A Study Of Perceptions Of Opportunities For Advancement In Educational Administration In Arkansas, Katherine Russell Lease

Theses and Dissertations

With the expected opportunities for advancement in administration due to the retirement of many current administrators in Arkansas, the study surveyed the perceptions of current secondary administrators and superintendents concerning opportunities or barriers to their advancement in administrative careers. The study also surveyed professional and personal characteristics of the administrators in order to provide a profile of Arkansas secondary administrators and superintendents. The study posed the following questions:

1. Is there a difference between male and female superintendents in their perceptions of opportunities and/or barriers in attaining their first administrative position and their first superintendency? 2. Is there a difference …

The Relationship Between Physician Personality Type And Medical Malpractice Risk, Thomas H. Casey Jan 1995

The Relationship Between Physician Personality Type And Medical Malpractice Risk, Thomas H. Casey

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate possible relationships between a physician's personality type and his or her risk of receiving a medical malpractice claim or lawsuit. Patients frequently initiate a malpractice claim for reasons other than the perception of an injury. Often it is the result of a misunderstanding caused by ineffective or insufficient communication with the physician. Different personality types are known to communicate differently.

Six research questions were explored in this analytical-descriptive study. The population was the physician faculty of the Medical College of Virginia. The Myers-Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI) was completed by 236 faculty. Information …

The Linkage Between Hospitals And Nursing Homes: Alternative Approaches To Minimizing Transaction Costs, Herng-Chia Chiu Jan 1995

The Linkage Between Hospitals And Nursing Homes: Alternative Approaches To Minimizing Transaction Costs, Herng-Chia Chiu

Theses and Dissertations

Finding more efficient ways to organize and deliver medical care is a major policy and management concern in the United States. High levels of expenditures for administrative and coordinating functions are attributed to the fact that health care systems are not "seamless" and that excessive transaction or friction costs are incurred in the exchanges between providers and purchasers and among providers. Renewed interest in vertical integration as a means to addressed these problems is being explored in the empirical literature, but rigorous theory-based investigations are rare. This study is a theory-based exploration of how hospitals address the "make-or-buy" decision of …

The Impact Of The Tau Mutation On Reproductive Function In The Golden Hamster, Eliza Leake Thomasson Jan 1995

The Impact Of The Tau Mutation On Reproductive Function In The Golden Hamster, Eliza Leake Thomasson

Theses and Dissertations

The tau mutation affects the circadian system of the golden hamster primarily by decreasing the period of the activity cycle from 24 to 20 hours. To study the effect of this mutation on reproductive function in the golden hamster, 3 experiments have been designed. In the first experiment, wild-type and tau female hamsters will be maintained in conditions of 14:10 LD and 11.7:8.3 LD, respectively. Blood samples will be taken and analyzed by radioimmunoassay (RIA) to determine the timing of the proestrus LH surge. In the second experiment, wild-type and tau males will be transferred to shortened photoperiods of 10:14 …

A National Survey Of Occupational Therapists In The Public Schools: An Assessment Of Current Practice, Attitudes, And Training Needs Regarding The Transition Process For Students With Severe Disabilities, Katherine Josephine Inge

Theses and Dissertations

Because occupational therapy involvement in transition planning is a relatively new area. little was known about the characteristics of school-based therapists who serve students in this age group. The purpose of this study was to determine their current level of participation in the transition process, the roles that therapists identified for themselves in this process, their attitudes towards best practices for serving students ages 14 - 22, and occupational therapists’ future training needs if they are to participate fully in the national transition initiative. A survey was mailed to 1,000 therapists on the American Occupational Therapy Associations Direct Mail List …

Statistical Methods For Detecting And Characterizing Departures From Additivity In Multi-Dimensional Drug/Chemical Mixtures, Kathryn S. Dawson Jan 1995

Statistical Methods For Detecting And Characterizing Departures From Additivity In Multi-Dimensional Drug/Chemical Mixtures, Kathryn S. Dawson

Theses and Dissertations

In studies of the effects of multiple drug or chemical combinations, one goal may be to detect and characterize the interactions between the agents. The techniques currently applied to this problem have limitations when the experiments involve more than 2 agents. Certain response-surface techniques require an unrealistic number of observations for studies involving a large number of agents. Current graphical methods are impossible to use in studies of 3 or more agents. In this research two statistical techniques are described that can be applied to studies with an unlimited number of agents. In the first approach, dose combinations are collected …

Determinants Of Continuity Of Care For Persons Transitioning From State Psychiatric Facilities To Communities, Sarah P. Farrell Jan 1995

Determinants Of Continuity Of Care For Persons Transitioning From State Psychiatric Facilities To Communities, Sarah P. Farrell

Theses and Dissertations

When individuals with serious mental illness are discharged to the community, continuous and coordinated care are both desirable and necessary. A lack of continuity places the individual at risk for becoming lost to further services.

This study explores continuity of care for persons discharged from state psychiatric facilities in Virginia to communities. Continuity of care is defined as the successful initiation and maintenance of face-to-face contact by CSB staff with individuals to be discharged from state hospitals, and the subsequent provision of services post-discharge. This study identifies factors that influence continuity of care, examines the degree to which these factors …

Prevention As A Component Of Homeless Policy: A Longer-Term Evaluation Of The State Of Virginia's Homeless Intervention Program, Emma Kathleen Flaherty

Theses and Dissertations

A comprehensive homeless policy includes emergency housing, transitional housing, permanent housing, and prevention components. Researchers have determined that all four categories of homeless assistance are essential to address the needs of the diverse groups that comprise the homeless population.

This dissertation focuses on the prevention component which is designed to assist those in marginal economic circumstances who experience an unavoidable housing crisis. Several states have state-sponsored and state-funded homeless prevention programs.

The Commonwealth of Virginia authorized funding for the Homeless Intervention Program (HIP) in FY 1989-90. A Short-Term Study of the first group of participants conducted by Johnson, Brooks, Hambrick, …

An Analysis Of The News Coverage Preceding The Resignations Of Nine University Presidents., Julie Kay Henderson Dec 1994

An Analysis Of The News Coverage Preceding The Resignations Of Nine University Presidents., Julie Kay Henderson

Theses and Dissertations

The primary objective of this study was to examine and critique the news coverage of one type of educational issue. Because most educational institutions in the United States receive public financial support, and because most of the public receives its information from the news media, it was judged important for educational leaders to understand the media's methods of covering educational issues. As a second objective, this study also attempted to expand the application of W. Lance Bennett's four information biases from political figures to other public but non-elected figures, in this case university presidents. The specific focus of this study was …

Satellite Surface Material Composition From Synthetic Spectra, Eugene L. Caudill Dec 1994

Satellite Surface Material Composition From Synthetic Spectra, Eugene L. Caudill

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research was to determine if measurements from a Sagnac interferometer could provide reliable estimates of satellite material composition. The Sagnac interferometer yields a spatial interferogram that can sampled by a linear detector array. The interferogram is related to the spectrum of the source through a Fourier transform. Here, spectral reflectivities of nine common satellite materials were used to simulate the spectrum on obtains from an ideal Sagnac interferometer in the beam-train of a ground-based telescope whose mission is to view satellites. The signal-to-noise ratio of the spectrum was varied to simulate the effect of range variation …

Environmental restoration is an area of concern in an environmentally conscious world. Much effort is required to clean up the environment and promote environmentally sound methods for managing current land use. In light of the public consciousness with the latter topic, the United States Air Force must also take an active role in addressing these environmental issues with respect to current and future USAF base land use. This thesis uses the systems engineering technique to assess human health risks and to evaluate risk management options with respect to depleted uranium contamination in the sampled region of Test Area (TA) C-64 …

An Analysis Of The Extent To Which Humor Is Accepted And Employed In The Workplace For The Enhancement Of Productivity And Creativity, Jonathan R. Specht, Paul D. Tobin Dec 1994

An Analysis Of The Extent To Which Humor Is Accepted And Employed In The Workplace For The Enhancement Of Productivity And Creativity, Jonathan R. Specht, Paul D. Tobin

Theses and Dissertations

Today's business literature is filled with discussions of the many benefits humor can bring to the work environment. Two of these purported benefits, namely, the enhancement of workplace productivity and the enhancement of workplace creativity, have attracted the attention of modern managers challenged with keeping their organizations competitive despite dwindling financial and human resources. Unfortunately, little research has been done to date which actually demonstrates a link between the existence of workplace humor and improved levels of productivity and creativity. Without this demonstration of causality, most managers are reluctant to invest corporate resources in pursuit of workplace humor despite its …

The Lived Experience Of Caring And Knowing In Senior Nursing Students, Sherry Neil-Urban

Theses and Dissertations

Caring is identified as a central and defining feature of professional nursing. Yet, there is little explicit emphasis on the philosophy and substance of caring in the traditional nursing program. Rather, caring is subsumed by the pressing need to stay current with expanding definitions of nursing competence and increased knowledge required by licensing boards. The purpose of this phenomenological investigation was to better understand the lived experiences of caring and knowing as expressed by senior nursing students near completion of the nursing program. Eighteen sen ior nursing students, within one month of graduation, participated in this interview study in which …

The Relationship Of Parental Conflict And Parent-Child Relationship To The Sense Of Coherence Of Young Adult Children Of Divorce, Bruce K. Retterath Dec 1994

The Relationship Of Parental Conflict And Parent-Child Relationship To The Sense Of Coherence Of Young Adult Children Of Divorce, Bruce K. Retterath

Theses and Dissertations

Early investigations of children and adolescents of divorce focused on the short-term negative influence of divorce on children and adolescents from "broken homes." Divorce is still seen as an important mediator in children's development, but other variables dealing with the family dynamics have been shown to be significant factors in the response of children to parental divorce. Few studies have considered the long-term influences of parental conflict and the parent-child relationship on young adults, and no studies have examined their relationship with the development of sense of coherence (SOC).

This study investigated the long-term relationship of parents' marital status, parental …

Development Of A Mammographic Image Processing Environment Using Matlab, John L. Kelley Dec 1994

Development Of A Mammographic Image Processing Environment Using Matlab, John L. Kelley

Theses and Dissertations

Breast cancer is a disease that accounts for a disturbingly large number of deaths in females each year. Its prevalence is a topic of concern to all of us since it can affect our families, friends, and coworkers. Although mammographic screening is the most effective method currently available for the early detection of breast cancer, it is far from being an infallible procedure. Mammographic reading is error prone, partly because of the complexity of the task and partly because of the variability in human performance. Computers offer high reproducibility, and when used as an adjunct by the radiologist, may improve …

Empiricism, Anatomy, Reality: Reading Herman Melville In The Menippean Tradition., Francis Carter Kaplan Sep 1994

Empiricism, Anatomy, Reality: Reading Herman Melville In The Menippean Tradition., Francis Carter Kaplan

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study is to draw together the art of Herman Melville, Menippean satire, and the empirical tradition in English and Scottish philosophy. Historical and biographical concerns serve as a background for exploring Melville's satire of Platonism, transcendentalism, and hermeneutic apriority. Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, and Washington Irving are discussed in this respect. The dissertation also contains related fiction pieces. The dissertation develops several intertwined conceptions of analysis, drawing together an empirical critical basis derived from Ludwig Wittgenstein and "ordinary language philosophy," the notion of satire as criticism, and the exploration of these concepts through an examination of …

The Relationship Between Parental Restrictions And The Occurrence Of Aggressive Behavior In Pre-Adolescent Males., Mary Kathryn Zielinski Sep 1994

The Relationship Between Parental Restrictions And The Occurrence Of Aggressive Behavior In Pre-Adolescent Males., Mary Kathryn Zielinski

Theses and Dissertations

Aggression is one of the most prevalent childhood behavior problems and makes up a large percentage of referrals to psychological clinics. Mental health professionals are likely to recommend that parents of aggressive children set firm rules for their children and that the parents be consistent in enforcing these rules. While this recommendation is suggested by research on parental discipline, there is a relative dearth of information on the relationship between the number of perceived parental rules, the perceived consistency of their enforcement, and the level of aggressive behavior in boys. This study attempted to confirm the importance of consistency in rule …
