The Histochemistry And Reaction To Particulate Matter Of The Reticuloendothelial System Of The Rabbit's Spleen, Michael Jens Snodgrass Aug 1966

The Histochemistry And Reaction To Particulate Matter Of The Reticuloendothelial System Of The Rabbit's Spleen, Michael Jens Snodgrass

Theses and Dissertations

Thirty-nine rabbits (Oryctoloous cuniculus) weighing 2.0 to 3.0 kilograms were used in this investigation. Spleen slides from 14 animals were processed to show (1) the presence of non-specific esterase according to the method of Pearce, (2) the presence of acid phosphatase by the method of Burstone, (3) the metalophil reaction according to the short method of marshall, (4) the histological features by routine hematoxylin and eosin staining, and (5) the presence of hemosiderin iron by the method of Gomori. Twenty-five animals were divided into 3 groups which received injection by posterior marginal ear vein, eleven animals received 10 cc per …

Light Microscopy Of Peripheral Nerve Adequately Fixed For Electron Microscopy, Leonard L. Gunderson Aug 1966

Light Microscopy Of Peripheral Nerve Adequately Fixed For Electron Microscopy, Leonard L. Gunderson

Theses and Dissertations

Electron microscopy has settled prior controversies regarding the relationship of axon, myelin and Schwann cell bat doubt remains about the correct interpretation of the classic binding sheaths. Perineurium is customarily interpreted to be flattened fibroblasts but recent evidence suggests attenuated Schwann cells. This study attempts to reinterpret the morphology of peripheral nerve known to be fixed adequately for fine structure. Special emphasis is placed on the binding sheaths, especially perineurium.

Forty white rats were perfused with buffered aldehydes. Sural and sciatic nerves were removed. Smaller nerves were obtained with orbital contents and the loose connective tissue of spleen and pancreas. …

Drag Coefficients For Magnetically Accelerated Spheres, Jann-Wuu Liang

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to determine the correlation of the drag coefficient of an accelerating sphere in the liquid medium over a range of Reynolds number from 0.1 to 100, 000. A magnetic accelerator was used to obtain an acceleration for the sphere, the data was recorded using a photograph and a digital computer was used to reduce the data.

The Controlled Oxidation Of Leonardite, Vijay R. Purandare Jun 1966

The Controlled Oxidation Of Leonardite, Vijay R. Purandare

Theses and Dissertations

The controlled oxidation or dissolved leonardite was carried out in a heated autoclave under elevated oxygen pressure. Oxidation was carried out in order to increase the acidity oi: leonardite and obtain higher humic acid yields. The solvent was an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide in the range of concentrations from 1% to 8%. The reaction temperature was varied from 25°C to 125°C; the pressure was kept at 500 psig and reaction time was constant at one hour. The product was analyzed both for carboxylic acid and for hydroxyl groups.

The Increase in carboxyl and hydroxyl groups was slight under the …

The Synthesis Of 4-Spiro-2-Aryloxazolines Of Potential Pharmacological Interest, Paul Waddell Collins Jan 1966

The Synthesis Of 4-Spiro-2-Aryloxazolines Of Potential Pharmacological Interest, Paul Waddell Collins

Theses and Dissertations

Numerous and diverse physiological actions are found among 2-oxazoline compounds. No reports of the synthesis or biological testing of 4-spiro-2-aryl-2-oxazolines were found in the literature. On the basis of the known pharmacological activities of certain aza- and diazaspirans, it was felt that 4-spiro-2-aryl-2-oxazolines should possess medicinal activity. In particular, it was reasoned that the combination in a bicyclic spiro structure of the 2-oxazoline ring with rings systems commonly found in synthetic antitussive compounds might result in active antitussive agents.

The aim of this research was the synthesis of a series· of 2-aryl-2-oxazoline-4-spirocyclopentanes and a series of 1'-methyl-2-aryl-2-oxazoline-4-spiro-4’-piperidines. Six members were …

A Proposal For A Section Of An Lds Church History Textbook For High School Students Containing The History Of The Church From 1898 To 1951, Arthur R. Bassett

Theses and Dissertations

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been organized for over one hundred and thirty-six years. The history of nearly a century of that time--1866 to the present--has not been adequately dealt with in any single book currently available for use on the high school level as an L. D. S. seminary text. The objective of this field project was to produce textual materials covering a fifty-three year portion of this period--the portion 1898-1951.

Church history material relative to this period was gathered and organized in a biographical framework centering in the lives and administration of the four …

A Morphological And Histological And Histochemical Study Of The Intracellular Inclusion Bodies In The Intestinal Epithelium Of The Prenatal And Postnatal Rat, Paul D. Shervey

Theses and Dissertations

A morphological and histochemical study of the epithelium of the small intestine of the developing rat was performed using the following techniques: (1) hematoxylin and eosin; (2) periodic acid-Schiff; (3) Alcian blue; (4) alkaline phosphates; (5) acid phosphates; (6) non-specif esterace; and (7) leucine aminopeptidase. In addition to those listed above, other reactions were performed including: (1) dihydroxy-dinaphthyl-disulphide; (2) alloxan-Schiff; (3) nile blue sulfate; (4) Ziehl-Neelsen method for acid fastness; (5) Feulgen; and (6) succinic dehydrogenace. To provide a means of demonstrating whether swallowed amniotic fluid is absorbed by the fetal intestine, a colloidal iron preparation was injected into the …
