Missing Piece Of The Puzzle: Creating A General Meaning Of Sex Measure, Veronica R. Hanna-Walker Jun 2020

Missing Piece Of The Puzzle: Creating A General Meaning Of Sex Measure, Veronica R. Hanna-Walker

Theses and Dissertations

The presence of and/or search for meaning has divergent and salient outcomes for individuals’ physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Although numerous domains of meaning have been examined, the literature on the meaning of sex is sparse and lacks a quantitative measure. In this study, I aimed to validate a general Meaning of Sex (MOS) Measure that captured the presence of (MOS-P) and search for (MOS-S) the meaning of sex that predicted salient relational and sexual outcomes (i.e., relationship stability and satisfaction and sexual satisfaction). The MOS measure was based off of the Meaning in Life Questionnaire (MLQ) created by Steger …

Do Shape And Volume Of Subcortical Neural Structures Involved In Reward Processing Correlate With Body Mass And Food Reward In Adolescent Females?, Kelsey K. Zaugg

Theses and Dissertations

Background: The prevalence of adolescent obesity has increased drastically in the last few decades, spurring research examining causes and consequences of this chronic health condition. Neuroimaging techniques are being used to determine possible neural correlates of obesity that could help inform research in this field. However, the research among adolescents is not as abundant and findings so far are contradictory. This study sought to examine the association of the shape and volume of subcortical brain structures involved in reward processing with weight status in adolescent females. Additionally, this study sought to determine if the shape and volume of these structures …

An Analysis Of Police Shootings In Dallas, Texas, 2003-2018, Steven Mccain Jun 2020

An Analysis Of Police Shootings In Dallas, Texas, 2003-2018, Steven Mccain

Theses and Dissertations

Legal establishments authorize police discretion of deadly force if they believe the threat to life or great bodily harm outweighs to threat presented by a criminal. Policing has been reactive when modern weapons of the times are used for criminal purposes. The adaptation process by police has made firearms necessary tools for conflict resolution. The Supreme Court also plays a role in determining what is reasonable use of deadly force, as these situations are rare with little precedent that require judicial review. Research on deadly force examines micro-level characteristics to better understand these situations. This study contributes to existing literature …

The Impact Of Colorblind Racial Attitudes And Implicit Bias In Evaluations Of Student Behavior, Khyati Verma Jun 2020

The Impact Of Colorblind Racial Attitudes And Implicit Bias In Evaluations Of Student Behavior, Khyati Verma

Theses and Dissertations

Racism is a deep-rooted, systemically prevalent structure of social divide evident in various aspects of the American society, including schools. Previous researches have focused on racism occurring in classrooms, its effects on teacher behavior, as well as negative outcomes for students of color. However discriminatory and prejudiced behaviors towards students of color have become more implicit due to shift in the course of racist attitudes to what is now known as modern racism. The current study focused on the effects of race, colorblind racial attitudes, and implicit racial bias on problem behavior and punishment severity ratings. Data collected online from …

Adolescent Depressive Symptomology: Do Siblings Hurt Or Help?, Jared D. Thorpe Jun 2020

Adolescent Depressive Symptomology: Do Siblings Hurt Or Help?, Jared D. Thorpe

Theses and Dissertations

Adolescents in the United States are currently experiencing a mental health crisis. While evidence shows that parents play an important role in shaping the mental health of youth, little has been done to understand how siblings may contribute to the psychological well-being of adolescents. I examine this association through the lenses of social capital and resource dilution perspectives. Social capital theory suggests that siblings may act as an additional source of resources, such as social support, which promote positive mental health. In contrast, resource dilution theory posits that the presence of siblings decreases the availability of parental resource in a …

Therapist Effects On Dropout In Couple Therapy, Kwin L. Willis Jun 2020

Therapist Effects On Dropout In Couple Therapy, Kwin L. Willis

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the strong efficacy of couple therapy, many couples still do not benefit from treatment. Marriage and family therapy scholars have argued that therapists play a crucial role in the delivery of successful couple therapy, yet little research has documented that the therapist in couple therapy has a significant impact on outcomes. Known as the study of therapist effects, this study sought to assess the amount of variance attributed to the therapist in couple therapy outcomes. Using dropout as the outcome variable, this study analyzed data from 1192 couples treated by 90 therapists at a university-based training clinic. Results from …

Dyslexia Beyond The Word: An Ecological Study Of Specific Reading Disorder, Benjamin T. Carter Jun 2020

Dyslexia Beyond The Word: An Ecological Study Of Specific Reading Disorder, Benjamin T. Carter

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation discusses the effects of dyslexia on reading behavior and cognition. It does so by first outlining the overall incidence of dyslexia, providing current definitions, giving a history of scientific inquiry and discussing relevant contemporary research. Thirteen different analyses are then discussed (ten a priori and three post-hoc). Individuals with dyslexia were found to have increased fixation duration, first run dwell time, total dwell time, and refixation probability. The dyslexia group was also highly sensitive to lexical predictability. Within the reading network, the BOLD response was depressed in dyslexia during reading in the following regions: the left medial and …

"In The Ruins Of The Everyday": Cairo And Its Abandoned Children In Street Situations, Maryam Hisham Fouad

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis aims at understanding Cairo’s production and reproduction through the eyes of the street children, who are the abandoned communities living in street situations. The street children are the main storytellers of Cairo as a city. The research moves away from seeing them as a burden on society or as mere subjects of poverty alleviation and development programs and rethinks their contribution to the city, its labor, and to understandings of the body, life, and death. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork over a seven months period, in Syada Zaynab, Abu El reesh, Dokki, Maadi, Heliopolis, and downtown neighbourhoods, the research …

Moocs: A New Paradigm In Teacher Professional Development, Basant Moustafa Hegazy

Theses and Dissertations

Quality teaching is considered the most significant in-school factor that affects students’ learning and achievement (Darling-Hammond, 2000; Donaldson, 2011; Hattie, 2008). Therefore, providing teachers, as lifelong adult learners, with many opportunities to update their professional knowledge and enhance their skills in continuous professional development (CPD) programs has gained increasing importance in the educational policy field. This qualitative multiple case study aims at providing an in-depth exploration of the experience of seven purposefully selected middle and high school STEM teachers who utilized a five-week instructor-facilitated MOOC about assessment for learning as an optional model of CPD. The teachers’ online participation was …

Public Punitiveness: The Intersection Of Racial Attitudes And Empathy, Arsala Aneeq Khan May 2020

Public Punitiveness: The Intersection Of Racial Attitudes And Empathy, Arsala Aneeq Khan

Theses and Dissertations

Public punitiveness has grown in recent decades and two components that help explain this rise are negative racial attitudes and empathy. For this thesis, a survey was passed out to 66 undergraduate criminal justice students at a mid-sized southern university. In order to better understand respondent relationship to punitiveness, a factor analysis was conducted that divided punitiveness into three scales. These scales were subsequently measured using three OLS regression analyses testing punitiveness with negative racial attitudes, empathy and control variables. The results showed no significant relationships between negative racial attitudes, empathy, and punitiveness. However, control variables such as age and …

A Religious Space As A Place For Migrants In Cairo, Alexsa Macdowall May 2020

A Religious Space As A Place For Migrants In Cairo, Alexsa Macdowall

Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this study is an international, English speaking Anglican congregation that worships in Cairo, Egypt. Through participant observation and in-depth interviews, fifteen congregants of varying nationalities and backgrounds were interviewed in order to understand how the church is a place of meaning for them, as migrants. By this congregation being the focus of study, this thesis contributes to migration research by being a non-ethnic pathway of study, religion, and it contributes to research conducted in the Global South. Findings and observations are understood primarily through the theoretical framework of space and place provided by Yi-Fu Tuan. Place making …

Notes On Relations, Anna Kristina Schmidt May 2020

Notes On Relations, Anna Kristina Schmidt

Theses and Dissertations

In 2018, I made the first two out of one hundred paintings, all showing myself in an interior space. The impulse for the paintings was to propose a visual situation, and to observe how it would feel to see myself in it, like making an inventory as the first step of finding a new way. The figures (self-portraits) are simplified to an almost cartoonish nature, the emblematized emotions range from neutral to curious to annoyed; all find their origins in the chart of emoticons on my iPhone.

Theses and Dissertations

The current study investigated identity development among adolescent and young adult cancer survivors. We examined the relationship between identity development with body image, self-esteem and self-perception. Results suggest that AYA survivors’ sense of self (how they perceive themselves, and how much they like themselves) is associated with their identity status.

Human Social Services In Central Illinois: Making Sense Of State Divestment And The State Budget Impasse, Erik William Zdansky May 2020

Human Social Services In Central Illinois: Making Sense Of State Divestment And The State Budget Impasse, Erik William Zdansky

Theses and Dissertations

The state of Illinois underwent an historic budget impasse that lasted 793 days from July 1, 2015 to August 31, 2017. By not signing the budget, the former Governor Bruce Rauner used a form of shock therapy at the state level to implement his reform agenda. The human social service sector was particularly hit hard. I wanted to investigate how an ecology of homeless service agencies in the central Illinois area strategized and prioritized their decision-making in response to an active crisis. During semi-structured interviews of agency executives and program managers, more was revealed about how they responded to state …

Does Having A Baby Affect Tenants’ Renting Opportunities? Experimental Evidence From Nyc, Christina Katopodis May 2020

Does Having A Baby Affect Tenants’ Renting Opportunities? Experimental Evidence From Nyc, Christina Katopodis

Theses and Dissertations

Access to reliable and stable housing is critical for the general population in urban areas and large cities. This paper tests for differential treatment in the rental housing market using an experiment conducted via e-mail for rental units advertised on-line. There are two emails with the same content, except for one shows the family status as childless and the other shows the family status as having an 18-month-old child. These emails were then sent to the landlords with an equal distribution. Apart from family status, there is no mention of socioeconomic status or any other identifying factors of the tenant. …

Against The Classes And The Masses: The American Legion, The American Federation Of Labor, And Square Deal Americanism In The 1920s, Gregory Steven Hopely May 2020

Against The Classes And The Masses: The American Legion, The American Federation Of Labor, And Square Deal Americanism In The 1920s, Gregory Steven Hopely

Theses and Dissertations

This work explores the ideological contributions of the American Legion and the American Federation of Labor to American conservatism in the 1920s. It argues that the two organizations shared a vision of what the author calls Square Deal Americanism, a loose conception of ideal citizenship that added a nationalist rejection of class to more traditional nativist Americanism. The conservatism of both groups took inspiration from the legacies of the Progressive Era and World War I. They sought an active role for the federal government and engaged citizenry in eliminating any strain of radicalism, fostering patriotism, and securing a square deal …

Temporal Discounting And Sustainable Behaviors, Natalia Piskorski May 2020

Temporal Discounting And Sustainable Behaviors, Natalia Piskorski

Theses and Dissertations

An experimental study was conducted (N = 175) to test for differences between thinking about the future and the present when it came to sustainable behavior and attitudes. Previous studies show temporal discounting can be overcome at least in the short term to alter current behaviors; however, there is a gap in the literature in regards to sustainable behaviors. This study used similar techniques to determine whether environmentally protective behavior can be altered by having an individual imagine themselves in the future. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups, a current other, current self, or a future-self group. …

Little Rock Urban Renewal Project Ark-4: The Demise Of West Rock, Arkansas, 1884 – 1960, Nancy Tell-Hall

Theses and Dissertations

Little Rock, Arkansas, known internationally for the Central High integration crisis of 1957, once had a vibrant African-American community known as West Rock. This thesis will reveal how Little Rock Urban Renewal PROJECT ARK-4, buttressed by complex and systematically restrictive federal, state, and city laws, and under the umbrella of slum removal, removed the population of West Rock for financial reasons. It will also establish the carefully planned demise of West Rock is an important part in the study of Little Rock’s economic growth and its ethnic history and, therefore, should be placed into Arkansas’ historical record.

The Relationship Between Work-Life Balance Programs And Employee Success, Efrain Medina May 2020

The Relationship Between Work-Life Balance Programs And Employee Success, Efrain Medina

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to investigate the importance of work-life balance (WLB) programs to employees. Despite several attempts to understand the relationship between WLB programs and employee outcomes, it has been suggested that there should be a more complex understanding of how WLB programs enhance employee outcomes. This study aims to provide empirical evidence of the relationship between the availability of WLB programs and six workplace outcomes: job performance, turnover intention, deviant workplace behavior, affective commitment, fatigue level, and perceived organizational support. Secondly, the study examines whether perceived organizational support mediates the relationship between WLB programs availability and …

Female Labor Force Participation And Economic Growth: Granger Causality Test, Zulakha Rahman May 2020

Female Labor Force Participation And Economic Growth: Granger Causality Test, Zulakha Rahman

Theses and Dissertations

Does rising female labor force participation precede economic growth, or does the relationship run in the other direction? This paper addresses this question by performing a Granger causality test to examine the relationship between economic growth and female labor force participation worldwide. The economic growth –is measured in two ways: using Growth Domestic Product, Purchasing Power Parity (constant 2011 international dollar) and Growth Domestic Product using local currency units. The test uses a completely balanced panel dataset spanning over 28 years from 1990 to 2018 and using 151 countries for Purchasing Power Parity dataset and 154 countries in GDP in …

Connecting To History Through Service-Learning: A Qualitative Case Study Investigating Student Engagement In Core History Courses, Kimberly D. Stokes May 2020

Connecting To History Through Service-Learning: A Qualitative Case Study Investigating Student Engagement In Core History Courses, Kimberly D. Stokes

Theses and Dissertations

Surveys have shown that students are not enthusiastic about taking history in college; some describe the discipline as boring and unnecessary. College is a setting where students are investing in themselves, exploring new knowledge to build a career, and gaining insight into the person they want to become in the future. Learning history through a traditional lecture method where memorization of names, dates, and events seems to be the norm is not appealing to students. Universities, promoting the thought that a well-rounded education is beneficial, commonly add history to the collection of general education core courses that are required for …

Evaluating Seed Blended Refugia In Field Corn In The Southern U. S., Tyler Breck Towles May 2020

Evaluating Seed Blended Refugia In Field Corn In The Southern U. S., Tyler Breck Towles

Theses and Dissertations

Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), a pest of cotton that also occurs in field corn, is commonly controlled through the use of foliar-applied insecticides or transgenic crops expressing Bt genes. To prevent the selection of resistant populations, refuge systems have been implemented into the agroecosystem. Historically, structured refuge compliance among growers has been low, leading to the commercialization of seed blended refugia. To test the viability of seed blended refugia in the southern U.S., field studies were conducted in Mississippi and Georgia during the 2016, 2017, and 2018 growing seasons. To quantify adult H. zea emergence from structured and seed blended refuge …

Gender Dynamics In Charreria Mexicana, Karen Melissa Flores Tavizon May 2020

Gender Dynamics In Charreria Mexicana, Karen Melissa Flores Tavizon

Theses and Dissertations

This research and analysis about the experiences of women in charrería show the pervasive negotiation of needs that they engage as practicing in an Escaramuza Charra. Inside this study, it is introduced the term Sisterhood Paradox, used to describe the struggle that represents the Escaramuza’s constant collective performance, in comparison to charros, but that paradoxically serves a tool of resistance of charra women inside this patriarchal institution. In this piece of work, it is also argued that women in charrería, in many cases, are not aware of the subordinate position they occupy and in an unconscious way function as agents …
