Several hypotheses were examined in the study relative to (1) perceived computer impact on management levels, (2) perceived computer impact on the traditional functions of management, (3) perceived computer impact on levels and functions of management (interaction).

Support was provided for hypothesis of …

Effect Of Federal Income Tax Regulations On Small Business Decision Making, Leon V. Stanisz May 1985

Effect Of Federal Income Tax Regulations On Small Business Decision Making, Leon V. Stanisz

Theses

A comparison of small business organizations was performed in order to see how each is directly or indirectly effected by Federal income tax regulations. Each small business form was examined thoroughly in order to objectively assess organizational advantages and disadvantages and how they are effected by different tax requirements and regulations.

Business expenditures were analyzed to see how and where they could be utilized to the fullest. The thesis tried to examine as thoroughly as possible the cost and the value of these "fringe benefits" both to the company and to the individuals.

The results conclude that any type of …

Application Of The Self-Assessment Technique To Improve The Productivity Of The Project Engineering Function : A Case Study, Roman Stetkiewych May 1985

Application Of The Self-Assessment Technique To Improve The Productivity Of The Project Engineering Function : A Case Study, Roman Stetkiewych

Theses

While traditional industrial engineering methods can be successfully applied to improve productivity in the operations area, their effectiveness is limited where knowledge type work is being performed. For these types of activities, self-assessment has been proposed as a methodology to achieve increased efficiency. This thesis presents the results of applying this concept to the engineering function of a manufacturing firm.

Using a directed set of questionnaires as a focus, a self-assessment of itself was conducted by the Project Engineering Department to consider how well it thought itself to be performing and what its deficiencies were. Co-jointly the departments whose work …

16-Channel Signal Analyzer For Electroencephalograms, Junnyih Chiang May 1985

16-Channel Signal Analyzer For Electroencephalograms, Junnyih Chiang

Theses

An instrument has been designed to analyze 16 channels of EEG of a squirrel monkey by using several interface boards controlled by an Apple II computer. This instrumentation system is capable of performing these experiments in an automated manner. It stores the data generated on to a floppy disk, with software control and results may be printed out together with related graphs. Because of the limitation of the floppy disk capacity, we had only developed two versions:

(1) To average the EEG signal up to 8 times for all 16 channels, because a lot of memory is needed to save …

Computerized Instrumentation System For Indirect Measurement Of Metabolic Changes In Rats, Holger Tebbje

Theses

This work describes the further development of a system for the measurement of the energy expenditure of rats. Based on the concept of indirect calorimetry the respiratory exchange is monitored in a controlled experiment. Rats are held in cages through which air is drawn and analyzed. Transducers and sensors, interfaced to the computer, are measuring the composition and the physical parameters of the gas entering and leaving the chambers. The data recieved is processed, displayed on a screen, printed and stored for later analysis.

The accuracy and repeatability of the system improved by measuring additional parameters like barometric pressure and …

Free Convection Boundary Layer Heat Transfer Analysis Of Isothermal Horizontal Square Plates, Konstantinos E. Tsouras May 1985

Free Convection Boundary Layer Heat Transfer Analysis Of Isothermal Horizontal Square Plates, Konstantinos E. Tsouras

Theses

The theoretical study presented here examines free convective boundary layer flow and heat transfer over isothermal horizontal square plates.

The boundary layer equations subjected to the appropriate boundary conditions were solved by using Von Karman's approximate integral technique. The analysis was performed by considering an axisymmetric boundary layer because the analyzed phenomenon is three-dimensional in nature. Three-dimensional boundary layer analysis, however, is complicated and the work involved is rather tedious. Consequently, the axisymmetric boundary layer offers a useful alternative. Unfortunately, it was found that this type of analysis is applicable to the case of an upward-facing heated plate only; for …

The Quantitative Analysis Of Airborne Particulates By X-Ray Flourescence, George C. Asteriou May 1985

The Quantitative Analysis Of Airborne Particulates By X-Ray Flourescence, George C. Asteriou

Theses

Airborne particulate matter from the New Jersey State area collected on Quartz Microfiber filters was analyzed by X-Ray Fluorescence spectroscopy. The quantitative analysis of the samples against N. B. S. standards produced results which were compared with Atomic Absorption analysis

The results from the two methods were correlated by the introduction of empirical factors for each element.

However, a larger number of analyzed standards of varied composition, along with the creation of a spectral library, can minimize the need for empirical factors and yield accu¬rate results.

Transport Phenomena Of Copper Ions Through An Electromembrane, Ren-Fu Cheng May 1985

Transport Phenomena Of Copper Ions Through An Electromembrane, Ren-Fu Cheng

Theses

A separation process based on a new class of membrane ( the electromembrane ) was studied. Experiments were performed using three types of electromembrane to remove copper ions from aqueous solution. A Separation Cell Unit was designed and set up to investigate the transport of copper ions through the electromembranes under the influence of both an electric field and a concentration gradient. Fluxes achieved were much greater than those reported for other membrane processes, and the energy consumption was one half that of electrolytic deposition.

Scheduling Effects Of 5-(3,3-Dimethyl-1-Triazeno)Imidazole-4-Carboxamide (Dtic) And 1,3-Bis-Chloroethyl-1-Nitrosourea (Bcnu) On Mouse Melanoma Cells B16cl5, Gracie V. Coffey

Theses

DTIC and BCNU have been demonstrated to have enhanced chemotherapeutic effects in mice bearing Bl6 mouse melanoma cells. The order of administration seems to be important in maintaining optimum effects. This was shown is a study by Hill et al. (unpublished).

In the present study, mouse melanoma cells, Bl6CL4, were treated with either DTIC or BCNU. The drug was allowed to remain on the cells for 2, 3, or 4 days. The drug-containing media were then removed, the cells were washed and fresh medium was added. The cells were incubated in an atmosphere of 5% CO2 and 95% air at …

Reaction Of Atomic Hydrogen With Chloroform In A Discharge Flow Reactor, Wan-Kuen Jo May 1985

Reaction Of Atomic Hydrogen With Chloroform In A Discharge Flow Reactor, Wan-Kuen Jo

Theses

The reactions of atomic hydrogen with chloroform were studied in a tubular flow reactor both in a 4 cm i.d. and 2.6 i.d. discharge flow reactor at pressure of 2.22 to 2.82 mmHg and room temperature using GC and GC/MS for analysis of the reaction. The hydrogen atom concentration at the reaction flame was measured by Chemiluminescence titration with nitrogen dioxide. The hydrogen concentrations are in the 2.48 x 10+14 to 4.83 x 10+14 atoms/cc range at six different hydrogen flow rates. Evidence was found for the formation of atomic carbon intermediate in the reaction, but methane was …

Preparation And Properties Of Novel Dental Adhesives Based Upon Pentaerythritol, Yuan-Yuan Su May 1985

Preparation And Properties Of Novel Dental Adhesives Based Upon Pentaerythritol, Yuan-Yuan Su

Theses

Urethane methacrylates were synthesized from Pentaerythritol, TDI, HEMA and four phenolic blocking agents or from hydroxypropyl methacrylatel TDI and two phenolic blocking agents. All the products were characterized by melting pointy infrared spectroscopy, NMR spectra, and elemental analysis. The bonding of these materials to dentin slices was also investigated. Such materials are supposed to not only react with the organic constituent of dentin but also polymerized with restorative resin. It was found that bond strength was enhanced by the use of the urethane methacrylates, resulting in best mean bonding strengths of 2400 psi.

The Effects On Hue Resulting From Black Overprinting In Halftone Reproductions, Brian Philippsen May 1985

The Effects On Hue Resulting From Black Overprinting In Halftone Reproductions, Brian Philippsen

Theses

A type of black printer that only existed in theory is now being applied in the printing industry. The process which makes use of this black printer is known as gray-component replacement. Developed from the extension of the undercolor removal process, the use of gray-component replacement in printing halftone reproductions is said to result in numerous technical and cost benefits. When used to the maximum, the process eliminates one of the three process color inks in a given unit area and prints black ink from highlight to shadow. A problem can result from the use of this process as it …

An Examination Of Modulation In Shipley S1400 Positive Photoresist As Resist Thickness Varies, Mary Kay Swan May 1985

An Examination Of Modulation In Shipley S1400 Positive Photoresist As Resist Thickness Varies, Mary Kay Swan

Theses

A method of determining photoresist image modulation was investigated and utilized, in determining the effect of varied resist thicknesses on modulation for both a high and low contrast system. Modulation is defined in terms of maximum and minimum energy required to clear a line/space pattern in the resist image. In This study, useing the resist as the threshold detector, chemical contrast is compared to physical contrast in terms of modulation. Shipley's MF314 and MF312 are the two different contrast development systems used. This study has shown that beyond 11700 Å of resist thickness, physical modulation is reduced to a measure …

A Study Of The Effect Of Ink Viscosity On Dot Gain In Offset Lithography, David Dailey May 1985

A Study Of The Effect Of Ink Viscosity On Dot Gain In Offset Lithography, David Dailey

Theses

Dot gain is the enlargement which takes place in a dot from the time the dot is captured or generated on the film until it is printed. Dot gain can cause many problems, including color variation and loss of contrast, and if uncontrolled is one of the main contributors to waste in offset lithography. Of the many factors influencing dot gain, inks have been found to be a major contributor. One property recommended for further investigation is ink viscosity, which is the resistance to flow of an ink. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of ink …

A Performance Comparison Of Oversewn, Pva Double Fanned, And Cleat-Laced Bindings, Caroline Frazer Watson May 1985

A Performance Comparison Of Oversewn, Pva Double Fanned, And Cleat-Laced Bindings, Caroline Frazer Watson

Theses

Librarians and library binders are no longer always able to specify the traditional, superior oversewing method for binding library books. This problem emerged due to economic pressures within several related industries resulting in a proliferation of economic, but often inferior, binding technologies. As libraries are only approximately ten to fifteen percent of total publishers' sales, books cannot specifically be made for the library market. In addition, many of the new binding technologies yield books with insufficient inner margin space to prebind or rebind books utilizing the oversewing binding method. And finally, librarians, also faced with tight budgets, must find economic …
