Multiculturalism And The Media: Using Racially Motivated Films To Increase Attitudes About Race, Nacovin J. Norman
Theses and Dissertations
The attempt to answer the question, "Do racially motivated movies (media) affect young adolescents' attitude on multiculturalism?" was capable of yielding significant results. The study required sampling a population of seventh and eighth graders. The participants demonstrated variability in regards to ethnicity, age, social class, and level of cognitive functioning. Using the paired sample t, ANOVA and various non-parametrical tests, the answer to the question seems to correspond with the research. Therefore, using media can have a significant and an immediate effect, on not only multiculturalism, but human behavior as well.

Post-Processing Of Low Dose Mammography Images, Jesung Kim
Post-Processing Of Low Dose Mammography Images, Jesung Kim
Theses and Dissertations
In mammography, X-ray radiation is used in sufficient doses to be captured on film for cancer diagnosis. A problem lies in the inherent nature of X-rays to cause cancer. The resolution of the images obtained on film is directly related to the radiation dosage. Thus, a trade-off between image quality and radiation exposure is necessary to ensure proper diagnosis without causing cancer. A possible solution is to decrease the dosage of radiation and improve the image quality of mammograms using post- processing methods applied to digitized film images. Image processing techniques that may improve the resolution of images captured at …

Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is concerned with the stability of inclined boreholes. It addresses the mechanical stability of a wellbore as a function of time while also considering the impacts of chemical osmosis, temperature differences between the drilling mud and formation, and the introduction of an impermeable filter cake on the state-of-stress near the wellbore. The stress and pore pressure expressions are derived for the general case of an arbitrarily inclined wellbore subjected to three, unequal, in-situ stresses. It is assumed that the material is the linearly poroelastic and the stress and pore pressure expressions are found by solving the three-dimensional problem …
Perceptions Of Persons With Mental Retardation Regarding Inclusion In Death And Dying Rituals, Paulette Marie Wagner
Perceptions Of Persons With Mental Retardation Regarding Inclusion In Death And Dying Rituals, Paulette Marie Wagner
Theses and Dissertations
The principle of normalization requires that persons with mental retardation (MR) be encouraged to participate in the death and dying rituals which help people process the death of a loved one. It is widely argued that persons with MR would benefit from such inclusion, but little research exists to confirm this, or even to determine the degree to which persons with MR are encouraged to or discouraged from participating in death and dying rituals.
The purpose of this study was to identify how adults with MR are being included in death and dying events and rituals. It also adds to …

This thesis presents a new and unique procedure named "Surfaced Splicing". Surface Splicing allows for the generation of all quadrilateral surface meshes as well as the ability to edit these meshes via the dual. The dual contains the same data as the mesh but, unlike the …
Evaluation And Analysis Of Array Antennas For Passive Coherent Location (Pcl) Systems, Baris Calikoglu
Evaluation And Analysis Of Array Antennas For Passive Coherent Location (Pcl) Systems, Baris Calikoglu
Theses and Dissertations
Passive Coherent Location (PCL) systems use a special form of a radar receiver that exploits the ambient radiation in the environment to detect and track targets. Typical transmissions of opportunity that might be exploited include television and FM radiobroadcasts. PCL implies the use of a non-radar electromagnetic sources of illumination, such as commercial radio or television broadcasts also referred as transmitters of opportunity. The use of such illumination sources means that the receiver needs to process waveforms that are not designed for radar purposes. As a consequence, the receivers for PCL systems must be much more customized than traditional receivers, …
"Ja, Ich Habe Einen Deutschen Pass, Aber Ich Bin Doch Schwarz": Black German Confrontations With Blackness, Valerie M.C.E. Dube-Luvai
"Ja, Ich Habe Einen Deutschen Pass, Aber Ich Bin Doch Schwarz": Black German Confrontations With Blackness, Valerie M.C.E. Dube-Luvai
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the complexities of constructing a German identity as a black German. The recent emergence of Germany's black minority group was generally perceived as an opportunity to reevaluate Germanness as it has been understood in the past. However, this thesis shows that a reevaluation of Germanness lacks full support because traditional German ideals of racial superiority continue to exist in the consciousness of all Germans - black and white. This suggests that theories of racial superiority continue to determine belonging and identity construction in Germany. Above all, the presence of Western racial ideology in black German identity construction …
A Comparison Of Coalescent Estimation Software, Kristen Piggott Shepherd
A Comparison Of Coalescent Estimation Software, Kristen Piggott Shepherd
Theses and Dissertations
Coalescent theory is a method often used by population geneticists in order to make inferences about evolutionary parameters. The coalescent is a stochastic model that approximates ancestral relationships among genes. An understanding of the coalescent pattern of a sample of sequences, along with some knowledge of the mutations that have occurred, provides information about the evolutionary forces that have acted on the population. Processes such as migration, recombination, variable population size, or natural selection are the forces that affect the genealogies and lead to genetic variability in a sample. Coalescent theory provides a statistical description of the variability in the …

An Analysis Of Horizontal Flow Treatment Well Applicability For The Treatment Of Chlorinated Solvent Contaminated Groundwater At United States Forces Korea Installations, Michael R. Staples
Theses and Dissertations
Past research has shown that there is a rising public concern with environmental issues in the Republic of Korea (ROK). As Korean government and public interest in the environment grow, there is likely to be increased pressure to remediate environmental contamination at United States Department of Defense (DoD) installations in Korea. Impacting DoD's ability to remediate contaminated sites overseas is the fact that limited environmental funds must compete with high priority mission requirements. Thus, particularly at overseas bases, there is an urgent need for inexpensive and effective groundwater remediation technologies. Horizontal Flow Treatment Well (HFTW) systems have been demonstrated in …
