Effect Of Brain Injury On Demand Of Alcohol, Whitney Michele Chaney May 2023

Effect Of Brain Injury On Demand Of Alcohol, Whitney Michele Chaney

Theses and Dissertations

Brain injury, or damage to the brain and/or surrounding structures, is listed by the CDC as the leading cause of disability and death in the United States. This kind of injury can result in symptoms that physical, cognitive, and behavioral functioning in those affected. Despite this, current literature reflects a significant deficiency in the understanding and management of behavioral symptoms, that present after the injury, in most neurorehabilitative treatments. This study aimed to investigate whether sustaining a brain injury can effect an individual’s demand intensity for alcohol, if their demand was inelastic, and their probability for misuse of alcohol. To …

Evaluation Of Human Mobility From Crowd-Sourced Cellular Data, Sasa Knezevic May 2023

Evaluation Of Human Mobility From Crowd-Sourced Cellular Data, Sasa Knezevic

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding patterns of human mobility plays a vital role in urban planning, traffic management, disease control, environmental impact evaluation, provisioning of services by both public and private enterprise and other areas of human activity. In this thesis, the human mobility patterns are studied using crowd sourced cellular data. The study characterizes human mobility through a meaningful set of mobility parameters. Each parameter is clearly defined, extracted from the available data, and described using statistical modeling tools. The parameters are evaluated at different time scales. It has been determined that despite its apparent randomness on the individual level, human mobility on …

A Step-By-Step Guide To Identify The Most Reliable Inventory Management System For Small Businesses Using Discrete Event Simulation And Pros And Cons Analysis: A Case Study At Camid-Florida Tech, Djalma Batista Oliveira Filho May 2023

A Step-By-Step Guide To Identify The Most Reliable Inventory Management System For Small Businesses Using Discrete Event Simulation And Pros And Cons Analysis: A Case Study At Camid-Florida Tech, Djalma Batista Oliveira Filho

Theses and Dissertations

According to the Department of Labor Statistics (2022), 20.6% of small businesses fail in their first year of operation, 42.6% fail after five years, and over 62.6% fail by their tenth year. One factor that can affect continued viability is the lack of knowledge and experience among small and medium-sized firms in inventory management. Despite the fact that inventory control is one of these businesses' most ignored management responsibilities, the expense of procuring inventory often accounts for a considerable portion of their budget. Due to poor inventory management or an inability to appropriately supervise their inventory, small firms may have …

Water-Soluble Iron Porphyrin Complex For The Catalytic N-Dealkylation Of Fentanyl, Amanda Pitt May 2023

Water-Soluble Iron Porphyrin Complex For The Catalytic N-Dealkylation Of Fentanyl, Amanda Pitt

Theses and Dissertations

An increase in the misuse of opioids in the United States and the increasing potency of analogs necessitates novel treatments of opioid overdose. The chemical structure of synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl, carfentanil, and morphine possess a trialkyl amine functional group (-NR3) which makes for a promising target for potential catalysts. Iron (III)-tetrasulfonatophenyl porphyrin (complex 9) was synthesized as a potential catalyst for degradation of fentanyl. Complex 9a was prepared from the direct reaction of the free porphyrin and FeSO4. Complex 9b was prepared from the direct reaction of the free porphyrin and FeCl2 in refluxing DMF. The complexes were …

Near-Optimal Control Of A Quadcopter Using Reinforcement Learning, Alberto Velazquez-Estrada May 2023

Near-Optimal Control Of A Quadcopter Using Reinforcement Learning, Alberto Velazquez-Estrada

Theses and Dissertations

This paper presents a novel control method for quadcopters that achieves near-optimal tracking control for input-affine nonlinear quadcopter dynamics. The method uses a reinforcement learning algorithm called Single Network Adaptive Critics (SNAC), which approximates a solution to the discrete-time Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (DT-HJB) equation using a single neural network trained offline. The control method involves two SNAC controllers, with the outer loop controlling the linear position and velocities (position control) and the inner loop controlling the angular position and velocities (attitude control). The resulting quadcopter controller provides optimal feedback control and tracks a trajectory for an infinite-horizon, and it is compared with …

Understanding Groundwater Flow In A Saturated Buffer Zone ( Sbz ) Using Numerical Models: Case Study Of T 3 Site, Mclean County, Central Illinois, Nnaemeka Henry Nsude Apr 2023

Understanding Groundwater Flow In A Saturated Buffer Zone ( Sbz ) Using Numerical Models: Case Study Of T 3 Site, Mclean County, Central Illinois, Nnaemeka Henry Nsude

Theses and Dissertations

Loss of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorous, from agricultural lands in the Midwest affects farm productivity and environmental quality. Nutrient runoff from lands discharged into streams degrades the aquatic ecosystem through eutrophication and subsequent hypoxic conditions. The presence of nitrogen also threatens the potability of numerous aquifer bodies globally due to their high solubility in water. To tackle this problem, best management practices such as Saturated Buffer Zone (SBZ) are implemented to reduce nitrogen from nitrate-laden tile water from agricultural lands before being discharged into streams. Groundwater flow and interactions at SBZ are not well understood. To aid the …

Physiognomy And Emotional Abuse In Elizabeth Gaskell's "The Grey Woman", Natalie Ann Davis Apr 2023

Physiognomy And Emotional Abuse In Elizabeth Gaskell's "The Grey Woman", Natalie Ann Davis

Theses and Dissertations

Perrault's Bluebeard tale is a story of domestic abuse: Bluebeard tries to control his wife's movements by prohibiting her from entering a specific room in their chateau and attempts to kill his wife as punishment when she ultimately disobeys him. Bluebeard's violence towards his wife clearly marks him as an abuser. There have been countless other versions of the Bluebeard tale including Elizabeth Gaskell's short story "The Grey Woman." Unlike other versions of the tale that emphasize Bluebeard's physically abusive behavior, Gaskell's version focuses on a more subtle form of abuse: emotional abuse. Emotional abuse has remained an obscure topic …

Assessing The Role Of Hybridization In The Evolution Of Two Common Lineages Of Lichen-Forming Fungi, Rachel Keuler Apr 2023

Assessing The Role Of Hybridization In The Evolution Of Two Common Lineages Of Lichen-Forming Fungi, Rachel Keuler

Theses and Dissertations

Once thought to be an evolutionary dead-end, hybridization is now being detected in genomes across kingdoms, perhaps even playing an integral role in evolution. In chapter 1, I investigated the potential influences of hybridization on the evolution of a group of vagrant, asexual species in the Rhizoplaca melanophthalma species group. I sequenced the mitochondrial and nuclear genomes of 55 specimens and found well-supported nuclear phylogenies of both datasets. There were, however, multiple instances of discordance between the mitochondrial and nuclear trees, which can be caused by hybridization. PhyloNet and ABBA-BABA also detected widespread hybridization among this group. In chapter 2, …

Semantic Overflow Of Powerful Feelings: Digital Humanities Approaches And The 1805 And 1850 Versions Of Wordsworth's Prelude, Dylan Hansen Apr 2023

Semantic Overflow Of Powerful Feelings: Digital Humanities Approaches And The 1805 And 1850 Versions Of Wordsworth's Prelude, Dylan Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

Scholars have repeatedly contrasted the 1805 and 1850 versions of William Wordsworth’s The Prelude since the discovery and publication of the former by Ernest De Sélincourt in 1926. Points of contention have included the 1850 poem’s grammatical revisions and shifts toward greater political and religious orthodoxy. While these discussions have waned in recent decades, digital humanities tools allow us to revisit oft-debated texts through new lenses. Wanting to examine scholarly claims about The Prelude from a digital humanities perspective, I collaborated with Dr. Billy Hall to enter both versions of the poem into a data analysis and visualization tool, which …

The Morpheme -Ga In Pastaza Quichua, Charles W. Alger Apr 2023

The Morpheme -Ga In Pastaza Quichua, Charles W. Alger

Theses and Dissertations

Pastaza Quichua (PQ) is a member of the Quechua IIB branch of Quechuan languages and has a rich morphology. However, this richness is often over-simplified for the sake of simpler explanation. Most Quechuan languages have a morpheme that is usually spelt -ga, -ka or -qa, and is described as a topicalizing clitic. In this thesis, I will examine the morpheme -ga in PQ, which, like its cognates, is often said to be a topicalizing clitic, despite the fact that it frequently breaks traditional rules for both topic marking and clitic-hood. I find that -ga is a topic marker according to …

Assessment Of Spatial And Temporal Variations In Chloride Concentration In An Agricultural Tile-Drained Area In Central Illinois, Okiemute Commander Apr 2023

Assessment Of Spatial And Temporal Variations In Chloride Concentration In An Agricultural Tile-Drained Area In Central Illinois, Okiemute Commander

Theses and Dissertations

Long-term increase in chloride (Cl-) concentration in surface water and groundwater from anthropogenic sources, including deicing salts, agriculture, septic effluents, and wastewater treatment plants is a growing cause for concern all over the world. In rural midwestern US with predominant agricultural land usage and less impervious surface cover, agriculture may serve as a potential source for Cl- in surface and groundwater systems. A saturated riparian buffer (SRB) installed adjacent to a central Illinois stream to reduce nutrient losses was used to identify populations of Cl-, substantiate agricultural influence, and identify spatial and temporal Cl- variations within the SRB. 2297 water …

On And On And On, Rachel Hansen Apr 2023

On And On And On, Rachel Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

One defining root of the essay is its goal to articulate thoughts, simple and complex, into a piece that readers might deliberate and rest and even rely on. On this or that or the other-- "on" being a word suggesting sturdiness and foundation. On and On and On is a collection of personal essays which intends to examine the theories of "truth" (another word associated with sturdiness,) within personal experiences, as they are delivered through creative means. When truths in life are examined and explored in essayistic ways, we discover more profound axioms of the soul that would otherwise remain …

Healing Practices And Ritual Feasts Among The Nabateans: A Study Of Absorbed Residues From Ceramics On The Ad-Deir Plateau, Jake Hubbert Apr 2023

Healing Practices And Ritual Feasts Among The Nabateans: A Study Of Absorbed Residues From Ceramics On The Ad-Deir Plateau, Jake Hubbert

Theses and Dissertations

Eastern Cistern B on the Ad-Deir Plateau is unusual in its breadth and variety of ceramic vessels represented by thousands of sherds. These sherds raised significant questions about the purpose and use of the vessels that they originally came from. This thesis argues that the ceramic vessels that were deposited in Eastern Cistern B represent the deposited remains of an ancient Nabataean ritual feast. Furthermore, this thesis also helps to answer the questions surrounding what the ceramic containers once held and their relationship to that ritual meal. This thesis identified residues absorbed within the ceramic fragments through the use of …

Migration Of Elk (Cervus Canadensis) And Barriers To Movement, Levi Watkins Apr 2023

Migration Of Elk (Cervus Canadensis) And Barriers To Movement, Levi Watkins

Theses and Dissertations

Movement patterns of animals are varied, complex, and can be influenced by environmental and anthropogenic factors. One form of animal movement, migration, is influenced by environmental factors that alter the timing, duration, intensity, and likelihood of migration. Additionally, features of the landscape, both natural and anthropogenic, can alter how animals move through their seasonal and home ranges. Movement patterns can be impeded or prevented by features such as railroads, rivers, and roads. Here we explore characteristics of elk (Cervus canadensis) migration by evaluating the strategies of migration exhibited and the factors that influence migration of elk in central and eastern …

Zero And Few-Shot Concept Learning With Pre-Trained Embeddings, Jamison M. Moody Apr 2023

Zero And Few-Shot Concept Learning With Pre-Trained Embeddings, Jamison M. Moody

Theses and Dissertations

Neural networks typically struggle with reasoning tasks on out of domain data, something that humans can more easily adapt to. Humans come with prior knowledge of concepts and can segment their environment into building blocks (such as objects) that allow them to reason effectively in unfamiliar situations. Using this intuition, we train a network that utilizes fixed embeddings from the CLIP (Contrastive Language--Image Pre-training) model to do a simple task that the original CLIP model struggles with. The network learns concepts (such as "collide" and "avoid") in a supervised source domain in such a way that the network can adapt …

Volatile Organic Compound Identification Using Metal Oxide Sensors And Machine Learning, Hunter Tiner Apr 2023

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are emitted gases that include many chemicals that can be created by biological processes or the byproduct of industrial processes, and can be present in a variety of pollutants. VOCs can cause a variety of ailments in humans and animals, and are expressed in plants as a way of signaling damage or the presence of pests. In this Thesis, an Internet of Things (IOT) E-nose device is outfitted with a gas array of eight Metal Oxide Semiconductor (MOS) type gas sensors, which are sensitive to a broad range of VOCs, yet lack selectivity and are unable …

Perfusion Pressure-Flow Relationships In Synthetic Poroelastic Vocal Fold Models, Cooper B. Thacker Apr 2023

Perfusion Pressure-Flow Relationships In Synthetic Poroelastic Vocal Fold Models, Cooper B. Thacker

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to study perfusion pressure-flow relationships in self-oscillating synthetic poroelastic vocal fold (VF) models before, during, and after vibration. This was accomplished by developing a custom ultra-soft poroelastic material, incorporating the poroelastic material as the cover layer in a synthetic VF model, and studying the model vibratory response and the flow rate of fluid perfused through the cover layer while undergoing flow-induced vibration. The custom ultra-soft poroelastic material was developed using the method of direct templating with sucrose spheres as the sacrificial template and silicone as the infiltration medium. The average modulus of elasticity of …

Sound, Stories, And Psychology: The Perceptions And Motivations Of Audiobook Consumption, Ellice K. Tan

Theses and Dissertations

The demand for audiobooks is higher than ever--and increasing each year, surpassing the growth rate of electronic books, print books, and the US economy overall. Audiobooks have long been used to aid adolescent and struggling readers; however, recent studies have revealed that the majority of audiences consume audiobooks for the purpose of entertainment and relaxation. Despite this, much of the research available on audiobooks still applies to audiobooks as they are used in education. The purpose of this study was to understand the attitudes, opinions, and beliefs of people who love listening to audiobooks. The study was conducted using Q …

Disentangling Sexual Selection On A Complex, Multicomponent Trait: Song Of The Northern House Wren, Rachael A. Disciullo Apr 2023

Disentangling Sexual Selection On A Complex, Multicomponent Trait: Song Of The Northern House Wren, Rachael A. Disciullo

Theses and Dissertations

Beautiful and abundant, bird song has long captured the attention of evolutionary biologists interested in sexual selection. Although most studies have examined single facets of song in relation to male-male competition (intrasexual selection) and female mate choice (intersexual selection), selection typically acts on multiple components that collectively influence an individual’s mating success. By studying how multiple components of song simultaneously play a role in male-male competition and female mate choice, we can better understand how sexual selection has directly and indirectly shaped this elaborate trait. I explored the role of male song in the context of sexual selection in northern …

Progressive Education In C. S. Lewis's Prince Caspian, Voyage Of The Dawn Treader, And The Silver Chair: Narnia As A Remedy To The Green Book, Megan Marie Johnson Apr 2023

Progressive Education In C. S. Lewis's Prince Caspian, Voyage Of The Dawn Treader, And The Silver Chair: Narnia As A Remedy To The Green Book, Megan Marie Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Recent scholarship has taken an interest in C. S. Lewis's political views and how they are manifested in his fiction. However, few have thoroughly analyzed the specific political implications of his children's series, The Chronicles of Narnia. Part of this may be because Lewis himself insisted his fiction was nonpartisan. The heavily religious allegories in the series can also overshadow the political commentary. This thesis contributes to the growing discourse on political commentary in Lewis's fiction by identifying four concerns he had with progressive education and then demonstrating how he criticizes them in Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn …

Afrikaans Taboo Words: Offensiveness Ranking And Reflections In Usage, Rebecca Brenkman Apr 2023

Afrikaans Taboo Words: Offensiveness Ranking And Reflections In Usage, Rebecca Brenkman

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the offensiveness of Afrikaans taboo words gathered from an online survey and cross-compares it to grammatical constructions and functionality as displayed in an Afrikaans corpus. Culturally speaking, Afrikaans has a rich history of taboo terminology, especially in the racial category. The historical importance of taboo terms aids in understanding the evolution of the offensiveness of terms, especially as influenced by factors such as politics, attitude shifts, younger generations, etc. Results from the online survey focused primarily on the White Afrikaans-speaking population, as minimal responses were gathered from other ethnic groups. Additional findings from the survey indicated that …

Forest Understory Plant Community Response To Prescribed Fire And Mechanical Thinning Treatments, Noelle V. Zenger Apr 2023

Forest Understory Plant Community Response To Prescribed Fire And Mechanical Thinning Treatments, Noelle V. Zenger

Theses and Dissertations

Much of the biodiversity in a forest comes from the understory vegetation. However, centuries of fire suppression in the western United States have made human-implemented disturbance necessary for reinstating natural disturbance cycles. However, the mechanical thinning and prescribed burning treatments used by land managers may differentially affect the response of the understory community. This study aimed to compare how prescribed fire and mechanical thinning treatments, with the size and severity of those treatments, affect understory plant communities in aspen-conifer forests over time. We sampled the understory community in burned, mechanically thinned, and untreated forest stands one, three, or five years …

Designing Resilient Agents Using Grammatical Evolution, Behavior Trees, And Finite Linear Temporal Logic, Aadesh Neupane Apr 2023

Designing Resilient Agents Using Grammatical Evolution, Behavior Trees, And Finite Linear Temporal Logic, Aadesh Neupane

Theses and Dissertations

Resilience is essential for long-term autonomous agents. Swarm behaviors seen in bees, ants, birds, fish, and others are interesting because they resiliently perform complex coordinated tasks like foraging, nest-selection, flocking and escaping predators without centralized control or coordination. Conventionally, mimicking swarm behaviors with robots requires researchers to study actual behaviors, derive mathematical models, and implement these models as state machines. Since the conventional approach is time-consuming and cumbersome, this dissertation uses a grammatical evolution algorithm with Behavior Trees (BTs) to evolve behaviors that are resilient to different perturbations for foraging and nest maintenance tasks. The modular, reactive, and readable properties …

Monsters Can Do More: Teaching With Monster Studies, Colleen Karn Apr 2023

Monsters Can Do More: Teaching With Monster Studies, Colleen Karn

Theses and Dissertations

Monster texts have been studied through a variety of lenses—postcolonial, feminist, etc.—but I argue the most effective way to study monster texts is through a monster studies lens. This lens, which includes both monster culture and monster theory, allows for a more robust understanding of the text, notably how and why cultures and cultural texts produce and employ monsters and how those monsters and monster texts affect the cultures who consume them. Using a monster studies approach to monster texts enables monsters to do more, especially when teaching. Teaching with monster studies can foster, in students, empathy and even advocacy …

Background: Manufacturers continue to look for methods to save time in aging cheese. Complex reactions occur during cheese ripening that produce characteristic flavors and aromas. The addition of exogenous lipase enzymes is one accelerated ripening method that has been studied. Our objective was to document and compare the flavor profiles of cheddar cheeses created with either microbial lipase or animal lipase. Materials and Methods: The experiment followed a conventional formulation to create experimental batches of cheddar cheese. Kid goat lipase and three microbial lipase treatments were compared against a control. Other animal lipases were evaluated in preliminary research but were …

Dopamine D2 Receptors As A Peripheral Biomarker For Brain Dopamine Levels, Christina Small Apr 2023

Dopamine D2 Receptors As A Peripheral Biomarker For Brain Dopamine Levels, Christina Small

Theses and Dissertations

The ability to objectively index dopamine (DA) levels in the brain has the potential to revolutionize the field of neuropsychopharmacology, as having a peripheral biomarker of brain DA would enable the objective monitoring of the progression of Parkinson's disease (PD) and other DA-dependent psychiatric states. Of particular relevance to commercialization, it would provide an objective measure of treatment efficacy. We used a DA-depletion approach to determine if peripheral D2Rs are a biomarker for brain DA; mainly, the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) neurotoxin model and PD subjects, which are well-known models of DA depletion in the midbrain of rodents and humans, respectively. Dopamine …

Habitat Effects On Scorpion Densities And Microhabitat Use By Centruroides Vittatus And Vaejovis Waueri In South Texas, Jonathan Beltran Apr 2023

Habitat Effects On Scorpion Densities And Microhabitat Use By Centruroides Vittatus And Vaejovis Waueri In South Texas, Jonathan Beltran

Theses and Dissertations

Co-existence between Centruroides vittatus and Vaejovis waueri is influenced by environmental factors that shape their habitats. Differences in surface activity frequency between the two species suggest differential microhabitat use. The observed frequency of scorpions using microhabitats in the Martinez Ranch and La Union Ranch were not significantly different from the expected frequencies. Frequency of scorpions observed using microhabitats in La Union South was significantly different from the expected frequency (P<0.001). Microhabitat use of catclaw was lower than expected and higher than expected for other vegetation. Conditional comparisons of microhabitats were significantly different among habitats (P<0.001), size classes were significantly different among microhabitats (P<0.001), and size classes were significantly different among habitats (P<0.01). Microhabitat use by scorpions on the ground was higher among all habitats. Scorpion use of ground and grass were different among size classes. Size class I-II scorpions had a higher frequency than size class III. Scorpion density for C. vittatus was significantly different among habitats (P<0.0001) and scorpion density for V. waueri was significantly different among habitats (P<0.0001). Centruroides vittatus was significantly higher in the Martinez Ranch and in La Union South. Vaejovis waueri was significantly higher in La iv Union South. Associations between plant densities and scorpion size classes were tested. Plant densities had a significant association with C. vittatus size classes I and II in the Martinez Ranch. Association between plants had a significant correlation with C. vittatus size classes I and IV in La Union Ranch. Association between plants had a significant correlation with V. waueri’s total density. These associations may suggest plant densities may have a synergistic effect on scorpion densities. Soil type composition for the different habitats was hypothesized to influence scorpion densities. Maps for each site were created to show soil type compositions. Soil type findings suggest that La Union South had the soil types with the lowest soil strength. Vaejovis waueri was shown to have a higher density in La Union South where soils are sandier. Results indicate that co-existence between C. vittatus and V. waueri is possible because competition is low through minimal overlap in microhabitat use and intraguild predation avoidance.

Body In Rebellion: The Closing Body, Romantic Mesmerism, And Gothic Doubles In Hogg's Justified Sinner, Elizabeth E. Hinds Apr 2023

Body In Rebellion: The Closing Body, Romantic Mesmerism, And Gothic Doubles In Hogg's Justified Sinner, Elizabeth E. Hinds

Theses and Dissertations

This study explores the western Romantic period as a transition between the medieval “open body” and the modern “closed body.” It focuses on “closing body” phenomena such as “mesmerism” (i.e. animal magnetism), somnambulism, substance abuse, and the “second-self,” including notions of the subconscious and the trope of gothic Doppelgängers. This study draws from many pieces of western Romantic literature but is most centered around James Hogg’s 1824 The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. This new reading of Hogg’s novel suggests a core theme of body anxiety, rather than theological dispute.
