The study was conducted for the two years, 1967 and 1968 in the Thorpe and Topliff hills of central western Utah. Nesting densities on the study area were .36 pairs per square mile in 1967 and .40 pairs per square mile in 1968. Nests averaged one mile apart and were distributed in the periphery of the hills, overlooking the desert valleys. Favorite nest sites were cliff niches, but abandoned quarries and junipers were also …

History Of Fort Pembina 1870-1895, William D. Thomson Aug 1968

History Of Fort Pembina 1870-1895, William D. Thomson

Theses and Dissertations

The unsettled status of the Red River Valley during the 1860's made inevitable the establishment of a military post near the 49th Parallel. The Minnesota Uprising in 1862 caused a band of Sioux Indians, responsible for the massacre, to flee to Canada to escape punishment by the military. In 1863, a hastily organized battalion established a temporary fort at Pembina to capture the renegades. After accomplishing its mission, the battalion abandoned the post in 1864.

With the end of the Civil War, people looked to the frontier for fertile lands to settle; but the Indian threat kept them out …

Fall And Winter Population Study Of The Macro-Invertebrate Fauna Of Lincoln Beach, Utah Lake, With Notes On Invertebrates In Fish Stomachs., Ralph Buckly Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Due to the inconveniences associated with under ice population studies, most aquatic population studies are made during the spring, summer, and fall seasons. Like most lakes little is known about the fall and winter popu-lations of the Utah Lake invertebrates. The purpose of this study is to classify, determine quantitative fall and winter population fluctuations, and obtain life history and ecological information of the macro-invertebrates at . Lincoln Beach, Utah Lake. This lake is the largest, natural occurring body of fresh water in the state and has a high potential for the production of gamefish and water-fowl. As Smart (1960) …

The Effect Of Thiamine And Its Antagonists On Plasma And Tissue Lactic Dehydrogenase In Rats, Dong Hwa Park Aug 1968

The Effect Of Thiamine And Its Antagonists On Plasma And Tissue Lactic Dehydrogenase In Rats, Dong Hwa Park

Theses and Dissertations

The lactic dehydrogenase activity in plasma and tissues was measured in the thiamine-deprived, the oxythiamine-treated and the pyrithiamine-treated rats as well as the control rats. The lactic dehydrogenase levels of brain and kidney were significantly increased by oxythiamine treatment. The enzyme activity in heart was markedly decreased only in the thiamine-deprived rats. Unlike the above tissues, the enzyme levels in liver were decreased by 29-44 per cent in all three types of thiamine deficiency, However, the enzyme activity in plasma was significantly increased only by pyrithiamine administration. The distribution patterns of lactic dehydrogenase isozymes were electrophoretically examined in these deficiencies. …

An Investigation Of A Thyroidal Control Of Water Balance In The Leopard Frog, Rana Pipiens, Scott Mcclung Martin Jul 1968

An Investigation Of A Thyroidal Control Of Water Balance In The Leopard Frog, Rana Pipiens, Scott Mcclung Martin

Theses and Dissertations

A possible thyroidal control of water balance in the leopard frog, Rana pipiens, was investigated by (1) chemically thyroidectomizing intact animals by chronic injections of the goitrogen, 6-n-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU ), or making animals hyperthyroid with thyroxine injections, and (2) dehydration of the frogs in a flow of air to enhance the rate of water loss through the skin, followed by rehydration in tap water until the animals regained their former weight. Radioiodine was employed in limited studies on the frog thyroid gland to ascertain the effects on thyroidal function caused by PTU. The frogs were dehydrated in desiccators in which …

A Comparison Of Multiple Unit Activity During Classical, Instrumental, And Discrimination Learning Using A Noxious Unconditioned Stimulus, James V. Beardsley Jun 1968

A Comparison Of Multiple Unit Activity During Classical, Instrumental, And Discrimination Learning Using A Noxious Unconditioned Stimulus, James V. Beardsley

Theses and Dissertations

Multiple unit recording is a relatively new electrophysiological recording technique which records spike potentials from many neurons. In the Halas laboratory and others, systematic changes have been observed during classical conditioning but none under other conditioning procedures . Recently, some have interpreted changes in evoked potentials and multiple unit potentials as due to emotional arousal (fear) and thus related more to a conditioned emotional response (CER) than to conditioning per se. If a CER occurs, and not a learning modification, then during classical aversive conditioning a high sustained neuronal response ought to occur. This would reflect the high degree of …

Thin sections of rose leaves infected with S. pannosa were examined in a Hitachi electron microscope, model HS-7, after glutaraldehyde-acrolein fixation, OsO4-uranyl acetate staining, and embedding in Epon plastic. The components of S. pannosa haustoria consisted …

Studies On The Levels Of Acetylcholine In The Brains Of Thiamine-Deprived And Thiamine-Antagonized Rats, Darwin Leroy Cheney May 1968

Studies On The Levels Of Acetylcholine In The Brains Of Thiamine-Deprived And Thiamine-Antagonized Rats, Darwin Leroy Cheney

Theses and Dissertations

Thiamine deficiency has been reported to cause nerve degeneration in the peripheral nervous system and hemorrhage with associated cellular damage in the central nervous system (Prickett, 1934). Koedam (1958) observed convulsions in thiamine-deficient pigeons, but convulsions have only rarely been seen in rats (Gubler, 1961). Rats treated with the thiamine antagonist, pyrithiamine (PTh)* always develop ataxia and convulsions but these neurological symptoms have never been reported in those treated with oxythiamine (OTh), another thiamine antagonist (Gubler, 1961). Hosein, Chabrol, and Freedman (1966) concluded that neurological symptoms occur only when the brain thiamine content is diminished to 2.5%o r less of …

Elevational Occurrence Of The Ticks Dermacentor Andersoni And Dermacentor Parumapertus In Utah County, Utah, William J. Despain

Theses and Dissertations

Considerable research on ticks has been done since it was discovered that the Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni Stiles, was a principal vector of Rocky Mountain spotted fevero Additional disease agents of man are also transmitted by D. andersoni. This tick and a closely related species, Dermacentor parumapertus Neuman, occur commonly in Utah. The two species are often closely associated, although D. andersoni is believed to occur in the mountains, whereas D. parumapertus is in the desert valleys. Diseases affecting animals in nature are transmitted by ticks of both species. Consequently, any interaction between the two may be influential …

The Distribution Of Overwintering Arthropods In A Sheep Pasture In Utah County, Utah, Richard Frank Ashley

Theses and Dissertations

The parasitic mites on mammals living in the chaparral community of Utah are practically unknown ecologically. Keegan (1953) was the first to publish on parasitic mites from Utah. He listed mites of 12 species and 9 genera from Tooele and Juab counties from hosts which included one Peromyscus truei, five P. crinitus, and 20 P. maniculatus. Brennan and Beck (1955) published on the chiggers of Utah and included a key to 38 species. Allred (1954, 1956, 1957, 1958) studied the geographical distribution, seasonal occurrence, and biology of mites found on mice of the genus Peromyscus in Utah.

A Folk History Of The Manti Temple: A Study Of The Folklore And Traditions Connected With The Settlement Of Manti, Utah, And The Building Of The Temple, Barbara Lee Hargis

Theses and Dissertations

For some time I have been collecting folk material of the pioneers of Sanpete County, Utah, and their subsequent building of the Manti Temple. A few of the county's senior citizens witnessed part of the construction in the late 1870's and 1880's and the dedication in 1888 of the Temple. Many more are descendants of men and women who were directly involved in the building of the Temple and in the early work done there after its construction.

The stories that these people tell are significant. A collection of them represents a rich folk history of a religious, pioneering people …
