Non-Adiabatic Perturbations And Non-Gaussianity During Inflation: Affine Gravity Approach, Isaac Bamwidhi
Non-Adiabatic Perturbations And Non-Gaussianity During Inflation: Affine Gravity Approach, Isaac Bamwidhi
Theses
This thesis is concerned with providing a complete study of non-Gaussianity and entropy perturbations that are sourced by multiple fields nonminimally coupled to gravity. The study will be performed in the framework of the two important formulations of gravity, namely: purely metric (general relativity) and purely affine formulation – where the metrical structure results from the dynamics of the spacetime affine connection. We shall employ a covariant formalism in our framework and demonstrate that it leads to a curved field space which can produce a conspicuous departure from the purely metric gravity. This work is expected, not only to derive …

Performance Assessment Of Existing Rc Bridges Equipped With Seismic Risk Mitigation Systems, Homam Mohamad Ghazal
Theses
Many bridges built before adopting current design standards may be at risk as they do not meet the latest seismic performance objectives. Bridges are vital infrastructure components required to be serviceable after earthquakes to avoid negative consequences on daily traffic. Previous seismic hazard studies considered the United Arab Emirates an earthquake-prone region subjected to two scenarios: (i) near-field events, and (ii) far-field earthquakes. Therefore, the vulnerability of pre-seismic code bridges in the UAE should be carefully assessed, and retrofit techniques should be proposed to mitigate possible earthquake losses. This study is thus devoted to assessing the seismic vulnerability of a …

An Ethnomethodological Examination Of The Decision-Making Process Psychiatric Nurses Use When Deciding Whether To Use Seclusion, Bonnie M. Harmer
Theses
This replication and expansion of Mason's work on seclusion used an ethnomethodological approach to examine the decision-making process of five Canadian registered nurses. Each nurse read two patient vignettes and then verbally explained whether they would use seclusion and why. The interview data were analyzed in structural, languaing, first-level and second-level analyses. Although all subjects arrived at different decisions, they structured and languaged their responses similarly. The first-level analysis indicated the subjects believed that experience was the most significant factor in their decision-making. However, second-level analysis implied that a desire to gain positive feedback also significantly influenced the subjects. Commonsense …

Efficacy Of Flapping-Wing Flight Via Dual Piezoelectric Actuation, Quinn Andrew O'Rourke
Theses
A novel piezoelectric-actuated wing system featuring dual actuators for increased wing control is presented and evaluated for its forward-flight characteristics via theoretical modeling and physical wind tunnel testing. Flapping wing aerial systems serve as a middle ground between the traditional fixed-wing and rotary systems. Flapping wing aerial systems exhibit high maneuverability and stability at low speeds (like rotary systems) while maintaining increased efficiency (like fixed-wing systems). Flapping wings also eliminate the necessity of dangerous fast-moving propellers and open the door to actuation mechanisms other than traditional motors. This research explores one of these alternatives: the piezoelectric bending actuator. Piezoelectric materials …

The Effect Of Marine Snow Particle Distribution On The Foraging Behavior Of Calanus Pacificus, Elena Beckhaus
The Effect Of Marine Snow Particle Distribution On The Foraging Behavior Of Calanus Pacificus, Elena Beckhaus
Theses
Marine snow is a major component of the biological pump, through which carbon is exported to the deep ocean. The sinking of marine snow can be disrupted by organisms, including many species of zooplankton that ingest or break up aggregates. These processes can have important impacts on planktonic food web dynamics and carbon export. Marine snow can have vertically patchy distributions, occurring in thin layers, which may further affect interactions with zooplankton. In this lab-based study, we examined how the presence of a marine snow layer affects copepod behavior and ingestion.
We conducted a series of experiments in which copepods …

Unsupervised Transfer Learning With Autoencoders, Siddhant Reddy
Unsupervised Transfer Learning With Autoencoders, Siddhant Reddy
Theses
There have been massive improvements in the field of computer vision in recent years, mostly due to the efficacy of deep learning. Most if not all of these tasks involve use of supervised learning. However, building a labelled dataset of sufficient volume can be prohibitively expensive. This is where transfer learning is applied, where the predictive models are trained on a related pretext task(most commonly using supervised learning) before being fine-tuned on the target task. This reduces the volume of data required for the target task but we are still bound by the volume of labelled data available for the …
