Effect Of Harvest Endpoint On Carcass Composition, Muscle Profiling, And Sensory Characteristics Of Male Boer And Kiko Goats, Christine Marie Leick
Effect Of Harvest Endpoint On Carcass Composition, Muscle Profiling, And Sensory Characteristics Of Male Boer And Kiko Goats, Christine Marie Leick
Theses and Dissertations
With increasing meat goat production in the United States, it is necessary to examine carcass composition and quality parameters of goats at various stages of growth. In this study, intact male Boer and Kiko Goats (n = 48) were harvested after 0, 4, 8, or 12 wk on feed. Increased feeding duration led to increased final live and carcass weight, and increased dressing percent. Leg and shoulder circumferences and body wall thickness increased, but 12th rib fat and Longissimus muscle area did not change across all feeding durations. Percent carcass fat increased and percent bone decreased, but percent muscle did …

Evaluation Of An Urban Environmental Education Program To Assess Attitudes And Knowledge Of High School Students Toward White-Tailed Deer, Jessica Lynn Tegt
Theses and Dissertations
The main objective of this study was to establish a universally functional evaluation process for environmental education (EE) materials that can increase appropriate educational program application and resultant efficacy among users of all skill levels and disciplines, specifically those wildlife-related. Additionally, this research investigated capability of an EE program to alter preconceived high school student attitudes and knowledge toward urban white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) across varying demographics. I evaluated systematically a pre-produced urban wildlife classroom program, Living with White-tailed Deer (LWWTD), and measured student understanding of associated deer issues pre- and post-program. Using a detailed framework based upon the Guidelines …
Deoxygenation Catalysis On Titania For Renewable Fuel Applications, Prashant Reuben Daggolu
Deoxygenation Catalysis On Titania For Renewable Fuel Applications, Prashant Reuben Daggolu
Theses and Dissertations
This research studies the use of class=SpellE>titania (titanium dioxide, TiO2) as a catalyst for deoxygenation of class=SpellE>syngas derived oxygenates. These oxygenates are formed as byproducts when biomass derived syngas (CO & H2) is converted to ethanol on Rhodium or Molybdenum based catalysts. Conversion of these oxygenates to hydrocarbon would enhance the viability of class=SpellE>syngas to gasoline technology. This study revealed that class=SpellE>titania can indeed be used to convert syngas derived oxygenates to hydrocarbon at high temperature and pressure. Acetone condensation to mesitylene was studied very closely. The study revealed that the acid-base dual nature of class=SpellE …
The Evaluation Of Distillers Dried Grains With Solubles (Ddgs) As An Alternative Feed Ingredient In Poultry Diets, Robert Earl Loar
The Evaluation Of Distillers Dried Grains With Solubles (Ddgs) As An Alternative Feed Ingredient In Poultry Diets, Robert Earl Loar
Theses and Dissertations
In times of economic hardship, everyone must find ways to adapt, and the poultry industry is no exception. The majority of the cost in an integrated poultry operation is feeding the birds. Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) has been around for decades as a by-product of the beverage industry and more recently as a co-product of the ethanol industry. Over the past decade, there has been a dramatic increase in the production of DDGS from U.S. ethanol biorefineries, making the co-product a very economical choice. DDGS have not held a common place in the poultry industry for long though, …
Responses Of Butterfly And Forb Communities To Management Of Semi-Natural Grassland Buffers, Jolie Goldenetz Dollar
Responses Of Butterfly And Forb Communities To Management Of Semi-Natural Grassland Buffers, Jolie Goldenetz Dollar
Theses and Dissertations
Conversion of natural grasslands for agricultural uses and intensification of agricultural production has been a major cause of natural ecosystem fragmentation and biodiversity loss. Diversifying agricultural landscapes by adding semi-natural grasslands can potentially help couple agricultural production (i.e., providing food, fiber, and energy to a growing human population) with environmental stewardship, enhancing ecosystem health, and increasing biodiversity. To ensure long-term ecological benefits of buffers and to maintain them as suitable habitat for prairie-associated species, periodic disturbance is required to keep buffers in an early-successional grassland plant community. In this dissertation, I fill knowledge gaps about biodiversity of semi-natural grassland buffers …
Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species In Glioblastoma Multiforme Microsatellite Instability, Kortney Lynnette Wilkinson-Busha
Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species In Glioblastoma Multiforme Microsatellite Instability, Kortney Lynnette Wilkinson-Busha
Theses and Dissertations
Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is an extremely aggressive and almost always fatal brain tumor. GBM literature indicates defective mismatch repair (MMR) mechanisms are not involved in GBM tumorigenesis as in other tumors, and instigating mechanisms of GBM tumorigenesis remain unclear. GBM and neural progenitor (NPR) cells were exposed to three concentrations of H2O2 (0, 0.5, and 1.0 μM), cultured, and then harvested 0, 2, 4, and 6 days post-exposure; DNA from cells was amplified with microsatellite primers, investigating whether or not H2O2 exposure affected microsatellite instability (MSI) in target sequences. Three out of six markers showed significant MSI in the H2O2-exposed …
Nestling Provisioning Of Dickcissels In Native Warm-Season Grass Field Buffers, Kristina Lynne Baker
Nestling Provisioning Of Dickcissels In Native Warm-Season Grass Field Buffers, Kristina Lynne Baker
Theses and Dissertations
Grassland birds must have accessible, nutritional prey for nestlings which Conservation Reserve Program practices like CP33—Habitat Buffers for Upland Birds may provide. In 2008—2009, I monitored dickcissel nests in and around CP33 buffers at a farm in north-central Mississippi using video cameras to capture provisioning activities. I simultaneously observed foraging flights and measured distances traveled from nests. Orthopterans were the most commonly chosen prey, and dickcissels brought larger prey items when chicks were older. But, other changes in provisioning were not significantly related to nest age as I hypothesized. Also contrary to my initial hypotheses, provisioning at nests within buffers …
Oxidative Stress Induces Dna Strand Breaks May Lead To Genomic Instability In Ovarian Tumorigenesis, Harold-Humberto Moreno-Ortiz
Oxidative Stress Induces Dna Strand Breaks May Lead To Genomic Instability In Ovarian Tumorigenesis, Harold-Humberto Moreno-Ortiz
Theses and Dissertations
Oxidative stress (OS) occurs when DNA repair mechanisms are overcome by the amount of single and double strand DNA breaks caused by an accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Genomic instability (GI) by microsatellite instability (MSI) accumulation is characterized by changes in DNA single tandem repeats (STR) as a direct result of ROS. Deregulation of DNA repair and tumor suppressor pathways have been described as causes of tumor progression and metastasis. Studies in mammals have focused on GI and the implications of increased mutation frequency due to accumulation of MSI leading to development of diseases, including infertility and cancer. Ovarian …

Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if the animal bite prevention and zoonotic disease program in Pet Awareness With Students (P.A.W.S.) is an effective educational program for younger elementary children. An educational program was delivered and student learning was determined through a pretest and post-test. This program utilized the Classroom Performance System (CPS) to collect responses from first grade students. Responses were collected and compared to the second grade participants who used paper methodology. It was determined that these age groups had little knowledge of animal bites and zoonotic disease. Gender was not related to either pretest or …
Wildlife Habitat Quality In Southern Mississippi 8 Years After Intensive Pine Plantation Establishment, Tamara Nicole Campbell
Wildlife Habitat Quality In Southern Mississippi 8 Years After Intensive Pine Plantation Establishment, Tamara Nicole Campbell
Theses and Dissertations
I evaluated effects of 5 pine plantation establishment regimes 6 – 8 years postestablishment on loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) growth, vegetation characteristics, nutritional carrying capacity for white-tailed deer, and breeding birds in the Lower Coastal Plain of Mississippi. Treatments combined mechanical site preparation (MSP), chemical site preparation (CSP), and herbaceous weed control (HWC) designed to represent a range of operational intensities. Chemical SP provided greater long-term control of woody competition than MSP, but did not provide significant pine growth advantage. Vegetation richness, diversity, and structure were best maintained with MSP and year 1 banded HWC. Canopy cover appears to be …
Disaster Preparedness Of Licensed Private Veterinary Practitioners In Mississippi, Kathleen Leech Ebers

Predicting The Spatial Distribution Of Forest Harvests In Mississippi From Landsat Tm Data: Accuracy And Characterization, Michael Bryan Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
Methods are needed to predict the spatial distribution pattern(s) of forest harvests to improve large-scale timber inventories through the incorporation of spatial distribution information. In this study, land cover type change detection methods were carried out using information from 1972 thru 2005 east-central Mississippi Landsat TM data to detect the spatial distribution of clearcut forest harvests. A random pattern was observed for clearcut harvests and this and other statistical data gathered in the study will be integrated into an existing forest inventory and transportation network database. The resulting harvested and forested area predictions generated by the database will assist with …
Predicting The Potential Distributions Of Major Invasive Species Using Geospatial Models In Southern Forest Lands, Yuan Tan
Theses and Dissertations
Former researches provide evidence that invasive species could alter ecosystem’s components, threaten native species and cause economic losses in southern forest lands. The objective of the project is to explore significant driving factors and develop geospatial models for monitoring, predicting and mapping the extent and conditions of major invasive species. In the study area, 16 invasive species were classified into four groups: regionally spreading species, regionally establishing species, locally spreading species and regionally colonizing species by population size and spatial characteristics. According to local Moran’s I, spatial autocorrelation existed in 16 invasive species. Autologistic model and simultaneous autoregressive model were …
Consequences Of Gis Classification Errors On Bias And Variance Of Forest Inventory Estimates, Michael Keith Crosby
Consequences Of Gis Classification Errors On Bias And Variance Of Forest Inventory Estimates, Michael Keith Crosby
Theses and Dissertations
The use of remotely sensed imagery (e.g. Landsat TM) for developing forest inventory strata has become increasingly more common in recent years as data have become more readily available. Errors are inherent with the use of this technology, either from user mis-classification of conditions represented in the imagery or due to flaws in the technology. Knowledge of these errors is important, as they can inflate the variance of inventory estimates. Forest inventory estimates from the Mississippi Institute for Forest Inventory (MIFI) were applied to determine the extent that classification errors affect volume and area estimates. Forest strata (e.g. hardwood, mixed, …

Systems Biology Modeling Of Bovine Fertility Using Proteomics, Divya Swetha Peddinti
Systems Biology Modeling Of Bovine Fertility Using Proteomics, Divya Swetha Peddinti
Theses and Dissertations
Beef and milk production industries represent the largest agricultural industries in the United States with a retail equivalent value of approximately $112 billion (USDA, 2008). Infertility is the major problem for mammalian reproduction. In the United States approximately 66% of cows are bred by Artificial Insemination (AI), but only ~50% of these inseminations result in successful pregnancies. Infertility can occur either from male factor (spermatozoon) or female factor (oocyte) and male contributes approximately 40% of cases. Infertility costs the producer approximately $5 per exposed cow for every 1% reduction in pregnancy rate. In spite of its millions of dollars in …

Influence Of Agronomic Practices In Rice (Oryza Sativa L.) And Soybean (Glycine Max L.) Production In Midsouthern Usa, Kevin Alan Dillon
Theses and Dissertations
Within Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Texas, rice acreage is rotated with soybean due to both crops’ adaptability to the clay soils of the midsouthern USA. Two row patterns, two maturity groups, and six seeding rates were examined at Stoneville, MS, in 2009-2010, with respect to soybean growth and yield produced on silt loam soil. Optimal yield for MG IV was 333,000 seed ha-1 (297,000 plants ha-1). Twin-row soybean increased seed yield 7 to 10% more than single-row due to greater LAI, NDVI, and node and pod production. Rice field experiments quantified N loss via ammonia volatilization and determined grain …

Proteins provide evidence that a given gene is expressed, and machine learning algorithms can be applied to various proteomics problems in order to gain information about the underlying biology. This dissertation applies machine learning algorithms to proteomics data in order to predict whether or not a given peptide is observable by mass spectrometry, whether a given peptide can serve as a cell penetrating peptide, and then utilizes the peptides observed through mass spectrometry to aid in the structural annotation of the chicken genome. Peptides observed by mass spectrometry are used to identify proteins, and being able to accurately predict which …
Functional Complementation Analysis Of Fungal Rtg2 Homologs In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Ercan Selcuk Unlu
Functional Complementation Analysis Of Fungal Rtg2 Homologs In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Ercan Selcuk Unlu
Theses and Dissertations
Changes in gene expression in response to mitochondrial dysfunction are mediated by components of the retrograde signaling pathway. The mitochondrial signal is recognized and transferred to the nucleus by dynamic interactions between regulatory proteins Rtg2p, Mks1p and Bmh1p. Retrograde signaling genes have been well characterized in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae but very little is known about the retrograde response of other fungi. To identify retrograde signaling proteins in other fungi, the protein sequence encoded by the S. cerevisiae RTG2 gene was used to search for fungal homologs using NCBI BlastP and the T-Coffee Multiple Sequence Alignment program. We selected …
Genetic Variation And Leprosy Distribution In Nine-Banded Armadillos, Leah Chinchilla
Genetic Variation And Leprosy Distribution In Nine-Banded Armadillos, Leah Chinchilla
Theses and Dissertations
Genetic, ecological, and environmental variation within and among populations of hosts and pathogens can influence local susceptibility of hosts and transmission rates of pathogens. These complex interactions can lead to geographic variation in the prevalence of pathogens. The interaction between leprosy and nine-banded armadillos in the southeastern U.S. provides an opportunity to examine the genetic, ecological, and environmental factors contributing to the variation in pathogen prevalence on a large geographic scale. Using genotypic data for loci associated with the immune response to leprosy and for anonymous loci, we have assessed the population structure of armadillo populations across the southern U.S. …
Genomic Instability May Be A Signal Of Human Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation, Clara Ines Esteban-Perez
Genomic Instability May Be A Signal Of Human Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation, Clara Ines Esteban-Perez
Theses and Dissertations
Embryonic stem (ES) cells have the ability to maintain pluripotency and self-renewal during in vitro maintenance, which is a key to their clinical applications. ES cells are a model in developmental biology studies due to their potential to differentiate in vitro. Understanding critical pathways of pluripotency, self-renewal, and differentiation during early embryonic development is important for the evaluation of the therapeutic potential of ES cells because of their ability for tumor transformation due to genetic and epigenetic instability acquired during in vitro culture maintenance. Single tandem repeats are sequences of DNA that have been implicated in the deregulation of gene …

Ross × Ross 708 eggs were injected with commercial diluent containing supplemental L-carnitine at 8, 16, or 32 mg/100 μL concentrations using an automated multi-egg injector. After hatching, 1,080 male and female broiler chicks were distributed into 90 pens with chicks at each of the injected concentrations receiving feed that was or was not supplemented with 50 ppm of L-carnitine. Treatments did not affect incubation time or hatchability of fertilized eggs. Birds fed supplemental L-carnitine and injected in ovo with L-carnitine had lower body weight and ate less feed. The same birds exhibited a reduction in feed conversion compared to …
Can Interior Design Erase Architecture? The Integration Of A Pet Care Facility Into The Fan, Erin Brunner
Can Interior Design Erase Architecture? The Integration Of A Pet Care Facility Into The Fan, Erin Brunner
Theses and Dissertations
Many urban pet care and boarding facilities tend to rest on the outskirts of the community, in quasi-industrial and commercial areas. Far from the homes of the people who would use their services, the locations of these facilities are inconvenient for most. Students and the employed have trouble making time in their hectic schedules to give their pets the attention and activity they need to be healthy, and often, pets are left alone, sedentary, for a substantial portion of the day. But what if there was a pet care facility that was within walking distance from home that could provide …
Phytoremediation Of Pcb Contaminated Soil: Effectiveness And Regulatory Policy, Nathan Pinsker
Phytoremediation Of Pcb Contaminated Soil: Effectiveness And Regulatory Policy, Nathan Pinsker
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this paper was to combine available peer-reviewed literature on PCB phytoremediation and make direct comparisons using ANCOVA statistics in order to determine if and what plants are presently a viable option for the remediation of PCB contaminated soils. Pumpkin (Curbita pepo cv Howden) consistently had the top root and shoot concentrations, as well as total plant accumulation. Their consistency shows that they can be reliable in the field and the most viable option. Tall fescue and sedge were also top contenders. Due to the small sample size for many plants and accounting for several confounding variables, very …
Discriminative Stimulus Properties Of 3-Substituent Rimonabant Analogs, D. Matthew Walentiny
Discriminative Stimulus Properties Of 3-Substituent Rimonabant Analogs, D. Matthew Walentiny
Theses and Dissertations
Cannabinoid agonists (e.g., THC) dose-dependently decrease locomotor activity and body temperature and produce antinociception and catalepsy. Drugs that produce this tetrad of effects within a limited dose range are likely to function as CB1 receptor agonists. A structure activity relationship study from our laboratory investigating analogs of the CB1 antagonist rimonabant revealed that certain alterations in the 3-substituent of rimonabant’s pyrazole core conferred agonist-like properties in the tetrad. Interestingly, these effects were present in CB1 -/- mice, and were not reversed by rimonabant in wild-type mice. The present study evaluated two novel 3-substituent rimonabant analogs, O-6629 and O-6658 in the …
Distinct T Cell Clones Are Associated With Graft-Versus-Host Disease (Gvhd), And Potentially Graft-Versus-Tumor (Gvt), Responses Following Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation, Jennifer Berrie
Theses and Dissertations
In patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) with HLA-identical donors, genetic polymorphisms result in a mismatch between donors and recipients in their minor histocompatibility antigens (mHAgs), and tumors may also express tumor-associated antigens (TAA) that may not be abundantly present in the donors. Donor T cells can recognize such mHAgs and TAAs as foreign antigens and generate an objective response against hematologic malignancies in a graft-versus-tumor (GVT) effect. However, a major side effect of HSCT occurs when donor T cells are alloreactive against the recipients’ normal cells, leading to graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). The ability to identify T cell clones …
Sulfatide Is Required For Organization Of The Paranode In The Myelinated Axon In The Peripheral Nervous System, Eva Kwong
Theses and Dissertations
Myelin facilitates the timely, efficient conduction of action potentials along axons. Made by Schwann cells (SCs) in the PNS, myelin is unique in that it is composed of a high percentage of lipids, particularly galactolipids. Sulfatide, one such galactolipid, is made by cerebroside sulfotransferase (CST) and has been shown to play a role in organizing paranodal domains in myelinated axons. However less is known regarding the involvement of sulfatide in the establishment and maintenance of the node, of particular interest as it is responsible for the potentiation of action potentials along the axon. Using immunohistochemical and, to a lesser extent, …
