Female Medical Residents And Stress: Origins, Impacts, And Coping Responses, Brenda Mcgehee Smith Jan 1998

Female Medical Residents And Stress: Origins, Impacts, And Coping Responses, Brenda Mcgehee Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Stress research studies of medical residents in the 1970s and 1980s found that female residents cope less well than male residents. Coping strategies, as well as origins and impact of stress, of 12 female residents were examined in the contexts of their environment. This qualitative ethnographic study was organized around the transactional cognitive theory of stress and coping. Female residents coped well, with use of a variety of strong support relationships, and were creative and flexible in combining their personal and professional lives. The quality of interpersonal communication and support, rather than the existence, appeared to have the greatest effect …

The Relationship Between Employers' Perceived Organizational Context And Their Impressions Of The Employability Of Job Applicants With Either A Severe Psychiatric Or Physical Disability, John Constantine Bricout

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the relationship between favorable employability ratings of hypothetical job applicants with a severe disability and two aspects of employers' perceived organizational context: organizational climate and negotiation latitude, using a cross-sectional, correlational design. A survey including a hypothetical job applicant vignette in one of three conditions: non-disabled, severe physical disability (acquired brain injury), severe psychiatric disability (schizophrenia) was mailed out to a random sample of 1,000 employers selected from a national human resource membership list. Responses were received from 248 employers. The chief purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between employers' perceived organizational context and …

Factors Affecting Social Workers' Political Participation: Resources, Professional Associations And Perceived Efficacy, David Henry Hamilton Jan 1998

Factors Affecting Social Workers' Political Participation: Resources, Professional Associations And Perceived Efficacy, David Henry Hamilton

Theses and Dissertations

Research has indicated that social workers are more politically active than the general public (Wolk, 1981; Parker and Sherraden, 1991), but their effectiveness has been questioned (Mathews, 1982). There are differences among social workers, but explanations of differences between "very active" and "inactive" have relied primarily on practice setting or method. However, research in political science has shown that income, education, involvement in associations, and perceived political efficacy, are significant predictors of who does not participate (Verba, Schlozman, and Brady, 1995).

Five hundred certified social workers were surveyed regarding how often they engaged in political activities (e.g., voting and campaigning) …

A Qualitative Study Of A College Visual Arts Course: A Multicultural Perspective, Jacqueline A. Badman May 1997

A Qualitative Study Of A College Visual Arts Course: A Multicultural Perspective, Jacqueline A. Badman

Theses and Dissertations

The United States is a multicultural place. With its ever increasing cultural and ethnic diversity, multicultural education is important. Since the visual arts have always been produced and perceived within cultures and offer students unique opportunities to explore human expression and experience, the analysis of an introductory art course taught within a multicultural context at a Midwestern university was a sensible starting point. This was especially timely since little research exists in relation to the visual arts taught from a multicultural perspective at the higher education level, and more theoretical works regarding multicultural visual arts exist than do actual studies. …

Practice And Fit In The Allocation Of The Resource Of Faculty Time: A Study Of Current And Preferred Scholarly Practice Of The Faculties Of Ten Theological Schools Affiliated With The Presbyterian Church (Usa), Roger Allen Nicholson

Theses and Dissertations

Faculties, deans, and trustees of theological schools affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA) were surveyed to determine current faculty practice; the practice preferred by faculty, deans. and trustees; the fit between current and preferred practice; and faculty practice and faculty preference difference according to categorical variables such as gender, race, and rank.

Seven variables defined faculty practice: workweek in hours, instruction, scholarship, service, advising, governance, and other. Scholarship was subdivided into three categories adapting Ernest Boyer’s multi-dimensional definition of scholarship: orginitive, applied, and teaching. Fit was defined in two ways: statistical fit and practical fit.

The reported workweek was comparable …

Contemporary Couple Enrichment: A Critical And Meta-Analytic Review Of Methodology, Terry L. Hight Jan 1997

Contemporary Couple Enrichment: A Critical And Meta-Analytic Review Of Methodology, Terry L. Hight

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of contemporary couple enrichment using currently-accepted standards of meta-analytic research. Twenty-seven published studies that compared enrichment groups to control groups were included in the analyses. The overall mean effect size (0.32), post-treatment effect size (0.35), and follow-up effect size (0.35) for couple enrichment were heterogeneous, positive, and significantly different than 0. Mean effect sizes for both post-treatment and follow-up did not differ significantly, Moderator variables associated with program type, measure type, nature of dependent variable, quality of methodology, measure reactivity, measure specificity, and researcher allegiance significantly improved homogeneity across effect …

Teachers' Attitudes Toward The Inclusion Of Young Children With Special Needs Into Regular Early Childhood Classes, Marilyn I. Forbes Sep 1996

Teachers' Attitudes Toward The Inclusion Of Young Children With Special Needs Into Regular Early Childhood Classes, Marilyn I. Forbes

Theses and Dissertations

All children have special abilities and special needs that make them unique individuals. Most teachers work with children who have a wide range of abilities and learning styles. Early childhood teachers are no exception. They may have children enrolled in their classrooms who have subtle learning disabilities, significant physical, mental or emotional problems, high intelligence, or conditions which limit speech and motor development. Teachers may not have been taught that the continuum of development is similar for all children, but that timetables may vary. This thesis examines staff attitudes toward the placement of young children with special needs into regular …

Survivors Of Childhood Incest: A Qualitative Study, Dawn M. Johnson Aug 1996

Survivors Of Childhood Incest: A Qualitative Study, Dawn M. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Current research indicates that there is a lack of empirical evidence pertaining to the long-term effects of incest and the role treatment plays on healing the effects and enhancing the survivors' lives. The purposes of this study were to further develop grounded theory in relationship to the lives of the survivors of incest and to close some of the existing gaps in the current data.

In this study, an attempt was made to develop a comprehensive understanding of the subjects' lives before, during, and after the incest occurred. In addition, the quality of the subjects' lives today, the survivors' perception …

Personality Traits And Dimensions Of Spirituality: A Study Of Midlife Males., John Lindquist Jul 1996

Personality Traits And Dimensions Of Spirituality: A Study Of Midlife Males., John Lindquist

Theses and Dissertations

Although there has been a resurgence of interest in the psychological study of religiosity and dimensions of spirituality, few studies have explored the relationship between measured personality traits of normal adults, aspects of spirituality and religious practice. This study is intended to further such an exploration.A sample of 181 upper middle class male volunteers aged 35-55 participated in the study. Participants completed the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), the Spiritual Orientation Inventory (SOI), the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (SDS), and a Demographics and Religiosity Profile (DRP). The basic design was that of a correlational study, with denominational membership as the grouping …
