Women As Political Persuader: A Study Of Ella T. Grasso's Campaign For Governor, Ardyce Carlson Whalen

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to examine the persuasive strategies within the campaign rhetoric of Ella Grasso who won the governorship of Connecticut in 1974. In the analysis of the persuasion, a study of her political campaign within the context of a small industrial state is included. As an aid to understanding, the study briefly reviewed the concerns of Connecticut, introduced members of both parties who were interested in the governorship, and showed how Ella Grasso got the nomination and party support.

The campaign rhetoric centered around the issues of taxation for revenue, the utility companies' billing practices, energy, …

The Effects Of Certain Steroids On The Growth Of Slime Mold, Physarum Polycephalum, Ching-Bun Paul Chen Aug 1975

The Effects Of Certain Steroids On The Growth Of Slime Mold, Physarum Polycephalum, Ching-Bun Paul Chen

Theses and Dissertations

The cortex of vertebrate adrenal glands secretes two major groups of hormones--glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. Glucocorticoids, which have an oxygen atom at carbon number 11, increase the rate of gluconeogenesis and increase the mobilization of lipids in mammals (Turner and Bagnara 1971). At the same time there is a decrease in protein synthesis. This latter effect may be homologous to a decrease in fibroblast growth in culture in the presence of certain corticosteroids (Ruhmann and Berliner 1965). The main function of mineralocorticoids, on the other hand, is to retain sodium ions. They have little or no gluconeogenic activity. Interestingly, however, these …

Ultrastructural Investigations Of The Host-Parasite Interface Of Pumpkin Cotyledons And The Fungus Sclerotinia Sclerotiorum, Mark Edward Richtsteig Aug 1975

Ultrastructural Investigations Of The Host-Parasite Interface Of Pumpkin Cotyledons And The Fungus Sclerotinia Sclerotiorum, Mark Edward Richtsteig

Theses and Dissertations

Pumkin seedlings (Cucurbita maxima) were inoculated with the fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary. Center regions of non-infected and infected cotyledons of various lengths were cut into 1 x 2 mm strips and processed for ultrastructural investigations. Complementary portions of opposing non-infected cotyledons were also processed as control tissue, and contained fewer storage products in cells than cotyledons of comparable size from non-infected plants. Young non-infected cells contained distinct lipid bodies, protein bodies and electron dense inlusions which were translocated out of older cells by abundant plasmodesmata. Initally, infected cells became plasmolyzed, followed by breakdown of the cytoplasm. Host cells …

The Effect Of Lead And Zinc On Selenium Poisoning In Mice, Cynthia Joy Call Aug 1975

The Effect Of Lead And Zinc On Selenium Poisoning In Mice, Cynthia Joy Call

Theses and Dissertations

Trace elements, because they are effective in catalytic amounts, must be held in delicate balance with each other as well as with the macronutrients of the diet. Disturbances of these balances result in deficiency and toxicity symptoms. Toxic doses of selenium, lead, and zinc, for example, are known to cause anemia (1, 2, 3, 4) and growth depression (5, 3) in experimental animals.

A Comparative Investigation Of Mammalian Serine Transhydroxymethylases, Sanha Panichajakul Apr 1975

A Comparative Investigation Of Mammalian Serine Transhydroxymethylases, Sanha Panichajakul

Theses and Dissertations

Serine transhydroxymethylase was purified one thousand-fold from bovine brain and one hundred and twenty-fold from bovine liver. Both enzymes were yellow due to the presence of the coenzyme pyridoxal 5'-phosphate. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the liver enzyme showed one major band containing 95% of the protein, while in the case of the brain enzyme two major bands of nearly equal intensity were observable. The specific activity of the crude liver enzyme was about sixty times higher than that of brain. The liver enzyme was also more heat stable than the brain enzyme. The purified enzymes exhibited L-allothreonine and L-threonine aldolase …

A Comparative Study Of Some Population Characteristics Of Calyptraea Fastigiata Gould, Crepidula Lingulata Gould, And Crepidula Nummaria Gould (Gastropoda, Prosobranchia), Roger Harold Goodwill

Theses and Dissertations

A comparative study of the field populations of Crepidula lingulata, Crepidula nurnmaria, and Calyptraea fastigiata indicated all three preferred a rocky substrate but favored different size rocks. Their positions on the rocks varied but the greatest numbers were found attached to the undersides. Crepidula lingulata and C. nummaria preferred larger rocks and were found in intraspecific associations more often than C. fastigiata which preferred smaller rocks. These associations occurred with a 1:1 sex ratio; however, the overall population did not. Crepidula lingulata had a high female count and C. fastigiata a high male count. Males, of all three species, were …

An Assay Chamber For Quantitative Analysis Of Nitrogen Fixation Using Intact Plants, Thomas Adrie Leslie Apr 1975

An Assay Chamber For Quantitative Analysis Of Nitrogen Fixation Using Intact Plants, Thomas Adrie Leslie

Theses and Dissertations

A unique assay system for quantitative analysis of biological nitrogen fixation by intact plants has been constructed and successfully tested. With the system, it has been possible to detect acetylene reduction by intact legumes in situ under laboratory conditions. This assay method is designed to approximate field conditions and in spite of possible procedural errors in sampling, background noise of the gas chromatograph and ethylene contamination of the acetylene gas used in the assay, this method is sensitive ·enough to detect as little as 1 ppm enrichment of ethylene gas as a result of acetylene reduction by intact soybean plants. …

The Morphologic Changes In The Muscles Of Mastication Due To Direct Intramuscular Injection Of Lidocaine, Carbocaine, Procaine And Citanest, Kurt Elliot Friedman

Theses and Dissertations

One of the most commonly experienced symptoms in dentistry and one that is of major concern to the dentist is pain. Since pain is manifested when an environmental change occurs causing injury to responsive tissues, it is often spoken of as a protective mechanism.

Pain has been described by a variety of terms: sharp, burning, aching, cramping, dull and throbbing! (Monheim, 1969). Therefore, it is a difficult term to define. Monheim (1969) describes pain as an unpleasant sensation created by a noxious stimulus that is mediated along specific nerve pathways into the central nervous system, where it is interpreted as …

Distribution And Effects Of Bacterial Endotoxin, Anne Carter Adams Jan 1975

Distribution And Effects Of Bacterial Endotoxin, Anne Carter Adams

Theses and Dissertations

In this study the distribution and effects of bacterial endotoxin were examined. Adult male BALB/c and adult male DUB/ICR mice were used in all experiments. Endotoxic activity of a number of strains from three genera of bacteria, Pseudomonas, Bacteroides, and Listeria, was detected using vincristine-treated mice as sensitized indicators for endotoxin and resistance to purified endotoxin induced by pretreatment with selected bacteria. Also, the effect of bacterial endotoxin and endotoxin-like substances on the course of primary amebic meningoencephalitis in mice, caused by Naegleria fowleri, was assessed.

Personality Dimensions Of Drinking Patterns In Hospitalized Male Alcoholics, Donald J. Mccullagh Dec 1974

Personality Dimensions Of Drinking Patterns In Hospitalized Male Alcoholics, Donald J. Mccullagh

Theses and Dissertations

Research concerning alcoholism and personality has often been based upon the single syndrome concept of alcoholism. At the theoretical level it has been recognized that different personality patterns exist among alcoholics. However, few researchers have addressed themselves to this area. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a relationship existed between alcoholic drinking patterns and alcoholism severity based on the responses to the Alcohol Use Questionnaire and personality traits as measured by Cattell's Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire.

The sample consisted of 101 white males admitted to a midwestern alcoholism treatment center during a three month period in 1974. …

Behavioral Effects Of Postnatal Zinc Deficiency And Kryptopyrrole In The Rat, Peter C. Peterson Dec 1974

Behavioral Effects Of Postnatal Zinc Deficiency And Kryptopyrrole In The Rat, Peter C. Peterson

Theses and Dissertations

Zinc deficiency has been shown to have a wide range of behavioral effects in the rat. The experiments presented below were conducted to determine the effects of postnatal zinc deficiency (birth-21 days) on avoidance learning and on measures of emotionality. Kryptopyrrole, a substance which has been shown to produce "catatonic" freezing behavior and atypical electrical activity in rat brains, was administered to half of the Ss to study possible zinc deficiency-kryptopyrrole interactions.

Dams were made zinc deficient from the day of delivery until day 21 on a diet contaning less than 1 ppm zinc. Two dietary control groups were used: …

Theses and Dissertations

Methylmalonyl CoA mutase has been purified over 2300-fold from bovine brain using fractional precipitation, ion exchange resins, and gel filtration procedures. The crude extract had an equal mixture of mutase in the halo- and apoenzyme form. After the final purification step the ratio had changed to 86% holo-enzyme and 14% apoenzyme. The mutase enzyme had a pH optimum of 7. 0 in Tris-HCI buffer. The Km values for L-methylmalonyl CoA and succinyl CoA were 7.7 x 10^-4 M and 1.8 x 10^-4 M respectively. The equiIibrium constant in the direction of succinyl CoA formation was 19. Inhibition with N-ethylmalei-mide was …

A Measurement Of Differences In Motor Fitness Performances According To Primary Grade Levels, William Lee Predovich Aug 1974

A Measurement Of Differences In Motor Fitness Performances According To Primary Grade Levels, William Lee Predovich

Theses and Dissertations

The research hypothesis states that children of primary grade school level (K-2), when tested in four areas of motor fitness (agility, speed in running, leg power and balance), will differ in performance scores according to grade; the upper grade will indicate the superior performance.

There were three main objectives of this research project. The first objective was to establish reliability on six motor fitness test items. These test items were: the sprint (measure of speed), the zig zag run (measure of agility), the standing broad jump (measure of leg power), the one legged stand (measure of static balance), and the …

The Effects Of Temperature On The Oocysts Of Isospora Canis, Ray Loveless Aug 1974

The Effects Of Temperature On The Oocysts Of Isospora Canis, Ray Loveless

Theses and Dissertations

Oocysts of Isospora canis, an important protozoan parasite of dogs, must sporulate in the external environment in order to become infective. To determine the tolerance of these oocysts to different temperatures, oocysts ware collected from freshly passed feces, cleaned, and subsequently stored in unsporulated, partially sporulated, and completely sporulated conditions at temperatures ranging from +50 C to -50 C. Observations on survival for each group were determined periodically thereafter at intervals up to 64 days. The rate of sporulation was followed at 6 hr intervals for temperatures of 20, 25, 30, and 38 C. Completely sporulated oocysts ware more resistant …

Effects Of Three Pre-Competition Meals Upon Subsequent Performance In A Two-Mile Run, Jeffrey D. Fair Aug 1974

Effects Of Three Pre-Competition Meals Upon Subsequent Performance In A Two-Mile Run, Jeffrey D. Fair

Theses and Dissertations

It has always been desired that the meal consumed prior to competition would enhance the athlete's performance. The problem is that no one knows how different pre-competition meals affect the performance of the athlete.

Sixty-eight Oklahoma State University football players ran a two-mile run after consuming one of four treatments-- steak and eggs, pancakes, oatmeal and eggs, and a control meal. Subjects were grouped by football position and blocked in fours based on a pre-test time. Subjects were assigned treatments randomly with each subject in each block having a different treatment. A questionnaire was filled out after testing by the …

Biochemical Parameters Of Hereditary Chondrodysplasia In Mice, Trent D. Stephens Aug 1974

Biochemical Parameters Of Hereditary Chondrodysplasia In Mice, Trent D. Stephens

Theses and Dissertations

Cartilage from newborn mice homozygous for chondrodysplasia contains normal quantities of protein and chondroitin sulfate. Mutant fetal cartilage incorporates normal amounts of sulfate, glucose, and glucosamine. Overnight rinsing with water removes about 25% of the incorporated sulfur and existing uronic acid from mutant ribs and about 55% from mutant limbs. Control ribs and limbs are affected very little by such a rinse. The diffusability of chondroitin sulfate (represented by incorporated sulfur and uronic acid) may be due to a lack of covalent bond formation between chondroitin sulfate and collagen.

High School Students Achievement Of College Level Work Through The Phase Achievement System (Pas), Dwight D. Lassen Aug 1974

High School Students Achievement Of College Level Work Through The Phase Achievement System (Pas), Dwight D. Lassen

Theses and Dissertations

Senior high school students in a Human Biology course were given college level work through the Phase Achievement System (PAS), a biology course at Brigham Young University (BYU). Statistical analysis showed significant growth in high school student learning through the PAS. When ability to work with PAS was measured, significant differences between the high school and college groups were not evident. A high percentage of college and high school students dropped out of the PAS, probably becasue students could fail at the PAS without experiencing academic failure.

Physiological And Behavioral Effects Of Zinc Deficiency In Rats, Michael Charles Rowe May 1974

Physiological And Behavioral Effects Of Zinc Deficiency In Rats, Michael Charles Rowe

Theses and Dissertations

The studies presented below concern the physiological and behavioral effects of zinc deficiency. One group of dams were fed a zinc- deficient diet from the morning of day 14 to the morning of day 19 of the pregnancy. A second group was given the same amount of food as was eaten by their zinc-deficient counterpart (pair-fed) plus water containing 50 ppm zinc, thus they were not zinc-deficient but did experience starvation. A third group was fed the diet ad libitum and given the zinc-supplemented water. Dams' food intake, weight gain, food efficiency and pups per litter were determined. Pups' birth …

Aspects Of Salt Tolerance Of Salicornia Pacifica Standl. Var. Utahensis (Tidestrom) Munz, Dennis J. Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

Aspects of salt tolerance of Salicornia pacifica were investigated. Survival of this plant in a saline environment is due to many interacting factors. A soil pH of 7.5 to 8.0 +- 0.2 and a constant sub-surface soil moisture level of 25 to 35% are necessary for plant survival. A fluctuating lower soil moisture leevel and higher pH favor etablishment of Distichlis stricta. The ion content in S. pacifica remained constant despite increased moisture stress throughout the growing season due to accumulation of salts which were significantly higher in the surface soil layers than in the subsurface layers around the roots. …
