Recording of radio emission from the sun can adequately be accomplished using a magnetic tape system. Magnetic tape's advantages over other recording systems include higher information capacity, low cost, and ease of operation.

Modifications of the tape deck include the recording motor speed controlled by a SCR circuit, a suitable filtering device for the SCR, and an external fan for cooling the circuit and motor.

Careful consideration has been given to the frequency response and signal-to-noise ratio as it affects the accuracy of the recording.

An Audio Oscillator Triggering Circuit For The Eg&G 501 High Speed Stroboscope; With Integrated Digital Timing, Boisey Collins

A timing generator was designed and built for an EG&G 501 High Speed Stroboscope. The generator delivers a burst of one, two, four or eight pulses at a selected repetition rate from .5HZ to 20KHZ; upon initiation by a start signal. An Unijunction Transistor ( UJT ) oscillator provides the basic repetition rate and Integrated Circuit ( IC ) Digital Logic is used to count and gate the output pulses. The tone reproduction curve of small-scale images on KODALITH film developed with KODALITH Super Developer were obtained by microdensitometry using a sinusoidal target of 64 percent modulation as a sensitometric tablet to produce images at spatial frequencies corresponding to screen rulings of 9 to 375 lines/inch. A similar series of exposures was processed with addition of sulfite to the developer to give essentially noninfectious development. Speed and contrast with KODALITH developer increased with spatial frequency; speed increased continuously by a small factor and contrast passed through a maximum (80 percent greater than for large area image) at a spatial frequency …

The development characteristics of mercaptoacetic acid monobaths were compared with those of sodium thiosulfate monobaths at varying fixing-agent concentrations. The following differences were noted: (1) it required four times more moles-per-liter of sodium thiosulfate than metcaptoacetic acid to obtain the same rate of fixation; (2) the mercaptoacetic acid monobath produced less silver than the sodium thiosulfate; (3) KODAK Panatomic-X Film developed in a mercaptoacetic acid monobath had a covering power greater than or equal to that produced by development in the same phenidone-hydroquinone developer without any fixing agent, whereas the covering power of the sodium thiosulfate monobath was less; (4) …

In order to increase the organic solvent solubility of aryl-hydrazones, N-alkylation was attempted. The substrates acetaldehyde 2,46-trinitrophenylhydrazone (acetaldehyde TNP) and acetone 2,46-trinitrophenylhydrazone (acetone TNP) were prepared and characterized. Alkylation attempts were made with reagents and conditions the same as those successful in alkylating acetone 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone (acetone DNP). Attempts were made with differing alkylating reagents, equivalence ratios, times and temperatures. Alkylating procedes via the anion of the substrate. The anions of the substrate were prepared and characterized via uv and nmr. Altered structure of the anion relative to the hydrazone lead to its chemical stability and appeared to preclude its alkylation. …

Nitration of n-propylbenzene resulted in O-nitro-n-propylbenzene. Reduction of this compound gave o-n-Propylphenyl azide was prepared by diazotization of o-n-propylaniline followed by treatment with sodium azide.

Photolysis of o-n-propylphenyl azide in di-n-propyl-amine yielded two new azepines, 2-di-n-propylamino-3n-propyl-3H azepine and 2-di-n-propylamino-7-n-propy1-7H-azepine. Their structures were assigned on the basis of their physical properties (i.e. I.R., U.V., N.M.R., N.S. and elemental analysis).

Photolysis of the azide at room temperature gave 26.9% o-n-propylaniline and 4.3% 2-di-n-propylamino-3-n-propy1-3H azepine, but when the photolysis was carried out in the presence of the triplet photosensitizer (xanthen-9-one) the yield of o-n-propylaniline was increased to 34.6% and the yield of 2-di-n-propylamino-3n-propy1-3H-azepine …

The basic principles of stability analysis are set forth, including the development of a mathematical model, steady state analysis, integration of the dynamic system equations, and predictions of transient responses. The equations for the mathematical model are developed for a continuous stirred tank reactor with a cooling jacket, containing an autocatalytic reaction, in unsteady state operation. These equations are numerically integrated to obtain a good picture of reactor dynamics about the steady state. It is accurate to within a few mired values, though not enough testing was done to specify its limits. The objective of this research is to study the functional relationship between amplitude and phase images, using a sinusoidal test function. Amplitude and phase sine wave gratings were produced and scanned. It was found that the phase image closely reproduces the amplitude image for low spatial frequencies, but the accuracy of reproduction falls off at high spatial frequencies.

Four wind tunnels and a three-dimensional digital computer program developed the perfect gas aerodynamic characteristics, then correlated to single curves by the viscous parameter. A scanner based on the principle of the classic microdensitometer was assembled for the purpose of rapid granularity determination. A rotary stage was used to allow the generation of a root-mean-square (rms) voltage signal proportional to rms Transmittance in the sample. A mathematical relation was then developed to calculate granularity. The scanner was calibrated and was proved capable of 10 percent accuracy with 95 percent confidence.

The effect of flash durations of 5 milliseconds (msec.), 500 msec., and 5 seconds on a color naming technique was examined in a dark –field Maxwellian View optical system. Although the results showed variability among three subjects in most regions of the spectrum, all subjects were tested and showed to be part of the population for normal color perception. Graphical interpretation was made for the average of all subjects. There was little indication that color naming shifted, although there are indications of hue purity increases with flash duration. For the purposes of this experiment, a General Electric tungsten ribbon filament lamp, with an operating range of 12 to 18 amperes was used as the object. From published curves, it was found that the color temperature of the filament varied from 2220K to 2990K over the above amperage range. A method of synthesizing programmable counters is described. It is shown that if the values of the program inputs are not fixed by external requirements, they can be defined during the synthesis to tend to minimize the combinational logic of the programmable counter.
