The Effects Of Temperatures And Chemicals On The Oocysts Of Eimeria Stiedae, Charles Larry Keehner

Theses and Dissertations

A study was made of the effects of temperatures and chemicals on the unsporulated and sporulated oocysts of Eimeria stiedae. In general, oocysts were affected by temperatures lower than -10 C and above +39 C, while normal development occurred between these temperatures. Unsporulated oocysts were more tolerant to temperature extremes, as they survived up to 8 days at 39 C and 12 days at -28 C. Sporulated oocysts were killed after 24 hours storage at 39 C and 4 days at -28 C. Oocyst resistance to low temperatures was not improved if unsporulated and sporulated oocysts were conditioned before and …

The Relationship Of Physical Fitness And Social Acceptance Of Ninth Grade Girls, Hermelle Wilson Jul 1972

The Relationship Of Physical Fitness And Social Acceptance Of Ninth Grade Girls, Hermelle Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

Physical educators claim numerous attributes of their program, namely, teaching the whole person; his or her social, mental, and physical well-being. This study purports to measure the relationship of the social status in comparison with physical fitness of ninth grade girls.

The test used to measure the fitness level was the AAHPER Fitness Test. It was administered to all ninth grade girls at Jim Hill Junior High School in Minot, North Dakota. The seven items in the test battery were transformed to norms in the form of percentile scores and then averaged to obtain one fitness score for each subject. …

Thirty North Dakota school speech clinicians at the 1970 North Dakota Speech and Hearing Association Convention were presented a questionnaire survey developed for this study. Information was requested regarding their 1970-71 caseload. Results were tabulated and mean values were computed.

Results of this study indicated that articulation cases accounted for 75.8 percent or three-fourths of the clinician's caseload. It was also noted that articulation …

Adolescent 4-8 Mmpi Profiles: Prediction From A Taxonomic Class, Douglas L. Hippe May 1972

Adolescent 4-8 Mmpi Profiles: Prediction From A Taxonomic Class, Douglas L. Hippe

Theses and Dissertations

Throughout the past two decades of MMPI research minimal effort has been directed toward adolescent populations. Notable exceptions to this have been the pioneering works of Hathaway and Monachesi (1951, 1953, 1957, 1960, 1963), and the later prediction studies concerning subtypes of delinquents, emotionally disturbed adolescents and most recently, drug abusers. Characteristic of all this research was a focus on the study or demonstration of the MMPI itself and its ability to differentiate personality types that the test does in fact identify. The most frequently occurring profile type uncovered by these studies appears to have been the 4-8 configuration. Some …

A Comparison Of The Self-Concepts Of Institutionalized Delinquents, Non-Institutionalized Delinquents, And Non-Delinquents, Franklin D. Deforest May 1972

A Comparison Of The Self-Concepts Of Institutionalized Delinquents, Non-Institutionalized Delinquents, And Non-Delinquents, Franklin D. Deforest

Theses and Dissertations

On the basis of previous theorizing and empirical research, it seems that the self-concept may be a highly relevant factor in the understanding and containment of delinquent behavior. However, as Rubin (1970) has noted, there remains some doubt as to the effectiveness of existing treatment programs in promoting a change in the delinquent's self-concept structure which will be lasting and lead to a more adaptive response to the normal social environment. Therefore the present investigation proposes to show that there exist fundamental differences between the self-concepts of delinquents, both institutionalized and non-institutionalized, and non-delinquents. These differences can then be assumed …

Effects Of Repression-Sensitization, Arousal, And Sex On Physical Aggression, Richard J. Moser May 1972

Effects Of Repression-Sensitization, Arousal, And Sex On Physical Aggression, Richard J. Moser

Theses and Dissertations

In the past two decades, numerous experiments have focused on a wide variety of situational factors influencing the arousal, intensity, and direction of aggressive behavior. In contrast, few studies have considered the role of individual difference variables in producing aggression. The present study was concerned with a personality variable which theoretically should have some relevance to the expression of physical aggression. This variable was repression-sensitization (R-S) as measured'by the revised Repress ion-Sensitization Scale (Byrne, Barry, and Nelson, 1963). In an attempt to improve upon the predictive validity of R-S, defensive and nondefensive repressors were differentiated through the use of Marlowe-Crowne …

A New Method For The Preparation Of Alkylnaphthyl Ethers And Sulfides, Edward Ying-Shih Chen May 1972

A New Method For The Preparation Of Alkylnaphthyl Ethers And Sulfides, Edward Ying-Shih Chen

Theses and Dissertations

The reaction of monohalonaphthalenes with metal alkoxides and mercaptides in a solvent mixture of the corresponding alcohol and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has been studied. These reactions are convenient methods for the preparation of alkylnaphthyl ethers and sulfides. Only direct nucleophilic substitution was observed in the reactions of bromonaphthalenes with sodium methoxide and sodium nbutyl mercaptide. The reaction of fluoronaphthalene with potassium t-butoxide also proceeded by way of direct nucleophilic substitution rather than the 1,2-dehydronaphthalene intermediate as in the reactions of bromonaphthalene with potassium t-butoxide. The use of a base which is weaker than t-butoxide can change the apparent reaction mechanism …

A Taxonomic Study Of The Western Collared Lizard (Crotaphytus Collaris), Nathan M. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The marked pattern and coloration which distinguish members of Crotaphytus collaris baileyi in its western range indicated a need to compare it to the collaris-complex consisting of C.c. auriceps, C.c. baileyi, and C.c. fuscus. Thirty-two external and sixteen cranial characters were measured on preserved specimens. Blood serum proteins were compared by disc gel electrophoresis. Cluster, canonical, and discriminant analyses were used to define population characteristics and areas of intergradation. Disc electrophoresis did not reveal consistent population differences. The western range of C.c. baileyi is restricted to Central Arizona. The Great Basin form from western Arizona, western Utah, southern Idaho, southeastern …

A Critical Examination Of Oscar Wilde's The Picture Of Dorian Gray, Muriel L. Stephenson

Theses and Dissertations

In order to understand The Picture of Dorian Gray as an expression of Wile a the man, as well as Wilde the artist, it is necessary not only to compare the first version of the novel as it appeared in Lippincott1s Monthly tagazine with the later expanded version published in book form, but it is also necessary to trace the development of Wilde’s themes and symbols, tnd his use of form in his earlier work, particularly in his fairy talt 3—stories which are closely allied with Dorian Gray in the aforementimed aspects.

Wide's use of symbols to denote guilt and …

Two classes of grade nine boys were selected according to results of the Johnson Motor Educability Test. Both classes were given a pretest in general motor educability and gymnastic attitude.

The students participated in gymnastics three days in a six-day cycle for 40 minutes per day. A total of 12 classes of instruction were given. A gymnastic check list was used to record gymnastic skill …

Analysis Of An Orthogonal Grid Composed Of Straight And Circular Members, Te-Hsiung Lu May 1972

Analysis Of An Orthogonal Grid Composed Of Straight And Circular Members, Te-Hsiung Lu

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis has been written for the purpose of using the stiffness method to analyze an orthogonal grid composed of straight and circular members that is loaded perpendicular to the plane of grid. In the development of theory, each member is assumed to carry bending, torsion and shearing force, and the axial force is neglected.

It is much more complicated to derive the stiffness matrix for a circular member than that for a straight member. The stiffness matrix for a circular member is derived by using the strain energy and Castigliano's theorem while the stiffness matrix for a straight member …

Large School, Small School: The Relationship Between A College Student's High School Size And His Non Class College Activities, John A. Call May 1972

Large School, Small School: The Relationship Between A College Student's High School Size And His Non Class College Activities, John A. Call

Theses and Dissertations

Past research indicates that the number of students in a high school is related to the students' behaviors and subjective experiences. Students of small schools, vis-a-vis students of large schools (1) enter more different kinds of activities, (2) hold more responsible positions, and (3) experience more satisfactions in connection with their nonclass activities. Thus, the question was raised whether or not this higher rate of high school nonacademic achievement among students from small high schools had any more or less permanent effects on the student's college nonclass activities.

The Non Class College Setting (NCCS) Questionnaire was devised and administered to …

Analysis Of Asexual Reproduction Dugesia Dorotocephala, Harvey Dee Mecham Apr 1972

Analysis Of Asexual Reproduction Dugesia Dorotocephala, Harvey Dee Mecham

Theses and Dissertations

Genetic control of decapitation-induced fission in planaria is mediated by stimulator and inhibitor molecules. Resolution of the two factors was accomplished by filtration chromatography of whole planaria extract. The stimulator (M.W. 2500 to 3500) was purified with ion exchange chromatography and increases the multiple fission rate. The inhibitor (M.W. 20,000 to 50,000) is non-dialyzable, heat labile and is inactivated unless kept frozen. Storage at 4°C results in a loss of inhibitory capacity with a concomitant stimulator increase, suggesting a protein-stimulator complex as the inhibitor. In light of a demonstrated animal intercommunication system, the inhibitor-stimulator complex is hypothesized as part of …

Small Rodent Populations And Biomass In Three Sagebrush Communities Of Rush Valley, Utah, David W. Nichols

Theses and Dissertations

Three desert Artemisia tridentata communities in Rush Valley, Utah were trapped for small rodents during the summer of 1970 in a mark-recapture study. Population densities were estimated using several indices for each population category. Animals were weighed and rodent biomass calculated for each species throughout the summer. Populations, biomass, and other data were then analyzed to gain a better understanding of A. tridentata community types of the Great Basin. Peromyscus maniculatus, Eutamias minimus, and Reithrodontomys megalotis were common to area 1. Peromyscus maniculatus, E. minimus, and Perognathus parvus were common to areas 2 and 3. The peak estimated standing crops …
