The International Diffusion Of The Mormon Church, Samuel Otterstrom Jan 1994

The International Diffusion Of The Mormon Church, Samuel Otterstrom

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis outlines the international diffusion and growth of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or Mormon Church. A model of Mormon spatial diffusion in foreign countries is developed incorporating both a functional and spatial perspective. The functional perspective includes supply and demand variables which influence the rate of growth of the Mormon Church in a country. The functional perspective is not fully explored in the thesis. The spatial perspective which the study concentrates on seeks to show a general spatial pattern related to the spread of the Church within countries.

The original diffusion of the Church to …

Interactive Control Of A Parallel Simulation From A Remote Graphics Workstation, Douglas C. Looney Dec 1993

Interactive Control Of A Parallel Simulation From A Remote Graphics Workstation, Douglas C. Looney

Theses and Dissertations

Modern military commanders are faced with an overwhelming amount of intelligence data concerning the disposition of engaging forces, The sheer volume of data produced for a single planning scenario is an obstacle to the user as well as the computer. Today’s commander requires a real-time, three- dimensional representation of the battlefield in order to assimilate the data for the management of a conflict. Parallel computation is required to complete the processing of this information in a timely manner. A network protocol is required to link the interface with the parallel simulation. The of this study is to improve user interaction …

A Prototype Architecture For An Automated Scenario Generation System For Combat Simulations, Mark W. Pfefferman Dec 1993

A Prototype Architecture For An Automated Scenario Generation System For Combat Simulations, Mark W. Pfefferman

Theses and Dissertations

This research effort examines the problem of automating the scenario generation process and presents a prototype architecture for an automated scenario generation system. This architecture is designed using an object- oriented approach which leads to a modular and modifiable design. The architecture provides a mechanism for automatically generating scenario files from a textual US Army operation order. This translation process occurs in two phases. First, the text operation order is translated into an intermediate format called the mission file. In the second phase, the system reads the mission file, instantiates intelligent entities, and assigns missions to those entities. The intelligent …

Porter James Mccumber : Evolution Of A Senator, Amy Kathleen Rieger Dec 1993

Porter James Mccumber : Evolution Of A Senator, Amy Kathleen Rieger

Theses and Dissertations

Virtually nothing has been written about the early life and career of Porter James McCumber, who served North Dakota in the United States Senate from 1899-1922. Contributing to the lack of written material about the man is the fact that there are very few sources available concerning his social and political life. He left no official papers, and therefore no clear record of his life. The purpose of this thesis, then, is to illuminate the life and times of McCumber, with a special emphasis on his career in North Dakota through his election to the Senate in 1899. I will …

A Guide To Implementing Reclamation Processes At Department Of Defense Municipal Solid Waste And Construction Debris Landfills, Gregory L. Tures

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis serves as a guide for implementing landfill reclamation techniques on municipal solid waste or construction debris landfills owned, operated, or used by the DoD. The research describes historical and current methods for disposing of solid waste including open dumping, sanitary landfilling, and the development of state-of-the-art sanitary landfill cell technology. The thesis also identifies the factors which have led to the need for new methods of managing municipal solid waste. The vast majority of the study is devoted to identifying actions which should be taken before, during, and after implementation of a landfill reclamation project. These actions include …

Multiculturalism In Predominantly White College Composition Classrooms: A Reconsideration Of Teaching Approaches And Rationales, Doreen Staerke-Meyerring Aug 1993

Multiculturalism In Predominantly White College Composition Classrooms: A Reconsideration Of Teaching Approaches And Rationales, Doreen Staerke-Meyerring

Theses and Dissertations

The thesis explores the problem of multicultural education in predominantly white college composition classrooms. As a rule, proponents of multicultural education in the composition class envision ethnically and racially diverse learning environments. Since multiculturalism in these learning environments tends to reflect the life experiences of the students and thus is likely to enhance their learning experience, multiculturalism is approached as an intrinsic part of the students' experience. The teaching methods for multiculturalism in composition developed on the basis of these ethnically and racially diverse learning environments are then often transferred to predominantly white classrooms. However, this study finds that in …

Divining Place In The Manawaka Fiction Of Margaret Laurence: A Study Of The Five Female Protagonists, Shirley Vaughn Greves May 1993

Divining Place In The Manawaka Fiction Of Margaret Laurence: A Study Of The Five Female Protagonists, Shirley Vaughn Greves

Theses and Dissertations

The problem to be explored is to discover the reason(s) some of her readers find connections to place in the Manawaka fiction of Margaret Laurence. The problem also includes the determination of the meaning of place to Laurence, her female characters, and her readers, both casual and critical.

This exploration includes the examination of her five Manawaka works of fiction, the review of critical analyses of her work, a consideration of reader-response and feminist theories, and a visit to Neepawa, Manitoba, the physical place after which the fictional Manawaka is modeled.

Laurence defines place by geography and people. The physical …

Understanding The Nature Of Bureaucracy: An Integration Of The Organizational And Public Choice Approaches, Rodney G. Vernon Mar 1993

Understanding The Nature Of Bureaucracy: An Integration Of The Organizational And Public Choice Approaches, Rodney G. Vernon

Theses and Dissertations

Bureaucracy is a term that has taken on different meanings in the academic literature since its inception. Vincent de Gournay first coined the term during the eighteenth century to describe the illnesses of rule by officials. Since that time, the term has evolved in organizational theory to describe a form of rational hierarchical organization in the public and private sector and at the same time, the public choice school describes it as a class of institution associated with inefficiency. This study reviews the literature on bureaucracy and incorporates the insights of Austrian economic theory on information, rules, and uncertainty to …

The Hakluyt Stage: Travel, Narcissism, And The Narrative., Thomas Palakeel Jan 1993

The Hakluyt Stage: Travel, Narcissism, And The Narrative., Thomas Palakeel

Theses and Dissertations

In this quincentenary year of the Columbus landfall, as the theorists debate the limitations of Western civilization, my dissertation critiques the narratives collected by Richard Hakluyt (1552-1616) who sought to enter the geographical and ethnographic discourse of the late Renaissance by inscribing the emergent English nation as the custodian of modern civilization. The English rhetoric of civility in the New World has taken the form of a series of monologic narratives, forced inscriptions that seek to normalize the history of colonization, slavery, and imperialism. My study of the narratives in Hakluyt's Principal Navigations (1598) reveals the cultural narcissism of the English …

This Minnesota study was intended to obtain, describe, and analyze legislator, state commissioner, and local service providing agency director perceptions of the change strategies and processes which might permit integrated delivery systems and services to increase and improve services to children and families. The specific research questions asked were (1) How do the policymakers and stakeholders perceive the issues which led to the 1990 legislative initiative in Minnesota? (2) Are there consensual perceptions among the policymakers regarding these issues? (3) What are the policymaker and stakeholder perceptions regarding the efficacy of certain (a) change strategies and (b) change processes? Are …

The Historical Geography Of Swiss Settlers At The Red River Colony 1821-1826, Harleen J. Young Jul 1992

The Historical Geography Of Swiss Settlers At The Red River Colony 1821-1826, Harleen J. Young

Theses and Dissertations

Europeans emigrated to the New World for a variety of reasons. The promise of free land and a better life especially lured many Europeans to North America. When going to a new unsettled area, emigrants have a tendency to go in small, isolated cluster groups which share a primary allegiance to a particular country or province. Such was the case with the Swiss who settled at the Red River Colony on land granted by the Hudson's Bay Company to Thomas Douglas, Fifth Earl of Selkirk, in 1811. The grant was given for the establishment of a farming community at present …

"Training The Young Idea How To Shoot" : Teaching In Barnes County, The First Thirty Years, 1879-1909, Lori Ann Lahlum May 1992

"Training The Young Idea How To Shoot" : Teaching In Barnes County, The First Thirty Years, 1879-1909, Lori Ann Lahlum

Theses and Dissertations

Traditionally women and their role in history has been overlooked or under-represented. This thesis will look at teachers and education in Barnes County, Dakota Territory and North Dakota, from the years 1879 to 1909. By 1879 the feminization of the teaching profession had occurred, and most Barnes County, and North Dakota, youth were taught by women. However, this is not only a study of female educators. To understand teaching and education in Barnes County, one needs to include male teachers, for they too played important roles.

The material for this study came mostly from primary sources: Barnes County school records, …

Attitudes Of Elementary Education Majors Toward Mathematics: A Qualitative Study Of Five Student, Mavis L. Kelley

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study focuses on five prospective female teachers' attitudes toward mathematics. The meanings each informant ascribes to her experiences surrounding mathematics are described in this work. Each informant was interviewed weekly during her senior mathematics methods course and observed and interviewed weekly throughout her student teaching experience. Interviews were open-ended and was the central focus of methodology. A field diary was used to record the reflective portions of field notes.

Experiences were carefully detailed and the informants directly quoted throughout the portraits and themes. The themes that emerged were: (1) meaning in mathematics, (2) narrow view of mathematics, (3) …

Relationships Between Previous School And Life Experiences Of Pre-Service Elementary Teachers And Their Attitudes Toward Science And Science Teaching, Carlyn Elizabeth Grutzner Sampson May 1992

Relationships Between Previous School And Life Experiences Of Pre-Service Elementary Teachers And Their Attitudes Toward Science And Science Teaching, Carlyn Elizabeth Grutzner Sampson

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the relationships between previous school and life experiences of pre-service elementary school teachers at the University of North Dakota and their attitudes toward science and science teaching.

The study incorporated both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The first six pre-service teachers from one of the science methods class who volunteered were selected for taped private interviews. Based on this information a quantitative survey (Sampson Survey I) was designed for discovering the relationship between past experiences of pre-service teachers and their current attitudes toward science and teaching science. Additionally, the Shrigley Science Attitude Scale (Shrigley, 1974b), which assesses attitudes …

A Study Of African American Women And Their Perceptions Of Life In Utah, Jennifer Caye Demayo Jan 1992

A Study Of African American Women And Their Perceptions Of Life In Utah, Jennifer Caye Demayo

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine, through the use of the ethnographic interview (Spradley, 1979), residential preferences, as well as the stated reasons for relocation of African American women who live in a predominantly White, Utah Mormon culture. The "push and pull" factors that impacted the women's decisions to come to and/or remain in Utah were qualitatively analyzed in some detail. The end goal of the research was to determine whether Utah was perceived as a desirable residence by and for African American women.

Residential preference is a complex issue which requires an in depth explanation. The prominent …

Aberrant Mormon Settlers: The Homesteaders Of Highland, Utah, David T. Durfey Jan 1992

Aberrant Mormon Settlers: The Homesteaders Of Highland, Utah, David T. Durfey

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a history of the original thirty-seven homesteaders of Highland, Utah. It covers a period of about twenty-five years, 1875-1900. The study provides an example of a aberrant community which was not established in the same, distinctive style of settlement as the typical Mormon village. In addition it describes the relationship between the original residents and non-residents of Highland with the surrounding villages of Lehi, American Fork, and Alpine.

The Geographical Landscape Of Tabernacles In The Mormon Culture Region, Crystal Wride Jenson Jan 1992

The Geographical Landscape Of Tabernacles In The Mormon Culture Region, Crystal Wride Jenson

Theses and Dissertations

Although tabernacles do not hold the sacred meaning of Mormon temples, they are symbolic landmarks of the culture of the early Mormon Saints. Tabernacles were once an integral part of each community in which they were located. They were often the main buildings in the community, reflecting the coherent, orderly nature of a Mormon town. Today, many of the original tabernacles have been torn down and others are under the threat of destruction.

The first tabernacles built in the Mormon Culture Region were constructed in the 1850s. They were large meetinghouses built for the purpose of holding large general meetings. …
