Attitudes Of Undergraduate Students Toward Racial/Ethnic Issues And Groups At The University Of North Dakota., Marlene Ibrahim Bengiamin
Theses and Dissertations
A key goal of multicultural education is to help students attain more positive racial attitudes. Racial incidents on college and university campuses in the United States attracted national attention. The schools in Western societies need to act decisively to help students acquire more democratic attitudes and values. The literature suggests that schools can help students become less prejudiced and acquire more democratic attitudes and values. The purpose of this study was to examine students' attitudes toward racial/ethnic issues and groups and to identify predictors of attitudes among undergraduate college students (N = 583). Data were gathered using a three part survey …

Inter-Campus Relations As Perceived By Branch Campus And Main Campus Administrators, Dean Rodney Hermanson
Theses and Dissertations
Little research has been conducted of two-year branch campuses of higher education institutions. In particular, the relationship between the branch campus administrator and the main campus administrator has not been studied. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare perceptions of branch campus administrators with perceptions of their main campus administrators regarding the quantity and quality of their communication and interaction. The second purpose was to identify the elements which contribute to a positive or a negative relationship between branch and main campus administrators.
Specific research questions were the following: (1) What are the perceptions of branch campus administrators …
Changing Attitudes Toward Lesbian Women And Gay Men Through Self-Confrontation, Sally A. Kennedy
Changing Attitudes Toward Lesbian Women And Gay Men Through Self-Confrontation, Sally A. Kennedy
Theses and Dissertations
Prejudice against lesbian women and gay men is widespread. Intolerance ranges from negative beliefs to exclusion from mainstream society, denial of civil rights and legal protection, as well as harassment and physical violence. Furthermore, it is socially acceptable to hold negative attitudes toward this group. There is no condemnation for doing so, unlike the case with racism. Given the extent of oppression faced by lesbians and gay men, research on attitude change is critical.
This study explored the characteristics of college students that contribute to negative attitudes toward lesbians and gay men, and investigated whether Rokeach’s method of self-confrontation is …

Relationships Between Early Parent-Child Variables And Later Psychological Adjustment Among Female Adult Children Of Alcoholics And Controls., Bette Bakke-Jumper
Theses and Dissertations
The present study examined the quality of the early child-parent relationship as predictors of adult psychological adjustment of women raised in alcoholic and non-alcoholic homes. While alcoholic family systems are generally recognized as a major source of stress to a large segment of our society, few studies have been successful in identifying the essential factors which may account for the wide variability in the responses of children and adults to the early experiences of family alcoholism. It was predicted that parental alcoholism and increased levels of conflict and violence would contribute significantly to adjustment difficulties and that early positive parent …

The Effect Of Consolidating Two-Level Reparable Inventories On Aggregate Inventory Requirements And Mission Capability, Glenn R. Barney
The Effect Of Consolidating Two-Level Reparable Inventories On Aggregate Inventory Requirements And Mission Capability, Glenn R. Barney
Theses and Dissertations
One of the proposals of Lean Logistics is the relocation of many inventory assets to Intermediate Supply Points (ISPs). This research investigates the effect of consolidating Two Level Maintenance designated reparable asset inventories. The effects of interest are the potential reduction in aggregate inventory requirement and resulting savings and the effect of delayed issue of the assets on mission capability. The metric selected to measure the effect on mission capability for this study is the Not Mission Capable-Supply (NMCS) rate. A spreadsheet analysis of world-wide Two-Level Maintenance designated reparable asset demands over the study period is used to determine the …

The Implementation Of Federal Government Policy In The Reuse Planning Of Military Installations: A Case Study Of Gentile Air Force Station, John L. Hoover
Theses and Dissertations
Local communities affected by a base closure are uncertain as to their future and look to the federal government for guidance and economic assistance in rebuilding their local economy. The local communities want to close the base with as little federal government interference as possible and convert the base to civilian use with as much federal financial assistance as possible. During 1993-1994 two Air Force Institute of Technology research teams began longitudinal case studies of the base closure and rescue process at Gentile Air Force Station, Ohio to determine the effectiveness of the federal government's current approach. These research teams …
Assisting Defense Conversion Technology Transfer Efforts. A Case Study Of Ohio's Miami Valley, Marissa C. Salvador
Assisting Defense Conversion Technology Transfer Efforts. A Case Study Of Ohio's Miami Valley, Marissa C. Salvador
Theses and Dissertations
Major changes in the geopolitical environment and the social and economic needs of the United States have resulted in resources being shifted away from national defense. Although the expected decrease in defense spending should not be harmful in macroeconomic terms, it can be devastating locally. To mitigate the effects of the drawdown, individual states and local communities must search for ways to bolster their local economies. One avenue that can be pursued to enhance future economic growth is the transferring of technologies to the commercial sector. Intermediary organizations have emerged to facilitate the process of technology transfer by serving as …

The Relationship Between Non-Native English Speakers' English Proficiency And Their Callings In The Lds Church In The United States, Dena Marie Wright Erickson
Theses and Dissertations
As part of BYU's Distance Learning Project to teach English for gospel purposes, a committee created a survey to assess the English needs of LDS non-native English speakers in native-language units in the United States. In addition to survey data, this thesis uses qualitative information from focus groups, and interviews to illustrate the statistical findings. The theory underlying this research is that learning precedes involvement in a community. Although learning in the LDS Church community is multi-faceted, this study examines the learning …

Data was collected through two questionnaire surveys and an information sheet. Subjects were 72 full-time secondary Catholic school teachers. Analyses …

A Study To Determine The Effects That Concrete Manipulatives Have On Mathematics Anxiety And Achievement, Nicholas R. Brian Simione
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this five week study was to test any effects that concrete manipulatives had on mathematics anxiety and achievement. Two groups of high school freshmen were selected. A control group (n = 23) was taught using traditional teaching methods of lecture-homework-review-test. An experimental group (n = 20) used concrete manipulatives to reinforce a lesson after it was introduced. Manipulatives replaced worksheets as the sole source of review.
To assess changes in mathematics anxiety in the experimental group, the adolescent version of the Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS-A) was administered. The researcher used dependent t test procedures to determine …

Women Who Choose: The Theme Of Mothering In Selected Dramas, Becky K. Becker

Too often, the drama treats mothering as the expected outcome of marriage or as a biological necessity for women. Yet, dramatic texts which address the issue of mothering do exist. This paper examines the unique mothering choices made by the central characters in three dramatic texts: Sophie Treadwell’s Machinal. Ruth Wolff’s The Abdication, and Wendy Wasserstein’s The Heidi Chronicles.
Chapter One introduces the selected theories of Ann Dally, Nancy Chodorow, and Barbara Katz Rothman, theorists whose diverse perceptions concerning mothering converge to provide an analysis of the complexity of mothering choices. Chapters Two through Four include analyses of the three …
