Assessment Of Classical Database Models For Representing Solids, Julia L. Deal
Theses
Solid modeling is being explored as a method of representing three dimensional parts for mechanical design and manufacturing. This work analyzes the data storage requirements of the Boundary Representation and Constructive Solid Geometry methods of representing solid models. The ability of the database models (Hierarchical, Network, and Relational) to support solid modeling needs is evaluated. The goal is to determine the database model(s) best suited to store and manage the graphical data for solid model representat ions . Background information about mechanical engineering, graphics, and database models is presented. Entity-Relationship diagrams are used to define data requ irements .
A Tool For Compiler Testing, Chung-Cho Oliver Cheng
A Tool For Compiler Testing, Chung-Cho Oliver Cheng
Theses
A tool for compiler testing is implemented. The tool is driven by a BNF grammar extended by a device called control flags to incorporate those parts of a language that are not controlled by context-free rules (for instance, use of declared names). The tool produced two sets of program strings such that each production in the grammar is used at least once. One set is produced by Purdom's algorithm. The other is produced by a new algorithm designed by the author which builds a tree and then produces a set of strings from it for compiler testing. The program strings …
A Comparative Study Of Four Major Knowledge Representation Techniques Used In Expert Systems With An Implementation In Prolog, Joann T. Hudgick
A Comparative Study Of Four Major Knowledge Representation Techniques Used In Expert Systems With An Implementation In Prolog, Joann T. Hudgick
Theses
Knowledge representation is a central issue in Artifical Intelligence (AI) research. In order to solve the diverse and complex problems encountered, one needs both a large amount of knowledge and some mechanism for the management and skillful utilization of that knowledge. The basic problem in knowledge representation is the development of an adequate formalism to represent that knowledge. In this thesis I will discuss four of the major techniques for representing knowledge in expert systems: first order logic, production rules, semantic networks, and frames. Using Prolog as the implementation language, I will demonstrate that all of the above mentioned representation …
Fric: An Expert System To Recognize Fricatives, Karen A. Atkinson
Fric: An Expert System To Recognize Fricatives, Karen A. Atkinson
Theses
In building a speaker independent continuous speech understanding sys tem, a method is needed to translate the speech signal to a phoneme string. Current recognition attempts based on statistical methods are not as accurate as desired and require vast numbers of templates for comparison. On the other hand, human experts can transcribe phoneme strings from spectrograms with a high degree of accuracy, without needing to match unidentified seg ments against identified templates. This paper discusses the development of Fric, an expert system for identifying fricative phonemes, intended to func tion as part of a phoneme identification knowledge source. Fric attempts …
A Comparison Of The Collinear Mean And The Mean Sea Surface As Reference Levels For Altimeter Analysis In The Southern Pacific Ocean, Charles Beard
A Comparison Of The Collinear Mean And The Mean Sea Surface As Reference Levels For Altimeter Analysis In The Southern Pacific Ocean, Charles Beard
Theses
Satellites are used to study various oceanic phenomena, including sea surface temperature, color, and sea height variability (which is related to oceanic currents). In observing sea height variability from radar altimeters, three methods of analysis can be applied. They are the collinear or repeat track method, the cross-over difference method, and the mean sea surface method. All three are designed to remove the effects of geoid undulations from the altimeter records. This paper compares the collinear method with the mean sea surface method in a small geographic area. Both methods analyze the tracks of collinear altimeter data by subtracting a …
Indirect Photometric Chromatography Of Iodide Ion In Aqueous Solutions, M. Liz Allyn
Indirect Photometric Chromatography Of Iodide Ion In Aqueous Solutions, M. Liz Allyn
Theses
Indirect photometric chromatography was applied to the detection and quantification of iodide ion in aqueous solutions. A Nucleosil SB column containing the trimethylamine functional group was utilized in this HPLC study to compare the selectivity and reproducibility of copper (II) nitrate, trimesic acid, and phthalic acid eluents. Trimesic acid eluent was the strongest eluent, R.(I~)=3.5min, followed by phthalic acid, R.(I~")=14.6min, and copper nitrate, R. (I~)=15.5min, assuming optimum conditions. Both aromatic eluents were held onto the column by adsorption reactions with the styrene-divinylbenzene matrix of the resin. Irreversible column damage was the result. Coupled with the fact that the copper nitrate …
The Design And Implementation Of A System For Processing Documents Described In Generalized Markup Languages, Frank Cost
The Design And Implementation Of A System For Processing Documents Described In Generalized Markup Languages, Frank Cost
Theses
This thesis proposes an architecture for a system capable of transforming the work of an author into printed form, and builds a partial implementation based upon that architecture. It allows an author to describe a document as a hierarchical structure and remain unconcerned about how his work will ultimately appear in printed form. The author is provided with a special markup language which can be used to tag the various logical parts of a document. The author must also be aware of how the various tagged parts fit together. The system is able to read the author's manuscript as input, …
Animator: An Object-Oriented Approach, Stephen Kurtz
Animator: An Object-Oriented Approach, Stephen Kurtz
Theses
Object-oriented programming is presented as a paradigm for developing interactive systems for computer animation. Object types, evolved conceptually from graphics turtles, are implemented to provide the animator with familiar metaphors for the specification of motion in three-dimensional space. The intention is to create objects that can represent actors, cameras, and decor that the user can direct and animate in a relatively intuitive manner. Vector and turtle objects support the actors, which respond to messages to orient, accelerate and draw themselves on the screen. The MacApp object libraries are used to implement the standard Macintosh user interface and a unit is …
High Temperature Reactions Of 1,2-Dichloroethane With Water Vapor In A Tubular Reactor, Charles E. Anderson
High Temperature Reactions Of 1,2-Dichloroethane With Water Vapor In A Tubular Reactor, Charles E. Anderson
Theses
This study examines the reaction of l,2-dichloroethane with water vapor. The linear-flow method is utilized, assuming plug flow without axial diffusion. Normal operation is at atmospheric pressure and the reactor is a quartz tube in a thermal region 45 cm in length. Two reactor diameters of 0.4 cm and l.05 cm are used. Water and l,2-dichloroethane enter the system in liquid phase via syringe pumps. After vaporizing in heated tubing, they are combined with argon, the reactor carrier gas. The molar ratio of water to l,2-dichloroethane is 55:l and varied residence times are achieved by changing the argon flowrate. Reactor …
A Study Of The Application Of Paper Spread Function Data To The Prediction Of Physical Dot Areas For Offset Lithography, Paul Lewis
Theses
This investigation was aimed at establishing a relationship between the optical spread function of four common printing stocks (cast coat, enamel gloss, enamel dull and ledger) and a Yule - Neilsen n value in predicting physical dot Area, for offset lithographic printing. Using an offset press each paper stock was printed with a test target containing common screen frequencies at percent dot areas from 5-90"/. and solid ink patches adjacent to each tint. Using planimetry and macrodensitometry, exact n values were calculated for comparison with the measured spread function of that same paper stock. No relationship between the optical spread …

An Exploration Of Triarylmethane Leucohydroxides, Mahin Sadrai
Theses
To explore the possibilities of the potential use of photochromism of triarylmethane leucohydroxides and leucobisulfites , five leucohydroxides (see Table [5]) and five leucobisulfites were synthesized and two leucohydroxides and one leucobisulfite were investigated in a variety of solvents with different Brownstein Coefficients. Malachite green leucohydroxide and crystal violet leucohydroxide showed opposite behavior in the same basic solutions, while both of them were dramati cally affected by the change in solutions basicity. Photodegradation induced by repeated exposure (fatigue) manifested itself in the form of lower photo -induced optical density, with a constant halflife in malachite green leucohydroxide and in the …

Image Motion Compensation For An Electronic Imaging System, James H. Cain
Theses
The design of an image compensation device is given which is capable of minimizing the in-track image disturbances caused by velocity variations in an optical scanning device. Guidelines for the development of this mechanism are based on known optical principles. Acceptable response capabilities for this device are based on subjective and quantitative image quality standards. A first order analysis of the device was conducted to specify the performance required to minimize the distortions mentioned above. The final system specifications take into account actual hardware that is currently available for the typical scanner system presented.
A Detailed Measure Of Apparent Modulation Induced By Cornsweet Edges On A Digital Image Display System, Jeff Pelz
Theses
A digital image display based system was designed and implemented to perform visual measurements of apparent modulation induced by the Cornsweet illusion. The system was used to examine the results reported on previous experiments designed to measure the modulation transfer function of the human visual system. The reported results of experiments performed by Dooley and Greenfield on induced modulation were examined, and data not reported in that work was collected on the range of modulations over which observers perceived linear images. The system developed has the flexibility to be adapted for many different types of experiments. Visual experiments involving human …

Trends In Metal (Pb, Zn, Ni, As And Se) Concentrations In The New Jersey Air Environment, Geoffrey Ike Ejiofor
Theses
The trend and atmospheric concentrations of five trace elements (Pb, Zn, Ni, As and Se) were studied at Newark (urban site) and Ringwood (rural site), New Jersey, during January - September 1985, whilst the Hackensack Meadowlands, New Jersey were monitored during October 1985-March 1986. The analytical procedure involved collection of the airborne particulates on a glass fiber filter using a non-dichotomous high volume sampler. The samples were digested and analyzed using the atomic absorption spectrophotometer. It was ascertained that Newark and Meadowlands exhibited higher average concentrations of Zinc and Lead than Ringwood. It was concluded all the metals originated mostly …
Jmsl - A Language Derived From Apl, John Mark Smeenk
Jmsl - A Language Derived From Apl, John Mark Smeenk
Theses
A new AFL-derived language called JMSL is presented which rnodifies seven aspects of APL so that many current and potential APL users could benefit from a language which is easier to learn, read, write, and maintain. JMSL uses ASCII tokens instead of APL symbols to remedy interfacing, extensibility, and readability problems with APL. JMSL revises and extends APL built-in capabilities to provide greater expression and improved symbol-meaning correspondence. JMSL includes a new notation for nested arrays (a powerful data structure which combines the array processing of APL with the tree processing of LISP). JMSL provides hierarchical directories (similar to PASCAL …

The Biochemical Fuel Cell : Conversion Of Waste To Energy, Charles August Mielke
Theses
A batch biochemical-fuel cell was constructed and studies on the production of bioelectric energy using an alga Scenesdesmus quadricauda, and a bacterium Desulfovibrio desulfuricans, were conducted. Results were compared for a steady state cell using various concentrations of media components and showed that a 1000-fold increase in the concentration of media components produced a net potential output of 0.03mv/ml compared to an initial output of 0.02mv/ml. Further studies showed the biochemical net potential output using activated sludge from a waste treatment facility was 0.01mv/ml compared to 0.02mv/ml for the cell using the initial media concentration.
The system exhibited steady state …
Experimental Study Of Rectangular Reinforced Concrete Members Under Combined Biaxial Bending And Tension, Naresh B. Patel
Experimental Study Of Rectangular Reinforced Concrete Members Under Combined Biaxial Bending And Tension, Naresh B. Patel
Theses
In practice it is a very common case to have a column subjected to combined effects of axial tension and biaxial bending moments and very few efforts are done to get good design approach for such special members.
So for this purpose, experiments were carried out on rectangular shapecolumns. Rectangular shaped columns were casted in homogeneous with brackets - one on each end and at connections haunches were provided to avoid the possible end failure. The overall shape of this configuration was "H" shape. Two hydraulic jacks were used; one on either side of the columns and thus column section …

Biorhythms And Industrial Injuries, James Vincent Detitta
Theses
The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not a relationship exists between the time of an industrial injury and a specific position on the biorhythm scale known as a critical day.
Ninety-six employees who worked at the E. I. du Pont de Nemours Plant in Parlin, New Jersey served as a test group during 1980. In order to determine if a relationship did exist, the subjects' biorhythmic cycles for 1980 were charted and then their injury performance was monitored during that year to see if the injury date corresponded with a critical day. An additional test was …
A New Density-Dependent Mixing Rule For Equations Of State, Theodore John Shatynski
A New Density-Dependent Mixing Rule For Equations Of State, Theodore John Shatynski
Theses
A general procedure for the development of density-dependent mixing rules is demonstrated. This method is used to obtain a density-dependent local-composition mixing rule based on an extention of the work of Knox et al (1984). The resulting expression is tested with the Soave-Redlich-Kwong equation of state. Results for normal and cryogenic vapor-liquid systems for both one-parameter and three-parameter versions of the mixing rule are compared with results using the classical mixing rules.

Gas-Phase Reaction Of 1,2-Dichloroethane With Hydrogen In A Tubular Flow Reactor, Wei-Lian Lee
Theses
We have studied the reaction of 1,2-dichloroethane with H2 in three tubular flow reactors of different diameters at atmospheric pressure in the temperature range of 550° C to 1000°C. The kinetic parameters and product distribution were experimentally determined for each size reactor. The wall and bulk reaction rate constants were decoupled via analysis of three different surface to volume reaction data.
The experimental reactor was an isothermal tubular flow reactor that operated within the domain of plug flow region. The reaction was found to follow first-order kinetics with respect to 1,2-dichloroethane when in the presence of excess hydrogen. The …

Thermal Decomposition Of Chlorobenzene In An Atmosphere Of Hydrogen, Edward Robert Ritter
Theses
The thermal decomposition of chlozobenzene was investigated in a tubular flow reactor at 1 atmosphere total pressure and average residence times of 0.02 - 2.5 seconds. The temperature range from 800 - 1010°C was studied in both a reductive atmosphere of hydrogen and an inert atmosphere of heIium. Complete destruction of chlorobenzene occurs at about 1000°C for an average residence time of 1 second in hydrogen gas. In the inert gas, the complete destruction of the reagent was not observed in the range of conditions which were studied. The major products observed for pyrolysis in hydrogen were benzene, HCl, and …
