Theses and Dissertations

The writer undertook a preliminary investigation of the taxonomy and geographic distribution of a group of neuropterous insects, the Chrysopidae, in Utah. Two main methods of investigation were employed. The first, a bibliographic method, was to carefully review the literature concerning the Chrysopidae of the United States for all references pertaining to their distribution and their taxonomy. The second method of investigation was to study insect specimens …

The Life And Missionary Labors Of George Washington Hill, Ralph O. Brown Jan 1956

The Life And Missionary Labors Of George Washington Hill, Ralph O. Brown

Theses and Dissertations

The epic story of the Mormon pioneers is the story of a valiant, though persecuted group of people. Having been driven from their homes in the dead of winter, they fled to the Rocky Mountains and settled in the Great Salt Lake Valley. Here they became noted for their achievements in pioneering, homemaking, and colonizing great portions of this western country

Prominent in these activities of homemaking and colonizing, was George Washington Hill. Nature had endowed him handsomely. He was large and powerful of stature and he had a dignity and magnetism which drew men to him. In addition, he …

An Investigation Of The Contribution Of Latter-Day Revelation To An Understanding Of The Atonement Of Christ, Eldon R. Taylor Jan 1956

An Investigation Of The Contribution Of Latter-Day Revelation To An Understanding Of The Atonement Of Christ, Eldon R. Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the contributions of latter-day revelation to an understanding of the atonement of Christ in addition to that which is taught in the Bible.
It is generally acknowledged among Christians that the primary purpose of Christ's mission was to redeem mankind. The doctrine of the atonement contains the foundation principles of Chirstian faith and, yet the creeds of the several churches are in serious disagreement on many vital principles involved.
If the widely differing views are due to insufficient information in the bible, the question naturally follows - how does modern revelation clarify …

Mammals Of The Lynndyl, Utah, Sand Dune Area : A Population Problem, Hugh J. Phillips

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the kinds, population, distribution, and general habits of the mammals of the Lynndyl sand dune area. Only one article concerning the dunes was found, but several have been written on other dunes; however, none was found concerning mammals. Two quantitative studies, plot and transect trappings, were made and general observations were taken within the study area. Three types of plots; Russian thistle, juniper, and baren moving dunes; were trapped and revealed the following species: Dipodomys ordii, Peromyscus maniculatus, Reithrodontomys megalotis, Onychomys leucogaster, and Neotoma lepida. The most numerous animal in all plots …

The Effect Of Ferrous And Ferric Ions On The Conversion Of Malate To Pyruvate By A Cell Free Extract Of Pigeon Liver, Keith Erwin Richardson Jul 1955

The Effect Of Ferrous And Ferric Ions On The Conversion Of Malate To Pyruvate By A Cell Free Extract Of Pigeon Liver, Keith Erwin Richardson

Theses and Dissertations

Recent investigations on the crude pigeon liver extracts have shown the presence of an enzyme which catalyzes the oxidative decarboxylation of malate to pyruvate and carbon dioxide. The name malic enzyme has been given to this enzyme to distinguish it from malic dehydrogenase. Under aerobic conditions the addition of ferrous sulfate resulted in inhibition of the action of malic enzyme. Subsequent investigation showed that the inhibition obaerved was not due to ferrous ions, but due to ferric ions which were contaminating the ferrous sulfate. It was also shown that under aerobic conditions ferrous ions were rapidly oxidized to ferric ions. …

A Study Of The Families Of Utah Hemiptera, Gerald L. Nielsen Jun 1955

A Study Of The Families Of Utah Hemiptera, Gerald L. Nielsen

Theses and Dissertations

This study determines the number of families of Hemiptera found in the state and has a key for their classification. The characteristics and general distributions of each family are given, along with specific examples of the most common and economically important bugs. This paper deals with the ecology and distribution of small mammals in the following plant communities of Cedar Valley, Utah: juniper, greasewood, grass-rabbitbrush, and shadscale. Study periods were in August 1950 and 1951, October 1951, and April 1952 with each community studied 1,440 trap-nights. A combination of the Calhoun ''B" and transect method was employed; plant species and densities were taken and soil samples were checked for moisture content, total soluble salts and mechanical analysis. In the communities studied Dipodomys ordii utahensis (Merriam) is found in greatest abundance on sandy soil and Perognathus parvus olivaceus (Merriam) is found in greater …

A Study Of The Problem Of A Personal Devil And Its Relationship To Latter-Day Saint Beliefs, Lamar E. Garrard May 1955

A Study Of The Problem Of A Personal Devil And Its Relationship To Latter-Day Saint Beliefs, Lamar E. Garrard

Theses and Dissertations

The problem of the existence of a devil is important, since it relates to other beliefs which a person or his religion may uphold. The orthodox Christian concepts of the divinity of Christ, the Fall of man, the Atonement, and the inspiration of the Bible are altered when a belief in Satan is discarded.

The prophets of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) take a very definite stand concerning the existence of Satan. They declare that the devil and his angels exist and that they tempt and try to deceive men. L.D.S. scriptures, given through modern revelation, …

Latter-Day Saint Servicemen In The Philippine Islands: A Historical Study Of Their Religious Activities And Influences Resulting In The Official Organization Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In The Philippines, Lowell Eliason Call

Theses and Dissertations

Though generally unheard of in the Western world and the United States prior to the Spanish-American War of 1898, the Filipino people have made some remarkable contributions to world leadership and world history. Frequently they have been considered a pagan and an ignorant people, although in objectively observing them one finds such a belief unfounded and even the reverse of that to be true. Progress which the republic has made during the last fifty years, since being liberated to develop liberties in religion, politics, and education, is phenomenal, even when compared with the United States period of evolution to her …
