissertations
We explore the origins and implementation of the Kinetic Monte Carlo method on a system of cells suspended in a liquid media. The situation presented herein has applications in the emerging field of biofabrication, which may have lasting impacts in medical science. The theory behind the method is explained in detail, starting with its emergence in the 1960s, and two major improvements to the scaling of the method are presented, along with a restriction to a special case. Finally, we give the results of several simulations.
Global Methylation Of Dna Among Spartina Alterniflora Clones Differing In Age At North Inlet, Sc, Trenton Agrelius
Global Methylation Of Dna Among Spartina Alterniflora Clones Differing In Age At North Inlet, Sc, Trenton Agrelius
Theses and Dissertations
“Brown marsh” or “sudden marsh dieback” refers to the rapid death of patches varying in size of Spartina alterniflora. In 2000 following a 100-year record drought, approximately 8,000 hectares of S. alterniflora died along the Louisiana coast, which prompted Louisiana Governor Foster to declare a state of emergency. Other cases have been documented at North Inlet, SC as well as various other marshes along the southeastern United States. Currently, there is much dispute regarding the cause of “sudden marsh dieback” but environmental stress is one of the acknowledged constants across sites. We hypothesized an alternative mechanism in which methylation of …
Solving Influence Diagrams Using Branch And Bound Search, Arindam Khaled
Solving Influence Diagrams Using Branch And Bound Search, Arindam Khaled
Theses and Dissertations
Influence diagrams (ID) are graphical frameworks for decision making in stochastic situations with mathematical models embedded in them. The goal of an optimal algorithm for an ID is to find a strategy that would maximize the expected utility. We will explain a few algorithms for influence diagrams in this thesis. There exists an obvious temporal ordering among decisions in an ID; and any information used in the past will always be available in the future: these two properties are respectively called the “regularity” and “noforgetting” assumptions. A limited memory influence diagram (LIMID) does not follow these two properties. The existing …
Secure Cloud Computing For Solving Large-Scale Linear Systems Of Equations, Xuhui Chen
Secure Cloud Computing For Solving Large-Scale Linear Systems Of Equations, Xuhui Chen
Theses and Dissertations
Solving large-scale linear systems of equations (LSEs) is one of the most common and fundamental problems in big data. But such problems are often too expensive to solve for resource-limited users. Cloud computing has been proposed as an efficient and costeffective way of solving such tasks. Nevertheless, one critical concern in cloud computing is data privacy. Many previous works on secure outsourcing of LSEs have high computational complexity and share a common serious problem, i.e., a huge number of external memory I/O operations, which may render those outsourcing schemes impractical. We develop a practical secure outsourcing algorithm for solving large-scale …
Development Of White Crappie Pomoxis Annularis Reproduction Methods In Closed Aquaculture Systems, Charlie Marcus Culpepper
Development Of White Crappie Pomoxis Annularis Reproduction Methods In Closed Aquaculture Systems, Charlie Marcus Culpepper
Theses and Dissertations
Aquaculture methods are limited for white crappie (Pomoxis annularis), reducing production potential. Therefore, reproduction methods, including induced spawning, sperm cryopreservation and out-of-season spawning, were developed in tank systems. A two week acclimation period (15°C; 3-5 ppt salinity) was necessary to reduce disease-related mortality. Afterwards, four spawning induction hormones and a control were examined to induce spawning. Luteinizing hormone releasing hormone analogue and salmonid gonadotropin releasing hormone analogue performed the best in terms of spawning success and %ertilization. Sperm cryopreservation was effective using Hanks or Ca2+ree Hanks balanced salt solutions with 10%-methanol or 5%-dimethyl-sulfoxide as a cryoprotectant, frozen at 40°C/min. Out-of-season …
The Development Of A Model For Vascular Calcification And The Effects Of Magnesium Supplementation On In Vitro Calcification, Joshua Nathaniel Grant
The Development Of A Model For Vascular Calcification And The Effects Of Magnesium Supplementation On In Vitro Calcification, Joshua Nathaniel Grant
Theses and Dissertations
Cardiovascular disease is most deadly medical condition in the United States. Medial vascular calcification is a disease that often precedes other more serious cardiovascular diseases that have high mortality. In order to research new therapies for the treatment of medial vascular calcification, an in vitro cell culture model must be developed that mimics the process in vivo. This disease is shown to be an active, cell-mediated process where the vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in the arteries are differentiating into osteoblast-like cells and depositing hydroxyapatite mineral in the artery walls. By administering inorganic phosphate to cell culture medium, an osteogenic …

Characterization Of The Ability Of Yeast Probiotics And Paraprobiotics To Directly Interact With Gram-Positive And Gram-Negative Bacteria, Gabriel Alviola Posadas
Theses and Dissertations
Yeast probiotics and paraprobiotics, live and inactivated yeast cells, respectively, improve health and performance of livestock by stabilizing the intestinal microbial community. They have also been used for infection prevention and treatment. Despite much research already conducted, the mechanism of direct antagonism, or adhesion of bacteria to the probiotic/paraprobiotic, is under characterized. Additionally, it is unknown which probiotic/paraprobiotic is optimal to use for specific infections. The interactions between the yeast and certain pathogens were analyzed qualitatively with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and quantitatively with membrane filtration assays. Gram-positive bacteria were found to exhibit specificity under SEM. Through membrane filtration, Listeria …

Design, Synthesis, And Testing Of Bis-Corannulene Receptors For Fullerenes Based On Klärner’S Tethers, Peumie Luckshika Abeyratne Kuragama
Theses and Dissertations
The discovery of the new allotropic forms of elemental carbon (e.g. fullerenes and carbon nanotubes) introduced a novel motif in supramolecular chemistry based on dispersion interactions of curved networks of sp2 hybridized carbon atoms. Buckybowls, the curve-shaped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, appear to be ideal candidates for molecular receptors to recognize fullerenes. Corannulene, the smallest and the best studied buckybowl, has been recognized as one of the important pincers in developing molecular receptors for fullerenes. The main goal of our research is to synthesize corannulene-based molecular receptors for fullerenes with high binding affinities with the use of the pincers preorganized on …

Conserving The Mississippi Gopher Frog (Lithobates Sevosa) Through The Use Of Assisted Reproductive Technologies, Katherine Michelle Graham
Conserving The Mississippi Gopher Frog (Lithobates Sevosa) Through The Use Of Assisted Reproductive Technologies, Katherine Michelle Graham
Theses and Dissertations
The Mississippi gopher frog (MGF, Lithobates sevosa) is a critically endangered amphibian which requires the use of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) to successfully reproduce in captivity. Several challenges to successfully breeding MGFs were investigated to improve reproduction in this species. Accurate identification of biological sex is a necessary first step to reproducing species, thus several non-invasive techniques for sex identification were compared in the weakly dimorphic MGF. Reliably obtaining eggs from female MGFs has also proved difficult, therefore, four exogenous hormone therapies were compared for their success to induce ovulation. Ultrasound imaging was used alongside hormone treatments to improve understanding …

The Evaluation Of Adsorbents For The Removal Of Aflatoxin M1 From Contaminated Milk, Erika D. Womack
The Evaluation Of Adsorbents For The Removal Of Aflatoxin M1 From Contaminated Milk, Erika D. Womack
Theses and Dissertations
Taking precautions to restrain aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) from milk is critical, particularly due to the health and economic impact AFM1 imposes. The predominant post-harvest means of reducing AFM1 in milk includes the addition of sequestering agents to feed to diminish the bioavailability of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), the parent compound of AFM1 found in contaminated feed. Still, residual AFM1 has been found in the milk. Using sequestering agents added to raw milk, we found that activated carbon was the most effective binder to reduce AFM1 contamination. The combination of 0.75% granular activated carbon (GAC) and a flow rate of 0.4 mL/min …
The Role Of Endocannabinoids In Atherosclerosis, Anberitha Tyiona Matthews
The Role Of Endocannabinoids In Atherosclerosis, Anberitha Tyiona Matthews
Theses and Dissertations
Cardiovascular disease leads in morbidity and mortality in Western societies with no known cure. NADPH oxidase (Nox) contributes to atherosclerosis through the indirect activation of macrophages leading to the internalization of oxidized low density lipoproteins (oxLDL). Chronic inflammation in activated macrophages contributes to atherosclerosis. Because macrophages are positioned at the cross-roads of lipid metabolism in vessel walls, they are important in the cellular pathology of atherosclerosis. Components of the endocannabinoid (eCB) system are vital to atherosclerotic development, since the eCB system has been found to play an important role in the amelioration of atherosclerosis. The eCB system has several components, …

Selection Dynamics In Heliconius Hybrid Zones And The Origin Of Adaptive Variation, Steven Grant Shaak
Selection Dynamics In Heliconius Hybrid Zones And The Origin Of Adaptive Variation, Steven Grant Shaak
Theses and Dissertations
There is repeated evidence that hybridization is a major contributor to the production of adaptive diversity; however, the evolutionary fate of hybrids in natural populations remains poorly understood. In Heliconius butterflies, hybridization is common and responsible for generating a variety of warning color patterns across the genus. Predator avoidance of warning colorations appears to largely be learned, which drives strong positive frequency-dependent selection. This creates a paradox for hybrid lineages: how do novel hybrid forms manage to establish and persist under such strong selection? In this dissertation, I present a series of studies centered on the selection dynamics of Heliconius …

Antioxidative Efficacy And Relative Accessible Hydrophobicity Of Aromatic Residue Rich Peptides In Alfa-Chymotryptic Digests Of Acid Casein, Wenjie Shao
Theses and Dissertations
Four casein-derived peptides fractions of varying hydrophobicity were obtained from á-chymotryptic digest of acid casein using hydrophobic interaction chromatography, termed fractions one through four (abbreviated, F1, F2, F3, and F4). Four standard methods involving alkoxyl, peroxyl, 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazl (DPPH), and 2, 2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) ABTS•+ radicals, were used to measure antioxidative properties. While significantly superior efficacy was exhibited by F2 for all tests except against DPPH, no correlation between antioxidant efficacy and surface hydrophobicity was found. By using capillary electrophoresis and high performance liquid chromatography, the detection of aromatic chromophores by ultraviolet at 280 nm in the fractions revealed that …
