A Comparison Of Inpatient And Outpatient Treatment Programs For Bulimia Nervosa, Claudette M. Richter-Reno
A Comparison Of Inpatient And Outpatient Treatment Programs For Bulimia Nervosa, Claudette M. Richter-Reno
Theses and Dissertations
The current study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of an inpatient stay followed by outpatient treatment for bulimia nervosa, in comparison to an outpatient program only. It was hypothesized that bulimics in the inpatient/outpatient group would be receiving the combined benefits of both inpatient and outpatient treatment, thereby demonstrating greater changes in reduction of bulimic symptomatology than subjects in the less intensive outpatient treatment. Thirty-four, adult, caucasian females meeting the DSM-III-R criteria for bulimia nervosa served as subjects. Nineteen subjects received inpatient/outpatient treatment, while fifteen received outpatient treatment. Subjects completed an initial test packet, including the Beck Depression Inventory …
From Villain To Hero: Traces Of The Gothic Villain/Hero In Four Modern Films, Richard N. Van Eck
From Villain To Hero: Traces Of The Gothic Villain/Hero In Four Modern Films, Richard N. Van Eck
Theses and Dissertations
The Gothic novel of the 19th century js often viewed as the beginning and end of the "true" Gothic. While its role in creating or contributing to other genres, such as Science Fiction, Horror, and Romance, is widely recognized, the view of the Gothic as a "dead" genre often persists. The Gothic tradition has continued to the present time, however, and has experienced a recent resurgence of popularity in modern film.
This thesis proposes to examine four modern films as manifestations of the modern Gothic. A working definition of the original Gothic will be formulated, and then refined through the …

"Training The Young Idea How To Shoot" : Teaching In Barnes County, The First Thirty Years, 1879-1909, Lori Ann Lahlum
"Training The Young Idea How To Shoot" : Teaching In Barnes County, The First Thirty Years, 1879-1909, Lori Ann Lahlum
Theses and Dissertations
Traditionally women and their role in history has been overlooked or under-represented. This thesis will look at teachers and education in Barnes County, Dakota Territory and North Dakota, from the years 1879 to 1909. By 1879 the feminization of the teaching profession had occurred, and most Barnes County, and North Dakota, youth were taught by women. However, this is not only a study of female educators. To understand teaching and education in Barnes County, one needs to include male teachers, for they too played important roles.
The material for this study came mostly from primary sources: Barnes County school records, …

Eric Overmyer's On The Verge A Production Focusing On Feminine Values, Beth Stadem-Carlson
Eric Overmyer's On The Verge A Production Focusing On Feminine Values, Beth Stadem-Carlson
Theses and Dissertations
Eric Overmyer's play On the Verge focuses on three women who leave their world in the year 1888 and enter Terra Incognita, a fanciful world that propels then into the future until they land in the year 1955. The women in Overmyer's play are three extraordinary explorer/adventurers whom, I believe, are based upon three women explorers who actually lived in the late 1800s. The thrust of my thesis focuses on identifying the values displayed by the women in the play, and their real-life counterparts, and determining whether or not these values can be identified as "feminine" or, if indeed, there …

Sequence Specificity Of Teniposide-Induced Deletion And Insertion Mutations At The Aprt Locus Of Chinese Hamster Cells, Yi-Hong Han
Theses and Dissertations
Previous studies suggested that teniposide is a strong clastogen, and that the DNA breakage effect of this drug is mediated by the nuclear enzyme topoisomerase II. Ripley et al found evidence for a correspondence between sites of acridine-induced frameshift mutations in bacteriophage T4 and sites of in Vitro DNA cleavage by T4 topoisomerase II. To identify the sequence specificity of teniposide-induced deletion and insertion mutations in mammalian cells, the CHO-D422 cell line, which is hemizygous at the aprt locus, was employed in this study. Sixty-eight teniposide-induced and 42 spontaneous aprt mutants were analyzed at the DNA sequence level. Compared with …

The Effect Of Body Position Changes On Arterial Oxygen Saturation In Obesity As Measured Noninvasively By Pulse Oximetry, Anna Marie Angela Klosterman
Theses and Dissertations
This study utilized a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design that compared the effect of body position changes on arterial oxygen saturation in obesity as measured noninvasively by pulse oximetry. The null hypothesis, that there would be no difference between oxygen saturation values measured by pulse oximetry with position change from sitting to supine in obese subjects as compared to nonobese subjects, was tested. Fourteen obese, American Society of Anesthesiologist (ASA) physical class status II subjects and 14 nonobese ASA physical class status I subjects were included in the sample population. Thirteen of the obese subjects were further classified as morbidly obese. After …

The objective of this investigation was to evaluate quantitative electroencephalography (EEG) as a measure of CNS stimulation. The reproducibility and sensitivity of quantitative EEG was compared to neuroendocrine, mood, and psychomotor performance measures.
The study was conducted in two parts. The first part investigated the inter- and intra-individual variability associated with a series of pharmacological response measures under baseline (no drug) conditions. It was an open-label pilot study in which eight healthy male volunteers underwent a series of tests (EEG, visual continuous performance task (CPT), a finger tapping task, and self-rated mood scales) repeated eight times over a 12 hour …
Evidence That Nicotine Can Acutely Desensitize Central Nicotinic Cholinergic Receptors In Vivo, John Randolph James
Evidence That Nicotine Can Acutely Desensitize Central Nicotinic Cholinergic Receptors In Vivo, John Randolph James
Theses and Dissertations
Current concepts concerning nicotine's central nervous system (CNS) mechanism(s) of action suggest that this drug is producing its effects via an interaction at nicotiniccholinergic receptors (nAChRs) which open a membrane cation channel. Following initial opening of the channel, nicotine appears to induce a rapid desensitization of the nAChRs, closing the channel and resulting in a cessation of nicotine's effects. Research presented here will provide evidence of this secondary desensitization process in vivo by demonstrating nicotine's ability to induce acute tolerance in the discriminative stimulus (DS) paradigm. The ability of nicotine to elicit DS control of behavior was significantly reduced via …

Denitrification In The Elk Valley Aquifer, Northeastern North Dakota, Gale G. Mayer
Theses and Dissertations
Biological denitrification controls nitrate distribution in the Elk Valley aquifer, which underlies approximately 725 square kilometres of northeastern North Dakota and provides drinking water for farms and rural communities in the area. Increased irrigation has raised concerns over potential contamination from agricultural practices. The purpose of this study was to establish the role of biological denitrification in minimizing concentration and distribution of nitrate and to determine the effect irrigation practices have on groundwater flow and nitrate distribution in the saturated zone.
The aquifer is unconfined and consists of up to 20 metres of glacial outwash and deltaic shale-rich sand deposits. …
