The findings show that there is a high correlation of support directed to four year B.S. programs in public and private colleges.

A Comparison Of High-End Color System Halftones And Postscript-Generated Halftones, Mary Lee Schneider

Theses

The purpose of this study was to compare the quality of PostScriptgenerated four-color halftones to halftones produced by traditional high-end color systems. The quality issue is one that must be addressed before a decision can be made to move magazine production onto a complete desktop publishing platform. In moving layout and design functions onto a desktop publishing platform, publishers can take advantage of PostScript as a page-description language to electronically create complete pages. Electronic assembly would eliminate the mechanical stripping step, allowing great reductions in prepress manufacturing costs. There are two routes that can be taken to output these electronic …

Ms. Pacrat: A Feeling, Thinking Machine, Lorraine D'Ortona

Theses

Since before the time of the first digital computers, the workings of the mind have been compared to that of a machine. With the onset of the discipline of Artificial Intelligence a truly organized attempt has been made to build intelligent machines that model the mind. Many interesting programs have been built, but the legitimacy of their success is a matter of great controversy. None of the AI programs developed so far have come close to the true power and intelligence of the brain. Expert systems, for example, are the most success ful commercial AI programs, and even they have …

The Guilt/Shame Quality: Its Many Forms And Functions For Graphoanalytic Interpretation, Shirley Norfleet

Theses

There was a two-fold purpose for this study: first, to investigate the view held by many graphoanalysts that guilt can be assessed by the identification of the stroke of "self-castigation". The second purpose was to investigate the relationship between the emotions of guilt and shame, and to further suggest to graphoanalysts the various traits to look for when evaluating the presence or absence of guilt and/or shame operating in the personality.

Thirty subjects were administered a guilt measurement test and a standard text model which was duplicated in their handwriting for comparisons and correlation with the stroke of "self-castigation". The …

Problems In Assessing And Treating Childhood Emotional Disorders: A Modest Proposal, Bettu Ann Parnell Jan 1991

Problems In Assessing And Treating Childhood Emotional Disorders: A Modest Proposal, Bettu Ann Parnell

Theses

This study is concerned with the difficulty of assessing and treating childhood emotional disorders. One may ask, "Why is it so difficult when there is a plethora of trained professionals to treat and assess these children and their families?" The author hypothesizes that, typically, these families see many professionals in their search for help, but the path becomes cluttered with different diagnoses, labels and a lack of congruence in making all the pieces of the puzzle fit for the child and family. Often, a family needs not only psychological help, but medical and educational assistance through the mental health system …

A Relationship Between Birth-Order Position And The Incidence Of Eating Disorders, Mary Weber Jan 1991

A Relationship Between Birth-Order Position And The Incidence Of Eating Disorders, Mary Weber

Theses

Eating disorders, bulimia, anorexia, and compulsive eating are a rising concern for the female population as they currently affect women in almost epidemic proportions. Research has enabled us to categorize like-characteristics among those clients who are affected as well as, to develop with some consistency, portraits of the family systems in which these patients develop their symptoms.

A key factor in the family structure is the role that each sibling assumes, which is often directly influenced by the ordinal position of their birth in relationship to their siblings. Research has also identified a categorical profile of characteristics associated with each …

A Comparison Of Leadership Skills Of Managers Of High Performing Fast Food Units Vs. Managers Of Low Performing Fast Food Units, Jack W. Goodner

Theses

This Culminating Project will examine the difference in supervisory styles used by managers in high performing fast food units and those in low performing fast food units.

While management in its present form has existed only a brief time, countless attempts have been made to explain why some achieve good results and others poor results.

This study attempts to differentiate by demonstrating that managers of high performing units employ more appropriate supervisory styles than do those in low performing units.

In order to prove this assumption, responses were collected from ten fast food managers employed by Foodrnaker, Inc. (Jack-inthe- Box). …

The Impact Of Organizational Shape On The Intrinsic Job Satisfaction Of White-Collar Workers, Bernie L. Alexander Jan 1991

The Impact Of Organizational Shape On The Intrinsic Job Satisfaction Of White-Collar Workers, Bernie L. Alexander

Theses

This thesis focuses on the study of job satisfaction and the impact of organizational shape on the intrinsic job satisfaction of white-collar workers.

Research has attributed the decline in white-collar job satisfaction to such things as over-complex organizational structures, broad spans-of-control and job specialization.

The purpose of the present study is to investigate the possibility that, within a corporate setting, there is a difference between the intrinsic job satisfaction of white- collar workers who are employed by flat, decentralized organizations and those who work for tall, centralized organizations. Specifically, it is hypothesized that white- collar workers of flat, decentralized organizations …

The Abstract Of The Lindenwood College Volunteer Survey, Glenda Dawn Raef Schaefer Jan 1991

The Abstract Of The Lindenwood College Volunteer Survey, Glenda Dawn Raef Schaefer

Theses

Lindenwood College needed more volunteers to help in the alumni and development departments. When this project began in 1988, alumni volunteers helped with the phonathon, mailings, networking for fund raising, and scholarship fund raising, as well as planning the annual Alumni Reunion. There were many more tasks than volunteers. Those who were faithful to their duties often "burned out" in a short time. As an active alumna, I felt the need for more help. We knew there were alumni willing to help, but we did not know who they were. When the development staff person who was to have developed …

The Effects Of Spousal Career Status On The Decision To Offer Promotion, Gregory B. Holder Jan 1991

The Effects Of Spousal Career Status On The Decision To Offer Promotion, Gregory B. Holder

Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between the career status of a female employee's spouse and her promotability. Previous research has suggested managerial bias against dual-career marriages based on assumptions regarding geographic mobility and commitment to career (Rosen, Jerdee, and Prestwich, 1975; LeLouam and Decotiis, 1983). Expanding on this premise, 60 managers from a large, regional corporation were enlisted. Each manager was given a brief series of personnel decisions to rate on a four-point scale ranging from 1 (certain denial) to 4 (certain approval). One of these decisions concerned whether or not to offer a …

The Valuation Of Minority Interests In A Closely Held Corporation, Richard Houlihan Jan 1991

The Valuation Of Minority Interests In A Closely Held Corporation, Richard Houlihan

Theses

According to the 1990 Statistical Abstract of the United States, approximately 17 million businesses exist in the U.S. They are comprised of over 3.4 million corporations, 1.7 million partnerships, and more than 12 million sole proprietorships. Furthermore, the United Shareholders Association reports that there are approximately 47 million minority shareholders in approximately 10,000 U.S. public companies. It is logical to infer from this data that millions of minority shareholders also exist in closely held companies - that is, non-publicly traded companies.

A minority interest is an interest which has no meaningful control over the day-to-day operations of a business, as …

The Family Dance Model: A Definition And Comparison With The Beavers, Olson, And Mcmaster Models Of Family Functioning, Lyle V. Turnage

Theses

This study explored the hypothesis that married couples have ways of relating to each other which are peculiar to their relationship; and that other couples operate under the same or similar patterns of relating.

"Patterns in family relationships are often referred to as dances." (Lerner, 1990). Dances are determined by the music played, the manner of dress or costume, physical movements, and the tempo or beat (Chujoy & Manchester, 1967). Family dances are also recognized by physical interactions or movements, appearance or dress, and the beat of family messages. The family dance model will use names of dances such as …

An Analysis Of The Consumer's Perception Of Pricing At Save-A-Lot Food Stores, Walter S. Jones Jan 1991

An Analysis Of The Consumer's Perception Of Pricing At Save-A-Lot Food Stores, Walter S. Jones

Theses

This study focused on Save-A- Lot retail grocery stores and why consumers shop at these types of stores.

Save- A- Lot stores are limited- assortment retail grocery stores. In todays fast-paced society, with many two-income households, consumers are always on the go. Many shoppers are looking for one- stop shopping capabilities, service departments, and stores that are open late hours. If this is the case, then it would be logical to believe that consumers would not shop at Save-A-Lot stores. Save-A-Lot stores offer very little service, shorter hours than conventional stores, and they claim to only offer the consumer 90% …
