In order for their work to be more effective, social workers must establish rapport quickly and develop a therapeutic relationship with their clients based on understanding their background. Clients often feel more comfortable with a worker from a similar background or ethnic idenity. This study explores identifying the motives of new students entering the profession.

The goal of this research was to provide information to social work professionals about the benefits of self-help mutual aid and psycho-educational support groups in the community, and to examine the Latino attitudes toward support groups. The research examines some Latino cultural values such as familism, social network, and spirituality. The various Spanish and Spanish/English speaking support groups that participated in this study were from San Bernardino, Los Angeles, and Riverside counties. The sample size in this research was 30 Latino individuals from four Spanish, or Spanish/English self-help mutual aid, and psycho-educational support groupsavailable in the Inland Empire.

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the role phonological awareness plays in the second language (L2) classroom among English as Second Language (ESL) learners. In order to better understand the reasons behind second language (L2) student's phonological improvements, phonological awareness was tested to see what affect, if any, it had on student's intelligible speech. Six English as Second Language (ESL) college students participated in the study in which they provided three audio recordings of their English speech over the course of ten weeks.

This thesis offers a critical comparison of how the fields of Composition Studies and Applied Linguistics and Teaching English as a Second Language inform the tutoring of second language writers in writing centers. It examines where the two fields diverge and intersect in order to identify what knowledge can be useful from each working with the other. This thesis examines the captivity narrative, Three Came Home, written in 1947 by Agnes Newton-Keith, and the poverty narrative, Without a Net: Middle Class and Homeless (with Kids) in America: My Story, written in 2005 by Michelle Kennedy. When examined together through the lens of Trauma Theory, these narratives provide evidence of how similar the survival skills and strategies are between the American female POW's and the American females experiencing downward mobility. This thesis will also show how language uncovers and decodes the presence of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder not often associated with women in poverty.

Satire has been credited with possessing the power to deconstruct the distinctions we make between opposing concepts and thus lead us to reevaluate established views. Structuralist Ferdinand de Saussure claimed that language relies on sets of opposites, or binary pairs, to create meaning. Building on this idea, deconstructionist Jacques Derrida explored the hierarchies he believed were inherent in all binary pairs, arguing that on concept in each pair occupies a superior position in our consciousness.

This study will focus on Hawaiian Creole English and standard American English (HCE/SAE) speakers who grew up in Hawai'i and relocated to the mainland as adults, and how their use of HCE and SAE varies across different social situations. In Hawai'i much of the population speaks Hawaiian Creole English and Standard American English, speakers often code-switch between the two varieties. Fluency in HCE and SAE differs among speakers, and this fact has implications for communication in a preferred language variety in particular social situations.

The goal of this project was to explore bilingual kindergartener's emergent views about writing and their concepts of the functions of writing in a school setting context. This study focuses on the importance of not underestimating literacy knowledge or the intellect of English language learners. In this descriptive study, six bilingual kindergarten students, instructed in their primary language, Spanish, were asked to respond to several guided questions while and after viewing four videotaped sequences.

This thesis explores the rhetorical effect ballads have had as a medium of argument for those who were "free of literary influences and fairly homogeneous in character." The ballad, speaks to us poetically and by tradition reveals human interests emerging from distress and frustration. Three men (John Lomax, Alan Lomax and Harry Smith) were instrumental in collecting and recording early ballads before they were lost; this effect has lingered from an early period in time to the 1960s, and beyond when the value of ballads was rediscovered.

This qualitative study is conducted to investigate how language learners are socialized into the target speech comunity, and also, whether they perceive the shift in personality when using the target language to interact with different social groups in different social contexts. A two-month case study was done to inspect the language socialization process of 10 out of 14 NNES (non-native English speaking) students enrolled in Level Three Composition Class in IEP (Intensive English Program) at CSUSB in 2006 Summary. The data for this current study was collected through audio taping, interviews, and the journals of the student participants.
