Affective Socialists : The Left-Wing Politics Of Chile And Bahrain In The Cold War, Samantha Clarice Carter
Affective Socialists : The Left-Wing Politics Of Chile And Bahrain In The Cold War, Samantha Clarice Carter
Theses
“Affective Socialists” explores the story of the Chilean and Bahraini Marxist left, their rise to political and cultural prominence, and their subsequent removal from power during the peak of their influence. This thesis covers the period between 1964 and 1975, during which both nations saw political upheaval and the eventual violent ousting of Marxists from power. Why, and how, did this happen? I argue that the two nations underwent a similar process of increased sectarian behaviors and outlooks within the ranks of their Marxist left. In exploring and explaining this process, I propose an expanded understanding of the term sectarianism …
Quantifying Bimetallic Interfaces Fabricated Using Directed Energy Deposition (Ded) Processes, Jordan Terrell
Quantifying Bimetallic Interfaces Fabricated Using Directed Energy Deposition (Ded) Processes, Jordan Terrell
Theses
To reduce costs associated with the fabrication of low volume, complex components in many industries, use of additive manufacturing (AM) processes are being explored. This approach greatly reduces the time and cost by eliminating multiple processing steps, such as brazing and welding, to fabricate the component in one process. While processes such as powder bed fusion (PBF) can print monolithic components, directed energy deposition (DED) methods are used to print components using a combination of materials. DED processes, using either a blown powder or wire feedstock, can interchange materials for deposition of bimetallic combinations. One application for DED processing is …
Security And Privacy Threat Of Scrubbed Nand Flash Memory And Countermeasure, Md Mehedi Hasan
Security And Privacy Threat Of Scrubbed Nand Flash Memory And Countermeasure, Md Mehedi Hasan
Theses
Due to the high bit density and low-cost, NAND flash memory has grown popularity of various consumer electronics over the past decade. NAND flash memory is used as the primary storage medium of smartphones, USB drives, SSD and laptops. To ensure the high bit density and low cost, there is a tradeoff with security and reliability. To expedite the performance of a NAND flash and to mitigate the early wear-out, erase is not performed frequently. As erase is a costly operation that reduces the lifetime of a flash memory cell, a page-level digital sanitization is used to erase data temporarily …

With the five configurations, data are given …
Root Failure Analysis In Meshed Tree Networks, Shashank Rudroju
Root Failure Analysis In Meshed Tree Networks, Shashank Rudroju
Theses
Mesh topologies play a vital role in switched networks. Broadcast storms due to the loops in Mesh Networks are a major concern in switched networks. Logical spanning trees are constructed using algorithms like spanning tree algorithm to avoid loops and hence address the broadcast storm problem. However, in the event of a topology change or a link failure in the network, it takes time to converge and construct new spanning tree to forward frames. Link State routing and other protocols like Rapid Spanning Tree protocol[2][19] were introduced to address the problems of high convergence times in the basic spanning tree …

The Implementation And Evaluation Of Self-Advocacy Programming For College Students, Emily Baker
The Implementation And Evaluation Of Self-Advocacy Programming For College Students, Emily Baker
Theses
The existence of barriers for college students living with disabilities is expansive and far-reaching; however, Field, Sarver, and Shaw (2003) and Walker and Test (2011) indicate that the development of self-advocacy skills increases the likelihood of overall academic success. It is vital that disability support services on college campuses recognize and develop programming to provide students with opportunities to increase their self-advocacy skills. This research assesses the effectiveness of self-advocacy workshops offered through an office of disability support services at a mid-sized regional university in the southeast. Causal agency theory and the ecological model of self-determination guided the development of …

The Use Of Mycobacteriophages As A Novel Therapeutic Option To Control And Treat Johne's Disease, Gillian Catherine Crowley
Theses
The incidences of Johne’s disease (JD) in farms worldwide have increased significantly over the last 80 years. The increase in JD is owing to the lack of diagnostic tests available and the long incubation period of the disease causing pathogen, Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis (MAP). In addition, treatment of JD with antibiotics has proven difficult due to the emergence of antibiotic resistance MAP strains and the presence of the thick lipid rich mycobacterial cell wall. An alternative diagnostic and treatment method for JD involves the use of mycobacteriophages. As part of this research, individual mycobacteriophages (TM4) and a mycobacteriophage cocktail (LE1 …

Detecting Periodic Action Patterns In Videos, Slesa Adhikari
Theses
Finding periodic segments in videos has a wide range of applications like recognizing and classifying actions in a video. In this thesis, we present a solution to the problem of identifying repetitive segments in a video and finding the number of periodic actions appearing in these repetitive segments in an unsupervised manner. The proposed method generates time-series data from the distance matrix of frames in a video. The time-series data is then analyzed to first determine the intervals where repetitions occur and then compute the number of periodic actions in these segments. Our method was evaluated using the MHAD202-v dataset. …

This thesis examines how ideologies such as feminism and patriarchy operate within language by providing a detailed analysis of five of Salman Rushdie’s novels, Midnight’s Children, Shame, The Satanic Verses, The Ground Beneath Her Feet and The Enchantress of Florence. It is concerned with the changes in Rushdie’s use of language and the effect of this on the way gender is constructed in the selected texts. His novels offer a critique of contemporary Western culture’s understanding of gender, identity, politics, philosophy and religion. Although Rushdean scholarship is often concerned with identity politics, this thesis expands the discussion by critically engaging …
Veteran Paramedics’ Experience Of Managing Work-Related Trauma: A Qualitative Study, Ryan D. Jenkins
Veteran Paramedics’ Experience Of Managing Work-Related Trauma: A Qualitative Study, Ryan D. Jenkins
Theses
Paramedics throughout the world are trained to competently treat the physical injuries of patients requiring pre-hospital emergency medical care. The nature of this work exposes them to highly traumatic and often life threatening situations. As a result of working with this stress and trauma, they themselves can experience emotional, psychological, and physical trauma (Gayton & Lovell, 2012). Research suggests that they receive little education and training about how to effectively manage this trauma (Gayton & Lovelle, 2012) and that many paramedics experience symptoms of Burnout, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), or Depression (Beaton, 2006; Millar, 2004; Shakespeare-Finch, 2006). The impact of …

Verifying Predictive Temperature Gradients For An As-Built Additively Manufactured Part, Jared Stone
Theses
Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a fabrication process that provides a cost effective alternative to conventional subtractive methods for small volume, complex parts. To accelerate development, numerical modeling methods are being evaluated to establish processing parameters thereby reducing the current trial and error methods. Resulting microstructure of an AM build is determined by the thermal profile it undergoes in-situ. This study uses a nominal approach to verify modeling predictions with metallurgical analysis of an as-built AM part. The finite difference additive thermal model (DATM) was used to construct temperature gradients from its generated temperature and time data simulated for a single …

Perspectives Of Year 12 Students From Five Catholic Secondary Schools In Western Australia Towards Teaching As A Career, Lucie M. Mccrory
Theses
The purpose of this research was to review the ways in which Year 12 Catholic school students perceive teaching as a career and to explore the people, contexts and factors that have influenced these perspectives. Schools are being increasingly challenged to revisit the role of the educator in today’s rapidly changing educational landscape. Best practice teaching and learning is at the forefront of this consideration. Attracting talented and committed students to the teaching profession is crucial if schools are going to play a part in adequately teaching and preparing future generations for society (Weldon, 2015). It follows therefore that both …
The Hope And History Debate In Fundamental Theology, David Patrick Collits
The Hope And History Debate In Fundamental Theology, David Patrick Collits
Theses
The hope and history debate in twentieth century Catholic theology concerned to what extent the object(s) of eschatological hope could be realised within history. Its context was the ‘secularisation of Christian eschatology’. On the one hand, Joseph Ratzinger, who was indebted to the philosophical work of Josef Pieper, considered hope’s object to belong to the realm of gift. He was sceptical of the extent to which hope could be manufactured by human means within history. On the other, Edward Schillebeeckx, Johann Baptist Metz and Gustavo Gutiérrez presented theologies of futurity, including political theology and liberation theology, in which the realisation …
