Examination Of The Putative Glucose-6-Phosphate Translocase Component, T(1), Of The Glucose-6-Phosphatase System., James Darren Foster Aug 1995

Examination Of The Putative Glucose-6-Phosphate Translocase Component, T(1), Of The Glucose-6-Phosphatase System., James Darren Foster

Theses and Dissertations

The enzyme glucose-6-phosphatase is proposed to be a system consisting of at least six components--a catalytic unit (scD-glucose-6-phosphate phosphohydrolase; EC 3.1.3.9), a stabilizing protein, and four or more specific substrate translocases, termed $\rm T\sb1$ (glucose-6-phosphate transport), $\rm T\sb2\beta$ (carbamyl phosphate, inorganic phosphate, and inorganic pyrophosphate transport), $\rm T\sb2\alpha$ (inorganic phosphate transport), and $\rm T\sb3$ (glucose transport). Several of these components have been identified and characterized, but $\rm T\sb1,$ the putative glucose-6-phosphate translocase, has not. Identification and characterization of $\rm T\sb1$ would support the current multicomponent model of the system, and substantiate the existence of a critical component of the system …

Gender Differences In Prose Memory And Post-Trial Intoxication With Ethanol., Rebecca Marilyn Sharp Aug 1995

Gender Differences In Prose Memory And Post-Trial Intoxication With Ethanol., Rebecca Marilyn Sharp

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to compare male and female subjects' recall of prose utilizing a post-trial administration of ethanol. This study examined the interaction of intoxication with ethanol and gender by exploring the subjects' blood ethanol concentrations (BEC's) as they related to performance for each gender. Sixty-five subjects listened to three narrative prose passages presented at the rate of 160 words per minute via a tape recorder. Immediately following the presentation of the prose passages, subjects were administered either 0.0 or 1.0 ml/kg body weight ethanol. Following an ethanol absorption period, BEC's were obtained using a breath …

The Effects Of Nicotine And Nicotine Withdrawal On Memory For Prose., Scott Joseph Krebs

Theses and Dissertations

The present study investigated the effects nicotine and withdrawal from nicotine had on memory for prose passages. Previous research has indicated that nicotine either enhances, impairs, or has no effect on memory. The present study was an attempt to clarify some of these findings.Six groups of subjects were used, including one group who were not regular smokers, and five groups of regular smokers. All subjects were matched on verbal ability and trait arousal levels. The smoking subjects were matched on habitual nicotine consumption levels and length of smoking history and either smoked a nicotine-containing cigarette (0.1mg, 0.7mg, or 1.5mg) or …

Visual And Auditory Information-Processing In Migraineurs: Beyond The Neuropsychological Quagmire, Jeffrey M. Kearney Aug 1995

Visual And Auditory Information-Processing In Migraineurs: Beyond The Neuropsychological Quagmire, Jeffrey M. Kearney

Theses and Dissertations

It is estimated that 20 to 25 percent of the population suffers with migraine headaches. Despite the high prevalence rate, the exact mechanism(s) for producing migraine headache pain is(are) poorly understood at best. Some researchers have proposed that these headaches are entirely vascular in origin, while others have asserted that they are the result of an intricate transaction between genetic, biochemical, physiological, psychological, personality, and environmental factors.

In the past, migraine has been considered a benign syndrome. However, researchers using a variety of neurological measures and an even wider assortment of neuropsychological instruments have reported abnormalities in individuals with migraine …

Physiologically-Based Pharmacokinetic Modeling Of Skin Absorption Using Dermal Subcompartments, Richard L. Bookout Jr. Jun 1995

Physiologically-Based Pharmacokinetic Modeling Of Skin Absorption Using Dermal Subcompartments, Richard L. Bookout Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Dermal penetration of chemicals and drugs is important to both toxicologists and pharmacologists. Drug developers try to enhance and environmental professionals try to limit penetration of chemicals through the skin. Both can use predictive biologically-based mathematical models to assist in understanding the processes involved. When these models are based on physiological and biochemical parameters which can be measured in the laboratory, they can be extremely useful. Appropriately validated models based on first principles can be predictive of human exposures when the processes involved are adequately understood. In this thesis we develop four new physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models to predict blood …

The Efficacy Of An Alternative School, Celeste Wilden May 1995

The Efficacy Of An Alternative School, Celeste Wilden

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines a self-contained day school for emotionally disturbed adolescents by evaluating whether changes produced by the intervention result in practical personally and socially worthwhile improvements. Such evaluation, often called social validation (Kazden, 1977) involves determining whether the changes have brought the student's performance within acceptable levels. Social validation deals with how closely the student's functioning fits expectations of appropriate performance in society (Haring & McCormick, 1990). This hypothesis was tested by the results of a questionnaire given to graduates from the program since DYFS withdrew its funding in 1983. Success was defined as having the ability to support …
