Spatio-Temporal Pattern Recognition Using Hidden Markov Models, Kenneth H. Fielding Jun 1994

Spatio-Temporal Pattern Recognition Using Hidden Markov Models, Kenneth H. Fielding

Theses and Dissertations

A new spatio-temporal method for identifying 3D objects found in 2D image sequences is presented. The Hidden Markov Model technique is used as a spatio-temporal classification algorithm to identify 3D objects by the temporal changes in observed shape features. A new information theoretic argument is developed that proves identifying objects based on image sequences can lead to higher classification accuracies than single look methods. A new distance measure is proposed that analyzes the performance of Hidden Markov Models in a multi-class pattern recognition problem. A three class problem identifying moving light display objects provides experimental verification of the sequence processing …

Portrait Of Michael Corleone In The Godfather Trilogy, By Francis Ford Coppola, Jean Mccrowell May 1994

Portrait Of Michael Corleone In The Godfather Trilogy, By Francis Ford Coppola, Jean Mccrowell

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to show a correlation between the statements and actions of the character of Michael Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola's Godfather trilogy and the six phases of the romantic myth, as defined by Northrop Frye. During the evaluation the following premise was developed: Michael Corleone can be considered a hero despite his violent nature.

The procedure of this study was to examine the dialogue and behavior of the character of Michael Corleone in the Godfather trilogy. I have demonstrated that his speech and actions show he is what Frye calls a demonic, romantic hero who …

This investigation encompasses his first appearance in 1934's The Wise Little Hen to his later appearances in the late fifties and early sixties. Part of this study will focus on discovering just what forms of humor were used and to establish working definitions for exaggeration, understatement, black humor, and reversal and see how they function in the Donald Duck cartoon.

In addition, the character of Donald will be examined to see how he is used as a solitary …

Functional Aspects Of Mitochondria In Copper-Deficient Rats., Jeannine Marie Matz Mar 1994

Functional Aspects Of Mitochondria In Copper-Deficient Rats., Jeannine Marie Matz

Theses and Dissertations

Morphological observations indicate that dietary copper deficiency causes structural damage to cardiac mitochondria. Even though marked structural changes have been observed in copper deficiency, a correlation between abnormality of mitochondrial structure and function has not been apparent in previous studies. The objective of the present project was to examine various aspects of cellular and mitochondrial function in copper deficient rat hearts; especially, (1) changes in mitochondrial function defined as respiration and ATP production, (2) the susceptibility of the mitochondria from copper deficient rat hearts to uncouplers and inhibitors of oxidative phosphorylation and electron transport, and (3) alterations in the activity, …

The Effect Of Traditional Versus Multimedia Augmented Instruction On Exposure Time Determination., Kathy Ann Smart Mar 1994

The Effect Of Traditional Versus Multimedia Augmented Instruction On Exposure Time Determination., Kathy Ann Smart

Theses and Dissertations

In introductory black-and-white photography course work, variables in laboratory methods for determination of exposure data often lead to low quality projection prints. Correct laboratory procedures are essential for results of minimization of error in print density. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of traditional instruction, and traditional instruction augmented by a multimedia module for psychomotor learning and to determine if academic level and previous experience had an effect on accuracy of density determination for photographic print. The experimental design of this study was a repeated measures post-test only design. The repeated measures effect had three levels, density …

Friends In The Process Of Meaning-Making: A Study Of Vygotsky's Concept Of Internalization., Roberta Orthel Shreve

Theses and Dissertations

This study had as its purpose the exploration of meaning-making within the social context of friendship. It was guided by Lev Vygotsky's concept of internalization and Patricia Carini's perspective on the expressiveness of the individual. The questions directing the study were (a) how do friends influence the construction of personal and shared meaning, and (b) can evidence of the internalization of constructed meaning be observed through close examination of children's works? The mode of inquiry used to explore these questions was qualitative in nature, consisting of a case study of two preschool children identified as friends. Procedures used to collect data …

The Effective Use Of Animation In Simulation Model Validation, Christopher L. Swider Mar 1994

The Effective Use Of Animation In Simulation Model Validation, Christopher L. Swider

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined two animation displays moving icons, bar graphs at two presentation speeds to determine how each of these factors affected the animations ability to communicate violations of model assumptions. Subjects viewed animation displays individually and in combination at each presentation speed. Eight problem scenarios were presented to evaluate each animations ability to communicate violations of different assumptions. Each animations communication ability was measured subjectively and objectively. Subjective measures in the form of pairwise comparisons were used to calculate normalized preference ratings for each animation. objective measures included problem identification accuracy and problem time. Subjective results indicated that moving …

Effective Parallel Algorithm Animation, Paul W. Chase Mar 1994

Effective Parallel Algorithm Animation, Paul W. Chase

Theses and Dissertations

The AFIT Algorithm Animation Research Facility AAARF was developed by the Air Force Institute of Technology AFIT as a teaching aid for data structures and algorithm design. In particular, an extensive set of performance animations has been developed for the Intel iPSC Hypercube parallel processing system. This research focuses in part on developing animation support for discrete event simulation, mission routing, and evolutionary algorithms based on abstract representations of parallel algorithm behavior. The effort also builds extensions to the AAARF system and examines direction for further research. An innovative adaptable application-specific animation construction environment has been designed and implemented. The …

Advertising Budget Reduction Impacts On Effective Communication: A Descriptive Analysis : Evaluation Of Virginia State Parks 1994 Advertising Campaign, Lois Ann Delbueno Jan 1994

Advertising Budget Reduction Impacts On Effective Communication: A Descriptive Analysis : Evaluation Of Virginia State Parks 1994 Advertising Campaign, Lois Ann Delbueno

Theses and Dissertations

A descriptive analysis to determine the communication effects of a reduced advertising budget, this study evaluated the 1994 Virginia State Parks advertising campaign. The campaign's objective was to provide Virginians more information about the parks, which in the previous 1992 Virginia Outdoor Survey, was said to be needed.

The author sought to answer questions relative to the overall effect of reducing the advertising budget, as well as the amount and nature of awareness resulting from it.

In order to measure these relationships, the author collected data into two random seven-day periods to compare 1994 versus 1993 for awareness, cost-effectiveness and …

Modulation Of The Humoral Immune Response By The Sympathetic Nervous System, Tracey Lynn Spriggs Jan 1994

Modulation Of The Humoral Immune Response By The Sympathetic Nervous System, Tracey Lynn Spriggs

Theses and Dissertations

The immune system is critical for the maintenance of homeostasis. Due to the fact that a coordinated effort between organ systems is required for internal stability, it has been postulated that the immune system interacts with the neuroendocrine system. Clinical, anatomical, and receptor studies have provided evidence for a bi-directional communication between the nervous and immune systems. The goal of the present studies was to determine the potential influence of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) on the primary antibody forming cell (AFC) response.

The adrenergic neurotoxin, 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA), has been utilized extensively by researchers to explore the possible relationship between …
