Each was designed to correspond to a different dimension of career indecision. The research consisted of two related stages. The first stage focused on the construction of the three scales including item development. The second stage involved the examination of the psychometric properties of the scales. In so doing, the internal consistency, temporal stability, independence, and relationship of the three developed scales with external criteria were assessed.Item development initially involved the analysis of the three …

The Potential Of Cognitive Style Constructs As A Contributing Factor In Learning Disability Classification., Alfred W. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to compare learning disabled with nonlearning disabled secondary school students (grades 7 through 12) on their responses to four cognitive style dimensions: (1) psychological differentiation, (2) locus of control, (3) conceptual tempo, and (4) breath of categorization. It was hypothesized that the variables could be used in a discriminating fashion in helping to distinguish the two groups. In addition age was investigated with junior high students being compared to senior high students.Participants for this study were junior-senior high learning disabled and normal students (27 LD and 33 nonLD). The design consisted of two groups …

The Father Role: Correlates Of Fathering Attitudes (Cross-Generational)., Robert Daniel Olson

Theses and Dissertations

The present study focused on the attitudes that fathers hold regarding their father role. In Part 1, 61 men with at least one 4-year old child were assessed as to their father role attitudes, using the Fathering Attitude Survey (FAS). The FAS was created in an earlier study by factor analysis, and was normed on a sample of 360 fathers. Attitudes are measured along nine scales (e.g., Fathering is merely to be tolerated; Fathering is extremely rewarding and satisfying; Father is emotionally involved with his child; Fatherhood hurts his marriage; etc.). These attitudes were related to the men's psychological sex …

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of selected physical socio-environmental variables on total percent body fat. The sample population consisted of single, LDS, white women attending Brigham Young University (BYU) and California State University at Fullerton (CSUF). Significant data as well as trends that appeared were included in this paper.

From the data collected, it was concluded that the sample populations at BYU and CSUF were the same. The incidence of obesity was determined only among individuals attending both universities. The entire sample population mean was 22.19 percent. This percentage did not meet the obesity criteria. …

Level Of Marital Adjustment And Spiritual Well-Being Among Latter-Day Saints, Robert W. Reynolds

Theses and Dissertations

This research will focus specifically on SWB [spiritual well being] among members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). By virtue of his membership in this denomination, the researcher is more familiar with the theology, religious life and traditions of the LDS than those of any other denomination. Latter-day Saint theology has been well defined, and because of a fundamental belief in the prophetic ability of a single leader of the church, the doctrine and practices of the Latter-day Saints are consistent throughout the United States and the world.

The Relationship Between Oral Contraceptives And Intraepithelial Neoplasia Of The Uterine Cervix, Barbara Jeannette Fox

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between specific oral contraceptive use and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), and to determine if duration of use and content of oral contraceptives were related to CIN. The hypotheses tested in this study were: (1) norgestrel-containing oral contraceptives are associated with more severe levels of CIN, and (2) longer duration of oral contraceptive use is associated with more severe CIN.

Data was collected from 52 clinical records of clients who attended a colposcopy clinic during a four month period. Clients included in the study were utilizing one of five specific oral …

Values And Academic Achievement Among Rural Indian High School Students In North Dakota, Janet Lee Clark May 1983

Values And Academic Achievement Among Rural Indian High School Students In North Dakota, Janet Lee Clark

Theses and Dissertations

Literature relating to American Indian formal education reveals that throughout much of history, the majority culture has stressed assimilation in the educational process. Indian students have been encouraged to give up their values and embrace the values of majority culture members. However, for the majority of Indian people, the goals of assimilation have not been realized. Indians have retained unique cultural values.

This study was designed to systematically investigate the role of differential values in the educational process of rural North Dakota Indian high school students. High school students and their teachers from seven schools were surveyed in group testing …

Client Views On Confidentiality, Stephan Podrygula May 1983

Client Views On Confidentiality, Stephan Podrygula

Theses and Dissertations

This study is part of the growing interest in ethical issues in clinical practice. Confidentiality is of particular concern, being regarded by many mental health professionals as a prerequisite for successful treatment. However, conflicts of interest inevitably arise and confidentiality must be weighed against other values. How to deal with these dilemmas has been a matter of considerable debate among professionals; interestingly, the views of clients on these issues have rarely been investigated.

The purpse of the study was to explore the attitudes and expectations of human service/mental health center clients regarding confidentiality. A 36 item scale, consisting primarily of …

The Relationship Between Integrated Electromyography And Torque At Varying Joint Angles And Intensities Of The Static Contraction Of The Rectus Femoris Muscle In Normal Female Subjects, Mary Lee Metelak Leikas May 1983

The Relationship Between Integrated Electromyography And Torque At Varying Joint Angles And Intensities Of The Static Contraction Of The Rectus Femoris Muscle In Normal Female Subjects, Mary Lee Metelak Leikas

Theses and Dissertations

Sports medicine specialists, researchers, and rehabilitation specialists are frequently concerned with quantifying muscular activity for the purpose of studying muscle function. Two instruments that are currently used are the Cybex II Isokinetic Unit and integrated electromyography (IEMG). The Cybex measures torque and IEMG measures the neuro-muscular activity associated with a contracting muscle.

When measuring muscle function on the Cybex and IEMG, one would not expect linear relationship to exist between the two values if biomechanical, anatomical, and physiological factors are allowed to change. One would expect a linear relationship to exist if these factors were held constant.

The hypotheses were …

Synthesis Of Style In Gabriel Faure's Preludes For Piano, Jane A. Lien May 1983

Synthesis Of Style In Gabriel Faure's Preludes For Piano, Jane A. Lien

Theses and Dissertations

Gabriel Faure occupies an important position in the history of French music. Through his conscious rejection of the influences of German romanticism he was instrumental in the recovery of artis tic standards which are thought of as typically French— logic, clar ity, moderation, balance— qualities which link Faure to a long line of French classical tradition. His stature in this respect is indis putable. His importance as a transitional figure in the overall course of music history is less commonly recognized. Bridging the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, he synthesized a traditional, yet progressive, musical style.

Faure's Preludes for Piano are …

Interactions Between Murine Peritoneal Macrophages And Naegleria Fowleri, Leigh Ann Belcher Jan 1983

Interactions Between Murine Peritoneal Macrophages And Naegleria Fowleri, Leigh Ann Belcher

Theses and Dissertations

In the present study, we have examined the differences among Corynebacterium parvum-activated, thioglycollate-elicited, and resident macrophages from (C57BL/6 X C3H)F1 mice utilizing two microcytotoxicity assays. Macrophage and Naegleria fowleri were interchangeably employed as effector and target cells. To assess the ability of the macrophage to lyse N. fowleri, the amoebae were labeled with 5 μCi of 3H-uridine per 5 x 10^5 cells for 18 h prior to co-culturing with adherent macrophage monolayers. Although the macrophage-induced lysis was density and time dependent, C. parvum macrophages consistently demonstrated an increased cytotoxic response to N. fowleri after 24 h co-incubation at a 10:1 …
