Personality Dimensions Of Drinking Patterns In Hospitalized Male Alcoholics, Donald J. Mccullagh Dec 1974

Personality Dimensions Of Drinking Patterns In Hospitalized Male Alcoholics, Donald J. Mccullagh

Theses and Dissertations

Research concerning alcoholism and personality has often been based upon the single syndrome concept of alcoholism. At the theoretical level it has been recognized that different personality patterns exist among alcoholics. However, few researchers have addressed themselves to this area. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a relationship existed between alcoholic drinking patterns and alcoholism severity based on the responses to the Alcohol Use Questionnaire and personality traits as measured by Cattell's Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire.

The sample consisted of 101 white males admitted to a midwestern alcoholism treatment center during a three month period in 1974. …

Behavioral Effects Of Postnatal Zinc Deficiency And Kryptopyrrole In The Rat, Peter C. Peterson Dec 1974

Behavioral Effects Of Postnatal Zinc Deficiency And Kryptopyrrole In The Rat, Peter C. Peterson

Theses and Dissertations

Zinc deficiency has been shown to have a wide range of behavioral effects in the rat. The experiments presented below were conducted to determine the effects of postnatal zinc deficiency (birth-21 days) on avoidance learning and on measures of emotionality. Kryptopyrrole, a substance which has been shown to produce "catatonic" freezing behavior and atypical electrical activity in rat brains, was administered to half of the Ss to study possible zinc deficiency-kryptopyrrole interactions.

Dams were made zinc deficient from the day of delivery until day 21 on a diet contaning less than 1 ppm zinc. Two dietary control groups were used: …

The relative distribution of the histone components from the various organs was compared. It was found that there was no significant difference in the distribution …

A Study Of The Ontology Of Evil In The Educational Philosophy Of Martin Buber, Laud Oswald Vaught Dec 1974

A Study Of The Ontology Of Evil In The Educational Philosophy Of Martin Buber, Laud Oswald Vaught

Theses and Dissertations

Martin Buber preferred to be known as a philosophical anthropologist rather than a philosopher, theologian, or teacher. Any of these titles are properly used since the scope of his writings contribute significantly to each of these fields.

It is the purpose of this paper to show that what he had to say concerning the Ontology of Evil is significant in the study of educational theory and that his own educational philosophy was influenced by his presuppositions concerning the nature of evil.

Chapter II is devoted to the literature relating to the basic elements of this study: the problem of evil, …

Kenneth Patchen Picture-Poems, Laurel J. Reuter Dec 1974

Kenneth Patchen Picture-Poems, Laurel J. Reuter

Theses and Dissertations

The problem was to present an exhibition of the works of Kenneth Patchen to the University of North Dakota community; to augment the exhibition with a published catalog which would give the uninitiated viewer a sense of Patchen's place in both literature and the visual arts; to accompany the catalog, in thesis form, with a critical article about Patchen’s work.

The procedure involved the following steps: (1) A compilation of a Patchen bibliography. (2) A week in California with Mrs. Patchen during which time I surveyed the artist's entire output of picture-poems and, based upon my critical judgment of the …

In general, frustration, disappointment and failure characterize the two works.

Ms. Hudson's novel was praised in many major American newspapers. It was discussed by Gordon Webber in The Saturday Review. …

Activity Of A Dipodomys Ordii Population Using Recapture Methods, James R. Garcia Nov 1974

Activity Of A Dipodomys Ordii Population Using Recapture Methods, James R. Garcia

Theses and Dissertations

Activity curves for Dipodomys ordii were developed from data obtained from a study utilizing an electrically monitored trapping grid. The curves for non-perturbated populations showed an initial post-dusk peak, followed by increasing activity and a large pre-dawn peak; but after ten dominant animals had been removed, the largest activity peak was post-dusk. Differences in activity patterns were not found among sex, age or reproductive classes. Rising ambient temperatures, falling barometric pressures, winds over 3.2 km/hr and the absence of the moon depressed capture numbers; while increasing humidity (relative and absolute), decreasing soil temperatures at 20 and 40 cm below ground …

The Effects Of Highway Construction On The Fish Populations In The Weber River Near Henefer, Summit County, Utah, Edward James Peters

Theses and Dissertations

Alterations of streams to facilitate highway construction and consumptive water use has become a fisheries management problem. To evaluate the effects of channeling concomitant to construction of Interstate 80 N. near Henefer, Utah, altered and unaltered sections of the Weber River were compared on the basis of fishes censused, population estimates and ordinations. Species compositions in particular areas were influenced by local rheologic conditions. Changes in species composition between samplings at a particular area were caused by fish movements. Data from altered sections, rehabilitated with deflectors and checkdams, were not noticeably different than data from unaltered areas. However, fish movements …

Theses and Dissertations

Nests of the Black-crowned Night Heron and the Snowy Egret were examined in five central Utah colonies in 1973 to determine the spatial distribution within the colony. Nest locations of the 1085 nests of the two species were plotted to the nearest foot with an alidade and plane table. Tests of randomness, clump size, association, segregation, and T distribution were utilized. No differences between species were noted for the distance to the nearest and the next nearest nest. The Night Heron nested closer to other Night Herons and more often than did the Snowy Egret which non-significantly selected either species …

Absorption Of Caffeine Through Isolated Rat Small Intestine, William James Hatch Aug 1974

Absorption Of Caffeine Through Isolated Rat Small Intestine, William James Hatch

Theses and Dissertations

Intestines of fifty-six albino rats of the Holtzman strain were removed and perfused with Krebs bicarbonate buffered solutions containing caffeine. After one hour of absorbtion, caffeine was extracted from the serosal fluids in chloroform and concentrations were determined spectrophotometrically. It was found that all portions of the small intestine transported caffeine against a concentration gradient. This transport mechanism demonstrated saturation kinetics and was inhibited by ouabain. It was concluded that the movement of caffeine from the mucosa to the serosa of the small intestine cannot be the result of simple diffusion. Possible mechanisms by which the absorption of caffeine takes …

An Experimental Examination Of Cautela's Covert Sensitization As A Smoking Reduction Technique, Jerome Irwin Weiss Aug 1974

An Experimental Examination Of Cautela's Covert Sensitization As A Smoking Reduction Technique, Jerome Irwin Weiss

Theses and Dissertations

Experimental studies investigating the aversive imagery technique of Covert Sensitization as a cigarette smoking deterrent have not clearly testified to its effectiveness. They have either deviated from Cautela’s technique and/or confounded their results by adding other components to it.

The present study tested the hypothesis that the successful results of Covert Sensitization requires both therapist-administered treatment and instructions that Subjects (Ss) also self-administer treatment. The self-administered treatment (homework) consisted of Ss imagining Covert Sensitization scenes twice a day between meetings with the Experimenter (E).

Thirty-six habitual smokers were randomly assigned to one of three training groups; one group of twelve …

A Comparison Of Communication Between Friends And Strangers Under Oral And Written Conditions, Raymond F. Venzke

Theses and Dissertations

The primary goal of the communication process is to have the addressee understand the communicator's expressed thoughts or ideas. Three factors which have Been shown to be important are: the relationship between the communicator and addressee (Ferguson, 19^9), the amount of feedback (Leavitt and Mueller, 1951)» and the communication channels used (Duncan, 1969).

The present study attempted to determine if friends communicate more effectively than strangers and if oral communication in a condition permitting nonverbal communication and feedback was more effective than written communication.

Five sets of ten pictures of males were given to each subject. One friend was designated …

The Treatment Of Anxiety In The Physically Disabled By Three Different Variations Of Systematic Desensitization, Robert H. O'Neill Aug 1974

The Treatment Of Anxiety In The Physically Disabled By Three Different Variations Of Systematic Desensitization, Robert H. O'Neill

Theses and Dissertations

Systematic desensitization has become a major technique for the direct removal of maladaptive anxiety. The basic method consists of pairing progressive muscle relaxation with the imagination of anxiety producing scenes. The scenes are arranged in a hierarchy with those scenes at the top eliciting little or no anxiety and those scenes at the bottom eliciting a great deal of anxiety. It has been hypothesized that the process of progressive muscle relaxation inhibits the development of anxiety in the presence of anxiety evoking stimuli and weakens the bond between those stimuli and the anxiety. Recently, several investigators have, suggested that any …

Biochemical Parameters Of Hereditary Chondrodysplasia In Mice, Trent D. Stephens Aug 1974

Biochemical Parameters Of Hereditary Chondrodysplasia In Mice, Trent D. Stephens

Theses and Dissertations

Cartilage from newborn mice homozygous for chondrodysplasia contains normal quantities of protein and chondroitin sulfate. Mutant fetal cartilage incorporates normal amounts of sulfate, glucose, and glucosamine. Overnight rinsing with water removes about 25% of the incorporated sulfur and existing uronic acid from mutant ribs and about 55% from mutant limbs. Control ribs and limbs are affected very little by such a rinse. The diffusability of chondroitin sulfate (represented by incorporated sulfur and uronic acid) may be due to a lack of covalent bond formation between chondroitin sulfate and collagen.
