Viewer Oriented Art Forms, D. Gay Massee Jan 1970

Viewer Oriented Art Forms, D. Gay Massee

Theses and Dissertations

For purposes of clarity, art forms which attempt to affect the viewer through exaggerated means based on sensory appeal, are termed 'viewer oriented.' This thesis discusses the origin, development, and implications of these forms.

The past is examined for possible links to the present. Contemporary forms are considered more specifically. My own work is used as further reference.

It was found that the main body of viewer oriented works in the past had occurred within the sponsoring power institutions in a functioning role. As technological improvements increased, the artist's role in society lessened. Freed from restraints of established tradition, art …

The Principles And Nature Of Consecration And Stewardship As Taught In The Bible And Modern Scripture And By The Prophets, Seers, And Revelators Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Edward J. Brandt

Theses and Dissertations

This study analyzes the intent and primary bases of the L.D.S. concepts of Zion, consecration, and stewardship as it applies to the individual. Only the scripture and the statements of the Prophets, Seers, and Revelators of the L.D.S. Church are considered. An exhaustive history of consecration or stewardship is not provided. No attempt is made to establish Church doctrine.

Major conclusions are: (1) the most important definition of Zion is the "pure in heart" who, when a community, are the perfect society; (2) the concept of consecration is to wholly love God, and is achieved through the gospel of Jesus …

The Migratory Route Of Toxocara Canis In Gerbils, Thomas Carl Baker Aug 1969

The Migratory Route Of Toxocara Canis In Gerbils, Thomas Carl Baker

Theses and Dissertations

Toxocara canis (Werner, 1782) is the round worm most frequently found in dogs. From surveys in the United States, approximately 40-100% of young dogs and 5-70% of older dogs are infected with this parasite. Of 97 adult dogs surveyed in Provo, Utah, in 1968, 17. 5% were infected with T. canis (Fox, personal communication). Adult dogs become infected by ingesting food contaminated with the infective eggs from this parasite. Puppies are most frequently infected prenatally from their mother (Nifontov, I 949; Yutuc, 1949; Sprent, 1958; Webster, I 958; Douglas and Baker, 1959; Scothorn, Koutz and Groves, 1965; Wiseman. 19 69).

Reproductive Ecology Of Female Sharp-Tailed Grouse (Pedioecetes Phasianellus Jamesi Lincoln) And Food Habits Of Broods In Southwestern North Dakota, Lawrence Stanley Bernhoft

Theses and Dissertations

A study of the reproductive ecology and brood food habits of sharp-tail grouse (Pedioecates phaslanel.lus jamesi Lincoln) was conducted in southwestern North Dakota during 1967 and 1968. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the nest and brooding cover selected by the female was made to determine the effect of intensive grazing. Radio telemetry was utilized to monitor dispersals of 13 females from three dancing grounds; eight nests were located. Nest sites were selected in areas of moderate grazing with residual vegetation, or in non-use areas associated with intensive grazing' and land-use. Deferred grazing on native range was important in providing …

A Histochemical And Fine Structural Study Of Extracellular Fibrils In The Developing Chick Embryo, James J. O'Connell

Theses and Dissertations

The histochemistry of developing connective tissues and its relation to early connective tissue fibrils was investigated in the chick embryo. An area well suited to correlated histochemical and electron microscopic study occurs around the notochord. Here early microfibrils later contribute to the cartilaginous model of the future vertebral body. Chick embryos were sacrificed at one, two, three, four, six and ten days of incubation and were prepared routinely for both light and electron microscopy. A series of five histochemical stains (PAS, alcian blue, Hale colloidal iron, metachromatic toluidine blue, methenamine silver) and two histological techniques (Mallory's connective tissue; Weigert's elastin) …

Ultrastructural Investigations Of Tilletia Caries Teliospores, James Vincent Allen Aug 1969

Ultrastructural Investigations Of Tilletia Caries Teliospores, James Vincent Allen

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the ultrastructure of Tilletia caries teliospores. Specimens were prepared for viewing in the electron microscope by freeze-etching and thin-sectioning techniques. Thin-sectioning techniques gave excellent results with the teliospore walls and the lipid bodies within the teliospore but failed to adequately fix the membranes and internal organelle systems. Micrographs of Tilletia caries teliospores prepared using thin-sectioning show three major wall layers and two partition wall layers and abundant lipid bodies. The freeze-etch method of spore preparation proved superior to the thin-sectioning used in this study to reveal the internal organelle systems of the …

A Study Of Folic Acid Dependent Reactions In Bovine Brain, Dillard Spencer Broderick Aug 1969

A Study Of Folic Acid Dependent Reactions In Bovine Brain, Dillard Spencer Broderick

Theses and Dissertations

The enzymatic interconversion of serine to glycine and N5, N10-methylene tetrahydrofolate to N5 -methyl tetrahydrofolate have been studied in a cell-free system derived from bovine brain. A partial purification of serine transhydroxymethylase and N5, N10 -methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase has been achieved by ammonium sulfate fractionation, protamine sulfate fraction, and by various column chromatography procedures. The two enzymes studied catalyze sequentially the reductive transfer of the hydroxymethyl group of serine to the N5 position of tetrahydrofolate forming N5 -methyl tetrahydrofolate. The products of these reactions were assayed by the incorporation of C14 from a one-carbon precursor i.e., L-beta-(C14)-serine, or N5 -methyl …
