Theses and Dissertations
Seedlings of Indian rice grass Oryzopsis hvmenoides (Roem. & Shult.) Ricker. were studied to determine the effect of soil moisture, photoperiod, depth of burial of germinated grains, temperature, and the rate of soil accumulation on seedling growth and tillering. The study was performed in two phases: Field observations and laboratory studies. Field observations were made on a system of sand dunes located northwest of Lynndyl, Utah. General observations were made from January, 1966 to May, 1968.
The Effect Of Thiamine And Its Antagonists On Plasma And Tissue Lactic Dehydrogenase In Rats, Dong Hwa Park
The Effect Of Thiamine And Its Antagonists On Plasma And Tissue Lactic Dehydrogenase In Rats, Dong Hwa Park
Theses and Dissertations
The lactic dehydrogenase activity in plasma and tissues was measured in the thiamine-deprived, the oxythiamine-treated and the pyrithiamine-treated rats as well as the control rats. The lactic dehydrogenase levels of brain and kidney were significantly increased by oxythiamine treatment. The enzyme activity in heart was markedly decreased only in the thiamine-deprived rats. Unlike the above tissues, the enzyme levels in liver were decreased by 29-44 per cent in all three types of thiamine deficiency, However, the enzyme activity in plasma was significantly increased only by pyrithiamine administration. The distribution patterns of lactic dehydrogenase isozymes were electrophoretically examined in these deficiencies. …

Studies On The Levels Of Acetylcholine In The Brains Of Thiamine-Deprived And Thiamine-Antagonized Rats, Darwin Leroy Cheney
Theses and Dissertations
Thiamine deficiency has been reported to cause nerve degeneration in the peripheral nervous system and hemorrhage with associated cellular damage in the central nervous system (Prickett, 1934). Koedam (1958) observed convulsions in thiamine-deficient pigeons, but convulsions have only rarely been seen in rats (Gubler, 1961). Rats treated with the thiamine antagonist, pyrithiamine (PTh)* always develop ataxia and convulsions but these neurological symptoms have never been reported in those treated with oxythiamine (OTh), another thiamine antagonist (Gubler, 1961). Hosein, Chabrol, and Freedman (1966) concluded that neurological symptoms occur only when the brain thiamine content is diminished to 2.5%o r less of …

The discovery of a substance in rice polishings that was useful in preventing beriberi was first shown by Grijns and Vedder (Wuest, 1962). In 1926, Jansen and Donath (Wuest, 1962} crystallized this substance which was subsequently synthesized independently by Williams and Cline (1936} and Grewe (1936). This substance was named thiamine by Williams (1936) because of its structure having the vital thiazole ring and because it was an "essential amine."

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Weight Control And Reduction Of High School Wrestlers On Selected Measurements Of Strength, John R. Oxton
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the changes, if any, of selected strength factors of typical North Dakota high school wrestlers, as these might be affected by programs of weight reduction or weight control.
Right grip, left grip, push, pull, leg and back strength data of the subjects were recorded using a dynamometer. The subjects were tested five times during and after the season.
Inter-group and intra-group comparisons of results were made between the control group consisting of seven high school wrestlers and the experimental group of seven high school wrestlers who experienced a weight loss of more …
The Development Of Basement Membranes Associated With Vascular Invasion Of The Brain In The Chick Embryo, Richard G. Peterson
The Development Of Basement Membranes Associated With Vascular Invasion Of The Brain In The Chick Embryo, Richard G. Peterson
Theses and Dissertations
Since a basement membrane is present on all blood vessels and also on all tissues of ectodermal origin, the blood vessels of the central nervous system should have two basement membranes, one related to the blood vessel, the other related to the nervous tissue. Also, the tissue space usually bordering on the basement membranes should in the central nervous system separate the two. In the adult brain and spinal cord, however, only one basement membrane and no tissue space surround the blood vessels of the central nervous system. This study, therefore, has been concerned with the embryonic development of blood …

Metazoan Parasites Of The Muskrat, Ondatra Zibethica Cinnamominus, From The English Coulee Grand Forks County, North Dakota, David A. Boyd Iv
Theses and Dissertations
During the fall of 1966 and the spring of 1967, 55 muskrats were trapped along the reaches of the English Coulee, Grand Forks County, North Dakota. These muskrats were necropsied and all ectoparasites and endoparasites collected. The parasites were stained and identified and the number of worms counted to discern the parasite burden.
Eight species of parasites were found. The only ectoparasite encountered was Laelaps multispinosus (89.09 per cent incidence). Four species of trematodes were identified as Echinostoma revolutum (34.54 per cent), Quinqueserialis quinqueserialis (47.27 per cent), Notocotylus urbanensis (41.81 per cent), and Plagiorchis proximus (14.54 per cent). Two species …
Hematological Variation Associated With Altitude, Season, Sexual Activity And Body In The Uinta Ground Squirrel, Ralph Theodore Kinchloe
Hematological Variation Associated With Altitude, Season, Sexual Activity And Body In The Uinta Ground Squirrel, Ralph Theodore Kinchloe
Theses and Dissertations
Hematological comparisons were made on the Uinta ground squirrel (Citellus armatus) trapped at different altitudes and during vari ou s stages of seasonal activity in 1965 and 1966. Hematological variation due to sex, sexual activity and body weight were also analyzed. Ground squirrels were secured from the Mt. Timpanogos area near Provo, Utah County, Utah. Erythrocyte count, hematocrit, total blood hemoglobin, mean erythrocyte volume, mean erythrocyte hemoglobin and reticulocyte counts were measured using standard procedures; banding patterns of hemoglobin and serum proteins wer e determined by means of electrophoresis with polyacetate strips.

The Effect Of A Second Stress On Growth Of Tetrahymena Pyriformis, Janice M. Granum
Theses and Dissertations
This research was undertaken to determine the effect on growth of Tetrahymena pyriformis of a single stress followed at some later time by a second stress, using temperature change and osmotic pressure change as stress factors.
Growth rate of T. pyriformis was determined under standard conditions of temperature and osmotic pressure (29°C and 100 milliosmols). A single stress consisting of a decrease in temperature to 20°C or an increase in osmotic pressure to 300 milliosmols was applied to an exponentially growing culture and its effect noted. After a recovery period a second, different stress was applied to the culture J …

The Morphology Of Blood Vessels Traversing The Subarachnoid Space, William C. Rosen
The Morphology Of Blood Vessels Traversing The Subarachnoid Space, William C. Rosen
Theses and Dissertations
Blood vessels traversing the subarachnoid space possess morphological characteristics reflecting specialized function and environment. The spaces associated with these vessels are of special Interest. Until recently, however, clear descriptions of these vessels and the spaces associated with them were limited by Inadequate fixation. This study describes the normal morphology of blood vessels in the subarachnoid space and their associated spaces in tissues known to be fixed adequately for fine structure.
Thirty-eight young adult female rats were perfused with buffered aldehydes. Selected tissues were prepared for light microscopy with the least possible modification of standard procedures. Using common staining techniques, the …

The Role Of Thiamine Pyrophosphate In Regulating The Level Of Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid In The Central Nervous System, Bryant L. Adams
Theses and Dissertations
The level of gamma-aminobutyric acid in the brains of white rats suffering from thiamine deficiency symptoms resulting from pyrithiamine or oxythiamine antagonism of thiamine or from thiamine deprivation was measured. The level of this amino acid was 17.5% lower in the brains of pyrithiamine-treated rats and 20.0% lower in the brains of thiamine-deprived rats than in the control rats. Daily injections of ten times the required amounts of vitamin B6 in rats treated with pyrithiamine or oxythiamine or by thiamine deprivation had no effect on the level of brain gamma-aminobutyric acid or on the psiological behavior of these rats. The …
