Mahu And Native Hawaiian Culture: Experiences Of Non-Heteronormativity, Rachel Beth Chapman
Mahu And Native Hawaiian Culture: Experiences Of Non-Heteronormativity, Rachel Beth Chapman
Theses and Dissertations
There are extensive amounts of psychological research that highlight the needs and experiences of racial ethnic minority populations in general and more specifically minority sexual identities and genders, also referred to as non-heteronormative populations (Alexeyeff & Besnier, 2014). However, there continues to be a lack of representation in the research of Polynesians and an even greater lack of representation of non-heteronormative Polynesians and their experiences (Allen et al., 2011). Māhū, a population of native Hawaiians who identify as non-heteronormative or third gender, are almost completely absent from scholarly work. This study examines the experience of self-identified māhū and how mental …

Evapotranspiration In Urban And Agricultural Systems With Interacting Irrigation And Nitrogen Fertilizer Treatments, Samantha R. Shumate
Evapotranspiration In Urban And Agricultural Systems With Interacting Irrigation And Nitrogen Fertilizer Treatments, Samantha R. Shumate
Theses and Dissertations
Nitrogen (N) fertilizer and irrigation are important inputs for all managed plant species, especially in arid and semi-arid climates. The interaction between N management and irrigation can lead to more sustainable practices. This is true for both agricultural and urban environments. Precision nutrient management has been widely adopted by producers in recent decades, and water conservation has become an important goal for turfgrass managers. In urban systems, our goal was to evaluate Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) to determine response to three N fertilizer rates and three irrigation rates in all possible combinations. The main and interacting treatment effects were …
Exploring New Horizons In Microwave-Promoted Iminyl Radical Chemistry And Synthesis Of Bulky Dehydroamino Acids, Jatinder Singh
Exploring New Horizons In Microwave-Promoted Iminyl Radical Chemistry And Synthesis Of Bulky Dehydroamino Acids, Jatinder Singh
Theses and Dissertations
The first project in this dissertation presents a simplified and efficient protocol for synthesizing pyrrolines through 5-exo iminyl radical cyclizations. The microwave irradiation of O-Phenyloximes tethered to alkenes causes N-O homolysis resulting in iminyl radical generation, which subsequently undergoes 5-exo-trig cyclizations furnishing pyrrolines. This eliminates the need for toxic radical initiators (AIBN, benzoyl peroxide), propagating agents (Bu3SnH, (Me3Si)3SiH), and expensive catalysts or single-electron transfer (SET) cycles. We explored the scope of diverse traps and substrates for iminyl radical cyclizations. The iminyl radical cyclizations formed versatile pyrrolines with moderate to excellent yields. The diastereoselectivity also ranged from low to high. Moreover, …

School Psychologists' Recommendations For Tiered Interventions That Target Social-Emotional Competencies, Brandi Alise Bezzant
School Psychologists' Recommendations For Tiered Interventions That Target Social-Emotional Competencies, Brandi Alise Bezzant
Theses and Dissertations
Many schools advocate for addressing the diverse needs of students through a multi-tiered model of prevention and intervention known as the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework. This framework often incorporates the use of universal screening to obtain data concerning students' academic and/or social-emotional and behavioral needs. School teams are expected to design and implement tiered strategies in response to data concerning students' social-emotional needs; this can be a challenging facet of MTSS. To aid in this endeavor, this qualitative study elicited school psychologists' recommendations for (a) tiered interventions that target secondary students' social-emotional competency needs and (b) professional learning …
Predictors Of Adherence To A Brief Sleep Extension Intervention In Emerging Adults, Isabella D. Wright
Predictors Of Adherence To A Brief Sleep Extension Intervention In Emerging Adults, Isabella D. Wright
Theses and Dissertations
Objectives: It is uncertain what characteristics predict adherence to a brief sleep extension intervention, like that offered in primary care settings. This study examined how mental health concerns (i.e., depression, anxiety, stress), self-control, baseline sleep characteristics, and physical activity predicted adherence to a brief sleep extension intervention. Methods: 184 young adults (ages 18-25; m = 20.96) were asked to extend their nightly sleep to eight hours for one week. Sleep was tracked using actigraphy. Baseline sleep quality, baseline daytime sleepiness, depression, anxiety, stress, self-control, and physical activity were assessed. Results: Poorer baseline sleep quality predicted better adherence (p = 0.002). …
Does Media Facilitate Parent-Child Race Discussions? A Mixed-Method Study Of White Families, Children's Media, And Implicit Bias During Early Childhood, J. Andan Sheppard
Does Media Facilitate Parent-Child Race Discussions? A Mixed-Method Study Of White Families, Children's Media, And Implicit Bias During Early Childhood, J. Andan Sheppard
Theses and Dissertations
The study aimed to investigate through mixed methods how White parents approach race discussions with their children, the factors influencing the discussions, and the implications for promoting constructive conversations. The qualitative analysis of the race discussions revealed that White parents preferred ambiguous or scientific language and diverted the discussion to topics other than race, such as gender or general body characteristics. Discussions often involved referencing personal examples of individuals from racial minority backgrounds, even if they were not personally acquainted. The quantitative analysis expanded and clarified these findings, with parent characteristics, such as education level and the frequency of color-evasive …
Characterization Of Phage-Host Interactions And Its Impact On Tail Fiber Evolution, Jessica Marie Lewis
Characterization Of Phage-Host Interactions And Its Impact On Tail Fiber Evolution, Jessica Marie Lewis
Theses and Dissertations
Beyond the scope of what our unaided eyes can see is a diverse and rich microbial community that greatly impacts each of our lives. Bacteria are microscopic organisms that can grow, develop, divide, and even rapidly evolve to adapt to new changes in their environment. Because of this, bacteria have gained the ability to thrive in extreme biological niches ranging from the high temperature and pressure surrounding hydrothermal vents to the harsh acidic conditions of our stomachs. One adaptation attracting attention, however, is their capability to survive in the presence of common and even last-resort antibiotics. The WHO recently reported …
Predicting The Best Birds And Bees: Parental-Efficacy As A Mediator Between Parental Factors And Parent-Child Sex Communication, Meg O. Jankovich
Predicting The Best Birds And Bees: Parental-Efficacy As A Mediator Between Parental Factors And Parent-Child Sex Communication, Meg O. Jankovich
Theses and Dissertations
Recent literature on parent-child sex communication (PCSC) has identified optimal sex communication as being not only frequent, but also open in quality, and proactive in timing. However, no studies have sought to understand what motivates parents to participate in this type of optimal parent-child sex communication, nor assessed these relationships longitudinally. Using Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to inform the analysis, this study investigated parent characteristics (parent's sexual self-concept and parenting dimensions) that may longitudinally predict optimal PCSC. This study further examined whether parental sex communication efficacy mediated these relationships. The sample included 607 mother-child dyads, and the father-figure when available (mother-father-child …
Loading Force In Recreational Runners And Its Effect On Achilles Tendon Biomechanical Properties, Joshua K. Sponbeck
Loading Force In Recreational Runners And Its Effect On Achilles Tendon Biomechanical Properties, Joshua K. Sponbeck
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Achilles tendinopathy is a common debilitating running related injury. Achilles tendon loading force has been hypothesized as a contributor to Achilles tendinopathy. Loading force through the Achilles tendon during running is impacted by many factors such as footwear and foot strike pattern. Achilles tendon biomechanical (Achilles tendon cross-sectional area, thickness, echogenicity, stiffness, and T2*) responses to loading forces are variable and measurable in vivo. These responses impact the physiologic function of the tendon. Aims: 1) To evaluate baseline Achilles tendon biomechanical characteristics associated with a runner's habitual foot strike pattern. 2) To evaluate single running bout Achilles tendon biomechanical …

Barriers And Facilitating Factors Of Sleep Assessment/Screening Among School Psychology Practitioners, Tyler Jjay Landon Storey
Barriers And Facilitating Factors Of Sleep Assessment/Screening Among School Psychology Practitioners, Tyler Jjay Landon Storey
Theses and Dissertations
Sleep is an important and necessary part of life. While the biological need for sleep among school-aged individuals has not changed over the years, the quality and quantity of their sleep has. School-aged children reporting sleep deficits in the United States is on the rise and a significant body of research establishes associations between a lack of sleep and lower cognition as well as psychological and behavioral problems. These associations can heavily influence the academic progress and success of students. School psychologists are in a unique position to identify and provide support to individuals with sleep issues. Unfortunately, there is …
The Generalizability Of Proposed Theoretical Factor Models For Common Assessments For Specific Learning Disability In Reading Using A Community Sample, Sean B. Vanhille
The Generalizability Of Proposed Theoretical Factor Models For Common Assessments For Specific Learning Disability In Reading Using A Community Sample, Sean B. Vanhille
Theses and Dissertations
Specific learning disabilities (SLD) are among the most diagnosed developmental disorders in children, with specific learning disability in reading (SLDR) as the most common. SLDR typically occurs due to deficits in phonological processing that can negatively impact decoding and/or reading comprehension skills. Reading deficits are often diagnosed using formal assessments such as the Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing (CTOPP-2), the Gray Oral Reading Test (GORT-5), the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-V), and the Woodcock Johnson Achievement Battery (WJ-IV-A). I did not find any research in which the theoretical factor models proposed in the technical manuals of these assessments were …
Investigating Bismuth As A Surrogate For Plutonium Electrorefining, Greg Chipman
Investigating Bismuth As A Surrogate For Plutonium Electrorefining, Greg Chipman
Theses and Dissertations
Conducting research experiments on plutonium electrorefining is difficult due to the significant hazards and regulations associated with nuclear materials. Finding a surrogate for plutonium electrorefining studies would enable more fundamental research to be conducted. Potential surrogates were identified by determining the physical properties required to conduct electrorefining using a molten metal and molten salt in CaCl2 at 1123 K. More potential surrogates were identified by changing the matrix salt to be a LiCl-KCl-CaCl2 eutectic salt with electrorefining conducted at 673-773 K. Ce-CeCl3, In-InCl3, Zn-ZnCl2, Sn-SnCl2, and Bi-BiCl¬3 were investigated as potential plutonium electrorefining surrogates. Ce electrorefining in molten CaCl2 resulted …
Physics-Guided Modeling Of Acoustic Environments Using Limited Spatio-Spectro-Temporal Data, Mylan Ray Cook
Physics-Guided Modeling Of Acoustic Environments Using Limited Spatio-Spectro-Temporal Data, Mylan Ray Cook
Theses and Dissertations
When creating data-based models it is important to include the underlying physical characteristics and constraints of the data. If physical characteristics are not properly included in the model, results may be infeasible or physically impossible. Acoustic environments are better characterized by ensuring that models include the fundamental spatial, spectral, and temporal characteristics of noise sources, or how they change based on location, frequency, and time. When model data are limited, in availability or in reliability, additional care must be taken to ensure models predict feasible results. This dissertation focuses on physics-guided modeling of acoustic environments using limited data, taking into …
Tailoring Digital Physical Activity Support Messages For Women In Midlife With Elevated Risk For Cardiovascular Disease: A Multicomponent Study, Kiri Baga
Theses and Dissertations
Women in midlife (ages 40-60) are at heightened risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Although physical activity (PA) engagement can reduce CVD risk, few women engage in sufficient PA to receive this benefit. They cite lack of social support as a key barrier, but existing interventions that employ social support show limited effectiveness. Digital PA support messages (i.e., brief, text-based messages delivered via smartphone or other device) may be a powerful method to meet social support needs in daily life. However, women’s preferences for and responses to distinct types of messages are not well understood. The aim of this study was …
From La Cosa Nostra To La Cultura Del Narcisismo: Psychoanalysis As Public Philosophy In The Sopranos, Thomas Patrick Brown
From La Cosa Nostra To La Cultura Del Narcisismo: Psychoanalysis As Public Philosophy In The Sopranos, Thomas Patrick Brown
Theses and Dissertations
The aims for this thesis are to further investigate the show’s use of Tony’s psychotherapy as a narrative device in building the relationship between the work of art and the spectator. This device, I argue, possesses a Brechtian character: it not only breaks up the narrative action, but it also comments upon it. Most importantly, this device grounds spectators in a psychoanalytic outlook which enables the spectator to analyze the show’s central anti-hero, interpret the series of events around him, as well as the criticize the American climate he is a symbol for. I advance the thesis that The Sopranos, …
Ecofeminism Reimagined: Discourse & Embodiment In Young Adult Literature, Laurel Krapivkin
Ecofeminism Reimagined: Discourse & Embodiment In Young Adult Literature, Laurel Krapivkin
Theses and Dissertations
In this project, I will begin to develop a reimagined ecofeminist lens that is informed by a careful attention to the relationship between discourse and embodiment. The field of children’s literature would benefit from additional guidance on how to think complexly about ecofeminist tenants in young adult literature. While the novels I’ve chosen to analyze in this project certainly contain ecofeminist themes such as care, reciprocity, discussion of embodiment, depictions of nature and the relationships between humans and the environment, this project’s scope is not to create a definition for what constitutes an ecofeminist young adult text. Rather, I intend …

Helpful Or Harmful? The Effect Of Heritage Language Use On Perceived Maternal Closeness In United States Immigrant Families, Catalina Valdez
Theses and Dissertations
Language use patterns and parent-child relationship quality in immigrant families are both subject to change over time, and past research on the impact of immigrant children's heritage language use on various measures of well-being yields mixed results. Extending scholarship on heritage language use and immigrant family dynamics, I examine the association between different language patterns in U.S. immigrant families and mother's reports of parent-child closeness. I analyze data from 1,142 mothers when their children are in kindergarten, third grade, and fifth grade using the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study "“ Kindergarten Cohort of 2010-2011. I find little variation in perceived maternal …
Awareness, Acceptance, And Equanimity: Relationships Between Trait Mindfulness, Stress, And Blood Pressure, Gabrielle Renee Chin
Awareness, Acceptance, And Equanimity: Relationships Between Trait Mindfulness, Stress, And Blood Pressure, Gabrielle Renee Chin
Theses and Dissertations
Hypertension (HTN) is associated with stress and unhealthy emotion regulation. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) are said to help address stress-related diseases like cardiovascular disease by impacting stress and emotion regulation, yet studies of MBIs on cardiovascular health show inconsistent findings. Limited research has examined the basic links between trait mindfulness and cardiovascular health, leaving the active components of MBIs in this context unclear. Therefore, the current study examined the relationship between trait mindfulness and blood pressure (BP) in individuals with pre-hypertension (pre-HTN). Latent variables representing two conceptualizations of trait mindfulness -Monitor and Accept Theory (MAT) and Equanimity- were calculated using facets …
Regulation Of Stress Responses And Membrane Morphology By Dspa In Synechocystis Sp. Pcc 6803, Rebekah Kathryn White
Regulation Of Stress Responses And Membrane Morphology By Dspa In Synechocystis Sp. Pcc 6803, Rebekah Kathryn White
Theses and Dissertations
In the world of microorganisms, cyanobacteria are a uniquely skilled powerhouse. They participate in global nutrient and carbon cycling. They have the ability to photosynthesize, which allows them to use sunlight and carbon dioxide to produce cellular energy. However, photosynthesis has a lot of points were environmental stresses can interfere, increasing the chances of oxidative stress and nutrient imbalances that can amplify deleterious effects. One regulator in particular will be the target of this study. DspA, also known as Hik33, is a histidine kinase that perceives and regulates multiple overlapping stress responses. In this project, abiotic stress effects will be …
Vertical Federated Learning Using Autoencoders With Applications In Electrocardiograms, Wesley William Chorney
Vertical Federated Learning Using Autoencoders With Applications In Electrocardiograms, Wesley William Chorney
Theses and Dissertations
Federated learning is a framework in machine learning that allows for training a model while maintaining data privacy. Moreover, it allows clients with their own data to collaborate in order to build a stronger, shared model. Federated learning is of particular interest to healthcare data, since it is of the utmost importance to respect patient privacy while still building useful diagnostic tools. However, healthcare data can be complicated — data format might differ across providers, leading to unexpected inputs and incompatibility between different providers. For example, electrocardiograms might differ in sampling rate or number of leads used, meaning that a …
The Effect Of An Aiming Device On The Accuracy Of Humeral Transcondylar Screw Placement, Katherine Neal
The Effect Of An Aiming Device On The Accuracy Of Humeral Transcondylar Screw Placement, Katherine Neal
Theses and Dissertations
Canine cadaveric forelimbs (136) were randomly assigned to either treatment (aiming device) or control (fluoroscopic-guided) groups, and to either diplomate or resident for humeral transcondylar screw placement. Each limb underwent a transcondylar humeral screw placement from a lateral to medial direction. Digital radiography was used to evaluate screw trajectory, measured as deviation from the epicondylar line, and eccentricity on the humeral condyle. Procedure time, difference in outcome based on experience level, and complications were recorded. In the right limb, screw trajectory with the aiming device was decreased compared to fluoroscopy. There was no difference of accuracy between leg laterality with …
Disabilities In Higher Education: The Impact Of The Disability Resource Center At Mississippi State University, Brecken Rush
Disabilities In Higher Education: The Impact Of The Disability Resource Center At Mississippi State University, Brecken Rush
Theses and Dissertations
Given the significance of completing college, the low college graduation rate for students with disabilities, and the effect of support services on students in the general population's ability to complete college, it is essential to understand the link between accessing support and attaining positive postsecondary education outcomes for the wide-ranging population of college students with disabilities. Students with disabilities attend postsecondary education more significantly than ever before, and the literature shows they do not perform as well academically as their peers. Higher education institutes expect students with disabilities to perform academically at the same levels as their non-disabled peers. Therefore, …
Impact Of Soil Moisture Stress At Different Phases Of Corn Growth And Development, Ranadheer Reddy Vennam
Impact Of Soil Moisture Stress At Different Phases Of Corn Growth And Development, Ranadheer Reddy Vennam
Theses and Dissertations
Suboptimal soil moisture during the growing season often limits growth and yield potential of corn. This study aimed to assess the impact of varying soil moisture regimes on corn growth at different growth phases involving vegetative, flowering, and grain-filling stages. Exposure to moisture stress (80% of the control) during the vegetative stage resulted in a 65% reduction in stomatal conductance and increased the canopy temperature by 5 oC, which led to a substantial decrease in total dry matter (56%). Moisture stress-induced reductions in silk length (19%) and fresh weight (34%), negatively affected kernel number (53%), and weight (54%). Unlike …
Evaluation Of The Virulence Potential Of Avian Pathogenic Escherichia Coli Isolated From Broiler Breeders With Colibacillosis In Mississippi, Jiddu Joseph
Theses and Dissertations
Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) is a bacterium that is responsible for colibacillosis in birds. However, information about broiler breeder APEC isolates is limited, but the data is critical due to the transfer of this bacteria down the production pyramid to progenies resulting in high mortality. Therefore, we evaluated the phenotypic virulence characteristics of 28 isolates using embryo lethality and day-old chick challenge assays. Also, the in vitro adhesion and invasion potential of selected nine isolates were identified. Results showed more than 1/3rd of the isolates were highly virulent and the virulence increased as the number of virulence-associated genes …

Examining Shifting Factors Predictive Of Health Center Utilization On College Campuses Using The Abm Theoretical Model, Kimberly Loren Reynolds
Theses and Dissertations
There is extensive research over the decades around health care services utilization trends, however, limited data and research exists around student utilization of campus health centers. Furthermore, there is very minimal data on student utilization trends of campus health services since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Since a crucial component to fostering healthy and safe college campuses is through campus health services, it clearly indicates a need for further research on the trends and perceptions of students’ campus health services utilization. This study examines utilization rates of students through exploring key demographic characteristics of students, including their perceptions toward …
