Theses and Dissertations

Problem: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation of Dogmatism to amount and persistence of opinion change induced by active versus passive participation.

Procedure: Initial measures of Dogmatism and opinions concerning two selected issues were obtained from University of North Dakota undergraduates. An Ecologic Study Of An Overloaded Oxidation Lagoon Containing High Populations Of Purple Sulfur Bacteria, Harvey W. Holm Jan 1969

An Ecologic Study Of An Overloaded Oxidation Lagoon Containing High Populations Of Purple Sulfur Bacteria, Harvey W. Holm

Theses and Dissertations

Concomitant with the addition of large amounts of potato starch wastes to the Grafton, North Dakota, municipal sewage lagoon was the development of a new major microbial population, the purple sulfur bacteria. This study attempts to define ecologic relationships of the lagoon, with special emphasis placed on the action of purple sulfur bacteria in the lagoon.

Chemical changes in the lagoon were investigated by monitoring Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), sulfide, sulfate, phosphate, pyruvate, total carbohydrates, volatile acids, alkalinity, and pH. Lagoon water temperatures were observed daily. Microbial ecologic relationships were deduced by enumerating coliforms, fecal conforms, enterococci, total bacteria (TGE …

Removal Of Sulfur Oxides From Synthetic Flue Gas By Lignite Fly Ash, Ellen Bernard Lukes Jan 1969

Removal Of Sulfur Oxides From Synthetic Flue Gas By Lignite Fly Ash, Ellen Bernard Lukes

Theses and Dissertations

The absorption of sulfur dioxide from a synthetic flue gas by fly ash was investigatedo Tests were made by passing a flue gas mixture of known composition over various samples of lignite fly ash and then analyzing the samples by means of x~ray fluorescence

The significance of time, temperature, partial pressure of sulfur dioxide in the flue gas, and the composition of the ash was determined by statistical analysis„ Analysis of variance indicated that the four variables studied all had a significant effect on the amount of sulfur dioxide absorbed by the fly ash at the 99o5 percent confidence level,, …

Inhibition Of Cell Division, Protein Synthesis And Nucleic Acid Synthesis In Escherichia Coli W By Tetracycline Antibiotics, George Henry Miller Jan 1969

Inhibition Of Cell Division, Protein Synthesis And Nucleic Acid Synthesis In Escherichia Coli W By Tetracycline Antibiotics, George Henry Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Tetracyclines, originally isolated in the late 1940's and early 1950's from the mycelium of Streptomyces, have achieved major importance as therapeutic and prophylactic agents against a wide range of infections in human and veterinary medicine. They have also achieved great importance in agriculture where they are widely used to promote weight gain in livestock. Commercial production, during 1958 in the United States alone was 120 tons with a value of approximately $1 million per ton.

The clinical importance of these compounds has stimulated efforts to define their mode of action as inhibitors of bacterial reproduction. Antibiotics having as many functional …

A Study To Establish Criteria For Creating Thematic Literature Units Appropriate To Lds Secondary Schools In The South Pacific, And The Creation Of Three Such Units, Ronald F. Malan Jan 1969

A Study To Establish Criteria For Creating Thematic Literature Units Appropriate To Lds Secondary Schools In The South Pacific, And The Creation Of Three Such Units, Ronald F. Malan

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to develop criteria for creating thematic literature units appropriate to the English language facility and to the culture of students in the LDS secondary schools in the South Pacific, and (b) to create three thematic literature units at the Form 5 (11th grade) level which would exemplify the recommended criteria.
An analysis of questionnaire responses revealed that a concept-centered approach to literature should take precedence, with geographical literature—especially Polynesian—also receiving emphasis. Less attention should be given to developing skill in literary analysis, and more focus placed upon systematically reinforcing other language arts …

Gaertn.) were sampled during the summers of 1966 and 1967, and yielded twenty species of thrips. Three species (Anaphothrips tricolor Moulton, Chirothrips aculeatus Bagnall, Chirothrips simplex Hood) were new distributional records for Utah. Seven species (Frankliniella n. sp. #1, Frankliniella n. sp. #2, Haplothrips n. sp., Leptothrips n. sp., Oedaleothrips n. sp., Sericothrips n. sp. #1, Sericothrips n. …

Inhibition Of Planarian Regeneration, Douglas Pierre Bingham Aug 1968

Inhibition Of Planarian Regeneration, Douglas Pierre Bingham

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes my study of inhibition of brain regeneration in planaria. The flatworm (Dugesia tigrina) possesses a remarkable ability to regenerate lost parts, including the head. The primary objective of my study was to determine the extent to which an inhibiting substance, located in the head, would prevent regeneration of the brain. A secondary objective was to study whether DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide) would facilitate the action of the inhibitor.

Structure And Light: Recent Developments In Contemporary Art, William Landwehr

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an introduction to a recent development in the visual arts . The art of light and structure and its inherent implications have so thoroughly captured the imagination of a new generation of artists that it is rapidly becoming the major artistic force of our century.

Marketing Practices Of Selected Dry Cleaners In North Dakota, Marland R. Lee

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to describe and analyze the marketing practices of selected North Dakota dry cleaners. The first dry cleaning plants in the state of North Dakota are believed to have been established during the late 1890s. The data used in the study was collected from a sample of full-service dry cleaning plants in North Dakota. A mail questionnaire was employed in the survey.

The results of the survey showed that the average reporting dry cleaning plant in North Dakota was somewhat smaller than the typical dry cleaning plant in the United States. The median gross receipts …
