Artificial Intelligence And Mechanical Engineering, Efthimios Papayianis Dec 1988

Artificial Intelligence And Mechanical Engineering, Efthimios Papayianis

Theses

Many artificial intelligence programs have been developed to assist engineers in their search for solutions. Most of them are designed to assist with a specific type of problem and they usually take the form of an expert system. However one may also use the concepts of artificial intelligence to solve a problem for which an expert system is not yet available.

Three expert systems were developed with Prolog to demonstrate how artificial intelligence can help solve problems in mechanical engineering. The first expert assists in the design of simply supported beams. The second expert assists in the design of thick …

An Application Of Bit Level Systolic Arrays On Digitized Adaptive Array Processes, Shin-Hwa Tsai

Theses

This thesis has concentrated on some aspects of adaptive arrays, i.e., the data type as well as the calculating processes under an optimized version. An adaption of a modified bit-level array is described on the control structure for processes like correlation matrix, Q-R decomposition and solution of triangular linear systems. In short, an implementation of SMI(Sample Matrix Inversion) under a parallel systolic array process is consider5ed. Also an application of utilizing systolic array on a matrix inversion is derived. As a result, it could be predicted that a VLSI chip implementation for small adaptive arrays is feasible in the near …

Co-Metabolism Of Pentachlorophenol With Glucose Using Two-Stage Anaerobic Activated Carbon Fluidized Beds, Zen Wang Dec 1988

Co-Metabolism Of Pentachlorophenol With Glucose Using Two-Stage Anaerobic Activated Carbon Fluidized Beds, Zen Wang

Theses

Abstract - Detoxification of pentachlorophenol by using a two-stage anaerobic biological activated carbon fluidized bed has been investigated. Glucose was introduced as a cosubstrate to determine the relationship between the glucose/PCP ratio and the extent of PCP detoxification in such a system. This system has been proved to be effective in the removal of both PCP and COD. Ratio of glucose to PCP predominates the performance of the system throughout the whole course of this experiment. At a glucose/PCP ratio of 0.33, the system has a highest reduction of both PCP and COD. Addition of glucose to the highly PCP …

Decontamination Of Contaminated Clay Soils By Thermal Treatment, Chandrakanthi Weerasinghe Dec 1988

Decontamination Of Contaminated Clay Soils By Thermal Treatment, Chandrakanthi Weerasinghe

Theses

An experimental investigation on the desorption of contaminated clay soils by thermal treatment was performed. This study was carried out on two clay soils (kaolinite and bentonite) sorbed with three liquid organic compounds (phenol, chlorophenol, and chlorobenzene). The study consists of two different phases, the adsorption and desorption. The results on batch equilibrium adsorption were correlated with different isotherm models of which the Freundlich isotherm model was found to be best fit in predicting adsorption capacities of kaolinite, and that for bentonite was found to be the linear isotherm model.

A thermal desorption study followed the equilibrium adsorption study. A …

Anaerobic Biodegradation Of Trichloroethylene By Activated Carbon Fluidized-Bed, Jiunn-Horng Chern

Theses

The synthetic wastewater containing trichloroethylene (TCE) was anaerobically degraded with glucose using activated carbon fluidized-bed.

The range of TCE concentration from 26 ppb to 10.8 ppm was examined. The ratio of glucose to TCE in the influent wastewater was ranged from 26 to 805, while the TCE loading ranged from 0.025 to 1.510 mg/hr-L.

The TCE removal efficiency under these treatment conditions was found to be of 99.4%. However, the reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD) decreased when the TCE loadings was over 0.38 mg/hr-L.

Modeling Of Elastic-Viscoplastic Bahavior And Its Finite Element Implementation, Ted Diehl Dec 1988

Modeling Of Elastic-Viscoplastic Bahavior And Its Finite Element Implementation, Ted Diehl

Theses

A state variable approach is developed to simulate the isothermal quasi-static mechanical behavior of elastic- viscoplastic materials subject to small deformations. Modeling of monotonic/cyclic loading, strain-rate effect, work hardening, creep, and stress relaxation are investigated. Development of the constitutive equations is based upon Hooke's law, the separation of the total strain into elastic and plastic quantities, and the separation of work hardening into isotropic and kinematic quantities. The formulation consists of three coupled differential equations; a power law measuring viscoplastic strain-rate and two first order equations for isotropic and kinematic hardening. Derivation of, behavior of, and use of the model …

Economics Of Library Binding, Marcia I. Canibe Nov 1988

Economics Of Library Binding, Marcia I. Canibe

Theses

Since book acquisition funds have become more scarce, libraries are unable to pay higher prices for hard cover books that often circulate the same number of times as less expensive paper back books. Therefore, to increase the number of circulations libraries must send books to be either prebound or rebound. A national survey by the American Library Association (ALA) shows that the average trade book might last only 20 to 25 circulations, but books prebound or rebound according to the LBI standard will last at least 100 circulations. The librarian will have to choose whether to replace deteriorated trade books …

Spine Preparation: Factors Affecting Optimum Linkage Of Paper And Adhesive In Adhesive Bookbinding, Richard Adams Nov 1988

Spine Preparation: Factors Affecting Optimum Linkage Of Paper And Adhesive In Adhesive Bookbinding, Richard Adams

Theses

Adhesive bookbinding, a method of holding trimmed pages together in a book using hotmelt glue, offers rapid binding and curing time, but has the disadvantage of poor glue penetration into the paper edges. A weak binding will result unless good linkage can be made between paper and glue, which is the objective of spine-roughening treatments. Eight spine-roughening treatments from three manufacturers were compared on an uncoated and a coated paper stock, against a control treatment of trimmed paper. Treatments were studied by light- and scanning electron microscopic examination of paper edges and by measurement of the mean page-pull values based …

Building And Testing A Gravure Paper Conformity Tester, Cort Holland Oct 1988

Building And Testing A Gravure Paper Conformity Tester, Cort Holland

Theses

The gravure industry does not have an inexpensive tester which can accurately predict the behavior of paper on a gravure press. The most acceptable tester currently available is the Parker Print Surf. A "conformity" tester, based on compression of paper into a thin channel, was designed and built. It was compared to the Parker Print Surf and found to be poorer in predicting ability except in the special case of groundwood papers. More study is necessary. Several unusual techniques were used. The first involved running sheets of paper through a web press. This technique had a slight "leading" sample distortion …

Theses

It is known that the gravure process provides the best quality printed materials and the fastest production speed. The gravure process, as a matter of fact, is the only process which can utilize fully digital imaging technology. For instance, the Helio-Klischograph Model K201 and K202 incorporated with the Hell Chromacom System can engrave gravure cylinders directly without using any halftone films or bromides. Hell Co., Ltd., moreover, has been developing the electron beam engraving technique which employs digital imaging technology to engrave gravure cylinders. On the other hand, Crosfield Electronics Co., Ltd. introduced the Lasergravure process which also utilizes digital …

A Comparison Of Staggered Position One Angle Process Color Printing With Four Angle And One Angle Process Color Printing, Blair Richards Jr Oct 1988

A Comparison Of Staggered Position One Angle Process Color Printing With Four Angle And One Angle Process Color Printing, Blair Richards Jr

Theses

The Staggered Position One Angle method of preparing color separations does not adjust the dot angle for each color. The dot pattern is staggered horizontally or vertically by half a row of dots for each separation maintaining the same angle. The investigation compared the Staggered Position method to the four angle method and to the dot-on-dot method. Newsprint was the substrate, and 65, 85, and 100 lines per inch were the rulings. Experienced judges viewed the representative prints and scored each for sharpness, color variability, and overall acceptance. They were also asked to indicate the evidence of rosette and moire …

A Study Of The Effect Of Surround And Ambient Lighting Conditions On Crt Screen Colors, Diane Ouellette

Theses

The use of CRT monitors as a soft copy proof in color electronic pre-press systems (CEPS) has become common. This has raised some question as to the appropriate viewing conditions for such terminals. This writing discusses the effects of ambient illumination as well as screen surround conditions on optical, psychophysical, and physical characteristics of CRT colors in a complex color field. A review of related literature, specifically those studies of chromatic adaptation, and effects of surround conditions on brightness, hue, and saturation is included. These studies are compared to the experimental data and both an ambient light model and surround …

Evaluation Of The Instrumentation Laboratory Microcentrifugal Analyzer Iii, Karin B. Mccall

Theses

The Instrumentation Laboratory's MicroCentrifugal Analyzer (MCA) was evaluated for precision, linearity and accuracy for albumin, alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST) , alkaline phosphatase, creatine kinase (CK), cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) total protein, cholesterol, glucose, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) , phosphorous, total protein, and triglyceride. Within-run, within-day, day-to-day, and total precision was comparable to or exceeded manufacturer's claims and was comparable to the precision in existing in-house tests. A comparison of methods for the MicroCentrifugal Analyzer with those used on the Technicon SMA 12/60, the Abbott ABA-100 and the Kodak Ektachem 400 showed very good correlation with minimal random …

A Study On The Relationship Of The Moisture Content Of Paper And The Setoff Rate Of Drying Oil Lithographic Ink And Its Application To Thermographic Printing, Daniel Gibbons Sep 1988

A Study On The Relationship Of The Moisture Content Of Paper And The Setoff Rate Of Drying Oil Lithographic Ink And Its Application To Thermographic Printing, Daniel Gibbons

Theses

The focus of this study was to determine the specific moisture content of several different papers that were exposed to four different relative humidity environments at approximately 30 degrees centigrade. This was done in order to see if the amount of water present in a sheet of paper affects the drying rate of drying oil inks. This in turn was done so that we would be able to determine if the rate at which this ink dries and its corresponding increase in viscosity affected the tack or "stickiness" which is vital to thermographic printing applications. The addition of moisture to …

Waveform Analysis And Application To A Model Of The Egg Waveform, Eu-Rune Chang Sep 1988

Waveform Analysis And Application To A Model Of The Egg Waveform, Eu-Rune Chang

Theses

The purpose of thesis is to describe and investigate a model of electroglottogram waveform. At the beginning, we generate a set of sine waveform models to analyze by using Fourier transform theory. Then, according to the electroglottogram is conjectured to be related to the area contact between the vocal folds, we assume a simple model of vocal fold vibratory motion is used to estimate the vocal fold contact area as function of time. Therefore, we modified and developed the mathematic EGG waveform model by using personal computer program computation to become a set of realistic EGG waveform models, which are …
