Experiencing The Formalness: The Role Of Contextual Cues In Consumers’ Luxury Perception And Lifestyle Preference, Zhenyu Jin
Theses and Dissertations
Formalness, which refers to the sense of seriousness, importance, and significance, is a commonly-encountered experience in consumers’ daily lives and can influence consumer behavior in wide domains. Despite its ubiquitous nature, research on consumer experiences of formalness in marketing settings is limited. This dissertation investigates the sense of formalness in consumer behavior, exploring its antecedents and consequences in sensory marketing, luxury consumption, and consumer lifestyles.
Essay 1 identifies one of the antecedents and consequences of formalness sense by exploring how music used in marketing communications and retail environments can induce a sense of formalness in consumers, which in turn shapes …
“So, The World Isn’T Just Old White Guys?”: Student And Teacher Experiences In A Culturally Relevant Advanced Placement Chemistry Class, Jason Thomas Sox
“So, The World Isn’T Just Old White Guys?”: Student And Teacher Experiences In A Culturally Relevant Advanced Placement Chemistry Class, Jason Thomas Sox
Theses and Dissertations
This action research case study explores the impact of a culturally and socially diverse Advanced Placement Chemistry curriculum on student and teacher experiences. This study emerged due to my lack of multicultural teaching practices, which limited meaningful connections for students of diverse backgrounds. Once aware of this deficiency, I created four thematic units that blended chemistry content with aspects of culturally relevant pedagogy and social reconstructionism. Surveys, reflection logs, observations, and a focus group interview captured data related to student and teacher experiences throughout the intervention period, which suggest the culturally relevant pedagogy supported students’ understanding of content, increased student …
The Effects Of Feedback And Prior Knowledge On The Processing Of L2 French, Lesley Erin Smith
The Effects Of Feedback And Prior Knowledge On The Processing Of L2 French, Lesley Erin Smith
Theses and Dissertations
The strand of feedback research within the field of Instructed Second Language Acquisition (ISLA) examines the effects of feedback on the development of second language (L2) knowledge and learning behaviors. While findings often make claims about the relationship between feedback and language processing, much of this research has not measured learners’ concurrent responses to feedback. By and large, the effects of feedback have been inferred from test scores collected after feedback is provided, with few studies analyzing how feedback affects L2 learning behaviors in real time (i.e., during a task). Consequently, we know little about how feedback affects language processing. …
Language Ideologies In Transgender Communities In The U.S. South, Archie Crowley
Language Ideologies In Transgender Communities In The U.S. South, Archie Crowley
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines how metalinguistic discussions within transgender communities in South Carolina are shaped by experiences, identities, and ideologies related to intersecting social dimensions, specifically, gender, age, race, and regional identity. Based primarily on 20 ethnographic group and individual interviews with 41 transgender individuals living in South Carolina, as well as over 24 months of participant-observation in two trans organizations, the analysis illustrates how trans South Carolinians simultaneously navigated changing norms of community language use, expectations of regional linguistic practices, and mainstream discussions of trans linguistic affirmation. I draw on these sociolinguistic and linguistic anthropological methods to examine how discourses …

Theses and Dissertations
This study aims to investigate if students who have been identified intellectually disabled are able to gain phonemic awareness by using Wilson’s Fundations in a self-contained setting. Most research has focused on students who are not identified as intellectually disabled. In this mixed method action research study, the students were given a first grade reading fluency test and a first grade word reading test for six weeks as the quantitative data. Both instruments were tested using a two-tail t-test, week one’s results were compared to week six’s results on both tests. All five the participants showed growth over the six …
Preparing In-Service Elementary Teachers To Support English Language Learners: A Qualitative Case Study Of A Job-Embedded Professional Development Using Tpack, Rachel Theresa Lopez
Preparing In-Service Elementary Teachers To Support English Language Learners: A Qualitative Case Study Of A Job-Embedded Professional Development Using Tpack, Rachel Theresa Lopez
Theses and Dissertations
Nation-wide, the number of English Language Learners (ELL) in our classrooms continues to increase. Twenty percent of students enrolled in California public schools are ELLs, the highest percentage in the nation. With the continuously growing number of ELLs in our classrooms, our mainstream teachers must be prepared to teach content and meet the unique linguistic needs of these students. At Sotomayor Elementary School in the Central Valley of California, 38% of the students enrolled are ELLs. Despite high numbers of ELLs, the district sees minimal evidence of intentional planning for Designated English Language Development (D-ELD), or instruction specifically targeted to …

Communicative Kissing With Alien Poetry: New Muses In Neil Gaiman’S “How To Talk To Girls At Parties”, Leanna Ashley Herbert
Communicative Kissing With Alien Poetry: New Muses In Neil Gaiman’S “How To Talk To Girls At Parties”, Leanna Ashley Herbert
Theses and Dissertations
The representation of women in the fiction of Neil Gaiman is a topic that seems to obsess scholars, critics, fans, and (likely) the author himself. It is imperative that closer scholarly attention be paid to the figure of the muse, a figure defined in contemporary culture by her representability, as she appears across Gaiman’s works. This thesis traces the evolution of m/Muses or muse-like figures in the fiction of Neil Gaiman, arguing that the short story “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” imagines an empowering evolution for those who are objectified or silenced by the assumption that they are …
Class, Politics And Family Life: A Study Of Progressive Working-Class Parenting, Elise Danielle West
Class, Politics And Family Life: A Study Of Progressive Working-Class Parenting, Elise Danielle West
Theses and Dissertations
Parenting is entwined with political and social class realities, but rarely is this intersection explored. Seminal research in social reproduction theory finds that working-class parents pass on to their kids a “sense of constraint,” while middle-class parents successfully transmit class advantages that reproduce inequality (Lareau, 2011, p. 3). This research could be enriched by a political analysis that considers parents’ political ideology. On the other hand, research addressing ideological reproduction describes a model of progressive parenting that takes a stand against inequality, but it is not known how this model applies to working-class parents (Lakoff 2002). In this exploratory project, …
Efficacy And Outcome Beliefs Of General And Special Education Teachers Working With Culturally Linguistically Diverse Students With Disabilities, Jennifer L. Hastings
Efficacy And Outcome Beliefs Of General And Special Education Teachers Working With Culturally Linguistically Diverse Students With Disabilities, Jennifer L. Hastings
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to understand general and special education teacher perceptions about collective teacher efficacy (CTE), culturally responsive teaching self-efficacy (CRTSE), and culturally responsive instruction outcome expectancy (CRIOE) and the educational success of culturally linguistically diverse students (CLD) with disabilities. Forty-four teachers (16 general educators and 28 special educators) from six Midwestern school districts completed a survey consisting of CTE, CRTSE, and CRIOE. The findings from this study suggest general and special education teacher participants did not perceive themselves or their colleagues as culturally responsive. Yet, general and special education teachers agreed that CRT positively affects student …
Hierarchical Joint Entity Recognition And Relation Extraction Of Contextual Entities In Family History Records, Daniel Segrera
Hierarchical Joint Entity Recognition And Relation Extraction Of Contextual Entities In Family History Records, Daniel Segrera
Theses and Dissertations
Entity extraction is an important step in document understanding. Higher accuracy entity extraction on fine-grained entities can be achieved by combining the utility of Named Entity Recognition (NER) and Relation Extraction (RE) models. In this paper, a cascading model is proposed that implements NER and Relation extraction. This model utilizes relations between entities to infer context-dependent fine-grain named entities in text corpora. The RE module runs independent of the NER module, which reduces error accumulation from sequential steps. This process improves on the fine-grained NER F1-score of existing state-of-the-art from .4753 to .8563 on our data, albeit on a strictly …
What Black Students Need From White Teachers: A Qualitative Inquiry, Renee Sherie Andrews
What Black Students Need From White Teachers: A Qualitative Inquiry, Renee Sherie Andrews
Theses and Dissertations
Black high school students who attend majority-white schools are educated in environments that are contradictory to their cultural backgrounds. Because the teachers at these high schools tend to be mostly white, Black students in these environments t typically feel a lack of connection or that they do not belong. In this qualitative study, I explored the relationships between Black students and their white teachers. Data sources for this study included interviews of both Black students and their teachers. From the data, I found that Black high school students need the following from their teachers: (1) check in on them regularly; …
Back Country: Queer Rural Temporalities, Pansies In The Bluegrass, Cooper Lane Gibson
Back Country: Queer Rural Temporalities, Pansies In The Bluegrass, Cooper Lane Gibson
Theses and Dissertations
My practice utilizes an intermedia and anti-disciplinary approach to conjure a reflexive vision of my experience as a gay and gender non-conforming person in rural Kentucky. Concepts that are important to my practice are storytelling, embodiment, and assemblage. Coming up gay in rural Kentucky I often felt like an assemblage. Not quite one thing entirely, but many parts swirling together in a fluidity that isn’t easily categorizable. Part farm boy, part faggot, part miss piggy. I am also interested in assemblage as a way of making. Found objects and images are tools I employ as a way of inviting the …
Marginalized Populations And Trauma-Informed Practices At The Secondary Level: Understanding The Connections Between Trauma Exposure And Academic Outcomes Through An Intersectional Framework, Kirsten Hany
Theses and Dissertations
This research seeks to understand the relationship between marginalized identities and trauma in adolescents in relation to classroom outcomes, both behavioral and academic, through an intersectional framework. A synthesized review of literature as well as a quantitative study using the HSLS:09 data was conducted to discern how marginalized populations experience trauma in the school environment, and how that trauma impacts academic outcomes. The conclusions drawn through the review of literature and research suggest that marginalized students experience trauma at higher rates as well as disruption of academic outcomes. These conclusions are disseminated in chapter III which is a practitioner piece …
Named Entity Recognition From Biomedical Text, Maged Guirguis
Named Entity Recognition From Biomedical Text, Maged Guirguis
Theses and Dissertations
As vast amounts of unstructured data are becoming available digitally, computer-based methods to extract relevant and meaningful information are needed. Named entity recognition (NER) is the task of identifying text spans that mention named entities, and to classify them into predefined categories. Despite the existence of numerous and well-versed NER methods, the bio-medical domain remains under-studied. The objective of this research is to identify an efficient technique for NER tasks from biomedical data. This is achieved by investigating using deep learning technologies namely pre-trained BERT [1] model and its variances SciBERT [2] and BioBERT [3]. Preprocessing the data before passing …
Invisibility And Dis-Identification Of Algerian Women: Feminist Jurisprudence Eyes On The Legal Provisions Related To Personal Status And Criminal, Sophia Lina Meziane
Invisibility And Dis-Identification Of Algerian Women: Feminist Jurisprudence Eyes On The Legal Provisions Related To Personal Status And Criminal, Sophia Lina Meziane
Theses and Dissertations
Much of the debate around women’s rights in legal systems focuses on the increase of protection as a legal mechanism for approaching and guaranteeing gender equality. Yet, what extensive or comprehensive analysis has been done on how effective such laws are when applied? This thesis discusses the extent to which a feminist legal theory, separate and distinct from the patriarchal legal system, can demonstrate how an Islamic or Napoleonic order is conceptually another male rationality. While one could possibly identify inefficiencies of laws proclaiming equality and protection for women, the context of the question is inevitably entrenched in the very …
Towards A Structural Judicial Approach In The Egyptian Administrative Courts: Proportionality As A Practical Solution, Mohab Ali Rashdan
Towards A Structural Judicial Approach In The Egyptian Administrative Courts: Proportionality As A Practical Solution, Mohab Ali Rashdan
Theses and Dissertations
The lack of detailed and explicit law provisions governing human rights cases obliges judges to fill this legal gap by applying generic constitutional articles. Now that all human rights are interdependent and overlapping, they practically conflict with each other. Therefore, Egyptian judges are obliged to issue a decision in these cases despite such tensions, taking into consideration the lack of detailed and explicit law provisions regulating these disputes. The question here concerns the criteria that the administrative courts should adopt when overseeing administrative decisions to judge in a case when there are two or more disputing and conflicting interests organized …

Depending on the concept of “Social Listening” as a theoretical framework, the study examines the possible ways the Egyptian government can …
Classifying Emotions And Toxicity On Audio To Text Signals From Videos On Youtube, Connice Trimmingham
Classifying Emotions And Toxicity On Audio To Text Signals From Videos On Youtube, Connice Trimmingham
Theses and Dissertations
Recent technological advancements have pushed humans past the boundaries of a computer screen. They have facilitated human-computer-interaction that were once inconceivable including emotional and audio engagement. Users are now able to utilize technology in more human-like ways and instantaneously transfer depth of opinions and emotions. This global prominence of modern technology, specifically with social media, has spawned a new norm, in which it is now a reasonable expectation of encountering high online toxicity on social media platforms. In addition, the complexities of human emotions make it challenging to determine whether toxic comments trigger certain emotions or vice versa. This study …
Abū ʿAmr Ibn Al-ʿAlāʾ (D. 154/770) And Qur’Anic Philology In The Second/Eighth Century, Ali Abdel Latif
Abū ʿAmr Ibn Al-ʿAlāʾ (D. 154/770) And Qur’Anic Philology In The Second/Eighth Century, Ali Abdel Latif
Theses and Dissertations
The present study examines Abū ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAlāʾ (d. 154/770), an important scholar whose life coincided with the rise of the various disciplines of Qur’anic philology. I examine his contribution to the field Qur’anic philology, focusing on three distinct yet overlapping genres: Qur’anic chronology, Qur’anic counting, and variant readings. Because these genres were still in development during his time, the material examined in this thesis allows us to examine their state before they reached full development. As we do not have a written corpus by Abū ʿAmr, we will analyse material that was transmitted by his students and preserved in …
Multimodal Image Retrieval Combining Image And Text, Md Imran Sarker
Multimodal Image Retrieval Combining Image And Text, Md Imran Sarker
Theses and Dissertations
Retrieving visual or textual similarities from an image query and vice versa has drawn much interest in computer vision. With the growth of the E-commerce marketplace, image retrieval provides excellent competitive opportunities for vendors and customers through a robust recommendation system. Feature integration has always been an essential task for multimodal-based image retrieval approaches. However, different existing matching techniques have been used separately for visual and text similarity. Still, researchers are looking for new methods when it comes to multimodal Image Retrieval. In this paper, I study the image retrieval task, where the input query is an image plus text …
A Universe Of Mirrors: The Mirror Metaphor In Ibn ʿArabī’S Thought In Relation To Ontology, Knowledge, And Perfection, Basma Eletreby
A Universe Of Mirrors: The Mirror Metaphor In Ibn ʿArabī’S Thought In Relation To Ontology, Knowledge, And Perfection, Basma Eletreby
Theses and Dissertations
The mirror metaphor is ubiquitous in sufi texts. It operates uniquely in Ibn ʿArabī’s thought and writings as a representation of his conception of the cosmos. Being, knowledge, and perfection are among the seminal themes of al-Shaykh al-Akbar’s thought, and the mirror metaphor is employed in revealing their reality in his writings. As opposed to Unity of Being, a term that Ibn ʿArabī does not employ, the mirror embodies the pillars of Ibn ʿArabī’s conception of Being through representing the quintessential huwa lā huwa, the configuration of oneness and manyness, and most importantly, the definition of the relation between God …
Students’ And Teachers’ Perceptions Of Using Memes In Esl Classrooms, Fadwa Youssef
Students’ And Teachers’ Perceptions Of Using Memes In Esl Classrooms, Fadwa Youssef
Theses and Dissertations
Using humor in the language classroom has proven to be an effective pedagogical teaching tool that builds rapport between students and teachers. It also reduces anxiety and affective filter as well as increases students’ performance and willingness to communicate in class using their L2 (Azizinezhad & Hashemi, 2011; Banks, 2014; Soares, 2015). Previous studies used humor broadly starting from humorous comments in class to funny TV shows, movies, or songs. Some studies went further using funny memes in class and fewer studies went all the way making students create memes as part of their class requirements (Purnama, 2017). Results of …

Germania Our Mother, Columbia Our Bride: Das Arkansas Echo In The First World War, Harrison Mitchell
Germania Our Mother, Columbia Our Bride: Das Arkansas Echo In The First World War, Harrison Mitchell
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the tone and content that appeared in the German-language Arkansas newspaper, Das Arkansas Echo, during the First World War. The newspaper’s content between the American neutrality period (1914-1917) was compared to the American war period (1917-1918) to see how it changed as political situations changed and anti-German sentiment grew. Additionally, the actions of the Echo’s editorial staff outside of the newspaper were explored within the context of their published content. This thesis found that both periods contrasted sharply with each other. The newspaper expressed support for the Central Powers and the actions of Germany in the American …
The Family Values: Is It Really About The Family? Analyzing The Family In The Egyptian Discourse Through A Sociological Lens, Taher Sabala
The Family Values: Is It Really About The Family? Analyzing The Family In The Egyptian Discourse Through A Sociological Lens, Taher Sabala
Theses and Dissertations
The Egyptian state has put on its shoulders the responsibility of protecting the family and its values. But how this family, in a massive society like Egypt, can be defined? In this paper, I argue that it has never been about protecting the family. However, it is an attempt to shape the citizens into small separate hives which give the State the power to gain access to the intimate details of its citizens’ lives through which they can be easily monitored, managed, and controlled. By analyzing Michel Foucault’s work on government, power, sexuality, and family, I travel through a historical …
Poverty Depiction In Egyptian Films Across The Decades: A Comparative Content Analysis Of Framing Poor Characters In Egyptian Cinema Between 1955 And 2010, Moustafa Abdelfadil Daly
Poverty Depiction In Egyptian Films Across The Decades: A Comparative Content Analysis Of Framing Poor Characters In Egyptian Cinema Between 1955 And 2010, Moustafa Abdelfadil Daly
Theses and Dissertations
This research examines the framing of poverty in Egyptian film productions during a 55-year period from 1955 to 2010. It uses a qualitative analysis to identify and analyze main characters depicted to be poor in films produced under three political eras; Gamal Abdel-Nasser, Anwar El Sadat, and Hosny Mubarak. It analyzes the frequency of featuring poor characters and whether the depiction of poor people was favorable or unfavorable based on three constructs; accountability of poverty, heroism, and honesty. Out of 41 main characters studied, 22 were found to be poor, with Nasser's era witnessing the highest representation of poverty. Most …
An Analysis Of The Ash’Ari-Mu’Tazilite Conflict In The Ḥāshiya Of Ibn Al- Munayyir In Al-Kashshāf By Al-Zamakhsharī, Nabil Haskanbancha
An Analysis Of The Ash’Ari-Mu’Tazilite Conflict In The Ḥāshiya Of Ibn Al- Munayyir In Al-Kashshāf By Al-Zamakhsharī, Nabil Haskanbancha
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I analyze the Sunni Ash’ari response to the Mu’tazilite Qurʾan commentary al- Kashshāf written by al-Zamakhsharī (d.538/1144), and the significant role of the gloss commentary (hashiyā) in highlighting the theological debates between Ash’ari and Mu’tazilite scholars. Alongside the main commentary, this thesis demonstrates the pivotal role of the hashiyā in Islamic studies through its intersection with theology and philology, uncovering active debates on the critical interpretations of the text by exegetes. Al-Kashshāf is the most commented text in the tafsir genre despite its Mu’tazilite influence, mostly receiving criticisms from conservative Sunni scholars. The first Ash’ari scholar to …
The Application Of Graph Technology For Improving Entity Resolution Results In The Context Of Group Membership, Md Abdus Salam Siddique
The Application Of Graph Technology For Improving Entity Resolution Results In The Context Of Group Membership, Md Abdus Salam Siddique
Theses and Dissertations
The main objective of Entity resolution (ER) is to find duplicate records within the same data table from the same source or different data tables from various sources. A traditional pair-wise supervised entity resolution matching depends on pre-built rules for finding matched records. On the other hand, unsupervised or semisupervised also relies on pair-wise matching. In the maximum case, group membership is left behind for consideration. In this dissertation, I have discussed the design, implementation and evaluation of a graph-based entity resolution for group membership to enhance the pair-wise matching ER system. I have designed and implemented a pipeline for …
