A Study Of Haitian Mormon Converts Dwelling In New York City: A Cross-Cultural Perspective In Understanding, Interpreting, And Experiencing The Mormon Subculture, Yvon Milien Jan 1997

A Study Of Haitian Mormon Converts Dwelling In New York City: A Cross-Cultural Perspective In Understanding, Interpreting, And Experiencing The Mormon Subculture, Yvon Milien

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the roles played by understanding, interpretation of practices, and experience in Mormon culture when Haitians convert to Mormonism. In relationship to their previous cultural practices, this thesis explores whether Haitian converts develop one of three types of behaviors: discard old practices, retain elements of old practices, or seek to establish a balance between former and new religious practices. In-depth interviews with twelve subjects living in New York City suggest that most active converts discarded their old cultural traditions. This study suggests that only interpretation influences developing types of behavior. However, it was not expected that most converts …

Death, Dying, And End-Of-Life Care: Nurse Educators' Prescription For Nursing Education, Carmencita C. Mercado-Poe Jan 1997

Death, Dying, And End-Of-Life Care: Nurse Educators' Prescription For Nursing Education, Carmencita C. Mercado-Poe

Theses and Dissertations

Education on death, dying, bereavement, and end-of-life care is a vital component of the basic preparation of the registered nurse. Yet, practicing nurses continue to report that programs offered in nursing schools do not prepare them adequately to provide comprehensive care to the dying. An explanation given in the literature is that some nurse educators do not value the inclusion of death education in the nursing curriculum. These educators argue that the current curricula are already too full and that skills related to the care of the dying are not as important as life-sustaining skills. They believe that skills related …

The Relationship Among School Climates, Pupil Control Ideologies, And Relative Frequency Of Student Suspensions In Pulaski County Elementary (K-6) Schools, Julia Brown-Rauton

Theses and Dissertations

Student discipline in the public schools has been a major public concern. Public elementary schools in school districts in and around Little Rock, Arkansas are faced with rising numbers of discipline referrals resulting in out-of-school suspensions. This study examined three questions: (1) Is there a significant relationship between elementary school climates (open, closed, mixed) and the relative frequency of suspensions? (2) Is there a significant relationship between elementary school teachers' and principals' pupil control orientation, humanistic or custodial, and the frequency of suspensions assigned? (3) Is there a relationship between school climate and pupil control ideology? Certified teachers, principals, and …

Estimation Of The Ld100p When P Is Small, Daniel Bettendorf Jan 1997

Estimation Of The Ld100p When P Is Small, Daniel Bettendorf

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis concerns the estimation of extreme quantiles on a dose-response curve. It focuses on the Robbins-Monro and up-and-down procedures. Simulation studies run in search of the LD15 and LD30 using a variety of methods suggest that the Robbins-Monro procedure is optimal in terms of Monte Carlo MSE and bias. The up-and-down procedure's performance differs in many cases only slightly from that of the Robbins-Monro process, therefore indicating its value as a practical alternative to the Robbins-Monro process for extreme-quantile estimation.

Mean effect sizes for both post-treatment and follow-up did not differ significantly, Moderator variables associated with program type, measure type, nature of dependent variable, quality of methodology, measure reactivity, measure specificity, and researcher allegiance significantly improved homogeneity across effect …

Tumor Immunity Following Adenovirus Mediated Herpes Simplex Thymidine Kinase Gene Transfer To Experimental Rat Gliomas, Maulik Raj Shah Jan 1997

Tumor Immunity Following Adenovirus Mediated Herpes Simplex Thymidine Kinase Gene Transfer To Experimental Rat Gliomas, Maulik Raj Shah

Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies have determined adenovirus mediated herpes simplex thymidine kinase gene transfer (AV-TK) to be effective for the treatment of experimental gliomas. In this study we report three distinct phenomenon. First, animals with complete regression of subcutaneous tumors upon intratumoral injections of AV-TK with concomitant Ganciclovir® (GCV) administration developed tumor immunity. These animals had the ability to reject a subsequent inoculum of lethal doses of tumor cells. This tumor immunity was long standing and protective as far as 6 months from the time of initial tumor ablation. Of interest, adoptive transfer of splenocytes from AV-TK treated-tumor ablated animals to naive …

Race And Birthweight: The Influence Of Socio-Economic Status And Utilization Of Prenatal Care, Lena C. Frennborn Jan 1997

Race And Birthweight: The Influence Of Socio-Economic Status And Utilization Of Prenatal Care, Lena C. Frennborn

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to determine how much of the variance in birthweight can be explained by socio-economic status and utilization of prenatal care in Blacks and Whites. Rather than defining race in genetic terms, race was understood here as a social construction. The methodological approach was an analysis of the National Survey of Family Growth Cycle IV, 1988. The first, singleton, live birth for each interviewed woman was included, resulting in a sample of 911 women, of whom 313 were Black women and 598 White women.

Consistent with previous research, Black mothers were twice as likely to …

The Sound Of Utah: The Presence Of Geographical Elements In Music Written About The State Of Utah, Kamia Walton Holt Jan 1997

The Sound Of Utah: The Presence Of Geographical Elements In Music Written About The State Of Utah, Kamia Walton Holt

Theses and Dissertations

Music is a by-product of place and time. Musicians have opportunities to use the idea of place in their music. Thus, music has regionally distinctive characteristics which reflect human perceptions of the physical environment. Artists of the past and present focus on geographical themes, and paint a picture of ‘place’ in their music. This thesis focuses on the music of a geographical location: Utah. Musicians wrote of Utah in hymns of the past, and contemporary musicians continue to write music about Utah. This thesis answers the questions: Is music characterized by geography? How have the local musicians been influenced by …

Response Surface Methodology: An Analytical Method For Locating Migrated Contaminant Sources, Orlando J. Dona Jr. Jan 1997

Response Surface Methodology: An Analytical Method For Locating Migrated Contaminant Sources, Orlando J. Dona Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The use and storage of hazardous chemicals at U.S. military facilities often adversely affect the groundwater when contaminants infiltrate the subsurface as a result of leaks and accidental spills. These contaminants, if not located and remediated in a relatively short time, may move and settle unpredictably, essentially creating a source some distance from the original leak or spill. An example of this phenomenon is found with migrating dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) contaminants. Although various methods for estimating the present day locations of these migrated contaminants are in use, accurately pinpointing the source of contaminants remains a difficult problem in …

Persuasion Theories In The Practice Of Public Relations In The 1990'S, Susan E. Owens

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to present ways in which persuasion theories are currently used in public relations and how persuasion theories could be used in public relations. Some public relations textbooks devote a chapter or section to persuasion theories and how they relate to public relations. The public relations practitioner needed a publication that expanded on these theories and provided cases of how they are used in public relations today.

To research persuasion theories and current application of them, current textbooks and periodicals were reviewed at several libraries. The searches at Rowan College, Richard Stockton College and Ocean …

History Fluid And In Motion., Christine Delea Dec 1996

History Fluid And In Motion., Christine Delea

Theses and Dissertations

"History Fluid and In Motion" is a collection of poems that derives its title from a poem in the first section. The collection reflects the view that "history," be it personal or societal, is created and recreated through memory, subjectivity, desire, and ego. History, and our perceptions of reality in the making of history, are fluid rather than fixed; hence, the reality of history is never still. Past, present and future all invent and redefine one another through our biased human eyes.Section One, "Sand and Stone," contains poems that focus primarily on past times and places, and examines how the …

The Biodegradation Characteristics Of Proposed Fuel Systems Icing Inhibitors (Fsii), Charles E. Meshako Dec 1996

The Biodegradation Characteristics Of Proposed Fuel Systems Icing Inhibitors (Fsii), Charles E. Meshako

Theses and Dissertations

The biodegradation characteristics of three fuel system icing ihhibitors (FSII) were evaluated. FSII are jet fuel additives that partition into water readily and are present in the water drained from storage tank bottoms in concentrations approaching 40%. These concentrations raise concerns as to the disposal and handling of these wastes. The current FSII, DiEGME was evaluated along with two new candidates, dipropylene glycol and glycerol formal. DiEGME appeared to be moderately but not completely biodegradable. It is likely that much of it would be removed in a wastewater treatment plant. Dipropylene glycol only showed signs of degradation after more than …

The Contribution Of Auditory Processing To Adult Age Differences In Memory Performance, Danae J. Lund Dec 1996

The Contribution Of Auditory Processing To Adult Age Differences In Memory Performance, Danae J. Lund

Theses and Dissertations

Recently, there has been increased interest in the changes in neuropsychological functioning which are associated with normal aging. Understanding age differences in neuropsychological functioning is of particular importance in the discrimination of normal aging from the early onset of Alzheimer’s Disease or other age-associated dementia. Older adults have been observed to perform more poorly than younger adults on several auditory memory measures which are commonly included in neuropsychological batteries. Age associated declines on these measures have been reported even in the absence of dementia or other health concerns.

To date, explanations for these age differences have focused on a decline …

Mercury Sorption On Metal Oxides, Heidi L. Hitchcock Dec 1996

Mercury Sorption On Metal Oxides, Heidi L. Hitchcock

Theses and Dissertations

This project addresses the fundamental aspects of toxic metal (mercury) sorption by metal oxides. The emission of toxic trace elements from anthropogenic sources, such as combustion, has drawn attention to potential dangers for the ecosystem. Particular concern has been directed toward mercury species because of their high toxicity and tendency to convert into forms leading to mercury accumulation in mammals. Efforts to control mercury species release have centered on sorption technology using carbonaceous sorbents. However, it has been found, in some cases, that fly ash also has some sorptive properties towards mercury species. In order to further understand the sorption …

Economic Valuation Of Air Force Environmental Resources: A Contingent Valuation Case Study, Timothy P. Haynie Dec 1996

Economic Valuation Of Air Force Environmental Resources: A Contingent Valuation Case Study, Timothy P. Haynie

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Force spends $1 billion each year to preserve, maintain, and restore environmental resources under its control (Budget of the United States Government, 1994). Assessing the benefit of this spending is a central issue in federal environmental management. As federal environmental management moves from a "clean it up at any cost" mentality to one which carefully considers the costs and benefits of spending, a fundamental question arises: What value of environmental resources does our environmental spending provide? As in any rational economic exchange benefits must exceed costs; the value of an environmental resource which benefits from public spending must …

Study Of Desorption Of Contaminant From Synthetic Soil, Kung-Fu Hwang Dec 1996

Study Of Desorption Of Contaminant From Synthetic Soil, Kung-Fu Hwang

Theses and Dissertations

A better understanding of sorption and desorption processes could improve estimates of time and cost required for remedial activities, exposure times and health risk, and bioavailability. Conventional rate-limited sorption models do not accurately define the diffusion domain at the grain scale. Heyse (1994) proposed the multiple sites in series (MSS) model, which allows more general description of the geometry of the sorption domain than the classical spherical or discrete distributions. A version of this model was tested by deVenoge (1996). The model was able to accurately simulate sorption rate data, but could not estimate unique geometry parameters. This research is …

A Comparative Analysis Of Two Alternatives To Chemical Aircraft Paint Stripping, George P. Joyce Ii Dec 1996

A Comparative Analysis Of Two Alternatives To Chemical Aircraft Paint Stripping, George P. Joyce Ii

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Force must periodically strip and paint its aircraft to prevent the damaging effects of corrosion. The paint removal process typically involves the use of toxic chemicals such as methylene chloride which are soon to be banned as a result of impending environmental regulations and increased costs associated with handling and disposing of such material. The Air Force must choose an alternative to methylene chloride chemical stripping which complies with environmental regulations and reduces costs. This thesis compares the life cycle costs and environmental impacts of two alternatives to chemical aircraft stripping. Plastic Media Blasting (PMB) and Modified Medium …

Applying Probabilistic Risk Assessment And Decision Analysis Techniques To Avoid Excessive Remedial Investigation Costs, Alejandro Hinojos Dec 1996

Applying Probabilistic Risk Assessment And Decision Analysis Techniques To Avoid Excessive Remedial Investigation Costs, Alejandro Hinojos

Theses and Dissertations

The majority of remediation resources have been consumed by costly and lengthy remedial investigation studies to characterize the human health risk. Unable to deal directly with the uncertainty resulting from the convolution of the uncertainties in a multitude of variables, and heavily persuaded by the liabilities, decision makers and regulators have relied on conservative assumptions and more studies to take appropriate actions. The main objective of this research is to provide tools and techniques to aid risk analysts in determining whether it would be beneficial to gather additional information or whether the decision to take an appropriate action can be …

An Investigation Of Instantaneous Plume Rise From Rocket Exhaust, Paul F. Sand Dec 1996

An Investigation Of Instantaneous Plume Rise From Rocket Exhaust, Paul F. Sand

Theses and Dissertations

Rocket launches at Vandenburg Air Force Base and Cape Canaveral Air Station produce exhaust clouds containing several toxic by-products, including HC1 and A12O3. These clouds rise to atmospheric stabilization heights, and then start dispersing and diffusing through the air. Upon reaching the ground, concentration levels of the toxins may present a human health risk. To predict these risks and concentration levels, range officials use a computer program titled the Rocket Effluent Exhaust Diffusion Model (REEDM). The version currently in use has been shown to underpredict the stabilization height of the exhaust cloud. This thesis examines the theory and algorithms used …

Modeling Marine Exposure To Polychlorinated Biphenyls From Sunken Ships, Charles N. Wendt Dec 1996

Modeling Marine Exposure To Polychlorinated Biphenyls From Sunken Ships, Charles N. Wendt

Theses and Dissertations

In the past, the U.S. Navy has routinely conducted SINKing EXercises (SINKEX) for training, weapon effectiveness tests, and economic disposal of aging assets. Recent concern over polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) chemicals aboard such target vessels has resulted in a suspension of SINKEX. The U.S. Navy has approximately 200 vessels currently requiring such disposal. Environmental legislation and health concerns preclude selling such vessels to foreign governments or scrapping. This work attempted to model the fate and transport of these PCBs by examining their transport to coastal water and their accumulation in the marine food chain. The model includes biodegradation, upwelling, partitioning of …

Surfactant Enhanced Microbial Degradation Of Jp-8 Contaminated Soil, John D. Thomas Dec 1996

Surfactant Enhanced Microbial Degradation Of Jp-8 Contaminated Soil, John D. Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

This research effort used an automated respirometer to evaluate the enhancement of JP-8 fuel biodegradation, from surfactant addition. Two nonionic surfactants, Novell 1412-7 and Alfonic 810-4.5 were chosen for addition to contaminated JP-8, microcosms at three levels of treatment. The three levels of treatment included sub-CMC, CMC, and supra-CMC concentrations for each surfactant. The Novell II, nonionic surfactant, exhibited inhibitory characteristics, and was eliminated from the study. The focus of the study was to determine if JP-8 was actually degraded, and if enhancement of JP-8 biodegradation would be achieved from surfactant addition. The respirometer was found to be repeatable within …

Clustered Microcalcification Detection Using Optimized Difference Of Gaussians, Edward M. Ochoa Dec 1996

Clustered Microcalcification Detection Using Optimized Difference Of Gaussians, Edward M. Ochoa

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to design an automated microcalcification detection system to be used as an aid in radiologic mammogram interpretation. This research proposes the following methodology for clustered microcalcification detection. First, preprocess the digitized film mammogram to reduce digitization noise. Second, spatially filter the image with a difference of Gaussians (DoG) kernel. To detect potential microcalcifications, segment the filtered image using global and local thresholding. Next, cluster and index these detections into regions of interest (ROIs). Identify ROIs on the digitized image (or hardcopy printout) for final radiologic diagnosis.
