Chapter 11 Reorganization: Creative Management Or An Abusive Of The System?, William R. Zilliot Jul 1984

Chapter 11 Reorganization: Creative Management Or An Abusive Of The System?, William R. Zilliot

Theses and Dissertations

Recent developments within the Bankruptcy Court system are controversial. Several of the largest corporations in the United States are currently undergoing reorganization. To some companies, Chapter 11 is the only way out of staggering debt, to others Chapter 11 is a means to stall liability suits, and to still others Chapter 11 represents a way to force wage concessions in the place of honoring union contracts. The entire Bankruptcy Court system itself has been successfully challenged as being Unconstitutional, and continues to operate only by a special dispensation from Congress.

When these developments are placed in an historical context, they …

An Analysis Of The Dimensions Of Congressional Voting: The Case For Foreign Aid, Donald R. Morrison May 1984

An Analysis Of The Dimensions Of Congressional Voting: The Case For Foreign Aid, Donald R. Morrison

Theses and Dissertations

The major focus of this paper concerns defining congressional issue dimensions towards the American foreign assistance programs of 1979 to 1982. The resulting dimensions serve as a foundation to identify coalitions of congressmen who support or oppose different aspects of foreign aid policies. Previous foreign aid vote studies have usually divided congressmen into pro and con camps or placed them along activist-restrained continuums. This study, however, is based on the assumption that foreign aid policy has become too complex for such divisions and that its dimensions center more around the types of aid, the purposes of aid, and the ideological …

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a pioneer study of the influence of James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses on Hart Crane's White Buildings. As such, it is both an influence study and a close reading of Crane's finest poems in a new light.

The first part of the essay (the introduction and the first three chapters) tackles the question of influence, the authors who helped shape Crane's literary make-up, and the extent and limitations of these influences as compared to the thorough-going influence Joyce exerted on Crane. In those chapters I examine the role played …

Effects Of N-Substituents On The Polymerization Properties Of Maleimide, Dilip R. Abayasekara

Theses and Dissertations

The effect of the amide function and the carbethoxy function on the polymerization properties of maleimide are reported. The effects of these functions on homopolymerization and copolymerization (with styrene) were examined. These electron-withdrawing groups appeared to decrease the rate of homopolymerization and increase the rate of copolymerization.

N-carbamylmaleimide and N-carbethoxymaleimide were copolymerized with styrene in 1,4 -dioxane at 60.0° C at different feed ratios to high conversion. Copolymer composition, determined by elemental analysis and 1H NMR, indicated that while 1:1 copolymers were obtained with an equimolar feed ratio, the two systems were not alternating. It is of note that the …

The Effects Of Seismic Blasting On Shallow Water Wells And Aquifers In Western North Dakota, Frank W. Beaver Jr. P. E. Jan 1984

The Effects Of Seismic Blasting On Shallow Water Wells And Aquifers In Western North Dakota, Frank W. Beaver Jr. P. E.

Theses and Dissertations

Seismographic petroleum exploration throughout North Dakota has generated concern over the effects of blasting on groundwater supplies and wells. A preliminary investigation revealed complaints alleging declining productivity and decreased water quality in regions where coal aquifers are extensively used. Unplugged shotholes were frequently cited as a source of problems.

Experimental results indicate that changes due to blasting occur within long term physical the aquifers rather than in specific water wells. Pumping tests conducted in a sand and coal aquifer system showed no apparent physical effects when shots were detonated one quarter mile away from the pumping wells. Shots 500 feet …
