The Impact Of Childhood Sexual Abuse On Adulthood Eating Disorders: When Healthy Eating Becomes Unhealthy, Audryn Andreoli
The Impact Of Childhood Sexual Abuse On Adulthood Eating Disorders: When Healthy Eating Becomes Unhealthy, Audryn Andreoli
Theses and Dissertations
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC; 2020c) estimated that approximately 3.7 million children experience childhood sexual abuse (CSA) every year in the United States. CSA is a significant issue associated with negative psychosocial and health-related outcomes, including eating disorders (Afifi et al., 2017). While there has been substantial research completed regarding CSA and eating disorders, there is a significant gap in the literature regarding Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) and CSA. The present study sought to determine whether CSA is a risk factor ON and determine the relationship between frequency of occurrence of CSA, sex, race, previous eating disorder diagnosis, …
Engaging Youth And Families Within The Context Of Evidence-Based Treatment (Ebt) Implementation: Examining Integrity Of Engagement Practices To Different Ebt Information Sources, Eleanor Wu
Theses and Dissertations
Promoting and maintaining client engagement has proven to be a significant challenge across community mental health settings, including within the context of implementing evidence-based treatments (EBTs) (De Haan et al., 2013). Few efforts have been made to equip providers with empirically-sourced engagement strategies outside of the limited set of engagement procedures covered in EBT protocols. To inform efforts for improving EBT accessibility, the current study characterizes the delivery of engagement practices from the literature within the context of EBT implementation, and examines provider integrity of engagement practice use according to two information sources (i.e., the provider’s EBT training history and …

Parenting Practices And Parental Religiosity: The Context Of Region And Conservatism, Melanie Stearns
Parenting Practices And Parental Religiosity: The Context Of Region And Conservatism, Melanie Stearns
Theses and Dissertations
Although parental religiosity generally has been associated with positive child outcomes it also has been connected to the use of corporal punishment and authoritarian parenting style. Thus, other variables must exist which influence how the interaction between religiosity and parenting practices influence child outcomes, such as regional differences (i.e., conservatism, population density, etc.). The current study expanded upon previous literature by examining maternal and paternal variables, extending the study to emerging adults, examining emerging adult gender, various religions, and different regions of the United States (i.e., Northeast, South, Midwest, West), as well as levels of conservatism and population density (i.e., …
Psychometric Properties Of The Spanish Version Of The Treatment Support Measure (Tsm-Sp), Corinne Elizabeth Ruth
Psychometric Properties Of The Spanish Version Of The Treatment Support Measure (Tsm-Sp), Corinne Elizabeth Ruth
Theses and Dissertations
Hispanic youth and families, although they comprise a sizeable portion of the population, are underrepresented in mental health settings within the United States and face significant barriers to receiving adequate treatment. Specifically, the lack of availability of Spanish assessment tools for application in treatment prohibits Hispanic clients from accessing the full extent of available therapeutic resources. The Treatment Support Measure (TSM) is a valid and reliable instrument that allows clinicians and researchers to collect information to better understand change processes and relevant client characteristics in therapy. The present study created a Spanish-translated version of the parent and youth TSM (TSM-SP) …

Children’S Participation Rights In Child Welfare Systems: Identifying Opportunities For Implementation, Anna M. Cody
Children’S Participation Rights In Child Welfare Systems: Identifying Opportunities For Implementation, Anna M. Cody
Theses and Dissertations
Children’s participation rights are critically important for supporting children’s well-being. Studies across the world consistently demonstrate that children and youth feel uninvolved, silenced and marginalized within the child welfare context which has a direct impact on their physical safety as well as their subjective well-being. There has been a shift in US policy and practice towards recognizing the value and importance of engaging youth, older youth in particular, in being involved with planning for their care and for their future. However, definitions of what meaningful “youth engagement” might look like within the child welfare context generally lack clarity. In addition, …

This study found that teamwork, role clarity, and clear decision processes were the most important factors impacting goal accomplishment post-merger. Prioritizing team building before, during, and after a public agency merger can address some of the most common challenges presented by a merger or acquisition.
The Moderating Role Of Developmental Assets On Relations Between Child Maltreatment, Trauma, And Dating Violence, Stephanie A. Hitti
The Moderating Role Of Developmental Assets On Relations Between Child Maltreatment, Trauma, And Dating Violence, Stephanie A. Hitti
Theses and Dissertations
Teenage dating violence (TDV) is prevalent and associated with an array of psychosocial and health problems. Thus, numerous studies have focused on the identification of risk and protective factors for TDV. Child maltreatment has been consistently identified as a risk factor for TDV victimization and perpetration. However, potential underlying mechanisms that may partially explain the relations between child maltreatment and TDV victimization and perpetration are not well understood. The present study explored indirect relations between child maltreatment and TDV victimization and perpetration via trauma symptoms, and examined whether internal and external developmental assets moderated relations between (a) child maltreatment and …
Dating Violence Victimization And Posttraumatic Stress Outcomes Among Urban Adolescents: The Moderating And Mediating Role Of Positive Outlook, Carine Leslie
Theses and Dissertations
Adolescent dating violence occurs far too frequently in early adolescence and is related to adverse mental health outcomes, including posttraumatic stress symptoms. One focus within this literature has been to determine and better understand how protective processes may function in influencing relations between risk factors and dating violence victimization. A protective factor that has not been explored in the dating literature is positive outlook. The current short-term longitudinal study investigated whether dating violence victimization at Time 1 predicted posttraumatic stress symptoms at Time 2 among African American middle school students and examine whether positive outlook moderated or mediated this relation. …
Use Of Formative Research To Inform Family-Based Approaches To Prevent Prescription Opioid Misuse Among Mississippians, Mary Nelson Robertson
Use Of Formative Research To Inform Family-Based Approaches To Prevent Prescription Opioid Misuse Among Mississippians, Mary Nelson Robertson
Theses and Dissertations
The United States is in the midst of an opioid epidemic, which is leading to approximately 130 deaths each day. While research on family-based approaches for substance misuse prevention, such as alcohol and tobacco prevention, has been conducted, few if any studies have focused on prescription opioid misuse prevention. Previous literature suggests that a comprehensive family-based approach can be effective in preventing substance misuse at the family-level. Considering the multiple age groups the sandwich generation cares for, the sandwich generation may have greater access to reaching multiple age groups to prevent prescription opioid misuse. Therefore, the purpose of this study …

Through a single-state survey research design, this study aims to identify the levels and perceptions of collaborative factors among transition professionals, specifically educators, Vocational Rehabilitation professionals, and various community supports providers. Variance in perceptions exist among participant role groups, as well as among …
The Influence Of Preschool Absence Rate And Stability On The School Readiness Of Children, Taylor Watson Poole
The Influence Of Preschool Absence Rate And Stability On The School Readiness Of Children, Taylor Watson Poole
Theses and Dissertations
This pilot study adds to the limited literature by examining various forms of dosage (i.e., absence rate; stability in years) within a quality early childhood center and its links to multiple criterion-referenced indicators of school readiness (i.e., gross motor, fine motor, pre-writing, cognitive, language, self-help, personal/social developmental). The sample included 46 children between the ages of 3 and 4-years-old primarily from middle to upper-middle socioeconomic backgrounds. Absence rates were determined via daily sign-in sheets, while stability was determined according to center records. Results indicate stability, not absence rate, as a statistically significant predictor of better performance on two school readiness …

Helping South Carolina’S Children Thrive: Promoting Protective Factors To Prevent The Long-Term Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences Through The Development Of Evidence-Based Public Health Policies, Aditi Srivastav
Theses and Dissertations
This study considered Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) to be an underlying cause of engagement in risk behaviors and that the implementation of protective factors, or positive relationships and environments, can reduce long-term implications of ACEs. First, this study examined the empirical relationship between safe, stable, and nurturing relationships (SSNRs), exposure to ACEs, and risk behaviors using a population-level health survey in South Carolina. The results of this research, which demonstrate that SSNRs moderate the relationship between ACEs and risk behaviors, provide innovative evidence for the role of protective factors in reducing exposure to ACEs and risk behavior engagement. Next, this …

Changes In Self-Concept And Substance-Related Cognitions During Short-Term Residential Substance Use Treatment, Olivia Grace Larson
Theses and Dissertations
The United States is in the midst of an opioid crisis, with more than 130 people dying each day from an opioid overdose (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2018a). Given the recent spike in overdose deaths associated with highly potent synthetic opioids (i.e., fentanyl), there are few signs of the crisis abating (CDC, 2018a). Compared to other age groups, the prevalence of both heroin and prescription opioid use is particularly elevated among young adults (Sharma, Bruner, Barnett, & Fishman, 2016). While there is a large body of evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of substance use treatment in general, only …

Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study aimed to examine the use and effectiveness of religiosity, spirituality, and creative arts as culturally sensitive forms of coping among adult Latina and/or Hispanic child sexual abuse (CSA) survivors. Research has demonstrated that methods of coping serve as culturally sensitive techniques that help Latinas cope with CSA experiences by fostering feelings of empowerment, pride, and safety (Becker, 2015; Collins, O'Neill-Arana, Fontes, & Osseg, 2014; Ligiero, Fassinger, McCauley, Moore, & Lyytinen, 2009; Marques et al., 2016; Meston, Lorenz, & Stephenson, 2013; Sabina, Cuevas, & Schally, 2012; Sweig, 2000). Despite these findings, these interventions with this specific …
Adaptation Of A Resilience-Oriented Stress Management Intervention For Youth With Type 1 Diabetes, Tamara Michele Rumburg
Adaptation Of A Resilience-Oriented Stress Management Intervention For Youth With Type 1 Diabetes, Tamara Michele Rumburg
Theses and Dissertations
Managing type 1 diabetes involves a complex treatment regimen, and often results in increased stress and mental health issues in youth and families as youth enter adolescence. Research indicates that effective management of diabetes-related stress can have a positive impact on both the psychological and physical health of youth and their families. While traditional stress management interventions have aimed to reduce stress through coping, building resilience is a more recent approach to stress management that can be cultivated even in the absence of stress. Interventions specifically aimed at increasing resilience in youth with chronic illnesses have shown promising results; however, …

Examining Sleep And Family Functioning In Pediatric Craniopharyngioma Using Ecological Momentary Assessment, Nour Al Ghriwati
Theses and Dissertations
Craniopharyngiomas are among the most common brain tumors in children and are associated with greater rates of sleep problems compared to other pediatric cancers. However, research examining sleep among youth with craniopharyngioma has been limited by a reliance on retrospective reports or sleep studies. Families also play a crucial role in children’s adjustment following a pediatric cancer diagnosis, yet remarkably little is known about transactional associations between family functioning and sleep in pediatric cancer. This study examined cross-sectional and daily associations among family functioning, affect, and sleep difficulties for youth with pediatric craniopharyngioma using retrospective reports and ecological momentary assessment …

Stress-Buffering Of Social Support On Depressive Problems: Moderation By Parental Depressive Problems, Erica Marie Szkody
Theses and Dissertations
The impact of parental depressive problems on children’s depressive symptoms has been widely studied. The Stress Buffering Hypothesis states that social support acts as a protective factor between the impacts of stress from negative life events on physical and psychological health. The current study examined the stress buffering hypothesis in terms of the relationship between parental depressive problems and emerging adult depressive problems. The differential buffering strength of both perceived social support and received social support between stress from negative life events and depressive problems were examined along with the moderating effects of parent and emerging adult gender. Neither perceived …

Advancing Understanding Of Dynamic Mechanisms In Onset To Event Models: Discrete Time Survival Mediation With A Time Variant Mediator, Heather Lasky Mcdaniel
Advancing Understanding Of Dynamic Mechanisms In Onset To Event Models: Discrete Time Survival Mediation With A Time Variant Mediator, Heather Lasky Mcdaniel
Theses and Dissertations
Integrating discrete time survival and mediation analytic approaches, discretetime survival mediation models (DTSM) help researchers elucidate the impact of predictors on the timing of event occurrence. Though application of this model has been gainful in various applied developmental and intervention research contexts, empirical work has yet to consider how DTSM models operate with a mediator that has a varying effect over time. The importance of examining this situation has important impacts for application of the model, given more complex statistical models are required, and subsequent interpretation of model parameters differ from the basic DTSM model. The overarching purpose of this …
Developing A Measure Of Empowerment In Schools, Abby Albright Bode
Developing A Measure Of Empowerment In Schools, Abby Albright Bode
Theses and Dissertations
Youth empowerment is widely defined as youth being actively involved in and influencing their environment in such a way as to foster positive developmental trajectories. Youth empowerment is fostered by such external aspects as positive relationships with adults, having a safe and supportive environment, and being included as meaningful contributors to teams. Given these aspects that enhance empowerment, schools are poised to provide a natural context for fostering youth empowerment. Relatedly, there is a national movement toward more comprehensive school mental health (SMH) programs and services, and building youth empowerment within this field is a logical and needed step, but …
