Self-Perceived Needs Of Adult Males And Their Significant Others Following Colostomy For Colo-Rectal Cancer, Derry Ware
Self-Perceived Needs Of Adult Males And Their Significant Others Following Colostomy For Colo-Rectal Cancer, Derry Ware
Theses and Dissertations
In spite of continuing advances in diagnostic methods, surgical and medical management, and psychological care, cancer remains the second leading cause of death among adults in the United States (American Cancer Society, 1980), and it continues to engender feelings of futility in its victims and the general population as well. Between 1970 and 1980 more than 6.5 million new cases of cancer were diagnosed, and more than 10 million people were under medical treatment for the disease. There are over 3 million Americans presently alive who have a history of cancer (American Cancer Society, 1980). Approximately 15 percent of all …

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Immediate Corrective Feedback Administered As A Study Aid To Undergraduate Medical Technology Students, Constance Anne Bak
Theses and Dissertations
Twenty-six undergraduate medical technology students at Virginia Commonwealth University were provided with a Hemestasis Study Guide to use during this unit and in preparing for an exam in this area. The study guide contained fifty objective-related questions in multiple-choice format. Answers were printed in latent image and included positive reinforcement for correct selections and remediation for incorrect ones. Thus the student received immediate feedback concerning his response to each question.
An examination grade continuum was plotted for this class utilizing all exam grades in the Hematology course. A similar continuum was plotted for each of the three previous classes. (These …
Genetic Studies Of Questionnaire Data From A Residential School For The Deaf, Frederick Robert Bieber
Genetic Studies Of Questionnaire Data From A Residential School For The Deaf, Frederick Robert Bieber
Theses and Dissertations
A self-administered thirteen page Hearing Loss Questionnaire (HLQ) was designed in order to systematically collect medical and family history data on deaf children and their families. Data were collected from over 400 families with one or more children enrolled in September 1979 at the Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD). Almost 70% of the parents provided pedigree and family history information by completing the detailed HLQ. Computer analyses of the collected data allowed a thorough examination of almost 200 medical and family history variables, providing useful reference data on the MSD probands. Parental responses to a four-step rating scale of …

The Relationship Between A Patient's Stress Level During Hospitalization And His Perception Of His Significant Family Member's Role In Providing Support, Susan Carey Williams Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
A descriptive study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between a patient's stress level during hospitalization and his perception of his significant family member's role providing support. The following subproblems were also addressed:
(1) What types of activities, presently or potentially performed by a significant family member, does the patient perceive as supportive?
(2) What types of nursing activities, as perceived by the patient, are being done to encourage/discourage performance of family support activities?
(3) What other factors does the patient perceive as encouraging/discouraging performance of these family role-related activities?
The Hospital Stress Rating Scale (Volicer and Bohannon, 1975) was …
The Role Of Retained Antigen As An Etiological Agent In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Patricia Liccardi Rice
The Role Of Retained Antigen As An Etiological Agent In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Patricia Liccardi Rice
Theses and Dissertations
The cause(s) of arthritis and many other connective tissue diseases are largely unknown. An infectious agent, either bacterial or viral, has not been unequivocally isolated. Theories on the pathogenesis of arthritis abound. Many of these theories implicate the immune system as the problem.
The early information on animal arthridites implicates retained bacterial cell wall antigens as the basis of the arthritis seen. How-ever, numerous types of antigens, both complex polymers and simple proteins, have been shown to persist in immune animals. The antigens persist in the lymph nodes and spleens playing a role in mediating antibody feedback mechanisms. Antigens also …
An Investigation Of Identity And Self-Esteem In Traditional Married Women During Their Middle Years, And The Impact Of The Life Planning Seminar, Susan E. Ellett
An Investigation Of Identity And Self-Esteem In Traditional Married Women During Their Middle Years, And The Impact Of The Life Planning Seminar, Susan E. Ellett
Theses and Dissertations
There is contradictory evidence as to whether the middle years are problematic for women. The research indicates that the middle years, particularly the empty nest period, are traumatic for some women, but for others a time of relief. More recent research suggests that for women who do find the middle years problematic, certain types of group experiences may be helpful. The purpose of this study was to investigate this time of life for a specific population of women, traditional married women who have devoted their time primarily to raising a family. This study examined identity and self-esteem in these women …
The Relationship Between Self-Concept And Locus Of Control In Physically Abused Women, Betsy Wright Shires
The Relationship Between Self-Concept And Locus Of Control In Physically Abused Women, Betsy Wright Shires
Theses and Dissertations
History can provide some clues concerning the physical abuse of women by men. Beginning in biblical times, women were viewed as the property of men (Steinmetz, 1977). Until 1824 by law, a man was allowed to strike his wife if provoked (Bell, 1977). Under the law, some states still grant "spouse immunity" in cases of assault and battery, where married couples are involved. The focus of this research was to examine the problem of wife abuse through the perspective of social learning theory. Using Roy's theory of adaptation (Roy, 1976), the investigator also examined the area of self-concept as it related …

The Function Of Physical Education In The Educational Structure Of Plato's Republic, Iain C. Adams
The Function Of Physical Education In The Educational Structure Of Plato's Republic, Iain C. Adams
Theses and Dissertations
The 1960s and 1970s have been periods of critical enquiry for education and the school curriculum. Physical education has been unable to provide a united front to its critics due to rival factions within the profession and the lack of established foci and a logical status of objectives. Seemingly to add weight to arguments and positions some of the factions of physical education have cited Plato as an ally. This has brought nothing but confusion and an appearance of contradiction to Plato's ideas.
The major problem is that the ideas of Plato that pertain to physical education have been artificially …

A Study Of The Christian School Movement, Daniel M. Gleason
Theses and Dissertations
The research problem is to examine the Christian school movement through an analysis of the literature that it has produced and case studies of five of its actual schools.
The significance of this study lies in the fact that during the past 15 years the field of Education has witnessed the widespread and rapid growth of this movement. Yet recent research had indicated that at present very little is known about it.
The purpose of this study is to explain and describe this Christian school movement: its philosophy, its view of U. S. educational history, and its view of the …

Personality And Psychophysiological Variables In Maltreating Mothers, William N. Friedrich
Theses and Dissertations
This study was designed to systematically investigate personality, psychophysiological, and cognitive appraisal variables in three groups of mothers, i.e. abusive, neglectful, and low-income control. The first two groups of mothers had been investigated by a county welfare agency and an abuse or neglect charge in the previous 12 months was substantiated with the mother identified as the main perpetrator. These two groups consisted of 14 and 13 mothers respectively, who had been randomly chosen from pools of 26 and 27 mothers respectively. A group of 15 mothers receiving aid from the same county agency was randomly chosen from a pool …
Responsivity To An Experimentally Induced Stress As A Function Of Life Change And Personality, Jerry Allan Boriskin
Responsivity To An Experimentally Induced Stress As A Function Of Life Change And Personality, Jerry Allan Boriskin
Theses and Dissertations
Recent research has consistently shown that life change, as measured by the Social Readjustment Rating Scale, is significantly correlated with the onset of physical and/or psychological problems. Despite their statistical significance these correlations account for very little variance. More recently it has been suggested that personality variables may mediate one's ability to cope with life change. In the present study the relationships between life change and the personality measures of Repression-Sensitization, Sensation-Seeking, Health Locus of Control, State-Trait Anxiety and self reported psychological discomfort (Lanyon's PSI Discomfort subscale) were investigated in a multiple regression analysis.
The second major goal of the …

A Philosophy Of Mutuality In Martin Buber's Writings--Implications For Mainstreaming, Dorothy M. Rath
A Philosophy Of Mutuality In Martin Buber's Writings--Implications For Mainstreaming, Dorothy M. Rath
Theses and Dissertations
The study suggests a relationship which exists between Martin Buber's philosophy of mutuality and a humanistic educational mainstreaming. Mandated by parent-initiated legislation, mainstreaming is intended to reduce the isolation of the handicapped by including them as nearly as possible within the larger group in the regular class, and by giving them greater access to educational resources. This becomes problematic even for those handicapped children in nearest physical proximity. Among the obstacles are society's frequent exclusionist response to the different reflected in the school's preference for homogeneity, and the ideas of competition which dominate education.
The literature indicates that mainstreaming in …

Geographical isolation is defined in the study as the particular circumstances in which schools are in need of supplemental revenue due to a combination of small size and geographical factors which inhibit reorganization or consolidation. The procedure was to investigate, document, and synthesize the actual enactment, implementation, and impact of geographical isolation factors in selected states which have employed such factors in their school revenue legislation.
Chapter II contains a review of the literature regarding the problems of small and isolated schools and the …
The Relationships Among Family Structure, Family Environment And Satisfaction With College, John R. Lorenz
The Relationships Among Family Structure, Family Environment And Satisfaction With College, John R. Lorenz
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the relationships among family structure, family environment, and satisfaction with college. Items taken from Minuchin’s descriptions of Enmeshed and Disengaged family behaviors were compiled and placed in questionnaire form along with the Family Environment scale of the Minnesota Counseling Inventory. The Family Environment scale was chosen in this study as a way of assessing concurrent validity for the newly selected scale items, which comprised the Enmeshed and Disengaged scales. These three family scales and a modified form of the Hoppock Job Satisfaction Blank for assessing college student satisfaction were administered to seventy-one female and twenty-five male college …

The purpose of this study was to investigate how selected special scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) are related to treatment completion and treatment outcome in a privately operated chemical dependency treatment program. Multiple regression analyses, discriminant function analyses, and canonical correlation were used to analyze the data.
In Part I of this study the MMPI scales of Lie, K, Conscious Anxiety, Conscious Repression, Dependency, Dominance, Control, Admission, and Denial were examined to determine their ability to predict treatment completion for 182 males and 48 females. Completion of treatment was associated with lower scores on the Conscious Repression …
The Representation Of Exceptional Persons In Selected Educational Materials, Carol M. Lange
The Representation Of Exceptional Persons In Selected Educational Materials, Carol M. Lange
Theses and Dissertations
A milestone for special education was reached in November. 1975, when the United States Congress passed Public Law 94:142, The Education for All Handicapped Act. Major implications of this document were that disahled children, ages 3-21, now were given an equal opportunity for a free public education; disabled children, would receive that education in the least restrictive environment; due process would be applicable; and the law would be implemented to ensure an education for the disabled ages 3-18 by 1978, and 3-21 by 1980. A result of this law is that disabled children are entering the public school, and a …

The Effects Of Prenatal And Postnatal Zinc Deficiency On Development Of Long-Term Memory In The Rat, Myra D. Heinrich
The Effects Of Prenatal And Postnatal Zinc Deficiency On Development Of Long-Term Memory In The Rat, Myra D. Heinrich
Theses and Dissertations
The following studies were designed to determine whether zinc deficiency, either prenatal or postnatal, could influence the time course of development of long-term memory in rats. Three nutritional conditions were imposed on litters of rat pups. One group (zinc deficient-ZD) was subjected to a zinc-deficient diet and deionized water. Members of a second group (pair fed-PF) were allowed to eat as much of the zinc-deficient diet as a certain member of the ZD group consumed on the previous day, along with zinc-supplemented water. This PF group was starved, since zinc deficiency typically causes anorexia. The third group (ad libitum-AL) was …

The Effects Of A Life Career Planning Course On Self-Esteem, Career Maturity, And Sex-Role Stereotypes, Judith Juhala Weist
Theses and Dissertations
The major purpose of this study was to determine if participation in a life career planning course would significantly increase participants' self-esteem and career maturity and change participants' sex-role stereotypes, as measured by Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale, the Texas Social Behavior Inventory, the Career Maturity Inventory, and the Personal Attributes Questionnaire. Another purpose of the study was to determine if self-esteem, as measured by the RSE, was positively related to a second self-esteem measure, career maturity, and sex-role stereotypes, as measured by scores on the TSBI, the CMI, and the PAQ, respectively. The subjects in this study consisted of undergraduate participants …
