The Girl Scouts In Utah: An Administrative History, 1921-1985, Jennifer L. Lund Jan 1986

The Girl Scouts In Utah: An Administrative History, 1921-1985, Jennifer L. Lund

Theses and Dissertations

Girl Scouting began in Utah in 1921 out of a desire of several wealthy women to help build the character of young girls in Ogden. Exhibiting many elements of the "social gospel" aspect of progressivism, they adopted the Girl Scout program which emphasized preparation for practical living, appreciation of nature, and development of character.
Since the first troops were organized in Ogden, Girl Scouting slowly spread throughout the rest of the state, resulting in several Councils and Lone Troops. After responding to a call for consolidation from the National Girl Scout Council the Utah Scouts made a dramatic change in …

A History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Japan From 1948 To 1980, Terry G. Nelson Jan 1986

A History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Japan From 1948 To 1980, Terry G. Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

The history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Japan from 1948 to 1980 is a study in cross-cultural interaction. Compared to the earlier attempts of the Church in proselytizing the Japanese in the period 1901 to 1924, there are some significant contrasts. The earlier mission is seen as an attempt by a small, relatively unknown, provincial religion, in financial straits, just emerging into the twentieth century, trying to establish itself in a non-christian, fiercely nationalistic, culturally closed nation.

From very humble beginnings, starting with second and third generation Japanese in Hawaii, and with LDS members of …

The Effects Of Fly Ash And Flue-Gas Desulfurization Wastes On Groundwater Quality In A Reclaimed Lignite Strip Mine Disposal Site, Frank W. Beaver Jan 1986

The Effects Of Fly Ash And Flue-Gas Desulfurization Wastes On Groundwater Quality In A Reclaimed Lignite Strip Mine Disposal Site, Frank W. Beaver

Theses and Dissertations

Coal conversion wastes were generated at a lignite-coal-fired, steam-electric power station near Center, North Dakota, and were buried in unsaturated and saturated settings within the nearby stripmine, typical of settings used by the industry. The study ran for 8 years beginning in 1978. Approximately 240 piezometers were used for collecting groundwater level and groundwater chemistry data in the saturated zone. Pressure-vacuum lysimeters were installed to sample the unsaturated zone. Interstitial water was extracted from Shelby tube and auger samples at otherwise uninstrumented points.

More than 15,000 water-level recordings allowed precise definition of groundwater flow and occurrence at the study site. …

Lehi's Vision Of The Tree Of Life: An Anagogic Interpretation, Julie Adams Maddox Jan 1986

Lehi's Vision Of The Tree Of Life: An Anagogic Interpretation, Julie Adams Maddox

Theses and Dissertations

The significance of Lehi's life tree is that it gives life. Lehi's tree expresses the nonverbal, renews Lehi, effectually creates a culture, and keys the structure of a literary, viable, and contemporary scripture. My thesis chapters grow out of my reading of myth, tree mythology, and Lehi's dream. I see Lehi 1) traveling a polemic course toward the tree, 2) confronting the tree's death, and 3) by suffering, opening the symbol to his inner vision.
Lehi's first dream images, a dark and dreary wilderness vs. a man in white, suggest the birth of mythic creation. By traveling through and reconciling …

Age And Experience Differences In Posture And Movement Of Children While English Horseback Riding At A Walk, Mary Katherine Belissary

Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this study were to: (1) describe posture and movement of non-disabled children while English horseback riding at a walk, (2) propose a developmental sequence for each of three components of body posture and movement: the upper extremity the lower extremity, and the head and trunk, and (3) describe age differences in posture and movement while riding.

The study was designed as a cross-sectional descriptive study. Thirty children without disabilities: ten five-year-olds who had never received formal riding lessons; ten seven- and eight-year-olds who had received six months or less of formal riding lessons; and ten nine and …

An Evaluation Of Two Training Programs Designed To Enable Hostages To Cope More Effectively With Captivity Stress, Thomas Strentz Jan 1986

An Evaluation Of Two Training Programs Designed To Enable Hostages To Cope More Effectively With Captivity Stress, Thomas Strentz

Theses and Dissertations

In the present study, airline employees undergoing highly realistic but simulated captivity as hostages were given one of three types of prestress training programs. One group of subjects was given Problem (P)-focused training, which emphasized activities which would be useful in actively manipulating the stress situation. A second group was given Emotion (E)-focused training which emphasized techniques designed to help them directly modulate fear and anxiety associated with the situation. A third (control) group was given no specific stress management training. Retrospective data from the Ways of Coping Check List indicated that subjects tended to engage in the type of …

Synthesis Of Polyhydroxybenzene Derivatives For Evaluation As Antitumor Agents, Douglas L. Brown Jan 1986

Synthesis Of Polyhydroxybenzene Derivatives For Evaluation As Antitumor Agents, Douglas L. Brown

Theses and Dissertations

In order to prepare more effective inhibitors of ribonucleotide reductase a series of 4-substituted and 4,5-disubstituted catechols were synthesized and tested. The derivatives synthesized were also examined for their antitumor activity against L1210 leukemia in mice. A free radical scavenging assay was performed to establish what electronic parameters may govern in vitro and/or in vivo activity. The molecular features of the most potent compounds were compared to the features of the natural substrate of reduction, CDP, UDP, GDP and ADP.

The results obtained from the free radical assay did not show any correlation to the results observed either in vitro …

The dependent variables were overall achievement, skills, applications, and retention in each of these areas. The sample consisted of five classes of introductory-level algebra at Virginia State University. The experimental group consisted of 50 students in two classes; the control group was made …

Phonetic Ambiguity Perception In Reading Disabled And Non-Disabled Children And Adolescents, Elizabeth A. Carter Jan 1986

Phonetic Ambiguity Perception In Reading Disabled And Non-Disabled Children And Adolescents, Elizabeth A. Carter

Theses and Dissertations

There are speculations that disabled readers may fail to correctly decode written words because they are insensitive to language's phonetic form. This insensitivity is presumed by some to be due to a speech perceptual deficit. The purpose of the current study was to assess differences between disabled and non-disabled adolescents and elementary school students in their perceptual accuracy in decoding phonetically ambiguous speech. The effects of two processing factors derived from previous research, priming and word form (e.g., Spencer & Carter, 1982), were also examined to assess how perceptual processes may differ between groups. Clinical evidence of some verbal problems …

The Incidence Of Auscultatory Gaps In Hospitalized Adults, Elizabeth Tayloe Courts

Theses and Dissertations

The study was undertaken to determine the incidence of auscultatory gaps in hospitalized adults and to determine whether a relationship existed between the presence of a gap and the patient's age, sex, race, or medical diagnosis. Blood pressures were taken bilaterally on 120 randomly selected hospitalized adults using the technique recommended by the American Heart Association. None of the subjects in the sample had an auscultatory gap present.

Characterization Of A Staphylococcal Trimethoprim Resistance Gene, Jerald Preston Coughter Jan 1986

Characterization Of A Staphylococcal Trimethoprim Resistance Gene, Jerald Preston Coughter

Theses and Dissertations

Trimethoprim resistance(Tp r) is encoded by conjugative plasmids in clinically significant staphylococcal isolates. Two genetically and physically similar plasmids from S. aureus, pG01 and pGOS, have Tp r genes that map in different locations on these plasmids. In order to study the relatedness of the Tp r genes and their products to other known Tp r genes, a 1.2 kb fragment of pG01 and a 4.2 kb fragment of pGOS were cloned in E. coli and used as probes for in situ filter hybridization experiments.

A 500 base pair subclone of the original 1.2 kb fragment containing only the staphylococcal …

Prediction Of Children's Sociometric Status From Adult Ratings, Robert S. Falk Jan 1986

Prediction Of Children's Sociometric Status From Adult Ratings, Robert S. Falk

Theses and Dissertations

Poor peer relations in childhood predict difficulty in adolescent and adult adjustment. Sociometric methods provide a useful way to operationalize social competence. Five groups of children (Average, Popular, Rejected, Neglected, and Controversial), identified by nomination sociometrics, show significant differences on a variety of behavioral and non-behavioral indices. This categorization scheme has value in the identification of children at risk for later maladaptive outcomes, and may be useful in designing preventive intervention programs.

The current study attempted to determine the degree to which diagnostic ratings generated by significant adults can be generalized to the sociometric status of children. Parent and teacher …
