O Silêncio Da Mulher Carioca Oitocentista E Sua Representação No Romance Naturalista Lar De Pardal Mallet, Jessyca Kimberly De Oliveira Zanetti
O Silêncio Da Mulher Carioca Oitocentista E Sua Representação No Romance Naturalista Lar De Pardal Mallet, Jessyca Kimberly De Oliveira Zanetti
Theses and Dissertations
The 19th century represents the arrival of the Portuguese royal family in Brazil and, with it, significant changes in society and the local population. A formerly reclusive member of society begins to take shape not only in public life but also within the literature: the Brazilian woman. Despite her changing social role, prevailing hygienist and medical theories of the time pointed to the lack of vocation of the nineteenth-century woman for rational matters; which in naturalism implies that these pseudo-scientific theories would be the base to dissect and explain the social pathologies of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and society at …
Utilizing Isothermal Titration Calorimetry To Measure Β-Galactosidase Activity In Dairy Products, Tyler Ronald Jarrard
Utilizing Isothermal Titration Calorimetry To Measure Β-Galactosidase Activity In Dairy Products, Tyler Ronald Jarrard
Theses and Dissertations
The dairy industry uses enzymes to make cheese, alter product flavor, and eliminate lactose. The activities of these enzymes have been measured in clear buffered solutions, but because of the limitations of spectrophotometric methods, enzyme activities have not been measured in opaque or colored dairy products where they are used. Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) can be used to determine reaction kinetics in opaque and colored solutions by measuring the heat rate from enzyme-catalyzed reactions as a function of time. This study used ITC to measure β-galactosidase activity in opaque solutions of milk, sweet whey, sweet whey permeate, acid whey, and …
Mental Health Service Preferences Among Illinois Dairy Producers: A Best-Worst Scaling Approach, Brianna Messman
Mental Health Service Preferences Among Illinois Dairy Producers: A Best-Worst Scaling Approach, Brianna Messman
Theses and Dissertations
Importance of mental health within the agricultural community is growing, especially amongst dairy farmers. With the ongoing trend of negative economic returns facing the dairy industry, there is no better time to address mental health concerns of dairy producers. The goal of this study is to gain insight into the preferred services for mental health assistance amongst Illinois dairy producers. A questionnaire was administered to Illinois dairy producers and analyzed to acquire a greater understanding of this topic. The findings from this study have the potential to assist policy makers and benefit agricultural producers. An overwhelming preference among Illinois dairy …
Real-Time Imaging And Measurement Of Compartmentalized Redox Shifts Using Novel Redox-Sensitive Biosensors: Implications In Developmental Toxicology, Brandon Mitchell Davies
Real-Time Imaging And Measurement Of Compartmentalized Redox Shifts Using Novel Redox-Sensitive Biosensors: Implications In Developmental Toxicology, Brandon Mitchell Davies
Theses and Dissertations
Glutathione (GSH) is a small antioxidant in the body and exists in large quantities compared to other antioxidants. The GSH redox state (Eh) helps developmental processes, however, when the GSH Eh is disrupted, cells may undergo significantly poor developmental pathways, possibly leading to long-lasting damages. Similarly, NADPH and Thioredoxin redox states can have a major impact on cellular function, viability, and response to both endogenous and exogenous toxicants. Subcellular, compartmentalized redox environments during normal or perturbed situations, specifically in the cytosol, mitochondria, and nucleus, are not well understood. Here, using the P19 neurogenesis model of cellular differentiation, the kinetics of …
Pausing In American English: Documenting Native English Speakers' Pausing Patterns, Ammon Hunt
Pausing In American English: Documenting Native English Speakers' Pausing Patterns, Ammon Hunt
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine more deeply the relationship between pause location and duration and its connection to clause and phrase boundaries for native English speakers (NESs). Previous research has shown pauses produced by NESs to be located at clause boundaries (Brown & Miron, 1971; Hawkins, 1971; Tavakoli, 2011), but little empirical work has been done to probe this issue further. For this research, 80 speech samples, 40 male and 40 female, were randomly selected from the International Dialects of English Archive (IDEA) representing different regions in the United States. Oral data from the read-aloud portion of …
“We Are Created Inferior To Men”: Leveraging Horsemanship To Reinforce Gender Expectations, 1830-1861, Gabrielle Marie Mccoy
“We Are Created Inferior To Men”: Leveraging Horsemanship To Reinforce Gender Expectations, 1830-1861, Gabrielle Marie Mccoy
Theses and Dissertations
Horses have played a central role in human society since 3500 BCE when humans began domesticating and riding horses in large numbers. Horses continued to be important to human society during the nineteenth century as people used horses to drive industrialization, manage plantations, and transport goods, among other uses. Although historians and anthropologists have long extolled the horse’s laboring value, this paper views the horse and horsemanship (i.e., horseback riding, horse training) in a social context. Through the examination of newspapers, fictional literature, and manuals, this paper argues that Americans used horses and horsemanship to reinforce antebellum gender expectations. Reinforcing …
Understanding The Spectrum Of Cacna1a Related Disorders: An Analysis Of Genotypes And Phenotypes In 416 Individuals, Olivia Jane Wilmarth
Understanding The Spectrum Of Cacna1a Related Disorders: An Analysis Of Genotypes And Phenotypes In 416 Individuals, Olivia Jane Wilmarth
Theses and Dissertations
Pathogenic variants in the CACNA1A gene disrupt a calcium channel expressed in the central nervous system, causing a variety of neurological and psychiatric features collectively known as CACNA1A-related disorders. Gain-offunction and loss-of-function of this channel are both well-established mechanisms of disease, but specific genotype-phenotype correlations have remained unclear. Previous research has been limited by small sample sizes, with some studies noting significant intrafamilial variation and reduced penetrance. This study aimed to collect and analyze genotypic and phenotypic data from a large sample of individuals with CACNA1A-related disorders published in the literature and in two patient cohorts. Using the …

A Cross-Sectional Analysis Of Infectious Causes Of Congenital Morbidity And Mortality In Central America: Torch, El Salvador, Mary Katherine Lynn
Theses and Dissertations
The primary goal of this dissertation was to understand the prevalence of the most regionally salient TORCH pathogens among a group of perinatal women from a highly vulnerable region of El Salvador at the time of parturition. TORCH pathogens, that cause TORCH congenital syndromes, are classically defined as Toxoplasma gondii, other infectious causes of concern (Zika virus, malaria, human immunodeficiency virus, etc), Rubella virus, Cytomegalovirus(CMV), and Herpes Simplex Viruses. These infections can be passed from mother to fetus through the placenta or other perinatal routes and cause severe maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. This dissertation sought to understand perinatal …
Tragic Relief!, Katherine Shanks
Tragic Relief!, Katherine Shanks
Theses and Dissertations
This poetry manuscript explores loneliness, sexuality, violence, gender/fluidity, the self, the idea of the self, and American capitalism with an irreverent and dry humor. Tragicomic in tone, the poems balance a sense of dire exuberance with personal history and anecdote ranging from sentimental to sarcastic to withering. Located in New Jersey, the manuscript engages with local history, lore, and culture. A wide range of references bridge various ends of the literary canon, while the poems likewise reach for referents from fine art, music, TV, and film. Characters recur as figures of patriarchy, capitalistic work ethic, and gender trouble in various …
Love And Freedom, Allen Michael Hopkins
Love And Freedom, Allen Michael Hopkins
Theses and Dissertations
I have created my thesis body of work by researching children's book illustrations and distorted portraits by various artists. My illustrations are based on my book, The Adventures of Henry and Isabella: Battle of Proerable, inspired by the Disney films The Chronicles of Narnia, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, How to Build a Better Boy, and Kim Possible series. My distorted portraits of friends and family represent their personality traits. Even though the illustrations and portraits follow the style of European artists Franz Marc, Wassily Kandinsky, and Paul Klee, they are distinguished from the artists’ styles. The …
The Effects Of Gamified Peer Feedback On Student Writing In High School English Language Arts, Kerise Amaris Broome
The Effects Of Gamified Peer Feedback On Student Writing In High School English Language Arts, Kerise Amaris Broome
Theses and Dissertations
National assessments on writing show that student proficiency is low in part because many high school students lack revision skills. Compounding the problem is that as classroom sizes grow, teachers have less time to give the feedback that students need to improve. Peer feedback shows promise in being able to solve the feedback problem, but it must be carefully structured to be effective. The purpose of this action research was to evaluate the impact of gamified peer feedback in a high school English Language Arts classroom at Southern Charter High School. Three research questions guided this study: (1) What impact …
Genetic Mechanisms Underlying Maladaptation In Specialized Species Interactions, Nitin Ravikanthachari
Genetic Mechanisms Underlying Maladaptation In Specialized Species Interactions, Nitin Ravikanthachari
Theses and Dissertations
Adaptation has been used as the framework to understand the power of natural selection in structuring biodiversity and driving biological interactions. However, recent examples have indicated that many organisms are maladapted to their local conditions. Maladaptation can result from various causes including rapid environmental change, novel environments, interplay of evolutionary forces (viz: gene flow-selection balance) and anthropogenic disturbance.
To dissect the genetic mechanisms underlying maladaptation, I used the interaction between Pieris macdunnoughii (Remington) (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) which lays eggs on an invasive mustard Thlaspi arvense (L.) (Brassicaceae), which is lethal to the larvae.
First, local adaptation to avoid laying eggs on …
Animal Representation Of Race In The Princess And The Frog, Tiffany Tyantyan Enoch
Animal Representation Of Race In The Princess And The Frog, Tiffany Tyantyan Enoch
Theses and Dissertations
Disney’s 2009 film The Princess and the Frog was created in response to racial criticism. It features the first Black princess as a means of promoting racial equality. This film attempts to positively portray Black characters, who were depicted as violent and lazy in previous animations.
While the film showcases positive themes (e.g., internal beauty and virtuous work) and portrays Black characters in a more positive light than previous films, it still perpetuates the typical racism against people of color. The lack of accurate and equal representation of racial groups in recognizable and famous stories is a persistent issue, and …
Gluten Free Diet Ameliorates Si Enteropathy In Iga Deficient Mice, Ryan Albert William Ball
Gluten Free Diet Ameliorates Si Enteropathy In Iga Deficient Mice, Ryan Albert William Ball
Theses and Dissertations
Secretory IgA is the most abundant antibody in the intestinal mucosal and functions as the first line of defense against pathogens and micro-organisms in the gut. Selective IgA deficiency is the most common form of antibody deficiency. Clinically, IgA deficient patients are largely asymptomatic, they are however at a higher risk of developing certain inflammatory conditions like Celiac disease; an SI-specific enteropathy triggered by exposure to dietary gluten. Interestingly, celiac patients are 10-15 times more likely to have an IgA deficiency. Recent studies have shown that IgA-/- mice develop enteropathy specifically in the ileum. We confirmed this phenotype in …

Theses and Dissertations
The following is an incomplete manuscript of the novel, How Do You Feel. Set in a post-dystopian future, a city-sized ship called Pilgrim sails toward the mysterious Blue Star. Onboard, society has divided itself, in which the lowest of them all, Leashed, are enslaved by Tuners. While many inhabitants dream of reaching land again, its enslaved people cannot dream, let alone feel. Among them, Elijah is one of the numbest. She obeys her Tuner and abides by the order of Pilgrim. However, her world changes once she’s touched by the Blue Star, and she discovers many horrors lurking in …
Diffracting The Christine: Documenting A Building Multiple, Charles Brian Dedrick Harmon
Diffracting The Christine: Documenting A Building Multiple, Charles Brian Dedrick Harmon
Theses and Dissertations
The recent mingling of rhetorical theory and new materialism provides the space to ask different kinds of questions about our built history. Simultaneously, a parallel disciplinary interest in qualitative rhetorical field methods provides a growing arsenal for researchers who are invested in ‘being there’ and making a difference in the world. Working at the intersections of rhetorical theory, documentary film studies, and historic preservation, this project engages the Christine building differently. I offer a methodological framework to bridge rhetorical new materialism and rhetorical field methods and create a heuristic based in documentary theory and practice. As an archival, performance ethnography, …
Leptin, Serotonin, And The Control Of Food Intake, Nicholas David Maxwell
Leptin, Serotonin, And The Control Of Food Intake, Nicholas David Maxwell
Theses and Dissertations
Obesity has created a devastating public health crisis that severely affects both quality of life and exacerbates serious health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. For this reason, better treatments are critical, yet there are very few. The systems that regulate our metabolism and food consumption are intricate, complex, and still poorly understood, as the brain integrates peripheral signals with central neural networks to control our energy balance. One of these peripheral signals, leptin, holds great promise as a way to treat obesity but has been ineffective in patients with obesity. Therefore, our goal is to better understand the …
B-Cell-Specific Mhcii Promotes Host-Microbiome Symbiosis, Mary Melissa Roland
B-Cell-Specific Mhcii Promotes Host-Microbiome Symbiosis, Mary Melissa Roland
Theses and Dissertations
Classical major histocompatibility complex class II (MHCII) molecules are cell surface glycoproteins that bind and present peptide antigens on the surface of antigen presenting cells (APCs). MHCII:peptide complexes engage T cell receptors (TCRs) and CD4 co-receptors thereby facilitating cognate interactions between CD4+ T cells and APCs, which is responsible for the development of antigen-specific reactions and long-lived immunity; so called TD antibody responses. This is a critical step in the host’s response to pathogens, commensals, environmental stimuli and tumors. IgA is the dominant antibody isotype secreted into the gut and it is thought that most of the IgA in the …
Ultra-Processed Food Consumption And Risk Of Liver Cancer, Longgang Zhao
Ultra-Processed Food Consumption And Risk Of Liver Cancer, Longgang Zhao
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Studies have shown positive associations between ultra-processed food (UPF) intake and obesity and type 2 diabetes, two risk factors for liver cancer. However, the relationship between UPF intake and liver cancer has scarcely been studied. We aimed to evaluate the association between UPF intake and the risk of liver cancer in three prospective cohorts and further explore the role of genetic predisposition to fatty liver diseases and biomarkers of liver health on modifying the association.
Methods: We used data from the Nurses’ Health Study (1986-2012), the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (1986-2012), and UK Biobank (2006-2020). Diet was assessed with …
An Investigation Of The Galenic Influence On The Artistic Depiction Of Anatomical Concepts During The Renaissance, Fatima Amjad
An Investigation Of The Galenic Influence On The Artistic Depiction Of Anatomical Concepts During The Renaissance, Fatima Amjad
Theses and Dissertations
The Renaissance era was a period marked by an intellectual and artistic resurgence in Europe, during which artists sought inspiration from Classical sources. This resulted in a move away from stylized medieval aesthetics and towards a renewed emphasis on accuracy and humanity in art. Renaissance artists developed art styles that emphasized perspective, proportion, and anatomy, creating more lifelike and naturalistic representations of the human figure and the natural world. The adoption of naturalism and individualism in the arts paired with the rediscovery and retranslation of ancient anatomical texts propelled artists and anatomists to deepen their understanding of the human body. …
Oppa-Ng Gamsahamnita-Ng~~~: The Phonetics Of Nasal Cuteness In Korean Aegyo, Drew Michael Crosby
Oppa-Ng Gamsahamnita-Ng~~~: The Phonetics Of Nasal Cuteness In Korean Aegyo, Drew Michael Crosby
Theses and Dissertations
The term aegyo is often defined as a form of performative cuteness comprising a range of linguistic and non-linguistic behaviors (K. Moon, 2013; Puzar & Hong, 2018). Previous anthropological, discursive, and linguistic investigations (K. Moon, 2013; Puzar & Hong, 2018; H. Jang, 2021) identify it as a gendered practice associated with “modern and trendy young women in Korean mainstream culture” (K. Moon, 2017, p. 42), often used for requesting favors, maintaining social harmony, and gaining economic advancement (Manietta 2015; Puzar & Hong 2018). K. Moon (2013) asserts that the features that most prominently index aegyo are: rising-falling intonation (LHL%), the …
Anthropocene Composition: Teaching Terminal Generations In The Pre-Apocalyptic Classroom, John Michael Purfield
Anthropocene Composition: Teaching Terminal Generations In The Pre-Apocalyptic Classroom, John Michael Purfield
Theses and Dissertations
The Anthropocene is an era characterized by human alteration of the planet at deep geological levels and permeation of anthropogenic damage across all biomes. The primary crisis of this era is climate change, which is understood broadly as the anthropogenic disruption in weather patterns and global temperature averages caused by carbon emissions and other pollutants, as well as extractivism and terraforming (deforestation, monoculture farming, desertification and alterations of waterways, for example). Though popular media tends to frame climate change as a looming but always future problem, it is currently producing casualties, both human and nonhuman. The ongoing great extinction correlates …
“All The Rights Of Native Cherokees”: The Appearance Of Black People In Cherokee Society, Ayanna Goines
“All The Rights Of Native Cherokees”: The Appearance Of Black People In Cherokee Society, Ayanna Goines
Theses and Dissertations
The appearance of Blacks in Native spaces affected the very structure of Indigenous lives during the forced removal of Native groups in the 1830s to the emancipation of enslaved people in the 1860s contributing to the change from a “clan-based society to a society grounded in the modern concept of rule of law” as the need to control the actions of enslaved people called for the creation of laws. Tribal courts were also used to determine whether someone was recognized and adopted into the clan. Outside of government involvement, the status of enslaved Black people was reinforced by the social …
Multilevel Description Of Spotted Fever Group Rickettsia Among Humans, Animals, And The Environment In Miraflores, Colombia, And South Carolina, Usa, Lidia Gual Gonzalez
Multilevel Description Of Spotted Fever Group Rickettsia Among Humans, Animals, And The Environment In Miraflores, Colombia, And South Carolina, Usa, Lidia Gual Gonzalez
Theses and Dissertations
Tick-borne diseases are emerging worldwide due to environmental shifts caused by land fragmentation and climate change. Among the most important ones spotted fever group rickettsioses (SFGRs) are of particular interest due to their wide species variety and high pathogenicity. Given the global spotted fever group rickettsia (SFGR) distribution, evaluation and comparison of different populations is critical to better understand these pathogens' epidemiology and unravel the risk factors affecting disease occurrence. Consequently, this dissertation investigates SFGR highlighting the One Health framework, assessing animals, humans, and the environment. The first part includes an evaluation at the household level using human and canine …
Sensitivity Of The Cupid Experiment To Bragg-Primakoff Conversion Of Solar Axions And Alps, Kevin P. Wilson
Sensitivity Of The Cupid Experiment To Bragg-Primakoff Conversion Of Solar Axions And Alps, Kevin P. Wilson
Theses and Dissertations
The author reports in this dissertation on the application of a technique to use bolometer detector arrays, such as those of the CUORE experiment and its proposed upgrade CUPID, to search for 14.4 keV Solar axions arising from an M1 nuclear transition of thermally excited 57Fe in the Solar core. Density functional theory calculations performed using QU A N T U M ESPRESSO for Li2MoO4 enable the computation of a time-dependent axionto-photon conversion rate in the bolometer crystals. These calculations predict that the proposed CUPID detector will be sensitive to Solar axions or axion-like particles that …
The Widened Hearthstone Urban Playgrounds As The Infrastructure Of Public Mothering, 1900-1930, Alexandra Miller
The Widened Hearthstone Urban Playgrounds As The Infrastructure Of Public Mothering, 1900-1930, Alexandra Miller
Theses and Dissertations
Despite the limitations on their formal political involvement, women across the United States took control of the Progressive Era playground movement, and playground advocates nationwide argued that urban play spaces constructed motherhood into the city. While many mothers used playgrounds for child care, playground directors used the maternal authority constructed into playgrounds to promote their ideas about ideal citizenship. One playground director, Mabel E. Macomber, called this aspect of playground work the “'mother' element,” believing, as did other workers and advocates, that playgrounds were part of the apparatus of urban mothering, and in the case of many poor working women, …

Neurodevelopmental And Transient Impacts Of Brain Kynurenic Acid Elevation And Sleep-Wake Behavior, Katherine Rentschler
Theses and Dissertations
Sleep is vital for healthy cognition and mood. Sleep dysregulation is implicated in psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Sex differences in sleep and arousal dysregulation are prominent in patients with psychotic disorders. Elevated levels of the neuroactive tryptophan metabolite, kynurenic acid (KYNA), have been found in cerebrospinal fluid and postmortem brain tissue samples from patients with psychotic disorders. KYNA is an astrocyte derived antagonist at N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptors and α7 nicotinic acetylcholine (α7nACh) receptors. KYNA is synthesized in the brain from its biological precursor, kynurenine, via the enzyme kynurenine aminotransferase II (KAT II), a potential therapeutic …
Governance Of Drug Development Alliances, Devashish Chandrashekhar Thakar
Governance Of Drug Development Alliances, Devashish Chandrashekhar Thakar
Theses and Dissertations
Innovative biotechnology firms (hereafter, biotechs or biotech firms) consider drug development alliances with incumbent pharmaceutical firms (hereafter, pharmas or pharma firms) as a means to access complementary commercialization capabilities, enhance their managerial skillset through close interactions, and maintain financial stability. However, biotechs face challenges in designing and developing alliance contracts that (a) enable them to retain and refine valuable alliance assets and (b) ensure that the alliance makes tangible scientific progress. Designing contracts to achieve these dual purposes is therefore a salient concern for the biotechs.
Given these challenges, the first essay of this dissertation explores the factors driving the …
