Use Of Chlorine Dioxide To Remove Fish Pathogens From Garrison Diversion Water, Wayne C. Hustoft
Theses and Dissertations
This report considers the use of chlorine dioxide as an alternate disinfectant for the removal of biota from Garrison Diversion water. Laboratory testing has shown that chlorine may not be an acceptable disinfectant because it can produce carcinogens from side reactions with constituents found in natural surface waters.
This study used Lake Sakakawea water collected at the Snake Creek Pumping Station located on the eastern shore. Water samples were of direct filtration effluent from a laboratory scale filter column. samples were gathered at several different turbidity levels. The "DPD" method, as published in "Standard Methods for the Analysis of Water …
The Use Of Transition Metal Complexes For The Construction Of Unusual Metal-Modified Phosphorus Linkages Between Nucleosides., Theresa Jo Schmaltz
The Use Of Transition Metal Complexes For The Construction Of Unusual Metal-Modified Phosphorus Linkages Between Nucleosides., Theresa Jo Schmaltz
Theses and Dissertations
Oligonucleotides based on methyl phosphonate linkages between nucleoside units have been of particular interest as anti-sense molecules for inhibiting mRNA function. The focus of our research has been on the development of new construction techniques for anti-sense oligonucleotides. Specifically we have been investigating new methods for generating iron and cobalt-modified linkages in oligonucleotides during the course of automated synthesis. We have found that (dicarbonyl)($\eta\sp5$-cyclopentadienyl)($\eta\sp2$-ethylene)iron reacts with 5$\sp\prime$-O-dimethoxytritylnucleoside 3$\sp\prime$-phosphite esters to yield (dicarbonyl)($\eta\sp5$-cyclopentadienyl)iron(ethyl)phosphonates. These phosphonates appear to be stable to the conditions commonly used to construct oligonucleotides by phosphoramidite methodology. This chemistry has been extended to the formation of a dimer on …

The Synthesis Of Fluorinated Analogs Of Nucleic Acid Components., Daniel Joseph Swartling
Theses and Dissertations
The overall objective of this research was to find methods for incorporating CF$\sb2$ groups into nucleosides in order to obtain biologically active molecules. The nucleoside analogs were designed to be inhibitors of DNA synthesis and to block viral replication. Particular emphasis was directed toward analogs with the potential to inhibit HTLV-III encoded reverse transcriptase. The specific objectives were, (a) to find ways to replace each of the deoxyribose oxygens by the isosteric-isopolar CF$\sb2$ group, and (b) to replace the 2$\sp\prime$-CH$\sb2$ and 3$\sp\prime$-CHOH groups by a CF$\sb2$ group. Emphasis was placed on a detailed investigation of the introduction of the CF$\sb2$ …

Algal Response To A Thermal Effluent : Study Of A Power Station On The Provo River, Utah, Usa, Lorin E. Squires
Theses and Dissertations
The effect of a thermal effluent on the attached algae of the Provo River, Utah, USA, was studied from 1975 to 1977. Data for macroscopic and microscopic algae were collected and analyzed. Diatoms, Cladophora glomerata, and Hydrurus foetidus dominated the flora. The thermal effluent significantly affected the algal flora in a section of river 100 to 135 meters long immediately below the discharge point. Cladophora growth was increased and Hydrurus was absent in this area. In addition, diatom production was often higher and diversity lower than in the rest of the river. Community structure was unique from all other adjacent …
Environmental Interaction In Summer Algal Communities Of Utah Lake, Mark C. Whiting
Environmental Interaction In Summer Algal Communities Of Utah Lake, Mark C. Whiting
Theses and Dissertations
Utah Lake is a shallow eutrophic lake located in central Utah. It is characterized by high nutrient and silt loads and by large algal blooms in late summer and early fall. Phytoplankton samples and environmental data were taken from June through August 1974. Phytoplankton species were identified and then quantified in a Palmer counting cell. Environmental continuum theory was employed to describe algal succession and regression analysis was used to discover interactions between algal communities and the environment. Phytoplankton communities in June were characterized by high species diversity. As the lake environment became stressed in late summer due to higher …

Biological Studies On Cryptobia Atraria Sp.N. (Kinetoplastida: Cryptobiidae) In Fishes From The Sevier River Drainage, Utah, J. Stephen Cranney
Theses and Dissertations
Fish culture for both food and sport utilization has been greatly increasing throughout the world. The editor of Fish Farming Industries (1973) predicted an increase by 1977 in the United States of 83% for catfish producers, 49% for trout farmers, and 91% for bait dealers. Concomitant with the renewed interest in fish culture has been a corresponding need to further understand fish diseases.

High School Students Achievement Of College Level Work Through The Phase Achievement System (Pas), Dwight D. Lassen
Theses and Dissertations
Senior high school students in a Human Biology course were given college level work through the Phase Achievement System (PAS), a biology course at Brigham Young University (BYU). Statistical analysis showed significant growth in high school student learning through the PAS. When ability to work with PAS was measured, significant differences between the high school and college groups were not evident. A high percentage of college and high school students dropped out of the PAS, probably becasue students could fail at the PAS without experiencing academic failure.

The Biology And Food Habits Of Typhlodromus Mcgregori Chant (Acarina: Phytoseiidae), Brian A. Croft
Theses and Dissertations
Phytoseiid mites were first studied from an economic standpoint by Parrott et al. (1906), who described the value of Seius pomi Koch in controlling the pear leaf blister mite Eriophyes pyri (Pgst.). The taxonomic and biological studies of Garman (1948), Nesbitt (1951), and Chant ( 1959) stimulated additional interest in phytoseiids as predators, and in recent years they have been studied rather extensively as biological control agents of phytophagous mites.

Triatoma Infestans As An Experimental And Natural Vector Of Rauscher Murine Leukemia, Mary Frances Bobo
Theses and Dissertations
The reduviid bug, Triatoma infestans, was Investigated as a possible vector of Rauscher murine leukemia, since these insects are closely associated in nature as inhabitants of rodent burrows.
The effect of triatomid ingestion of leukemic blood was tested by maintaining insects fed on leukemic mice for various periods, and then injecting whole-insect homogenates into test mice. The viremic period for mice injected with Rauscher virus was determined by inoculating a large group of mice and sacrificing them over an 18-day period. Blood and spleen preparations were assayed for presence of virus by inoculating test mice. Biological and mechanical transmission was …
