Background: Survivors of young adult (YA) cancer often experience substantial stress during the transition to survivorship, which may impair sleep. Although the stress-sleep link is well established, its role within survivor-spouse dyads remains unclear. Emotional intimacy may influence how couples regulate stress and affect sleep. This study examined dyadic associations between stress and sleep among survivors of YA cancer and their spouses and significant others (hereafter spouses) and tested emotional intimacy as a moderator.
Methods: A total of 103 survivor of YA cancer-spouse dyads completed self-reported measures of stress, emotional intimacy, and sleep quality. An actor-partner interdependence moderation model was …

With over 5 million attributed deaths per year, physical inactivity is a major global public health issue. Although the importance of physical activity is well recognized within the scope of obesity and cardiometabolic disease prevention and control, its broader benefits for the health of individuals and societies are yet to be fully harnessed. Furthermore, the role of active leisure, active transport and active labor-primary domains of physical activity-in supporting or hindering social and health equity has been largely overlooked. Here we (1) used a health equity lens to describe global domain-specific physical activity inequalities through an analysis of World Health …

Purpose: Acquired disabilities, such as spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, limb loss (or other major limb injury/illness), or stroke, are typically accompanied by an array of physical and emotional symptoms and social challenges that interfere with recovery and affect quality of life (QOL). Despite advances in personalized medicine, interrelationships between symptoms remain unclear, and clinicians often treat individual symptoms in isolation. The objective of this study was to identify clusters of symptoms that occur across sudden-onset disability populations, with a long-term goal of identifying targets for clinical intervention.
Methods: Participants were 755 adults who sustained a spinal cord injury, …

Fentanyl-related, cocaine-overdose deaths have drastically increased, yet research on how people who use cocaine perceive fentanyl adulteration is limited. This study developed the novel Adulterated Cocaine Purchasing Task (ACocPT), a modification of the original Cocaine Purchasing Task, to quantify how people respond to fentanyl adulteration in cocaine. In the ACocPT, participants indicated how much cocaine they would purchase when cocaine had no (0%) vs. some (10%) probability of fentanyl adulteration. Study aims were: 1) determine how possible fentanyl adulteration affects cocaine demand, and 2) determine which individual characteristics predict continued demand for cocaine despite fentanyl adulteration. This Amazon Mechanical Turk …

Introduction: With new advancements in obesity medicine, clarity on goals and expectations for successful disease management is limited. This post hoc analysis assessed application of proposed treat-to-target (TtT) thresholds for obesity to the outcome measures of SURMOUNT-5, which randomised participants with obesity to tirzepatide or semaglutide.
Methods: The proportion of participants in each treatment group reaching proposed TtT thresholds for waist to height ratio (WHtR) < 0.53, body mass index (BMI) < 27 kg/m2, or a combination was evaluated. The associations between the thresholds and achieving low disease activity to remission (meeting goals for at least four of five defined cardiometabolic risk parameters) and normalisation or improvement in SF-36v2 physical component score (PCS) from baseline to week 72 were explored.
Results: About 23.1%-33.9% of participants treated with tirzepatide and 14.2%-20.7% treated with semaglutide reached the TtT thresholds, with greater weight reduction than the overall population. About 77% of participants who reached WHtR < 0.53 achieved low disease activity to remission, with an odds ratio of 2.31 (p < 0.001) compared to those who did not reach this target. The BMI threshold was not statistically associated with the assessed outcomes for SF-36v2 PCS.
Conclusion: In this …

Individuals who work in loud environments often choose not to wear hearing protection devices (HPDs) while on the job. A prevailing justification for this decision involves potential performance impairments that come with HPD use. While previous research has been successful in characterizing the overwhelming prevalence of this issue, the question of how to go about improving HPD use still remains. In this study, we investigated the possibility that performance while wearing an HPD could improve if people are given listening training with a simulated HPD. Participants listened to podcasts in which the audio was filtered to simulate wearing an HPD …

Non-sterile gloves (NSG) are essential for reducing transmission of pathogens and for protecting patients and staff. Their overconsumption can lead not only to an increased risk of cross-contamination but also increased plastic waste and downstream environmental effects. Glove reduction campaigns worldwide have safely and successfully reduced their inappropriate use and associated waste. In this multidisciplinary commentary, we discuss the sweeping public health and environmental consequences of NSG overuse and strategies to implement a successful glove stewardship campaign.

After subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), some patients develop delayed neurological deficits (DND). Microthrombi are considered a contributing factor to DND, but clinical trials of antiplatelets had mixed results. Existing research suggests that platelets play a role in the etiology of DND, but no comprehensive study has tested causality between platelets and DND after SAH. Here we hypothesize that after SAH, platelet activation promotes microthrombi formation, occlusion of the brain microvasculature and contributes to DND, and that inhibiting platelet aggregation is a therapeutic strategy. Mice experiencing SAH were administered various interventions. The animals were subjected to stimulation of platelets, platelet depletion, or …

Enhancing Undergraduate Learning In Physics: The Effects Of Ai-Assisted And Ai-Guided Instruction On Knowledge, Self-Efficacy, And Satisfaction, Stephen Woods
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as large language models are increasingly used for self-directed learning, yet there is limited experimental evidence on whether they improve learning outcomes and whether theory-informed guidance adds value beyond AI use alone. Prior literature suggests that effective learning depends not only on access to information, but also on how instruction supports attention, working memory, long-term memory, and cognitive load, while also fostering motivational processes such as self-efficacy. Individual differences such as Need for Cognition may also shape how learners engage with cognitively demanding instructional tools such as AI.
The present study examined how different …

Variable Hybridization Rates Between F2 Fundulus Notatus Females, Jordan Tanaka
Variable Hybridization Rates Between F2 Fundulus Notatus Females, Jordan Tanaka
Honors Theses
Hybridization between two related species has been widely observed and offers a lens into complex evolutionary processes. Endogenous and exogenous factors affect hybrid fitness and diversification, and pre-zygotic and post-zygotic barriers affect species’ ability to hybridize. Female mate choice is a pre-zygotic isolation mechanism which is known to be more significant than male mate choice in many species, a trend which is linked to females often investing more energy into offspring. Detailing the ways in which these mechanisms operate is integral to understanding hybridization on a larger scale. The species examined here, Fundulus notatus and Fundulus olivaceous, are closely …

Recent advancements in cancer treatment have introduced the use of aminocyanine molecules, activated by near-infrared (NIR) light, to induce vibrational responses that can selectively destroy cancer cells. This commentary critically examines a study that reports a 99% efficacy of this method against human melanoma cells in vitro, and significant tumor reduction in murine models. While the findings are promising, our analysis highlights crucial oversights in the study’s implications for clinical applications. Specifically, the persistence of even a small fraction of cancer cells post-treatment poses significant risks for tumor regrowth and acquired resistance. Additionally, the study’s approach neglects the heterogeneity of …

Introduction: Despite the growing demand for palliative care, this specialized medical care remains severely underutilized, with almost 50% of countries worldwide lacking access. Given that misperceptions and stigma continue to hinder progress in healthcare policy, this study aims to examine the relationships between palliative care knowledge, attitudes, and receptiveness to better understand how public health communication can enhance awareness and understanding of the topic in Singapore. Applying the adapted knowledge-attitude-practice (KAP) model, it further extends theory by examining the moderating role of media information-seeking between knowledge and receptiveness. Methods: Mixed-mode surveys involving 1,226 participants (926 online and 300 in-person respondents), representing …

Drought presents significant challenges to agriculture, threatening food security and livelihoods, across many regions. In Kenya, recurrent droughts across diverse agro-ecological zones emphasize the urgent need for reliable and scalable drought assessment methods. Although drought assessment with various datasets has been carried out for this region, many of them often use course or moderate resolution data. This study uses high-resolution Sentinel-2 observations and machine learning to monitor intra-seasonal crop conditions and assess drought impacts across bimodal growing seasons. Using pixel-based supervised random forest models trained with multiple vegetation indices as input, we classify croplands into drought-affected and unaffected areas. The …

Environmental transformation driven by human activity has profound implications for the ecology of mosquito vectors and the pathogens they transmit. This study investigated the influence of land-use change on mosquito assemblages, host-feeding patterns, and arbovirus infection across sylvatic-rural-peri-urban land-use types in Marigat subcounty, Rift Valley, Kenya. Adult mosquitoes were collected using CO₂-baited CDC light traps and BG-Sentinel traps across three sites: Kiborgoch conservancy (sylvatic), Ntepes village (rural) and Marigat town (peri-urban). Sampling was conducted during three sessions including September 2022, August 2023, and December 2023. The mosquitoes were morphologically identified to species, and indices of abundance, richness and diversity compared …
