“No One Ever Forced Them To”: Law Enforcement Perceptions Of And Experiences With Human Sex Trafficking, Chloe Parker
“No One Ever Forced Them To”: Law Enforcement Perceptions Of And Experiences With Human Sex Trafficking, Chloe Parker
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I explore how law enforcement officials in Mississippi and Alabama make sense of and respond to human sex trafficking cases. The central questions guiding this research project are: How do law enforcement officials perceive sex trafficking and what does this mean for victim identification and treatment? By conducting 20 interviews with law enforcement officials, I offer insight into how the training, or lack of training, officers receive impacts victim identification, labeling, and treatment. Further, I examine how perceptions, experiences, and training work to influence officer responses to those that do not fit a typical victim narrative, such …
Nations Imagined Online: A Case Study Of The Villoux Server System, Tyler Daniel
Nations Imagined Online: A Case Study Of The Villoux Server System, Tyler Daniel
Theses and Dissertations
Online communities have become commonplace in the modern world, developing on nearly every website and application. These communities can develop on a singular website, e.g. forums like Reddit and 4Chan where like-minded people can discuss and share ideas and websites like Facebook and Twitter which capitalize on social interactions; they develop around gaming platforms, e.g. Xbox live chat or Minecraft servers; and they can develop on applications solely developed to engage with other people, e.g. Internet relay-chatrooms and TikTok. The communities formed from these online services may differ in purpose but ultimately all function within the realm of an online …
Quantitative Methods To Solve Problems In Animal Populations Using Animal Shelters As A Model, Cassandra Joelle Cain
Quantitative Methods To Solve Problems In Animal Populations Using Animal Shelters As A Model, Cassandra Joelle Cain
Theses and Dissertations
United States animal shelters care for unwanted animals until they are adopted, transferred to another facility, or euthanized. However, there are unanswered questions about what factors predict these outcomes, and what risks shelter dogs pose to human public health. The objective of this thesis was to use quantitative methods to answer questions in animal shelters that apply not only to the animals housed within them, but also the personnel that they employ. One chapter of this thesis will focus on defining humane organizations in the United States and quantifying the number of shelters that exist in five US states. The …
Explaining Individual And Contextual-Level Determinants Of Social Tolerance And The Emotional Burden Of Social Intolerance, Ismail Hakki Yigit
Explaining Individual And Contextual-Level Determinants Of Social Tolerance And The Emotional Burden Of Social Intolerance, Ismail Hakki Yigit
Theses and Dissertations
Diversity is an inevitable condition of modern societies, in which individuals come into contact with one another with various backgrounds; such as, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, religion, and ideology. My dissertation answers three questions: what are the individual characteristics that influence social tolerance of people?’ What are the important things (education level, economic condition, gender, religiosity, etc.) that hold people in a society together as well as influence them positively or negatively to report social tolerance toward religiously different, racially different, sexually different (homosexuals), and nationally (immigrants) different people? From there, I am also trying to answer, if any, …
“Say Something!”: Examining The Bystander In Sexual Harassment, Lida Ponce
“Say Something!”: Examining The Bystander In Sexual Harassment, Lida Ponce
Theses and Dissertations
This research addresses the problem of sexual harassment in the workplace. Past research on harassment has primarily investigated the victim and the perpetrator, with limited research on bystanders in these events. However, bystanders can play an important role in the occurrence and outcomes of harassment by speaking up and intervening, particularly when the victim is too intimidated to do so. Therefore, this research examined this issue, focusing on factors influencing bystander intentions to intervene in sexual harassment incidents. Specifically, drawing from the Cognitive-Affective Processing System approach (Mischel & Shoda, 1995), this study investigated the construct of give/take/match (Grant, 2013) as …
Characterization Of Written Text Using Data And Network Science, Harith A. Hamdon Hamoodat
Characterization Of Written Text Using Data And Network Science, Harith A. Hamdon Hamoodat
Theses and Dissertations
The success of humans cannot be attributed to language, but it is certainly true that language and humans are inseparable. Since the first language appeared, we have seen that language continually evolving over space and social gatherings to formed around 7,000 languages today. The origin and evolution of languages still vague, and state-of-the-art in languages evolution still lack a comprehensive characterization. In general, this problem is mainly tackled by statistical measuring the changes on the part of the language ( e.g., words and sounds). Given the current availability of data and computational power, this dissertation proposes a comprehensive data-driven characterization …
The Relationship Between Place Attachment And Socioscientific Reasoning Among High School Students In Puerto Rico After Negotiation With Local And Foreign Socioscientific Issues, Lorraine Judith Ramírez Villarín
The Relationship Between Place Attachment And Socioscientific Reasoning Among High School Students In Puerto Rico After Negotiation With Local And Foreign Socioscientific Issues, Lorraine Judith Ramírez Villarín
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this mixed-method study was to explore the relationship between place attachment and socioscientific reasoning (SSR) of Puerto Rican high school students through debate and discourse of local and foreign socioscientific issues (SSI). The specific research questions were, (1) what is the extent of the participants’ place attachment to the island of Puerto Rico, (2) are there differences in SSR between groups working with local and foreign SSI, (3) is there a correlation between place attachment and SSR, (4) are there differences in SSR between scenarios after SSI negotiation, and (5) do negotiation and discourse improve after SSI …
Labor Rights And Foreign Direct Investment In Latin America: The Empirical Analysis Of Proximity Hypothesis, Cesar H. Villegas
Labor Rights And Foreign Direct Investment In Latin America: The Empirical Analysis Of Proximity Hypothesis, Cesar H. Villegas
Theses and Dissertations
What impact do labor rights practices have on foreign direct investment (FDI) in Latin America? While existing research shows how participation in the global production network influences host country’s labor standards, few studies delve into reversed causal mechanisms whereby changes in labor standards affects FDI inflows. While conventional wisdom says protection of labor rights has negative influence on FDI, I argue that for Latin American countries, practical protection of labor rights attracts FDI. Practical protection of labor right acts as a proxy and signals that host government could protect foreign assets that are under the risk of expropriation. I expect …
Peripheral Dopamine 2 Receptors Both Modulate Central Dopamine Release And Adopt In A Similar Manner To That Of Central Dopamine 2 Receptors, J. Daniel Obray
Peripheral Dopamine 2 Receptors Both Modulate Central Dopamine Release And Adopt In A Similar Manner To That Of Central Dopamine 2 Receptors, J. Daniel Obray
Theses and Dissertations
Alcohol use disorder is a debilitating disorder affecting nearly 5% of people in the United States. Despite the prevalence of alcohol use disorder few affected individuals seek treatment and of those who do many will relapse. This highlights a need to develop new treatments for alcohol use disorder that are both more accessible and more effective. This dissertation characterizes a novel pathway involved in ethanol enhancement of dopamine levels in the nucleus accumbens as well as investigating alterations in dopamine 2 receptor expression and function following an acute dose of ethanol. This was done by using microdialysis to measure dopamine …

Sclerocactus Wrightiae (Cactaceace): An Evaluation Of The Impacts Associated With Cattle Grazing And The Use Of Remote Sensing To Assess Cactus Detectability, Thomas Hathaway Bates
Theses and Dissertations
The Wright fishhook cactus (Sclerocactus wrightiae L.D. Benson) is an endangered cactus species endemic to south-central Utah. Since its listing in 1979 by the U.S. Fish and Wildife Service, the potential impacts of soil disturbance by cattle have become a central focus of management policies and monitoring efforts. However, little to no empirical data has been collected to substantiate the hypothesis that soil disturbance by cattle has direct or indirect negative effects on Wright fishhook cactus growth or reproduction. Over the years, the Bureau of Land Mangement (BLM) and Capitol Reef National Park (CRNP) have invested significant resources documenting cactus …
What Motives Drive Pornography Consumption, Charlotte R. Esplin
What Motives Drive Pornography Consumption, Charlotte R. Esplin
Theses and Dissertations
Pornography use has become widespread and mainstream in American society, with estimates that 60% of men and 35% of women have viewed pornography at some time in the last year. Pornography use has been associated with both positive and negative outcomes depending on the user, and some of these conflicting results may stem from problematic measurement. Using a newly validated measure that assesses frequency, duration, arousal, and deliberate or accidental exposure to seven common types of pornography, we sought to understand if the motivations to view pornography differed depending on biological sex of the user and the type of use …
International Marriages: Culture, Identity Formation, Social And Historical Context, Alec Bryan Schaer
International Marriages: Culture, Identity Formation, Social And Historical Context, Alec Bryan Schaer
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this research is to examine how changes in sociopolitical and cultural landscapes affect the cultural and personal identities of individuals engaged in mixed heritage relationships. I examine relationships between Japanese women and American men to illustrate that the wider socio-political contexts of these individuals play key roles in how they view and portray themselves in relation to others; as Japanese, American, both, or neither.
This research is divided into two distinct periods, one before WWII and a second after WWII. For each of these periods, I examined the relevant socio-political and cultural circumstances which affected Japanese and …
You Say You Want A Revolution: A Multiple Case Study Of Diversity And Inclusion Messages To Transform Engineering Culture, Stephanie Lezotte
You Say You Want A Revolution: A Multiple Case Study Of Diversity And Inclusion Messages To Transform Engineering Culture, Stephanie Lezotte
Theses and Dissertations
Lack of diversity in engineering programs has drawn recent national attention (National Science Foundation, 2017). Scholars have suggested the normative engineering culture perpetuates the marginalization of students and faculty with excluded identities (Leydens & Lucena, 2017; Seymour & Hewitt, 1997; Walden, Trytten, Shehab, & Foor, 2018). This multiple case study examined three engineering units committed to creating an inclusive engineering culture that values social justice in order to redefine the "ideal" engineer. The overarching research question was: How do engineering diversity champions produce and circulate institutional messages about diversity and inclusion? Drawing from communications studies, cultural studies, and organizational theory, …
Long-Term Opiate-Induced Adaptations In Lateral Paracapsular Neurons Of The Basolateral Amygdala, Sara Jane Werner
Long-Term Opiate-Induced Adaptations In Lateral Paracapsular Neurons Of The Basolateral Amygdala, Sara Jane Werner
Theses and Dissertations
Increases in basolateral amygdala (BLA) activity drive avoidance-seeking behavior that may be associated with stress induced drug seeking. Activity of BLA pyramidal neurons is regulated by local and paracapsular gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) interneurons. The lateral paracapsular interneurons (LPCs) border the external capsule, receive dense cortical/thalamic input and provide feed-forward inhibition onto BLA principle neurons. The GABAergic LPCs also express high concentrations of g-protein coupled µ-opioid receptors (MORs). Therefore, the effects of opiates on LPC activity and local GABA release were examined. Fluorescently double labeled LPCs were observed in glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) 65-mcherry/GAD67-green fluorescent protein (GFP) transgenic mice. Whole-cell electrophysiology …
An Analysis Of School Climate Surveys As A Measure Of Student Voice, Deanna L. Oliver
An Analysis Of School Climate Surveys As A Measure Of Student Voice, Deanna L. Oliver
Theses and Dissertations
Student voice may seem like a new concept; however, it has a long history of being engrained in public schools in the United States. The trend towards incorporating and expanding student voice opportunities in high school is based on the tenets of democracy. Educators seek to provide an opportunity for students to practice democracy in their school environment. Students are commonly disregarded as viable stakeholders in their schools. The Illinois State Board of Education offers students in grades 4 through 12 the opportunity to provide input on their schools using the Illinois 5Essentials Survey.
This research sought the input from …

Participants were from the American Families of Faith Project, a qualitative study on religion and family life with participants from 198 Christian, Jewish, and Muslim families (N = 478) across the United States. The primary research questions of present study were (a) what does love mean for families? (b) why do individuals and couples in families love? (c) how is love experienced? (d) what are the related processes of love? (e) how does religion influence love in religious families? and (f) what are the reported outcomes …
Listening As A Sanctuary From Human Annihilation: Euripides' Trojan Women And The Global Humanitarian Crisis., Chiara Aliberti
Listening As A Sanctuary From Human Annihilation: Euripides' Trojan Women And The Global Humanitarian Crisis., Chiara Aliberti
Theses and Dissertations
The scope of this research is to spark conversation among members of receiving communities concerning their attitudes toward displaced populations by using Euripides' Trojan Women as a facilitator. By many outside the Classics profession, the study of antiquity is often perceived as a discipline disconnected from current issues; however, remembering and examining the past can greatly shape the present. Ancient Greek theater is perhaps the genre that best lends itself to be scrutinized today for social purposes. In fact, it promoted introspection among the body of Athenian citizens by highlighting inequalities and imbalances in power structures between opposing parties. This …
Cognitive Demands Of Mothers Of Young Children In The Presence Of Emotional Distraction, Michelle Duersch
Cognitive Demands Of Mothers Of Young Children In The Presence Of Emotional Distraction, Michelle Duersch
Theses and Dissertations
Stress and parenting often go hand in hand, with high physical and emotional demands from children often coupled with pressures and responsibilities adults bear from work, school, and other involvements outside the home. Parents often prioritize their children's needs above their own physical, emotional, and social needs. While current literature addresses stress in mothers, it has yet to understand under what circumstances her children may modify her stress levels and whether her stress response, in turn, affects cognition. This study seeks to investigate the impact of such a taxing environment on mothers' stress and cognition using a challenging mnemonic discrimination …
Teacher Retention And Recruitment: Perceptions Of Principles, Teachers, And University Students, Scott Phillip Harris
Teacher Retention And Recruitment: Perceptions Of Principles, Teachers, And University Students, Scott Phillip Harris
Theses and Dissertations
This study identifies differences in perceptions between three stakeholder groups - principals, K-12 teachers, and parents - regarding the effect of workplace conditions on teacher attrition. An electronic questionnaire was sent to 15 of Utah's 41 school districts. Sampling efforts yielded completed surveys from 93 principals, 2003 teachers and 495 parents. All three groups agreed that workplace conditions are important, but the greatest disagreements occurred in perceptions of (a) teacher involvement in decision-making, (b) protection of teacher preparation time, (c) administration's management of student discipline, (d) adequacy of resource availability, (e) the degree to which a trusting and supportive school …
Mnemonic Discrimination: Correcting False Memories And Detecting Changes In Time, Nathan M. Muncy
Mnemonic Discrimination: Correcting False Memories And Detecting Changes In Time, Nathan M. Muncy
Theses and Dissertations
Two projects are presented in this dissertation. First, we investigated the impact of false memories on the original trace and whether recovery of the original is possible. Second, we tested whether mnemonic discrimination for temporal duration is possible. Both projects incorporated fMRI techniques in order to implicate any potential neural correlates of these memory behaviors. Project One. To elicit false memories and study a potential recovery therefrom, thirty-five healthy, young adults performed multiple recognition memory tests where they were induced to make errors in a first test and then participants were tested again in a surprise, second test. These two …
Priviledge And Place: An Exploratory Study About Healthcare Bypass Behavior, Jorden Elizabeth Jackson
Priviledge And Place: An Exploratory Study About Healthcare Bypass Behavior, Jorden Elizabeth Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
Bypass, or utilizing healthcare outside of one’s community rather than local healthcare, can have serious consequences on rural healthcare availability, quality, and outcomes. Previous studies of the likelihood of healthcare bypass used various individual and community characteristics. This study includes measures for individuals and communities, as well as place-based characteristics. We introduce the social vulnerability of place index (SoVI)—a well-established measure in disaster literature—into healthcare studies to further explain the impact of place on healthcare selection behavior. Additionally, with the use of qualitative data, this study explains why people choose to bypass. By including each of these measures, this study …
College Choice, Consumer Behavior, And Gender Enrollment Patterns: A Mixed Methods Case Study Of Marathon University, Jessica I. Prach
College Choice, Consumer Behavior, And Gender Enrollment Patterns: A Mixed Methods Case Study Of Marathon University, Jessica I. Prach
Theses and Dissertations
Gender and enrollment patterns in higher education have changed over the past 40 years, where women are now the majority of students enrolling in colleges and universities nationally each year compared to men (U.S. Department of Education, 2018b). Despite enrollment trends indicating a dramatic increase of female students at colleges and universities, Marathon University has experienced the opposite. The purpose of this concurrent, mixed methods case studies was to identify why female students are choosing not to enroll at Marathon University, despite relatively even rates of application and admission compared to male students. The intent of this study was to …
Thou Shalt Lie: Anticipatory Deflection Management, Victoria L. Money
Thou Shalt Lie: Anticipatory Deflection Management, Victoria L. Money
Theses and Dissertations
As people visualize ongoing or future interactions, do they lie to maintain situational congruency? While visualizing various behavioral options, or the outcomes of such behaviors, people have a unique opportunity to preemptively alter the definition of the situation based on anticipated sentiments. Affect Control Theory emphasizes the salience of deflection management in everyday life. This is otherwise known as an attempted realignment of experiences and expectations in the face of situational incongruency such as the bizarre. Using a vignette experiment, I extend Affect Control Theory by illuminating deflection not yet experienced but instead anticipated. I do so by estimating the …
The Cultural Relevance Of Music Education As It Relates To African American Students In South Carolina, Felicia Denise Denise Myers Bulgozdy
The Cultural Relevance Of Music Education As It Relates To African American Students In South Carolina, Felicia Denise Denise Myers Bulgozdy
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, Critical Race Theory is used to examine the current curriculum that preservice music teachers are taught, and are consequently teaching K-12 students, in an effort to illustrate the need for Culturally Relevant Pedagogy. Documents such as the S.C. All-State Choral rubric, as well as a list of required courses for future music educators at a local university, are studied to show the overwhelming European influence on the curriculum that is being taught in music classes daily across the state, and demonstrate the lack of cultural relevance to the African American students in those classes. Culturally Relevant Pedagogy …
Studying The “Snip”: A Multi-Methods Exploration Of Vasectomy In The Southern United States, Ashley Lauren White
Studying The “Snip”: A Multi-Methods Exploration Of Vasectomy In The Southern United States, Ashley Lauren White
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: To date, women have primarily born the physical, emotional, and financial burden of contraceptive use. Men, on the other hand, have remained largely absent from conversations about pregnancy prevention and reproduction, in part because of the lingering assumption that men are uninterested in contraception. Vasectomy, one of only three available male-centered contraceptive options, represents a rare opportunity for men to control their reproduction and take on a more equitable role in pregnancy prevention. Even though vasectomy is 99.9% effective at preventing pregnancy, the method remains underused in the United States, particularly in the southern states where prevalence lags behind …
Swept Away Before Learning To Swim: Social Studies Subject Area Literacy For High School Students, Aaron K. Shaw
Swept Away Before Learning To Swim: Social Studies Subject Area Literacy For High School Students, Aaron K. Shaw
Theses and Dissertations
History education provides a valuable asset in the education of youth from the integration of disciplines to the opportunity to stimulate higher order thinking in high school students. However, little research before the 1990’s had been done to improve the century old pedagogy of presentation and memorization. This study looked at the historical thinking skills of sourcing, contextualization and corroboration, presented in Sam Wineburg’s (1991b) research comparing high school students with professional historians. This mixed methods study explored the impact of focused instruction in high school social studies classrooms using the three historical thinking skills to determine the effectiveness …
International Conflict, Political Leaders, And Accountability, William Thomas Christiansen
International Conflict, Political Leaders, And Accountability, William Thomas Christiansen
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the role that an individual leader’s background (e.g. what they did before gaining power) plays in public evaluations of their performance managing international conflicts. I propose a novel theory arguing domestic audience members (e.g. the citizens of a leader’s state paying attention to international conflicts) heuristically analyze the competence of a leader by examining their professional and educational background. Once audience members determine whether a leader is competent, they use these judgments to inform whether a given leader deserves blame or credit for the outcome of a given conflict. I find support for this theory by fielding …
The Impact Of Hotel Service Robot Appearance And Service Attributes On Customer Experience, Chuhan Thomsen
The Impact Of Hotel Service Robot Appearance And Service Attributes On Customer Experience, Chuhan Thomsen
Theses and Dissertations
In the past decade, an increasing discussion has taken place regarding the employment of hotel service robots. One critical issue is the impact service robots exhibit on customer experience. However, most of the existing studies focus on service robots’ technical functions or customer’s adoption behavior instead of customers’ psychological or attitudinal reactions toward the robot. Meanwhile, the emergence of humanoid robots has raised great attention from both researchers and industry practitioners. Humanlike features (e.g. facial expressions, emotions, and motions) inherently affect customer experience in a hotel environment. Nevertheless, limited literature exists in incorporating service robots’ anthropomorphism and service attributes into …
Sticks And Stones May Break My Bones: Social Undermining As Social Influence, Jason Kautz
Sticks And Stones May Break My Bones: Social Undermining As Social Influence, Jason Kautz
Theses and Dissertations
The current social undermining literature suggests the important role of the witness in determining the negative impact on the victim. However, the literature has yet to explicitly explore the witness’ role in social undermining. In this dissertation, I integrate theory and research on social influence and emotions to develop a framework that suggests social undermining be considered a form of social influence. This framework allows for the exploration of the witness’ sense-making process following a social undermining event along with the accumulated effects of repeated exposure to a series of social undermining events. I propose that social undermining influences witness …
Newcomer Student-Athlete Perceptions Of Coaches’ Socialization Strategies: Scale Development, Evelyn Su Jara-Pazmino
Newcomer Student-Athlete Perceptions Of Coaches’ Socialization Strategies: Scale Development, Evelyn Su Jara-Pazmino
Theses and Dissertations
In this era of multi-million dollar paydays, the need to fill arenas and the pressure to win has increased dramatically. In order to build a winning program, the coaching staff turns to national and international recruiting. According to David Ching, Senior Contributor of Forbes, “Nearly every Power Five college athletics program spends more than $1 million per year on recruiting” (Ching, 2018). The fact that student-athletes have a limited time of four years of eligibility to perform for their institutions, results in a continuous influx of newcomers to the team. Student-athletes with a diverse cultural background have to adapt to …
