Incremental Repetition Within J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth: Shadow, Light, And Silmaril Within Mortal-Immortal Marriages, Nancy Lynn Hayes Dec 1984

Incremental Repetition Within J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth: Shadow, Light, And Silmaril Within Mortal-Immortal Marriages, Nancy Lynn Hayes

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the use of incremental repetition to emphasize points of both syntactic and thematic importance within the Middle-earth works of J.R.R. Tolkien. By studying three specific terms: shadow, light, and Silmaril, and how their meaning changes with each occurance, it is possible to see how much Tolkien's mythology owes to his syntactic structure.

Through my research, I have concluded that not only was Tolkien's use of incremental repetition deliberate, but that it was also an essential part of his skill in creating his mythology.

Ormsby Macknight Mitchel And The Railroad: A Study Of The Significance Of Lines Of Communications In The Civil War, 1861-1862, Michael Robert Terry

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes a minor campaign of the American Civil War, but one which illustrates the importance of the railroad, as a line of communications, to strategy. In the Spring of 1862, the Union Army in the west concentrated at Pittsburg Landing, in Tennessee, preparatory to an advance south on Corinth, Mississippi. General Ormsby Macknight Mitchel, in command of the Third Division of the Army of the Ohio, was given the defensive duty of safeguarding the Federal left, which included Middle Tennessee, against any Confederate threat from Chattanooga. Instead, Mitchel advanced to and captured Huntsville, Alabama.

This action provided several …

Reading Ability And Perception, Christopher J. Revis Aug 1984

Reading Ability And Perception, Christopher J. Revis

Theses and Dissertations

Skilled reading can be partly understood as a set- of interrelated component processes (Perfetti & Lesgold, 1979). The efficiency with which any one of these component pro cesses operates could limit or improve the efficient opera tion of the other component processes. However, there is some controversy over which of these component processes are important in showing differences in overall reading ability. The processes of interest in this study are those at the perceptual level. The purpose of the existing study was to examine the relationship between perceptual processes involved in reading and individual differences in reading ability among college …

Chapter 11 Reorganization: Creative Management Or An Abusive Of The System?, William R. Zilliot Jul 1984

Chapter 11 Reorganization: Creative Management Or An Abusive Of The System?, William R. Zilliot

Theses and Dissertations

Recent developments within the Bankruptcy Court system are controversial. Several of the largest corporations in the United States are currently undergoing reorganization. To some companies, Chapter 11 is the only way out of staggering debt, to others Chapter 11 is a means to stall liability suits, and to still others Chapter 11 represents a way to force wage concessions in the place of honoring union contracts. The entire Bankruptcy Court system itself has been successfully challenged as being Unconstitutional, and continues to operate only by a special dispensation from Congress.

When these developments are placed in an historical context, they …

Dedalus And Icarus: The Influence Of James Joyce On The Poetry Of Hart Crane, Ayman F. B. Hussein

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a pioneer study of the influence of James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses on Hart Crane's White Buildings. As such, it is both an influence study and a close reading of Crane's finest poems in a new light.

The first part of the essay (the introduction and the first three chapters) tackles the question of influence, the authors who helped shape Crane's literary make-up, and the extent and limitations of these influences as compared to the thorough-going influence Joyce exerted on Crane. In those chapters I examine the role played …

The Role Of Symbolic Form In The Bedtime Nature Stories Of Thornton W. Burgess, Ronald A. Royer May 1984

The Role Of Symbolic Form In The Bedtime Nature Stories Of Thornton W. Burgess, Ronald A. Royer

Theses and Dissertations

The task of this research is to examine the epistemological premises inherent in Thornton W. Burgess' nature stories for children as defined by Ernst Cassirer's philosophy of symbolic forms. Its purpose is to identify these premises, examine them in light of Cassirer's philosophy, and explore their relevance to education theory.

Burgess holds that children are characterized by their potentiality, that their interest in animals is inherent, that they instinctively sense themselves superior to animals, and that for these reasons it is possible to convey any lesson to the child through the medium of a fact-based animal story.

During the course …

Theses and Dissertations

Trouser roles are roles in opera in which women portray young men. These roles present a special problem for the singer-actor - the problem of performing a character through transvestism.

This thesis is a study of two popular trouser roles for mezzo-soprano. It addresses the general history of trouser roles and the specific characters of "Cherubino" from W. A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro and "Octavian" from R. Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier. The study analysis of these two roles incorporates the history of the characters as reflected through the development of librettos in which they appear, a character study focusing on …

The Impact Of The Mormon Migration On The Community Of Kirtland, Ohio, 1830-1839, Mark R. Grandstaff

Theses and Dissertations

In the early decades of the nineteenth-century, an era of cultural change and disorientation, many turned to revivals to displace insecure emotionalism and to insure themselves of a place in the emerging society. Others, such as the Mormons sought an all encompassing plan that would dispel confusion and restore order to a decadent society. This search led some Mormons to follow their Prophet to Kirtland, Ohio. Once in Kirtland, various sociological conflicts developed which affected how the citizens of Kirtland would perceive their Mormon neighbors. Tantamount to these conflicts was the rapidly increasing Mormon population which triggered a corresponding rise …

The Nonconformists Of Leeds In The Early Victorian Era: A Study In Social Composition, Susan L. Fales

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examined the Nonconformist denominational membership in the Borough of Leeds during the early Victorian era to determine the social composition of its members. The chapel goers of Old Dissent, represented by the Unitarians, Baptists, Independents, and the Society of Friends, and New Dissent, represented by the Wesleyan Methodists, Methodist New Connexion, Primitive Methodists and the Mormons were the basis for this study. Radicals And Immigrants: Senator William H. King's Response To Nativism, 1917-1924, Craig D. Galli

Theses and Dissertations

When Senator William Henry King took office in 1917, Utah and the nation were apprehensive about the presence of large numbers of foreign born aliens and citizens. Utah's King joined the wartime hysteria and promoted many nativistic policies directed against the foreign born population. During the post-war Red Scare he continued his crusade, concentrating on the suppression of Bolsheviks and the Industrial Workers of the World.

But when Congress passed the Immigration Act of 1924--a nativistic law designed to curtail the immigration of southern and eastern Europeans--King was the bill's only opponent from the West or South. Since anti-radicalism and …

Labor Strikes In The Columbus Textile Mills During The Summer Of 1934, James H. Creek

Theses and Dissertations

One major and three minor textile strikes occurred in Columbus, Georgia, during the summer of 1934. Each minor strike centered around issues at separate mills -- the Muscogee Manufacturing Company, the Georgia Webbing and Tape Company, and the Eagle and Phenix Mills. On September 1, a nation-wide general strike began. Eight of the twelve mills in Columbus were inoperative due to the strike, and three of the remaining four mills were forced to shut down on the second day of the strike due to the high number of strike sympathizers among their employees. Approximately 12,000 workers struck for higher wages, …
