Introduction to vision and perception has been a fundamental topic for students from varied majors in college. Students who study Biology, Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, and Visual Design, need to learn about the visual pathway before they dive into more specific research topics. This thesis intends to create a 3D animation to assist professors explaining the complex process of the visual pathway. The target audience for this project is undergraduate students majoring in color science. My goal of this animation is to introduce students to the complicated anatomy of the retinal structure and the molecular pathway of the photoreceptors to demonstrate …
Towards Sustainable Cities: E-Waste Collecting Machine: A Conceptual Design, Marwah Al Ramsi, Alia Al Helali
Towards Sustainable Cities: E-Waste Collecting Machine: A Conceptual Design, Marwah Al Ramsi, Alia Al Helali
Theses
Continuous development, keeping up with technology and increasing the production of multi-feature electronic devices are all factors that have increased the use of electronic devices all over the world. The accumulation of E-devices by individuals increases the amount of electronic waste that causes environmental pollution problems. Therefore, an innovative solution must be found that encourages people to give up old or damaged electronic items for recycling and benefit from their contents. An electronic waste collecting scheme that grants reward points to contributors and link the waste to recycling companies is suggested as an appropriate solution to attract people's attention. The …
Modern Tarot Deck, Caitlyn Childress
Modern Tarot Deck, Caitlyn Childress
Theses
The Original Rider-Waite tarot deck has since been reimagined through numerous tarot decks with the intention of modernization and implementing personal interpretations. Through varying versions of the monumentally historical deck, the Major Arcana, a vital part of the traditional tarot deck, has transformed meaning through replacements and substitutions of visual design elements. Existing modern adaptations of the Original Rider-Waite deck have not addressed race and gender perspectives native to the original deck. I recreated the Major Arcana twice, with both groups of cards tailored towards the same user group with ease, learning, traditional meanings, and experience in mind. After creating …

Novel Molecular Approaches To Diagnostic And Epidemiological Analyses Of Cryptosporidiumspp.Implicated In Clinical Infection, Jennifer K. O'Leary
Theses
Cryptosporidium remains an underestimated, yet highly prevalent, parasitic agent of gastrointestinal illness worldwide. In clinical settings, diagnosis has previously relied on microscopic techniques. However, enteric parasite targeting molecular tools, such as real-time PCR panels, have superseded microscopy in recent years. This body of work examines the nature, implications and opportunities of this paradigm shift. This thesis is divided into seven chapters that consist of a literature review chapter, five experimental chapters focusing on the molecular diagnosis and epidemiological analysis of Cryptosporidium spp., and a final summary chapter. Chapter I provides the contextual narrative and supportive reasoning behind the research undertaken …

Optimising The Carcass Merit Of Irish Beef Cattle Using Genetic And Non-Genetic Information At The Animal And Herd Level, David Kenny
Theses
Failure of beef carcasses to achieve desirable carcass specifications represent inefficiencies within the supply chain, namely greater carcass processing costs and the inability of the resulting primal cuts to conform to high-value market specifications. Analysis of a representative sample of prime Irish beef cattle conducted in this thesis determined that 59% of cattle fail to achieve the desired carcass specifications of the supply chain at slaughter. The objective of this thesis was to use readily available information to define strategies that could help to reduce this statistic. Firstly, the likelihood of Irish beef carcasses achieving the desired carcass specifications was …

The Significance Of Land Use, Topography, Antecedent Rainfall, And Atmospheric Conditions In Relation To Summertime Convective Storm Initiation In The North Alabama Region, Christopher Tracy
The Significance Of Land Use, Topography, Antecedent Rainfall, And Atmospheric Conditions In Relation To Summertime Convective Storm Initiation In The North Alabama Region, Christopher Tracy
Theses
In the Southeast U.S., summer days with abundant “pop-up” thunderstorms are common and strong synoptic forcing is not needed to initiate them. The goal of this study is to explain and ultimately enhance predictability of summertime convective initiation in these tranquil environments. Spatial non-randomness arises, with greater event density appearing over high elevation by midday. Late in the day, event counts subside with another mechanism emerging (urban heat island). Antecedent rainfall, instability, and moisture are higher on average where convective initiation occurred. In terms of feature importance, elevation is more important in the early to mid-afternoon while antecedent rainfall and …
Genomic Changes Associated With Transitions To Heterospory And Genome Downsizing In Land Plants, Rijan R. Dhakal
Genomic Changes Associated With Transitions To Heterospory And Genome Downsizing In Land Plants, Rijan R. Dhakal
Theses
Green plants, ubiquitous and essential in the biosphere, have two reproductive life cycles: heterosporous and homosporous. Heterosporous plants are generally seen more often in daily life and tend to be the source of staple foods. Heterosporous reproduction has evolved at least 11 times from ancestral homosporous lineages. Heterospory, presumed to have selective advantages, has a perplexing correlation with chromosome numbers. Here I have used novel data, tools, and methodology to discover 19, so far unknown, gene families, with the potential to explain the correlation between the reproductive life cycle in green plants and chromosome numbers. The discovery of these gene …
A Case For Simple, Low-Cost Autotuning Heuristics For Efficient Performance Of Irregular Algorithms, Phillip Allen Lane
A Case For Simple, Low-Cost Autotuning Heuristics For Efficient Performance Of Irregular Algorithms, Phillip Allen Lane
Theses
Irregular algorithms (i.e., algorithms that make irregular memory accesses) are notorious for being difficult to optimize on parallel architectures due to load imbalance in the number of computational operations and memory access overheads. However, they are critically important as they include algorithms for sparse linear algebra and graph algorithms. Common optimizations include schedulers, orderings, and data structures that try to mitigate workload imbalance across computational units. Many current mitigations of this problem necessitate expert tuning by high-performance engineers. Methods for autotuning, which do not require an expert, are developing a trend towards large complex heuristics that are expensive in both …
Augmented Reality-Supported Spatially Aware Visual Links For Multiple Displays And Devices, Jordan Gilbreath
Augmented Reality-Supported Spatially Aware Visual Links For Multiple Displays And Devices, Jordan Gilbreath
Theses
Visual data analysis and sensemaking can benefit from utilizing multiple displays to organize large amounts of information. However, analyzing information scattered across multiple displays can be challenging. Existing solutions to solving this problem often require mental effort to understand cross-display relationships. A hybrid approach, named AR-SAViL, is presented which addresses this problem by using an augmented reality headset to track displays and their contents in real time, drawing visual links directly between related information. The performance of the system is evaluated through exploration of an existing dataset and expert review, and findings suggest AR-SAViL has potential to assist visual analysis …
Case Study Of The Extreme High-Shear/Low-Cape, Strongly-Forced Tennessee Valley Qlcs Of 12 February 2020, Adam Weiner
Case Study Of The Extreme High-Shear/Low-Cape, Strongly-Forced Tennessee Valley Qlcs Of 12 February 2020, Adam Weiner
Theses
High-shear, low-CAPE (HSLC) environments present unique operational forecasting challenges during the cool season across the southeastern US. Existing literature has sought to characterize the climatology of HSLC and Quasi-Linear Convective System (QLCS) environments as well as study bow echoes and mesovortices under moderate to large CAPE regimes. This case study investigates a cool season mid-Tennessee Valley severe weather event, where 200-300 J kg-1 of CAPE and 0-1 km shear of 25 m s-1 along with strong low-level forcing resulted in a severe weather event which was difficult to anticipate. Findings of this research suggest that bow echoes and …
Nonlinear Adaptive Sliding Mode Control With Application To Quadcopters, Ryan Mathewson
Nonlinear Adaptive Sliding Mode Control With Application To Quadcopters, Ryan Mathewson
Theses
Nonlinear Adaptive Sliding Mode Control (NASMC) has the capability to adequately control a system whose parameters are unknown to the controller designer. Conventional model-based controllers require a mathematical dynamic model of the system with known parameters. These are normally determined by extensive system identification experiments which are expensive and time consuming to perform. In this thesis, a NASMC approach is proposed that does not require known system parameters. Using NASMC, a controller designer can skip the system parameter identification and fast forward to the control implementation. In addition, once a NASMC controller is derived for a quadcopter, the same controller …
Beyond The Supernova : Time, Space, And Utopia In Outer Wilds, Sarah Salajka
Beyond The Supernova : Time, Space, And Utopia In Outer Wilds, Sarah Salajka
Theses
Video games have evolved from simplistic marks moving on a screen to a diverse and inventive storytelling medium unique from other narrative forms. They allow for new methods of approaching traditional literary forms, such as the utopia. The utopian genre has seen a series of formal changes as social and historical contexts changed over time. This thesis proposes a new approach to the utopian genre borne from the current inability to imagine a future. While previous literary versions of utopia were expressed by moving forward through time or displacement through space, current social and environmental circumstances render this impossible, and …

Thermal Model Of A Centrifugal Nuclear Thermal Propulsion System, Jacob T. Keese
Theses
A numerical model was developed to study the heat transfer within the reactor of a Centrifugal Nuclear Thermal Propulsion system wherein liquid uranium heats hydrogen gas via direct-contact heat transfer. This one-dimensional, steady-state model treats the liquid uranium annulus of the centrifugal reactor as a conducting solid with internal energy generation and includes models of convection on the outside of the reactor, nonuniform energy generation from a detailed neutronics calculation, and models of bubble velocity and heat transfer. Results for three annulus geometries were compared for a variety of run conditions with the goal of maximizing the propellant output temperature …

Observational Analysis Of Atlantic Basin Tropical Cyclone Squall Lines And Relationship To The Diurnal Cycle, Vivian Brasfield
Observational Analysis Of Atlantic Basin Tropical Cyclone Squall Lines And Relationship To The Diurnal Cycle, Vivian Brasfield
Theses
Previous studies on the tropical cyclone (TC) diurnal cycle have shown in observations and modeling the presence of outward propagating squall lines. These squall lines were observed in several TCs during recent Atlantic hurricane seasons. Three cases from previous years were chosen based on their impact to land and diurnal characteristics. This study seeks to characterize these squall lines and their environmental and thermodynamic characteristics, determine whether they behave more like midlatitude squall lines or tropical cyclone rain bands, and assess the performance of the convection-allowing High Resolution Rapid Refresh model in forecasting them over the ocean and over land. …
Jury Nullification : An Extralegal History, Kim Straub
Jury Nullification : An Extralegal History, Kim Straub
Theses
This paper examines the changing cultural understandings of jury nullification, with a particular focus on non-judicial explanations from 1700 to 1850; how colonial executives, American legislatures, and the public understood acts of nullification. Early eighteenth-century observers tended to classify acts of jury nullification as anecdotal events placed in a strict socio-moral framework. Revolution brought about a radical new vision of nullification. Beginning in the 1750s, nullification was understood in a new hyper-political way that emphasized jury agency and independence. By the 1820s, the public returned to a socio-moral understanding of nullification. Once again, acts of nullification were explained as a …
Investigation Of Behavioral And Cognitive Traits Affecting Dispersal Tendencies In Eastern Mostquitofish (Gambusia Holbrooki), Jennifer Dougherty
Investigation Of Behavioral And Cognitive Traits Affecting Dispersal Tendencies In Eastern Mostquitofish (Gambusia Holbrooki), Jennifer Dougherty
Theses
Dispersal plays an important role in ecological and evolutionary processes. Despite being important to population and invasion dynamics, more information is needed to understand what traits act as drivers of dispersal tendencies. Here, we examined how different behavioral, environmental, and cognitive traits predicted dispersal tendency in the Eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki). We examined how chronic exposure to an antidepressant affects different behaviors and dispersal in wild- caught G. holbrooki. We then tested additional behaviors and their relationship to dispersal tendency. We found that exposure to fluoxetine did not affect performance in any of the behavioral assays or on dispersal. In …
Population Genomics Of A Rare Plant : Tiehm's Buckwheat, Benjamin M. Cecil
Population Genomics Of A Rare Plant : Tiehm's Buckwheat, Benjamin M. Cecil
Theses
Eriogonum tiehmii is a rare plant found in Nevada with a range of approximately three hectares (Morefield, 2020). E. tiehmii is of particular interest due to lithium and boron in the soil. This area is one of only two known lithium-boron deposits globally (Fluor Enterprises 2020). This makes its habitat prime mining location. E. tiehmii is being considered for protection under the U.S. Endangered Species Act of 1973. The objectives of the study were to determine the closest relative of E. tiehmii by estimating genetic relationships between E. tiehmii and other taxa, and to describe the genetic structure among E. …
Experimental Investigation Of Swept Bio-Inspired Wing Planforms, Arnab Chatterjee
Experimental Investigation Of Swept Bio-Inspired Wing Planforms, Arnab Chatterjee
Theses
The aerodynamic efficiency of the Swift (Apus Apus) and its resultant wing morphology merit further study for applications towards micro aerial vehicles (MAVs). Three bio-inspired wing planforms form the focus of this study to investigate the impact of sweep and spanwise chord variation on their local flow physics. The suction side flow characteristics are investigated using 2D particle image velocimetry (at Re = 4.0 × 104 and 6.0 × 104) to identify the effects induced by the planform geometry, followed by direct force measurements (at Re = 6.0 × 104) to correlate the …
Assessing Flaw Detection Capability Of Laser Powder Bed Fusion In Situ Monitoring, Erin Lanigan
Assessing Flaw Detection Capability Of Laser Powder Bed Fusion In Situ Monitoring, Erin Lanigan
Theses
Monitoring systems developed for laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) metal additive manufacturing (AM) can be useful in qualifying parts. Aerospace applications often require nondestructive evaluation (NDE) as part of a damage tolerance approach. However, AM poses a challenge for NDE due to the typical part size and complexity. In situ monitoring can potentially take advantage of the layer-wise manufacturing process to inspect the part as it is built. This requires correlating indications in the monitoring data with the formation of flaws in the finished part. To develop this correlation, LPBF samples were made with seeded voids. Destructive serial sectioning metallography …
Exergy Analysis Of Photovoltaics Coupled With Electrochemical Energy Storage For Lunar Power Applications, Phillip Dyer
Exergy Analysis Of Photovoltaics Coupled With Electrochemical Energy Storage For Lunar Power Applications, Phillip Dyer
Theses
An exergy-based analysis of Lunar power generation and energy storage systems is conducted. Exergy is used as the metric for analysis because it includes both the first and second law of thermodynamics. Exergy destruction rates are calculated through quasi steady state energy and exergy balances, while exergy efficiencies throughout the Lunar diurnal cycle for systems and key subsystems are also quantified. A MATLAB code is used to generate models of system performance, the results of which are presented. The influence of parameters such as Lunar latitude, size, and power supply curve are discussed. Of the options presented, battery energy storage …
Characterization Of Trat Protein Encoded In Incf Resistance Plasmids, Katelyn Ashley Lott
Characterization Of Trat Protein Encoded In Incf Resistance Plasmids, Katelyn Ashley Lott
Theses
Drug-resistant infections pose serious medical threats, and causative resistance genes spread through plasmid conjugation. The TraT protein is a virulence factor encoded in drug-resistance F-plasmids. TraT itself provides protection from conjugation, serum complement, and bacteriophages, but the protective mechanism is unknown. To facilitate mechanism studies, I developed improved purification protocols for isolation of the soluble domain of F-plasmid TraT from Escherichia coli. Wild-type TraT and two variants were obtained. TraT domain forms several types of oligomers in vitro, also observed in full-length TraT. This oligomerization is stable without membrane attachment and in broad range of salt concentrations. Purified …
Adaptive Data Association Using Multiple Hypothesis Tracker For Space Object Tracking, Thibault Richard
Adaptive Data Association Using Multiple Hypothesis Tracker For Space Object Tracking, Thibault Richard
Theses
There are thousands of objects in space with only a few sensors. Also when multiple objects are observed by a sensor, there is often an ambiguity of which measurement belongs to which object. This research intends to find a solution to this data association problem by developing a joint data association and orbit determination approach to adaptively assist the data association problem in tracking all the objects as accurately as possible. The solution studied throughout this thesis is the Multiple Hypothesis Tracker, a structure that comprises all the observations combinations. Then, a gating system of initial orbit determination, orbit determination …

Theses
This thesis will be an investigative look at fashion designer Lilly Pulitzer. The significance of this project is based on the discovery of Lilly Pulitzer as one of the most successful women entrepreneurs in the fashion industry. Despite Lilly Pulitzer’s success, not much has been written about her. The few articles found written about her restated the same information. The writings about her talk of her privileged background and her social status but do not delve into who she was as a person or the social stigmas that she dealt with by being a businesswoman during the 1960’s. The purpose …
