Creating Resilient, Sustainable Local Governments: Merging Human Resource Management And Emergency Management, Stacey Cole Mann

Theses and Dissertations

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Goodman and Mann (2008) found that many locales along the Mississippi Gulf Coast did not have plans that addressed human resources (HR) issues in the aftermath of a disaster, and many vital employees were not included in the emergency planning process. The authors concluded that if involved in planning, HR managers could address typical HR issues such as compensation, retention, recruitment, and task re-orientation that become more difficult following a disaster. Research indicates that many youth-serving agencies do not adopt evidence-based innovations in the field of youth violence prevention. This qualitative study was designed to explore a sample of community-based decision makers’ perceptions of why innovative, evidence-based programs and practices for the prevention of violence by youth are, or are not, adopted at the local level. The rationale for this study was that knowledge of evidence-based innovations in youth violence prevention originates primarily from research scientists who are external to the organizations that are the intended recipients of the innovations. Prior research has not viewed the failure to adopt evidence-based innovations …

In Search Of Best Practices: A Case Study Of A Volunteer-Led Nonprofit Organization's Failure To Deliver Aid, Leah Weiner

Theses and Dissertations

Across the globe, many long-term social service and infrastructure projects of nonprofits are managed by volunteers who freely donate their time to provide aid. Some of these organizations are referred to as voluntary nonprofit organizations with membership being voluntary. As a result, turnover impacts the ability of many volunteer-led nonprofits to achieve their goals. The unique characteristics of volunteers combined with volunteer turnover requires a volunteer-led nonprofit to use organizational models and best practices that align with the needs of a volunteer membership. Unfortunately, current research on the nonprofit sector focuses primarily on paid-staff nonprofit organizations as oppose to volunteer-led. …

A Profile Of Inner-City Public School Districts: A Comparative Analysis Of U.S. Metropolitan Area Demographics And The Abandonment Of Neighborhood Schools, Belinda Saunders Aug 2010

A Profile Of Inner-City Public School Districts: A Comparative Analysis Of U.S. Metropolitan Area Demographics And The Abandonment Of Neighborhood Schools, Belinda Saunders

Theses and Dissertations

Most departments of education and school boards do not identify nor compile data reasons for public school abandonments. Public schools are anchors, vital components, and “heartbeats” of communities that contribute to the growth or decline of neighborhoods. Despite the influences that public schools have on the development and sustainability of neighborhoods, public school abandonments are increasing. School systems use abandonments to address challenges of poor academic achievements, decreasing budgets, declining enrollments, and deteriorating and underutilized facilities. However, absent from literature are comprehensive data and analyses that identify the number of public school abandonments, their locations, or the contributing factors for …

Throughout the twentieth century various urban design theories came into light. These theories were sometimes original and sometimes derivative of some previous theory. These theories can be broadly categorized in different urban design models. Socializing Youth For Adult Citizenship Roles: The Youth Citizenship Seminar, Melvin L. Musick Jan 2008

Socializing Youth For Adult Citizenship Roles: The Youth Citizenship Seminar, Melvin L. Musick

Theses and Dissertations

This study reports the results of an online questionnaire administered to a sample of adults who participated in a weeklong youth citizenship seminar at a private Christian university between 1986 and 2006. Using constructs put forth by Westheimer & Kahne (2004a), the study finds that former seminar participants demonstrate noteworthy levels of personally responsible and participatory citizenship, but less involvement in justiceoriented citizenship activities. Voting by respondents who were exposed to political issues or discussions held in their home was significant at the <0.05 level. Voting by respondents whose parents were active politically was significant at the <0.01 level. The study is responsive to concerns regarding effective strategies for increasing the probability of adolescents becoming involved citizens as adults. The study also informs the discussion on the developmental roots of civic involvement, and further elaborates the link between adolescent involvement in youth programs and adult civic behavior.

An Examination Of The Perceived College Leadership, Governance, And Decision Making From Governing Board Members At Selected Midwest Tribal Colleges, William L. Gourneau

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional American Indian leadership was the foundation of today‘s Indian leadership. The belief in the Indian value system, which was integrated throughout traditional leadership, has greatly contributed to leadership qualities for Indian people. A change in how Native Americans interpret Indian leadership began with the introduction of tribal governments. Tribal governments forced Indian people into a different form of leadership. Although new leadership roles came into existence, the concept of traditional leadership continued. Many current tribal leaders were looked upon favorably if they possess traditional cultural values. Even today, elders and community members with strong cultural knowledge are sought out …

Codes Of Interaction, Timothy Michael Martin Jan 2005

Codes Of Interaction, Timothy Michael Martin

Theses and Dissertations

The ideas within this thesis are meant to clarify my explorations, research and painting practice during my studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. I expand on my general statements about being fascinated by advancing technologies and concerned about the after effects of these advancements. The writing explores my curiosity about the internal, skeletal structure of things and how they operate. I explain how the paintings are idiosyncratic hybrids that evoke animation, imaginary scientific propositions, blueprints, maps, and advancing technologies. The work combines these interests with my observations of day-to-day experiences. Isolated events provide found compositions which I then manipulate: a seemingly …

A Study Of Course Design Factors That Influence E-Learning Course Completion Rates, Edward A. Mathews Mar 2004

A Study Of Course Design Factors That Influence E-Learning Course Completion Rates, Edward A. Mathews

Theses and Dissertations

E-learning has been defined as "the use of network technologies to create, foster, deliver, and facilitate learning, anytime and anywhere" (Linezine, 2000). E-learning is one of the fastest growing services on the Internet today with revenues between 6 billion and 7 billion dollars (Bizreport, 2003). This growth comes with a peculiar problem - many students never complete their e-learning courses. Although there is significant variation among institutions - with some reporting course-completion rates of more than 80 percent and others finding that fewer than 50 percent of distance-education students finish their course...course-completion rates are often 10 to 20 percentage points …
