Simulation Of An Open-Loop Stepping Motor System, Gregory Bell May 1985

Simulation Of An Open-Loop Stepping Motor System, Gregory Bell

Theses

This report presents a description and functional model of a hybrid stepping motor drive system. The motor drive methods of fullstepping and backstepping are presented as examples. Test methods for system characterization are described, and response characteristics for the simulated and experimental results are compared to verify the model. This paper shows that an open-loop stepping motor drive system can be accurately simulated to predict real hardware performance.

Synthesis And Characterization Of Poly(Amide-Sulfonamides): New Candidates For Reverse Osmosis Membranes., Thevarak Rochanapruk May 1985

Synthesis And Characterization Of Poly(Amide-Sulfonamides): New Candidates For Reverse Osmosis Membranes., Thevarak Rochanapruk

Theses

Commercially available aromatic diamines such as 4,4'-diamino diphenyl ether and 4,4'-diamino diphenyl methylene were treated with N-acetylsulf anilyl chloride to give the amino-sulf onamido-acetanilide derivatives. These derivatives were treated with 6 M hydrochloric acid to give the diamine monomers containing a preformed sulfonamide linkage. These monomers were polymerized with various diacid chlorides using a low temperature solution technique. Polymerizations using the Yamazaki reaction have also been investigated. The polymers obtained were characterized using infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry.

The Effects Of Common Solvents On Different Types Of Flexographic Printing Plates, Jack Jenkins May 1985

The Effects Of Common Solvents On Different Types Of Flexographic Printing Plates, Jack Jenkins

Theses

A dynamic development which has sparked flexography is the introduction and use of photopolymer plates. These plates have simplified flexographic printing by reducing the amount of time and effort needed to prepare plates for press and makeready. An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of commonly used solvent mixtures on flexographic plates. The plates tested include those using natural rubber, Buna N, and various photopolymers. The experiment specifically studied change in hardness of these plate materials due to immersion in different solvent mixtures over time. Noticeable differances in the degree of softening of plates was observed after 24 hours …

Determining Process Latitude With Electrically Measurable Test Structures, Jonathan Littlehale May 1985

Determining Process Latitude With Electrically Measurable Test Structures, Jonathan Littlehale

Theses

Collection of linewidth data is an important part of photoresist characterization. Linewidth data are usually collected by optical measurements or scanning electron microscopy. Both of these techniques are tedious and time-consuming. In this work, electrically measurable test structures are used to collect linewidth data. These structures use a measured sheet resistance, a known length of conducting material, and the measured resistance of the structure to determine the linewidth. The benefits of using these structures include completely automated data collection and the ability to collect statistically significant amounts of data. This allows the use of existing statistical analysis software to analyze …

Model Automatic Focusing System For Linewidth Measuring Instruments, John Ingraham May 1985

Model Automatic Focusing System For Linewidth Measuring Instruments, John Ingraham

Theses

This paper discusses research on an automatic focusing system for IC-linewidth measuring instruments. The instrument incorporates a collimated light source, a device to move a sample in small, precise increments, and a charge-coupled device. The autofocusing model would measure the step-height of a dielectric sample and correlate the height to a focus position. Thickness of samples on an enlarged scale were measured to verify the feasibility of this device.

Optimization Of An Elastic Drive Belt System Using An Algorithm Of Automated Optimal Design, Gerald T. Lioy May 1985

Optimization Of An Elastic Drive Belt System Using An Algorithm Of Automated Optimal Design, Gerald T. Lioy

Theses

In this design project an elastic drive belt system is optimized using an algorithm of automated optional design, AOD. First, some basic background information on AOD and elastic drive belt systems is reviewed. An elastic drive belt system configuration is defined, mathematically formulated, and optimized. The mathematical formulation, including a set of constraints, is completely derived. It is set up to be as general as possible so that it may be applied to a wide variety of different problems. In several places the formulation uses the recommendations of an elastic drive belt manufacturer for a good design. A sample design …

An Analysis Of Stroke Fluid Flow In A Converging Channel Using A Penalty Function Finite Element Formulation, Keith A. Honkala May 1985

An Analysis Of Stroke Fluid Flow In A Converging Channel Using A Penalty Function Finite Element Formulation, Keith A. Honkala

Theses

A penalty function finite element program is developed to study two dimensional creeping flow in a converging channel. The finite element solution is compared to the analytical solution of purely radial flow. The analysis reveals that the assumption of purely radial flow is valid for small apex angles, but is inappropriate for larger angles .

A Comparative Analysis Of Dna Molecular Crosslinking By Dichloro-N-Substituted Azaadamantane Isomers, Harry Robbins

Theses

A series of anti, anti-dichloro-N-substituted azaadamantanes have been synthesized (Henkel et al, 1981, J. Org. Chem. , 46, 3483) representing conformationally rigid nitrogen mustards incorporated into an adamantyl framework with well defined stereochemistry and fixed separation distances between alkylating centers of 3.6 A (1) and 2.5 X (2,3) (Henkel et al, 1981, J. Org. Chem., 46, 3483) to be used as structurally rigid probes of DNA alkylation and intermolecular crosslink formation leading to cytotoxicity. The aqueous solution stability and the extent of intermolecular DNA crosslink formation for both the N-methyl and N-piperdinoethyl series of isomers have been measured using novel …

Novel Array Representation Methods In Support Of A Microcomputer-Based Apl Interpreter, Daniel Fleysher May 1985

Novel Array Representation Methods In Support Of A Microcomputer-Based Apl Interpreter, Daniel Fleysher

Theses

Objective: To study novel ways of representing data arrays for potential application in a microcomputer-based APL interpreter. The goal is to find, for arrays containing mixed integers and real numbers, a way to improve both storage efficiency and thruput, over that obtainable using conventional APL interpreter array representations. Investigation: For the purposes of this study, three representative APL operators were chosen for implementation - dyadic addition, multiplication and selection. To establish a set of base cases from which to work, these three operators were implemented for two distinctly different data structures: Case-0: arrays containing only fixed length floating point data …

The Determination Of Metameric Mismatch Limits Of Industrial Colorant Sets, Michael Beering Apr 1985

The Determination Of Metameric Mismatch Limits Of Industrial Colorant Sets, Michael Beering

Theses

The metameric mismatch limits for two industrial colorant sets, a set for Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene polymers and a set for an acrylic enamel paint system, were determined for a reference illuminant, D65 and test illuminants of FS42, FN40, and Illuminant A. An overlap in color gamuts was found in all cases of similar test conditions between the two sets. Trends in the size, shape, and location of the gamuts were illustrated in 1976 CIE u'v' color space. The results show vastly dissimilar gamuts for all three of the test illuminants.

The Use Of Edge Gradient Analysis On Chrome And Emulsion Photomasks To Determine Modulation Transfer Functions, Marcy E. Levin Apr 1985

The Use Of Edge Gradient Analysis On Chrome And Emulsion Photomasks To Determine Modulation Transfer Functions, Marcy E. Levin

Theses

Using edge gradient analysis on chrome and emulsion photomasks to determine the modulation transfer function of a mask making system proved to be limited by the method in which the edge gradients were observed. Scanning electron micrographs were taken of the chrome and emulsion edges on various masks, and results showed that chrome photosmasks exhibit steeper gradients and better edge acuity than emulsion images. However, due to the ratio of line size to gradient size on each of the types of masks, it was decided that the gradient would not make a significant contribution to modulation loss in the image.

The Measurement Of Scatter And Absorption Using Three Spectrophotometric Techniques, Christopher Pearson Apr 1985

The Measurement Of Scatter And Absorption Using Three Spectrophotometric Techniques, Christopher Pearson

Theses

Three methods for scattering and absorption measurements were compared for correlation; Kubelka-Munk, 4pi and an in transmission compartment scattering measurement method. The results indicated highest correlation between the 4pi and Kubelka-Munk absorption measurements. The 4pi and Kubelka-Munk scattering measurements had the highest correlation for scattering, and almost no correlation was found between Kubelka-Munk and in transmission compartment scattering measurements.

The Effects Of Partial Coherence On The Imaging Of Lines On Photoresist, Robert Douglas Watso Apr 1985

The Effects Of Partial Coherence On The Imaging Of Lines On Photoresist, Robert Douglas Watso

Theses

A series of images of a AMI/RIT resolution mask was imaged at the following partial coherence values: 0.7, 0.65, 0.6, 0.55, 0.5, 0.45, 0.4, and 0.35. The line-width and slope of the 10 micron lines imaged at each particular partial coherence value was analyzed and evaluated. The slope of the developed photoresist sidewall improved significantly with a decrease in partial coherent illumination, except for the 0.7 to 0.65, range while the line-width decreased.

The Effect Of Cross-Coupling On The Temporal Response Of Ultrasonic Transducer Arrays, David Hadley Apr 1985

The Effect Of Cross-Coupling On The Temporal Response Of Ultrasonic Transducer Arrays, David Hadley

Theses

An investigation was performed examining a possible cause of acoustic cross-coupling in ultrasonic transducer arrays. It was postulated that pulse velocity was decreased due to the physical presence of other ultrasonic pulses in the medium. It was demonstrated that average pulse velocity is independent of the number of opposing waves traveling through an acoustic medium. A description of variable pulse velocity is discussed.

Spectrophotometric Color Formulation Based On Two-Constant Kubelka-Munk Theory, Eric Walowit Apr 1985

Spectrophotometric Color Formulation Based On Two-Constant Kubelka-Munk Theory, Eric Walowit

Theses

A new approach to computer color formulation based on non-linear least-squares techniques has been developed to characterize colorants and predict their behavior in mixtures. This approach allows the optimization of absorption and scattering calculations to characterize these colorants. This same method has been used to directly match the spectral reflectance of a standard with a mixture of colorants that yields nearly the same spectral reflectance as the standard being matched. Several advantages have been gained over more traditional methods: Kubelka-Munk K and S has been determined without primary binary blends, the spectral reflectance of the standard and proposed formulation exhibit …

A Method For Comparison Of Anti-Reflection Coatings For Photoresist Via A Simple Computer Algorithm, Neil Levine Apr 1985

A Method For Comparison Of Anti-Reflection Coatings For Photoresist Via A Simple Computer Algorithm, Neil Levine

Theses

A method was achieved to allow a quantitative and rapid comparison of different anti-reflection coatings (ARC) used under the photoresist layer in semiconductor-device fabrication. The computer algorithm utilizes the spectral irradiance of the source, reflectance of the substrate, absorption of the photoresist and ARC, and the spectral sensitivity of the photoresist to provide a quantitative value of the total system response to reflectance. The algorithm was tested by correlating the resultant value with photoresist resolution on aluminum, polysilicon, and 2nd-oxide process layers, and found to be linear with an R-squared value of 0.99S5 within the region investigated. Subsequent statistical analysis …

Simulation Of A Data Flow Computer, Carol Torsone Apr 1985

Simulation Of A Data Flow Computer, Carol Torsone

Theses

A data flow computer is a highly concurrent and asynchronous multiprocessor due to its fundamentally new architecture. It has no program counter and is not sequential. Instructions execute whenever their operands are available to them. Because of this data-activated instruction execution, multiple instructions can execute concurrently. The project for this thesis was the simulation of a data flow computer. A graph language and machine language were defined; then a simulator was written which reads and executes a machine language program in the asynchronous and concurrent manner of a data flow computer.

The study outlines the purpose of a project cost accounting system, emphasizing its role in budgeting, financial tracking, and managerial decision-making. It discusses how cost control mechanisms, including detailed expense reporting, job numbering, and …

The Effects Of Early School Entrance On Standardized Test Performance, Janet Prior Apr 1985

The Effects Of Early School Entrance On Standardized Test Performance, Janet Prior

Theses

This study was designed to investigate whether early school entrance affected the level of standardized test performance as a child progressed through school.

It was hypothesized that students' standardized test scores would correlate significantly with the age at which they entered school, that the standardized test scores of early-entrants would be significantly lower than middle-entrants and late-entrants, that standardized test scores of middle-entrants would be significantly lower than those of late-entrants, and that there would be a significant difference between the standardized test scores of girls and boys whose chronological ages were similar at the time they began attending school. …

The Determination Of Paper Spread Functions And Their Fourier Transforms From Kubelka-Munk Absorption And Scattering Measurements, Brian Pridham Apr 1985

The Determination Of Paper Spread Functions And Their Fourier Transforms From Kubelka-Munk Absorption And Scattering Measurements, Brian Pridham

Theses

In the study of imaging on paper, the effect of the penetration of light into the paper is usually neglected. Measurements show that light does not emerge from the paper sample at the same spot where it entered. The manner in which the light spreads through the paper is described by the spread function of the paper. It was suspected that an estimation of the paper spread function and its Fourier transform could be made based on the Kubelka-Munk absorption (K) and scattering (S) coefficients of the paper using a general diffusion model. The results show that an estimate of …
