Comparison Of Various Intermittent Fasting Dietary Interventions To The Ketogenic Dietary Interventions And Its Effects In Mitigating Hunger In Obese Adults, Aston Earl Francis Jr
Comparison Of Various Intermittent Fasting Dietary Interventions To The Ketogenic Dietary Interventions And Its Effects In Mitigating Hunger In Obese Adults, Aston Earl Francis Jr
Theses and Dissertations
There have been many dietary strategies that can be used for fat loss and the most recent popular dietary interventions have been intermittent fasting and the ketogenic diet. Intermittent fasting (IF) dietary interventions and the ketogenic diet (KD) are popular diets that claim to promote weight loss which has also been speculated to have enhanced benefits than caloric restriction. Although these dietary strategies are growing in popularity, it is unclear if the intervention can manage hunger, which may increase adherence. The purpose of this paper is to systematically review the literature on the impact of IF protocols compared to KD …
Csi Botany: Dna Barcode “Fingerprints” Identify Cryptic Urban Flora, Luis R. Vega
Csi Botany: Dna Barcode “Fingerprints” Identify Cryptic Urban Flora, Luis R. Vega
Theses and Dissertations
As short genomic markers, DNA barcodes can play a role in conservation by identifying cryptic species and hybrids when morphological approaches fall short. Here we present our application of barcodes to the identities of two wetland taxa as part of an ongoing floristic inventory of Van Cortlandt Park (VCP), Bronx, NY. Previous barcode data by Marriott et al. (2018) identified the VCP lake water lily as the exotic Nymphaea alba, rather than the native N. odorata as historically described. In addition, cattails in the park were historically identified as the native Typha latifolia and the exotic T. angustifolia …
How Technology Mediated Social Learning During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Phenomenological Case Study, Rashi Seth-Parmar
How Technology Mediated Social Learning During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Phenomenological Case Study, Rashi Seth-Parmar
Theses and Dissertations
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools in California were forced to shut their doors to students and staff during spring semester 2020. The school closures forced teachers to migrate their lessons to online platforms and forced students to learn using various online modalities. Students no longer had the traditional access to their teachers, administrators, or peers, which caused an imbalance in their social learning. This phenomenological qualitative study offers administrators and teachers best practices in fostering student social learning while utilizing distance learning or online learning specifically for K-12 students. The best practices are derived from the lived experiences of …
Learning Through Business Unit Failure: A Study Of Individuals And Mid-Level Managers, Corinna Calhoun
Learning Through Business Unit Failure: A Study Of Individuals And Mid-Level Managers, Corinna Calhoun
Theses and Dissertations
Research on business failure focuses primarily on entrepreneurs and largely ignores individuals and mid-level managers who comprise most corporate populations. This study aimed to mitigate this gap by exploring how 15 individuals and mid-level managers working in a Fortune 50 technology company experienced failure and how their beliefs impacted their experience and learnings. Qualitative interview data were analyzed using a schema from the literature. The results suggested that emotional regulation, belief in personal agency, and separation of self from work supported learning and positive outcomes. Future research would create deeper insights into the social impacts on emotions and sensemaking and …
An Examination Of Leading Through Change Using Snyder’S Hope Theory And Lewin’S 3-Step Model, Scott E. Sorensen
An Examination Of Leading Through Change Using Snyder’S Hope Theory And Lewin’S 3-Step Model, Scott E. Sorensen
Theses and Dissertations
Never has the world experienced such rapid change, and the environment in which organizations operate necessitates increased change capability and organizational agility (Argyris, 1991). Strebel (1996) found success rates for change initiatives in Fortune 1000 companies ranged from a low of 20% to a high of 50%. Later studies would substantiate Strebel’s (1996) findings, claiming that, on average, failure rates of transformational change initiatives approach 70% (Beer & Nohria, 2000; Sirkin et al., 2005). Suppose this is so, and companies wish to thrive in such a dynamic environment. A fundamental understanding of why change efforts fail and how to drive …

Socially assistive robots (SAR) are autonomous machines equipped with sensors and software that allow them to interact socially with humans. SAR robots are commonly used in healthcare settings to provide patients with non-clinical support, such as conversation and emotional companionship. SARs can also deliver reminders, monitor vital signs, and provide educational information about health conditions or medications. Researchers have studied SAR applications in detail. Additionally, there has been prior research on SAR where users' sociodemographic factors and technology acceptance were studied. But even though the backbone of SAR is an advanced technology, no known research has been done on users' …
Activity Levels Of Different Cell Types In An Epileptogenic Model Of Cortical Microgyria: A Cfos Investigation, Peter F. Lamothe
Activity Levels Of Different Cell Types In An Epileptogenic Model Of Cortical Microgyria: A Cfos Investigation, Peter F. Lamothe
Theses and Dissertations
A large percentage of individuals with intractable epilepsies have an accompanying cortical malformation, the underlying cellular mechanisms of which are not fully understood. In an animal model for one such malformation, polymicrogyria, epileptogenesis occurs most easily in a region of tissue just adjacent to the microgyria termed the paramicrogyral region (PMR). Previous studies implicate somatostatin containing interneurons (SOM) as a potential contributor to this pathology, and show increased excitation of SOM in the PMR. We hypothesis that SOM are more active in the PMR when compared to SOM within the homologous region of the control cortex. In addition to this …
Formation Of Vasculogenic Mimicry: Role Of Melanoma Differentiation Associated Gene-9 In Human Melanoma, Jinkal Shah
Formation Of Vasculogenic Mimicry: Role Of Melanoma Differentiation Associated Gene-9 In Human Melanoma, Jinkal Shah
Theses and Dissertations
Malignant melanoma (MM) is the most aggressive skin cancer and the most frequent skin disorder in Caucasians. MM is associated with aggressive and progressive disease states, leading to major cancer-related morbidity and mortality. Recent investigations identify an alternative pathway -vasculogenic mimicry (VM), which is considered a cancer hallmark that can independently facilitate tumor neovascularization by the formation of fluid-conducting and vascular endothelial cells. MM cells undergoing VM can dedifferentiate into numerous cellular phenotypes and acquire endothelial-like features, resulting in the formation of the de novo matrix-rich vascular-like networks, such as plasma and red blood cells. The co-generation of endothelial cells, …
Exploring The Relationship Between The Epigenome And Metabolism In Mycn-Amplified Neuroblastoma, Krista M. Dalton
Exploring The Relationship Between The Epigenome And Metabolism In Mycn-Amplified Neuroblastoma, Krista M. Dalton
Theses and Dissertations
High risk neuroblastoma (NB) is responsible for nearly 15% of all cancer related deaths in the pediatric population. The transcription factor MYCN is the most studied oncogene in NB, automatically conferring high-risk and has been found to be difficult to target. One way that MYCN amplification in NB functions to support tumorigenicity is through altered metabolism, satisfying the demand for rapid proliferation by increasing the nutrient flux through biosynthetic pathways. We performed an unbiased screen on select metabolic targeted therapy combinations and correlated sensitivity with over 20 subsets of cancer. We found that MYCN-amplified NB is hypersensitive to the …
Dynamics Of Flood Flow In Red River Basin, Vida Atashi
Dynamics Of Flood Flow In Red River Basin, Vida Atashi
Theses and Dissertations
In recent decades, flooding has become a major issue in many areas of the Upper Midwest. Many rivers and streams in the region had considerable increases in mean annual peak flows during this period, which was driven by a combination of natural factors including discharge synchrony with the spring thaw, ice jams, glacial lake plain, and a decrease in gradient downstream. The Red River of the North is a prominent river in the United States and Canada's Upper Midwest. It flows from its headwaters in Minnesota and North Dakota to Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba. The river is well-known for its …

Evaluating The Impact Of Electricity And Electron Movement On The Electric Grid From Distributed Generation, Cooper R. Wade
Theses and Dissertations
The United States’ electric grid is currently undergoing a monumental energy transition involving the incorporation of new fuel sources, generation types, and operational modifications. Since 1920, the U.S. energy collective has been overseen by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), where during this tenure they have pursued the direct regulation of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). This reasoning has been utilized over 300 times in federal cases and proceedings as the adoption rate of DERs has increased, which is based upon the language allowing the federal regulation of electricity based upon the flow of electrons. This is based solely upon the …

Psychotherapy provides essential coping mechanisms and strategies for children who are diagnosed with cancer, as they experience the extraordinary burden of physical, emotional, and mental strains. While many medical advancements have been made within the past few decades, progress related to psychotherapy for pediatric cancer patients has not been commensurate, evidenced by the limited current literature. Given the sparsity of relevant research, it is presently difficult to compare and evaluate the various psychotherapeutic interventions available for pediatric oncology patients. Additionally, there are significant challenges in providing psychotherapeutic care for patients and their families, including lack of consistency, disruption of care, …
The Impact Of Non-Affirming Christian Secondary Schools On Students Who Identify As Lgbtqia+: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Alexis C. Schneider
The Impact Of Non-Affirming Christian Secondary Schools On Students Who Identify As Lgbtqia+: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Alexis C. Schneider
Theses and Dissertations
In the United States, nearly 100,000 LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual) students attend non-affirming religious secondary schools yearly (Green et al., 2019; Institute of Education Sciences [IES] & National Center for Education Statistics [NCES], 2019a, 2019b). Because organized religion can have both beneficial and harmful outcomes on LGBTQIA+ youth (Wolff, 2016) and a secondary school environment has a significant impact on a student’s sense of academic success and well-being (Forber-Pratt et al., 2021), it is essential to understand and implement best practices that support LGBTQIA+ students in non-affirming religious secondary schools. Using phenomenological methods within a qualitative …

Molecular Target And Circuitry Underlying The Preclinical Effects Of Psychedelics In Models Of Opioid Use Disorder, Alaina M. Jaster
Molecular Target And Circuitry Underlying The Preclinical Effects Of Psychedelics In Models Of Opioid Use Disorder, Alaina M. Jaster
Theses and Dissertations
Opioid use disorder (OUD), like other substance use disorders (SUD), is characterized by maladaptive behavioral allocation away from other rewarding aspects of life following prolonged use, as well as large rates of relapse. While pharmacotherapies exist for OUD, they tend to only target the opioid receptors rather than the underlying mechanisms behind the maladaptive behaviors. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) is involved in modulation of cravings and regulation of motivational reward-related behaviors, thought to be due to a top-down processing method of external and internal stimuli. Serotonin 2A receptors (5-HT2AR) are widespread throughout the brain and most densely populate layer …
Contribution Of Metabolic Cell Swelling On Microcirculatory Perfusion In Septic Shock, Charles E. Payne
Contribution Of Metabolic Cell Swelling On Microcirculatory Perfusion In Septic Shock, Charles E. Payne
Theses and Dissertations
Sepsis, a systemic immunological response that leads to organ-dysfunction, the development of septic shock, and death has mortality rate of 15-25%. A subset of sepsis, septic shock, has an in-hospital mortality rate of 30-50%. Sepsis and its treatment are the most expensive healthcare problem in the United States with the US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality estimating annual costs over $20 billion. Hypoxia experienced in septic shock induces metabolic cell and tissue swelling leading to further microcirculatory dysfunction and poor tissue perfusion. Reversing metabolic cell swelling corrects these perfusion defects. Two models were used in rats to induce septic …
Dune Building Dynamics Impact Cross-Island Connectivity And Barrier Island Characteristics, Alexander Sabo
Dune Building Dynamics Impact Cross-Island Connectivity And Barrier Island Characteristics, Alexander Sabo
Theses and Dissertations
Located at the land-sea interface, barrier islands are important protective features that reduce wave energy and erosion from mainland areas. Further, barrier islands provide habitat for many different organisms and serve as popular areas for recreation and tourism. As sandy landforms, barrier islands are easily disturbed, but often recover after disturbance as a result of island plant communities, specifically dune building grasses. Disturbance on barrier islands is driven by storms, tides, and overwash events. After disturbance has occurred, dune grasses colonize the dunes allowing for dune building and habitat restoration. On the Virginia barrier islands, there are three dominant dune …
Pre-Clinical Trials With Precision-Medicine Based Therapeutics In Basal-Like Patient-Derived Xenografts, David C. Boyd
Pre-Clinical Trials With Precision-Medicine Based Therapeutics In Basal-Like Patient-Derived Xenografts, David C. Boyd
Theses and Dissertations
Breast cancer treatments have improved over time, but the diseases seeing the most benefit from these improvements have the estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, or are positive for HER2. Basal-like breast cancer tends to not have these biomarkers, which necessitates their treatment to be traditional, untargeted therapeutics which are less effective and tend to have harsh adverse effect profiles – this is an important unmet need. These studies utilize a variety of techniques, including tissue culture, viability assays, high-throughput screening, in vivo drug treatments and imaging, pathway analyses, molecular techniques such as Western blot, antibody arrays, RNA sequencing, sc RNA sequencing, …
Intrinsic Efficacy As A Determinant Of Opioid Effectiveness In Treatment Of Pain-Depressed Behavior, Edna Santos
Intrinsic Efficacy As A Determinant Of Opioid Effectiveness In Treatment Of Pain-Depressed Behavior, Edna Santos
Theses and Dissertations
Pain is a major public health concern that is commonly associated with behavioral depression, and a major goal in pain treatment is alleviation of pain-related behavioral depression. High-efficacy mu opioid receptor (MOR) agonists (e.g. fentanyl, morphine, oxycodone) are effective to treat pain, but their use is limited by side effects that not only endanger the patient but may also obscure analgesic rescue of pain-depressed behavior. The ongoing epidemic of opioid abuse and overdose deaths has stimulated research to discover non-opioid alternative analgesics; however, this search neglects the clinical potential of safer intermediate-efficacy MOR agonists (e.g. buprenorphine). The objective of the …

Structural biology has become an indispensable tool for determining the 3D structures of proteins for a comprehensive understanding of their functions on molecular level, and for elucidating binding cavities that can be targeted for structure-based drug discovery. X-ray crystallography, the most widely used structural biology technique was utilized in addition to other techniques to: (1) understand the role of pyridoxal reductase (PDXI) in pyridoxal 5’-phosphate (PLP) homeostasis; (2) Determine whether the putative PLP binding protein, YggS, is involved in PLP homeostasis; (3) Elucidate the molecular basis underlying Agrobacterium receptor VirA pathogenesis; and (4) Elucidate the structural basis of aromatic aldehydes …
Unraveling The Consequence Of Adult Onset Sulfatide Depletion: Its Implications In Myelin And Axonal Heath In The Context Of Neurodegenerative Disease, Elizabeth Dustin
Unraveling The Consequence Of Adult Onset Sulfatide Depletion: Its Implications In Myelin And Axonal Heath In The Context Of Neurodegenerative Disease, Elizabeth Dustin
Theses and Dissertations
Multiple Sclerosis is an immune mediated disease of the CNS. MS is diagnosed through detection of demyelinated regions. However, recent studies demonstrate that Normal Appearing White Matter (NAWM) contains substantial pathology. One such pathology observed in the NAWM is the reduction of sulfatide. The proper stoichiometry of lipids in myelin acts to maintain rapid conduction velocity, provide trophic support to the neuron, and protect the axon from degeneration. We previously characterized a mouse lacking sulfatide’s synthesizing enzyme, CST through constitutive gene disruption and demonstrate that sulfide is required for proper stability of the myelin sheath. However, since MS is typically …

Quantitative Changes In Hippocampal Ccr5+ Microglia With The Administration Of Maraviroc (Mvc): Does Sex Matter?, Ama S. Boakye-Agyei
Theses and Dissertations
Human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) has been greatly studied in recent decades. Combined anti-retroviral therapy (cART), the development of drug treatments such as maraviroc, and the wider availability of support for those in resource-rich environments have been instrumental in improving the prospects of people living with HIV (PLWH). It is well- documented that PLWH can suffer from a host of cognitive deficits collectively known as HIV- associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). Moreover, the role of biological sex in the development of HAND and other cognitive deficits is still being studied. C-C chemokine receptor type 5 (CCR5) is one of the two …
Characterization Of Sphingosine-1-Phosphate Receptor Expression And Functionality In Niemann-Pick Type C Disease, Nathaniel-David I. Dizon
Characterization Of Sphingosine-1-Phosphate Receptor Expression And Functionality In Niemann-Pick Type C Disease, Nathaniel-David I. Dizon
Theses and Dissertations
Niemann Pick Type C (NPC) is a recessively inherited lysosomal storage disorder for which there is currently no major treatment. It is widely acknowledged that the pathology of NPC is caused by a trafficking defect which leads to an accumulation of cholesterol in the late endosome/lysosome compartment (LE/L). In addition to cholesterol, multiple species of sphingolipids are observed to accumulate as well in the LE/L. Specifically, an accumulation of sphingosine is observed in NPC disease and is likely attributed to the decreased activity of an enzyme, sphingosine kinase 1 (SphK1), which is responsible for phosphorylating sphingosine into an important pro-survival …
Irene Cox, Lindsey Arturo
Irene Cox, Lindsey Arturo
Theses and Dissertations
This document explores the question of “Who is Irene Cox?” as a jumping off point for creating an artwork which navigates online information landscapes and their logics circa 2023. By using thirteen unique but similar found paintings of the same floral still life by an artist named “Irene Cox” I create a visually meandering, absurd, haunting, and comical pathway for thinking through who exactly is Irene Cox via the internet. How such a question is even asked becomes the art in which a myriad of visual techniques are used to explore the nature of the question. Included in this paper …
The Hepatic Immunological Pattern Shaped By Dominant-Subdominant Cellular Interactions Creates A Collective Function Beyond The Function Of Each Cellular Constituent To Orchestrate Progression Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Nicholas J. Koelsch
Theses and Dissertations
Abundance of data on the role of inflammatory immune responses in the progression or inhibition of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has failed to offer a curative immunotherapy for HCC. This is largely because of taking reductionist approaches and missing the collective function of the hepatic immune system by focusing on specific immune cell types. To this end, we propose that focusing on the dominant-subdominant patterns of the immune cells would allow understanding of the mechanism by which a collective immune function emerges. To identify the collective immune function through a systems immunology perspective, we performed high-throughput analysis of snRNAseq data collected …
